CLS Please add Thurston and Carmellia
Two more of our FeLV+ kitties have gone on to the Rainbow Bridge Carmellia March 13,2007 Thurston March 30,2007 I am having a hard time to write this... Little Thurston was only 3 months old when he came to live with me and he only stayed for about 6 months but during that time he had become my very special little buddy... He was always with me to help with what ever I was doing... He came here with his little sister who also passed on a few weeks earlier... They were very close and I am sure that they now have found each other at the Rainbow Bridge... I just can't believe he is gone and I keep feeling he will come pouncing up to see what I am typing... I had so hoped that he would be one of those very few + babies that stay here for a few years but that just wasn't meant to be Carmellia was a middle aged kitty who had been isolated from other kitties and she was a bit over whelmed with all my other kitties... She stayed in the isolation cage most of the 6 months time that she was here... Her own choice... the door was open... She was friendly though and loved attention in her cage... Just the last month she was starting to sneak out and come to me if the others were sleeping... I can't help but wonder if it was the stress of coming into my home that brought on her passing but she did let me know that she knew she was loved before she left... We will miss Thurston and Carmellia as we do all the other that have been with us for their too short life times... Tad and Marie
Re: Delmonte Pet Food recall...
I find little comfort in the identification of specific lots of food - does that mean they just didn't look at others yet? Is it possible the lot I purchased from is contaminated but because it was out before the recall there was no retrospective testing? Scares the pants off of me (and nobody wants that!) If it can be trusted, Masterfoods, which makes some of the higher end foods, has declared their foods have been validated for safety: http://www.mars.com/global/home.html The recent US pet food recall initiated by Menu Foods and other companies does not include any Mars Petcare pet food products. All of our brands, including PEDIGREE, CESAR and THE GOODLIFE RECIPE food for dogs, and WHISKAS, SHEBA, TEMPTATIONS, and THE GOODLIFE RECIPE food for cats, are safe for pets to enjoy. The safety of products not involved in the recall was validated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 23. According to the FDA, pet owners should feel confident feeding unrecalled products to their pets.

I will print it off and take it to the local stores today. The sad thing is, non of the local stores would have known WHICH products were effected here if it were not for me. Their distributors did not give them a list! Phaewryn http://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html Special Needs Cat Resources
Re: CLS Please add Thurston and Carmellia
I'm so sorry Tad. Thurston and Carmellia will be missed. You have my condolences. You must be getting very low on FELV+ cats now, it seems like you didn't have more than 10 when I brought you the Angel Wings babies. Who is still with you at this point? Did you ever get your garage converted over to another cat room like you had planned? Have you begun to rebuild at your other home site where your other house burned down? I know you had lots of plans last time we talked in person, but that's been over a year ago now I suppose. How are all the meezers, they are getting up there in age now, aren't they? Re: Delmonte Pet Food recall...
argh! I am so glad they have you to keep them informed! This whole thing is so scary. I'm feeding Chicken Soup and Science Diet C/D here (I am the food warden because of Antonio and his propensity to make crystals)...but I know full well that something like this can happen no matter what brand you buy. I think it is irresponsible that distributors don't provide the latest information. elizabeth On 4/1/07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I will print it off and take it to the local stores today. Tad and Marie -- I am so sorry that Thurston and Camellia had to leave you. What a sad month you've had. Gentlest of Bridge vibes to the babies you lost. Diane R.
thank you
Thank you. I am such an independent cuss -- never thought I would need support from anyone but you all have done so much to help me through Mama Kitty's illness and her death. This group has been a valuable source of information and comfort. I've come to think of you as family and I just can't see unsubscribing at this point. I hope it is ok to stay. I do have one FeVL+ interest. One of my ferals that I've been feeding for a couple of years -- I named him Zulu -- was captured and neutered by my neighbor (who is involved with cat rescue) last year. He tested positive for FeVL and they would not allow him to be PTS (I am grateful to them for that). He is so very feral that there was no hope of ever being able to adopt him. We all wrestled with the decision but we decided to return him to the wild. We are well outside of the city limits and reasoned that since he is neutered he would be far less likely to bite anyone. They clipped his ear to indicate that he was neutered and vaccinated. The decision to set him free was a controversial one -- but I've seen too many cats here have to live their lives in cages and I pleaded with the cat rescue to set him free and they agreed. We have one neighbor here who has outside kitties - and we contacted him first and sent him a lot of information on FeVL+ (although he was already very well educated) and he agreed that for our Zulu in this situation - this was by far the best decision. Since they released Zulu, I've constantly kept good food in the bistro here at Liz's Kitty Boutique and Day Spa (and sometimes infirmary). He has a healthy appetite and eats very well. Zulu will now let me stand within one foot of the door (inside) while he eats (outside)..but he is constantly on guard to see if he needs to flee for his life. I give him as much peace as possible since meals should be eaten in peace. If we were ever to test him again, we would have to trap him - and he is now very wise to that. I figure the best I can do is keep giving him quality food and clean water and sneak in supplements when I can. As I grieve it is good to know that there are so many of you who do understand. There is nothing more heart wrenching than literally burying someone you love. I can't remember if I told you but one neighbor gave me a beautiful granite stone that he found in Colorado the week before - it is about a foot wide and made of granite. This stone marks Mama's grave...along with a beautiful gift from another neighbor: she brought Mama a beautiful copper shepherd's hook...from this hangs a stone bird bath from a black chain that hangs low beside Mama Kitty's grave. Mama did so love to watch the birdies. Mama's grave is surrounded by roses -- not just the wonderful perfectly formed Hybrid Tea roses for cutting (only fragrant ones planted here) -- but also several OGRs (Old Garden Roses) that are so wonderfully fragrant - like Bayse's purple (a rugosa) and some beautiful pink and fragrant pink bourbon roses..two Loetta Liggett's...can't name them all. Clematis' wind up the old roses that bloom once so that there are blooms on them throughout the season There are also daffodils, irises and beautiful pink and white impatiens. I planted a mini rose beside her grave this weekend - a prolific bloomer..fragrant and a soft peach color..delicate and beautiful like she was. I've been thinking of getting some guardian figures to protect her grave -- like Bastet or some lions...but I mostly want for it to be beautiful and peaceful and a place that calms the spirit of all who visit. The place where she is buried will be the most beautiful part of this yard. It meant so much to me that my parents asked if they could come over to see where she is buried. They cried with me. I am so very fortunate to be surrounded by love. I cannot tell you how many times this weekend I have seen Mama Kitty with me as I was sitting on her porch. I see her everywhere. I know she is with me. Thanks for listening to me ramble...and most of all, thank you to all of you. i love you all so much. elizabeth

Re: thank you
my dear, many of us here no longer have FeLVs physically with us--if you were to leave us, it would only compound the loss! i hope you will send us photos of mama kitty's resting space as the seasons change--what an incredibly beautiful place it is just in imagination! many TNR programs release FeLVs back to the colony, where everyone has already been exposed and most will probably have thrown it off. i'm glad that zulu is allowing you to feed him, even if it is on his terms. maybe someday he'll do what some ferals do--just walk in the door and say, okay, i trust you now. waves to whitey, at phaewyrn's place : and i'm especially happy that mama is keeping your company; she reminding you of just how important your love was to her, as hers was to you. love is love, no matter the form. (and ghost cats generally are a bit neater than their earthly counterparts.) MC On 4/1/07, elizabeth trent [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thank you. MC - your words mean so much. Four of my babies lived outside in the wild when they decided they would move in here (I had nothing to do with it LOL) Othello moved in on Samhain...just walked right in the front door 'trick or treat'. He is such an incredible spirit. Shakiti tore a hole in the storm door and lodged himself between the doors. I wouldn't have known if Phelix hadn't told me...the minute I opened the door - Shakiti ran in and he has had NO interest in leaving since. Lexie walked right up and stood on his hind legs to give me kitty head butts. I am so blessed. Tori is Mama Kitty's baby...she is very special. I have a friend who is a healer and reiki master since the 60s (she is a retired nurse and never advertises her skills - but she should!) - she is one of the most remarkable people I know. Since her very real death experience - she sees things that most people can't. She isn't a cat person per se - but she says that cats don't decide to live with you by accident...there is always a reason. (She also says that I have a lot of Quan Yin energy that she hasn't seen in a very long time - I have no idea what that means LOL) I just feel honored that Mama Kitty chose to spend her time here. She made my life better...although as someone here in the group said recently -- that time you spent caring for them leaves such an empty space. Please kiss Gypsy and your other babies for me. elizabeth On 4/1/07, TenHouseCats [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: my dear, many of us here no longer have FeLVs physically with us--if you were to leave us, it would only compound the loss! i hope you will send us photos of mama kitty's resting space as the seasons change--what an incredibly beautiful place it is just in imagination! many TNR programs release FeLVs back to the colony, where everyone has already been exposed and most will probably have thrown it off. i'm glad that zulu is allowing you to feed him, even if it is on his terms. maybe someday he'll do what some ferals do--just walk in the door and say, okay, i trust you now. waves to whitey, at phaewyrn's place : and i'm especially happy that mama is keeping your company; she reminding you of just how important your love was to her, as hers was to you. love is love, no matter the form. MC, This makes me mad because Friday night I researched Del Monte's voluntary recall, and when I clicked on their 'voluntary recall' link at the top of their homepage, it went to another page that says none of their foods were affected by the recall. Another link on the bottom right of the page went to the same info. The recall info. is buried under their media link! I sent them a nasty email saying they should be more forthcoming about this very important info. :) Wendy --- TenHouseCats [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://www.petconnection.com/blog/2007/03/31/pet-food-recall-del-monte-pulls-products/#more-1353 -- Spay Neuter Your Neighbors! Re: Purina added to the list - dog food only so far
I got this off the BCR email list: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- St. Louis, Missouri, March 30, 2007 . . . Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities. Earlier today the FDA announced the finding of melamine in products related to the March 16 Menu Foods recall, and advised Purina of the source of the contaminated supply. Purina then determined that it had received some quantity from the suspect supplier. The company proactively notified the FDA and immediately began this recall process. Purina is confident that the contaminated wheat gluten has been isolated to this limited production quantity of ALPO Prime Cuts canned products. The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a Best Before Feb. 2009 date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons. Purina's 5.3-ounce Mighty Dog® pouch products, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution on March 16 as part of the Menu Foods recall. ONLY Mighty Dog pouch products and specific date codes of ALPO Prime Cuts canned dog food are being recalled. Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall - including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply. Consumers should immediately stop feeding ALPO Prime Cuts products with the above-listed date codes to their dogs and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet. Purina guarantees all of its products, and consumers can receive the full replacement value of the recalled products. Consumers can visit us at http://www.purina.com/www.purina.com or call 1-800-218-5898, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, to receive more information. Purina is fully cooperating with the FDA and made the decision to voluntarily recall this product in consultation with the FDA. At Purina, nothing is more important to us than the health and well-being of the pets whose nutrition has been entrusted to us by their owners, and we deeply regret this unfortunate situation. We will continue to take any and all actions necessary to ensure the quality and safety of our products. Phaewryn http://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html Special Needs Cat Resources

This is a great group, not just for FELV related issues, but for just about any feline healthcare questions and topics. You can't find a better group of people online, as far as I am concerned. Do stay! I know that just about anything is welcome to be discussed here, and for those things that wander too far off the topic, we do have a Off Topic list, which is something any member here is welcome to join. OT: What to do with feral cat attacking my cats
Hey guys, I am having a problem with a feral cat in our neighborhood. He's a beautiful, big tom, but really mean. He was trapped in our garage one night in winter time when I changed the in/out button on our kitty door to in only. When I came into the garage the next morning, he went nuts; he was really scared before I let him out. I don't mind if he comes into our garage to eat, but my nephew's cat Stretch, who lives in our garage with her sister, has gotten fairly aggressive lately, attacking any cats he sees in our yard, so I don't think he comes into the garage much anymore. I see him around the neighborhood from time to time and I'm pretty sure he's the cat who's attacked two of my cats in the past two weeks, costing me almost $200 at the vet for exams and antibiotics. Both cats' back passenger paws were injured with cat teeth puncture wounds, according to my vet. Do any of you have any suggestions as to how to handle him? If I trap him, what the heck would I do with him? If I give him to animal control, they'll euthanize him, which is not an option for me. If I don't do anything, he'll probably continue to fight neighborhood cats, assuming he is the problem. Any ideas? I don't think he'd ever be friendly, as aggressive and afraid as he is. :) Wendy Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world: Indeed it is the only thing that ever has! ~~~ Margaret Meade ~~~ Bored stiff? RE: What to do with feral cat attacking my cats
Yes, they are both girls and spayed. Stretch has just in the past year gotten aggressive, since our outside kitty Chance disappeared. I don't know what happened to him, but since then Stretch won't allow any other animals around, including attacking my inside cats if I allow them a little time in the front yard. VERY frustrating. I need to call some local feral groups to see if they can handle him. I am just afraid of trapping one of my own if I do it myself; I've never trapped before. I think you're right though...if he's not neutered, that might help a lot. :) Wendy --- Diane Rosenfeldt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My first impulse is to say trap-neuter-release. Any idea on how to find a feral group who will help me with this? A group close to Dallas? I take great pride in doing new things myself, but this is not something I'm comfortable with and I don't want to hurt the cat. Plus, I don't really know where to find him. When I see him, he's here and there in the neighborhood. Thanks! :) Wendy --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Trap him and have him NEUTERED, and then release him. Re: What to do with feral cat attacking my cats
What about the other neighborhood cats??? --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: That's easy to resolve, just don't let your cats out when you have the trap down. Most shelters and many vets have traps they will let people borrow (some charge a deposit). It's actually really easy. You do need to set up a drop off appointment with a vet before you trap, so you wont trap him and then have to store him for days waiting for an appointment. Most vets will give you a sliding drop off appointment if they work with ferals at all, because it's hard to know exactly when one will be trapped, so you can't really set a specific day/time appointment. Oh yeah, you will trap other cats sometimes. If you decide to do this yourself, just let them go and try again. It's really not hard, the traps are easy to understand. The hardest part is that it is time-consuming sometimes. Phaewryn http://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html Special Needs Cat Resources
