Also, I have not seen my feral calico kitty – Angelina for 4 nights – I

To Kelley re. floors

2006-11-22 Thread wendy
Hey Kelley,

My husband and I tiled our house ourselves this past
spring and summer. We did almost the whole house,
except for the master bedroom, master closet-pretty
small, and one of the other bedrooms. Our whole house
is a little over 1500 square feet, so it was quite a
job, but we did it, and it looks great. I would say
it cost under $4000, but we picked out porcelain tile
and what we liked. It could have been done for about
$2000-$3000 had we gone cheaper on the tile. Also, I
went to a friend's house last month that had the
stained concrete like Phaewryn was talking about, and
it looked absolutely fantastic. They stained it a
brownish color, and the concrete had been etched
(scored) to look like large tiles, 2x2 or bigger, and
then covered with a really shiny shellac. It looked
GREAT, and I bet it was not expensive. The only thing
about concrete is that it's porous, so the shellac had
to also needs to be a sealer.

:)

Re: Sick cat, ideas?

2006-11-22 Thread Jennifer Phaewryn O'Gwynn
I'd HIGHLY suspect herpes-virus. Herpes can cause all of the same symptoms
as an URI can, plus it's MORE apt to cause eyes to seal shut and to cause
cornea damage. It IS treatable though, I have a regimen suggested a year or
so ago from this list:
One treatment for Feline Herpes recommended to me via email:
One treatment is Interferon and L-Lysine(which is an immune system booster
to help his own body fight it off). Interferon is available from a vet, but
L-Lysine is over the counter (you can find it at a health food store). A
treatment for the active infection would be Acyclovir (Zovirax) which is an
oral anti-viral and an antibiotic (either Doxycycline, Azithromycin or
Rifampin). Those used in conjunction with Vit A supplementation and Viroptic
eye drops (or Idoxuride/Betadine eye drops or Chloramphenical eye drops
since Viroptic is expensive) really work great to clear up the active
infection. Once cleared, the patient should remain on the Vit A, Interferon
and L-Lysine to prevent future recurrences. They should also be kept
stress-free. Of course, you should always get the permission form the vet
before doing any of this. Similar diseases (that cause similar symptoms) are
Bartonella, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma (all of which can occur along with
Herpes).
L-Lysine 500mg twice a day
Interferon 10 units orally once a day for 7 days, stop for 7 days, then give
10 units orally once daily for 7 days (and so one)
Doxycycline 5 mg per pound twice daily for 6 weeks
Azithromycin 5 mg per pound once daily for 21 days
Rifampin 5 mg per pound once a day for 21 days
For Vit A supplement you can use Felivite 2 with Taurine (it contains Vit A
as well as a few others to help with immune boosting)
Eye Drops are usually dosed three times a day (use caution to use NOTHING
containing a steroid as steroids will actually aggravate the eye and make it
worse)
All of these dosages came from The Journal of the American Animal Hospital
Association Jan/Feb 2004, pg 6-12

This treatment has proven VERY successful at treating my Greek sponsor cat,
he's vastly improved now!

That applies to ALL cats, not just FELV+ ones. CATS in general (and dogs
too, for that matter), can carry things immuno-compromised humans may be
more apt to catch, like worms, protozoan infections, toxoplasmosis, and just
germs in general. The FELV has no effect on that matter. Yes, cornell has
some very outdated and useless info. The lady seems set on dumping her

Hi all,

I have a foster cat named Ciara.

I pulled her from the local shelter in late March of this year with
her 5 kittens.

One kitten died, apparently of URI. Several kittens had severe eye
infections to the point their eyes were sealed shut. They were
cleaned twice a day with saline and treated with terramycin
ointment. One kitten has a scarred cornea. The surviving kittens
were all undersized and underweight. One became very ill with
diarrhea. She was taken to the vet and a fecal was run on her,
negative for both parasites and bacteria, and put on Albon, but was
dead within hours. The now 3 surviving kittens are about half the
size of normal kittens, but have been spayed/neutered and after
numerous vet trips have been proclaimed healthy. They have had
their distemper shots and one felv shot.

Mom has not been doing well and still is not. She had stomatitis
and had 8 teeth removed. She was then diagnosed with IBD (not by my
regular vet). I was treating her with a month's course of
Flagyl. I had a kitten with watery diarrhea and took her in and she
was diagnosed with giardia, so all cats are being treated for
giardia. She was also treated for giardia and the diarrhea seems
somewhat better. She has hair loss and her head is crusty (like
ringworm) but her back and tail are missing big chunks of hair like
mange. The vet did a skin scraping and says it is neither ringworm
nor mange. Since the diarrhea has improved the hair on her back is
growing back in but it is in very poor shape. (All my other cats
have beautiful fur - they are all on Felidae). She had cysts on
both ovaries when she was spayed. Now she has contracted URI,
apparently out of thin air.

I talked to my vet about this and asked if she should be retested
for FELV/FIV. He said yes, so we are going to retest her, but that
there are other virii that have the same effects that can't be
tested for? Does anyone know anything about this? She's been
mixing with my other foster cats for months. I've been slowly
vaccinating them (the rescue I am fostering them for does nto
require FELV vaccine, but I do) but have one with a heart condition
that can't be vaccinated.

Money is getting to be an issue here, as I am just running out. I
can't get the rescue to reimburse me for medical. I don't know what
to do. Does anyone have any ideas about any of this..stuff to try,
etc. She's a sweet cat, but I am sure she doesn't liek being constantly ill.

Can people become infected with FeLV?
Epidemiological and laboratory studies have failed to provide evidence
that FeLV can be transmitted from infected cats to humans. Regardless,
FeLV-infected cats may carry other diseases. At greatest risk of
infection are elderly or immunosuppressed people (e.g., those with AIDS,
or receiving immunosuppressive medications such as chemotherapy),
infants, and unborn children. It is recommended that pregnant women,
people with suppressed immune systems, the very young, and the very old
avoid contact with FeLV-infected cats.

Felv is not transferrable to humans so there is no need to be concerned.
In fact, on an email list I belong to -- there are a couple of people
who were transplant patients with Felv positive kitties and had no
problems.

I would suggest visiting www.felineleukemia.org so you (and your friend)
can educate yourselves on this virus. There is an email discussion group
on that website as well, which you can sign up for and ask questions.

  Susan,
What your saying is reasonable, this scare tactic is not, anyone
immuno-compromised should take precautions, but to say they shouldn't
even consider it is ridiculous:

I am so sorry. You are going through such hell right now. If this is
FIP then know you are living with despair and waiting for the next
disaster.

I hope the New Mexico rescue's vet is working with UC Davis or Dr.
Addie. If this is some new strain of corona then we really need
research. Typically older cats are pretty safe from FIP.

2006-11-22 Thread Susan Hoffman
Having adopted a kitten to a man who was HIV+ I know there are additional
considerations here. We had to have the kitten tested for toxoplasmosis and a
few other things that are not normally of concern. (The adopter paid for the
additional testing and the kitten was negative on all counts.) This was a
committed adopter. Had the kitten tested positive for anything of concern, the
kitten would have stayed with me for treatment and then been retested.

anymore – I knew she was not ill – I mentioned to her about my neighbour
poisoning cats and she thought, she may be one of the victims – I can’t tell
you how angry and devasting I am – she is a such a beautiful kitty, and was
getting so used to me and meoed so loud and happy to see me – I have so much
sadness, despair and angers these days. I am having a hard time to believe in

RE: Can FelV Positive Cats Affect health of Transplant Patient?

2006-11-22 Thread Frullani, Anita
I sent the email to the lady and she wrote back below:

http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/felv.html

Can people become infected with FeLV?
Epidemiological and laboratory studies have failed to provide evidence
that FeLV can be transmitted from infected cats to humans. Regardless,
FeLV-infected cats may carry other diseases. At greatest risk of
infection are elderly or immunosuppressed people (e.g., those with AIDS,
or receiving immunosuppressive medications such as chemotherapy),
infants, and unborn children. It is recommended that pregnant women,
people with suppressed immune systems, the very young, and the very old
avoid contact with FeLV-infected cats.

>>> "Stray Cat Alliance" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 11/22/2006

Best wishes,
Anita

2006-11-22 Thread Rosenfeldt, Diane
Hideyo, I am so sorry about Rikki. Gentle Bridge vibes to him, and I
know he knows how much he was loved. I hope that Jojo's problems are
treatable, and that Angelina turns up alive and well. If she was a
victim of this sick poisoner, may she rest in peace and may he rot in
Hell.

Rest up, and stay strong for your other kitties.

Hi, I just wanted to ask you to take a moment to send a prayer for my
most gentle kitty, Rikki who crossed the bridge to heaven tonight - he
had the most peaceful crossing -though I was in the same are as he was
resting (on the couch), I regret that I was not right besides him and
was not holding him as I ma sure he would have liked - I was so
exhausted and laying on the floor and felt sleep and woke up and he had
passed already - I feel badly that I was not holding him.. Though he was
so weak towards the end, every time, I could go and call his name, he
would meow for me like he has done for the past several years I have had
- I couldn't wish for a much more perfect than rikki -

I don't know for sure if he had FIP for sure,, as it impacted a
different part of the organ in his case (kidney) - though I know it was
not CRF, as his kidneys were just fine two weeks ago. I was talking to
someone today in rescue business - and there seems to be more FIP cases
in our area for some reason - so Susan, in a sense you were right, there
is something going on that no one knows about - there is more incidents
for FIP in the area at least than every in the past.. and don't know
why..Right now I am in despair and tired..

I have 4 other kitties who are showing a partial of symptoms in other
kitties who have passed away, and very paranoid. and I put all of them
on FOI interferon hoping that I am catching everyone early enough that
can reverse anything going one.. I am praying that I have seen the last
of FIP tragedy at my household..

I also found out that one of my dogs JoJo who is 8 years old mix of chow
and shepherd may or may not have cancer - his one of eyes is bleeding a
bit and has a big tumor in his gum.. and has blood in his urine. The vet
was not crazy how his eye and tumor looked.. we did an impression on him
and see if we can find more - please send a prayer to JoJo and send a
healing energy that he is going to get better -

Also, I have not seen my feral calico kitty - Angelina for 4 nights - I

not with us anymore - I knew she was not ill - I mentioned to her about

2006-11-22 Thread Gussies mom

So sorry about your baby. It sounds like you have had a very difficult time
lately. I had a bout with FIP a few years ago with cats pulled from animal
control. I had to put my favorite kitten to sleep on my 39th birthday. That's a
birthday I won't forget.
At least your baby had someone as loving as you to take care of him and has
someone to wait for over the bridge.

Hideyo,

I am so sorry to hear about Rikki. It sounds like you
try to do so much to help all the kitties you find. I
wish you didn't have to go through so much sorrow. I
know you must feel like giving up but even with the
babies you have lost you gave them all of your love
and caring. If it hadn't been for you they might not
of ever known that feeling. I know you are
heartbroken after losing so many. You are a wonderful
person that tries to help all these precious babies
you find. I will be praying for you and your other
kitties. Also, I will pray that you get some good
news on JoJo that he doesn't have cancer. You are in
my thoughts and again I am so so sorry.

Also, I have not seen my feral calico kitty - Angelina for 4 nights - I
talked to my AC-and she is either suffering something very acute or may
not with us anymore - I knew she was not ill - I mentioned to her about
my neighbour poisoning cats and she thought, she may be one of the
victims - I can't tell you how angry and devasting I am - she is a such
a beautiful kitty, and was getting so used to me and meoed so loud and
happy to see me - I have so much sadness, despair and angers these days.
I am having a hard time to believe in faith.. may all my babies rest in
peace.. and come back and have a joyful, happy and healthy life

LOL I do the same thing with my Tigger's tail! Tigger loves to present his
hiney end to me. I've read it's a sign of affection.

LOL! Tigger also likes to jump up and stand on my shoulders, and he
always turns around and looks back behind me, which means all you see as I walk
towards you is Tigger butt, tail straight up in the air wagging. I go up to my
boyfriend and say "See me one-eyed parrot? Rraark! Tiggy want a cracker?" LOL!
We also have gotten into this new habit of when Tigger jumps up on the table,
with his tail in the air, we use it like an old style hand water pump, and make
noises "wreeech, wreeech, wreeech, wreeech!", like it's all rusty, LOL!
