Too many cats? Never! I say.

2007-04-16 Thread Taylor Scobie Humphrey
When I moved in to care for my mother a bit ago she said, oh, my
Lord! We can't tell people we have so many cats! (We had seven
together.) So I said, when people ask, you tell them that you have
four and when they ask me I'll tell them that I have three. And
nobody will remember anyway! (Besides, everyone we know is a giant
animal lover!)

We have a four cat limit in our county. :(

But that's beside the point.

What if the city code were 6 dogs and 5 cats and tomorrow they changed
it to 3 dogs and 2 cats? I mean, you can't predict the future. What
if they move somewhere where the code is only 4 dogs?

How many of us have had animals

1. in excess of city codes
2. in excess of what was allowed by our landlord
3. in secret from our landlord
4...well, I think you get the point.

Fortunately we don't have animal limit laws here, though the shelter
limits me to 10 (personal and foster) animals at a time.

They only count litters as 1, though. So all my litters, including
the ones that are almost 2 years old, I count as 1. That's how I get
around it. Heh.

Having just shared my dinner -- frozen turkey divan with alfredo sauce and

that difficult for SOME cats to avoid commercial catfood. A good

Could VO help an asymptomatic FeLV+ cat?

2007-04-16 Thread Lance

Hello all,

I'm sorry that I haven't been posting any lately. I've seen some sad
news, and my heart goes out to all who have lost feline friends in
the last few weeks.

I have a question that will be hard to answer. Really, I'm looking
for thoughts and opinions, since I don't think we know enough about
Virbagen Omega and feleuk. My vet was recently approved by the FDA to
import the standard course of VO for Ember. I have put money aside
for quite awhile, hoping that we would get this chance.

The thing is, Ember is, for the most part, asymptomatic. She did have
an odd spell of anemia (down to 19 last October and subsequently back
to 35 for the last few vet visits, starting in November). She also
had especially low wbc at the same time, which is now back to low-
normal. She seems to have developed a food allergy to Innova EVO dry,
though she tolerates EVO canned (and now Felidae) just fine.

Ember will have another ELISA to verify her status. If she is still
positive, do you think we should go ahead with the VO, even though
she seems to be doing pretty well?

Thanks,

Lance

Houston, We Have a Problem!

The US FDA is at it again. They have been notorious for decades
for their biased attacks and uneven handling of natural, non-drug/
surgery/radiation based health options. This time, though, they
are playing for keeps.

The goal is simple: through a "Guidance" about the regulation of
"CAM" (which they conveniently define as "Complementary and
Alternative MEDICINE" the FDA hopes to serve the interests of Big
Pharma by eliminating all CAM practices and products. ALL of them.

Here's how this deadly game is played:

1. By using the term "Medicine" rather than "Modality" for CAM
practices, the FDA sets the stage so that anyone who is not a
licensed physician is breaking the law by using these modalities
since they are therefore 'practicing medicine without a license'.

2. By using the term "treatment" rather than "therapy", the FDA
limits those who can perform these practices to licensed physicians
and, again, anyone who is not a licensed physician is breaking the
law by using these modalities since only licensed practitioners can
treat. So people using these modalities are therefore 'practicing
medicine without a license'.

3. By using the terms "Medicine" and "treatment" instead of
"Modalities" and "therapy", all substances, including vitamins,
minerals, herbs, co-factors, etc., automatically become untested
drugs since they are being used to prevent, treat, mitigate or cure
disease states. Such use can only legally take place with FDA
approved drugs.

Here's How We Protect CAM Practices,

It's not just as simple as comparing ingredients when
you're talking about this many companies. They have
to compare all of the following: each ingredient, from
which company each came from, and then for each

The death and sickness of what we are dealing with is a the real
nightmare. We've already been surprised about how few
factories/companies/suppliers are truly involved in the making of our
processed pet foods. It can be done. I don't know how long it would
take to track this sort of data base, who knows, maybe someone is in the

that made that ingredient, and which companies
provided each of those, and so on...until they get
down to the raw ingredients for everything that made
that product what it is. Then they also have to look
at batches/dates for all of those, and all the
manufacturing facilities involved. It's a logistical
nightmare...

I don't know Nina. I'm wondering the same thing. My
friend this weekend just bought the Natural Balance
(duck) for her dog that has allergies. He wolfed the
first few nuggets down that she gave him. I saw the
recall today and called her right away to let her know
to keep an eye out. There is no wheat gluten in it as
you said. It looks like they are voluntarily pulling
the venison formula due to customer complaints, which
I think it very responsible of them, considering they
aren't taking any time to verify the info. beforehand.
It could just be a false alarm for all we know if
it's solely based on consumer complaint. I want to
know asap if there really is a problem and if so, what
it is!!! I hope it's not in our food too! Maybe it
does have to do with the Vitamin D thing they are
talking about and not the wheat gluten at all!

It's performed great, but as far as how much it holds,
I haven't opened it yet to clean it out. I need to
remember to do that tonight. It's a small thing, but
bigger than I thought it would be-at least 1 ft. in

Re: more recalls

2007-04-16 Thread Nina
It seems to me that you could feed all the info of every recalled
product into a data base program, (facilities where produced/ingredients
from the same source/etc), and start to get some sort of correlations
that we could actually use to figure out what/which products/companies
have tainted sources in common. You and I can't do that because we
aren't privy to the basic information, but our governmental "guardians"
are and can. Either they are as incompetent as they appear, or they are
protecting corporate business over our welfare. Could these be our only
choices for an explanation of their ineptitude? Stupid or corrupt??
Not very comforting or reassuring, whichever it is.

Marylyn, I have this rubber spongy thing that my friend gave me. They're
cheap, and I love it! It's grayish black and kind of shaped like a rectangle,
but with a curved inner part for you to grip. I think she got it from Drs.
Foster and Smith, but I'm not really sure. But, this thing takes the fur and
rolls it up when you drag is across the upholstery. This is the only way I can
vacuum my furniture-I have to do this first which gets up the majority of the
hair, but the stuff that's left is actually vacuum-able. I also bought some
vacuum spray stuff that's supposed to allow the hair to not stick to furniture,
but it was a mess and didn't really work, and it would get in places I didn't
want. By far, I stand my rubber thing!

I'll look later for a link to one, I couldn't find one on the Drs. Website,
but I know it's out there somewhere. But, I did read while looking that many
people use a rubber glove. I've never tried it. If you do, let us know!

We paid $219 for it at the irobot website, which is
the company that makes Roomba. A better deal than at
Linens and Things or Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They
have a pretty decent special, which includes free
shipping, and a free home dock (normally $60); fairly
cheap for a Roomba. Normally, I am a very frugal

2007-04-16 Thread wendy
I have a pretty intense fear of my house catching
fire, mainly because my pets are defenseless against
it. It's good to know there are things I can do in
the future to help cut down on the chances of fire.
Thanks for the tips guys!

RE: Fires in the home/Update on Jax cats and dogs--off topic now

2007-04-16 Thread Melissa Lind
I can't afford a fire suppression system, but I plan to have everything
hooked on power strips. Did you know that if you only use a microwave less
than seven minutes each day, its clock requires more power than the
microwave itself?! Based upon a family of four, if you'd plug most
appliances into power strips you could save $100 and up per year. Here's a
link to how much you can save by either unplugging your appliances or
keeping them on power strips and just flicking them on when needed.

This was in the January issue of Vegetarian Times (not just for
vegetarians!), and here's the link to the article:
http://www.vegetariantimes.com/document/552

It's short and interesting, and shows you some simple ways to save water,
energy, and money!!

Sorry this is completely off topic!

2007-04-16 Thread Melissa Lind
Marylyn, I have this rubber spongy thing that my friend gave me. They're
cheap, and I love it! It's grayish black and kind of shaped like a
rectangle, but with a curved inner part for you to grip. I think she got it
from Drs. Foster and Smith, but I'm not really sure. But, this thing takes
the fur and rolls it up when you drag is across the upholstery. This is the
only way I can vacuum my furniture-I have to do this first which gets up the
majority of the hair, but the stuff that's left is actually vacuum-able. I
also bought some vacuum spray stuff that's supposed to allow the hair to not
stick to furniture, but it was a mess and didn't really work, and it would
get in places I didn't want. By far, I stand my rubber thing!

I'll look later for a link to one, I couldn't find one on the Drs. Website,
but I know it's out there somewhere. But, I did read while looking that many
people use a rubber glove. I've never tried it. If you do, let us know!

I saw something about rubber gloves (like for washing dishes) getting up fur
on upholstery. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you guys know that Roombie (our new
Roomba Sage for pet owners) went on it's maiden voyage
this morning. The kitties were somewhat alarmed at
first, but by the time it cleaned for 45 minutes and
docked itself, they weren't too concerned with it.
Smookie ran over to it when it stopped and has been
trying to get the brushes out from underneath it.
It's too cute.

So far, Roombie did a bang-up job of vacuuming my tile
floors-the living room, kitchen, and eating area along
with the front entry way and hallway leading from
that. That's as far as it could go since all the
doors were shut along the hallway. I was very
surprised with how well it patterned itself while
cleaning. It got in and out of tight spaces. It even
tried to eat Smookie's feather toy, but I rescued it.

Normally, I am a very frugal
person, but I have bought three vacuum-cleaners in the
past few years at about $50 each at Walmart, and all
have died. Plus, I don't actually have to do the
vacuuming myself, so that itself was worth the extra
money. With the tile, as opposed to the carpet we had
that hid a lot of dirt, every speck of dirt shows up,
and I'm having to sweep every day as it is. So all in
all, I'm happy as of day one. We'll see after a month
or so if Roombie was worth it.

The other thing with the Merrick's is, at least among
the 6 or 7 flavors they had available at my pet store,
about half of them contained some sort of shellfish
(Crab, Crawfish or Lobster).

My wife is severely allergic to shellfish and we don't
bring any into the house, so that ruled out about half
of what they had available right up front.

Stitch seems to like the Pot Pie variety, trying
something else tonight...

That is exactly what the City of Louisville (KY) did. They just passed a law
limiting the number of outside dogs to 3 unless you have over a 1/2 acre yard

clause to grandfather larger dog families in.

We have a four cat limit in our county. :(

Well, I think pet limit laws are archaic and silly and should be abolished.

That's how I get
around it. Heh.

I guess I should have qualified that statement by saying I'm having

first--there are several different companies--but then what I will do is
speak with the local firefighters here and see what they have to say as to

Well, I think pet limit laws are archaic and silly and should be abolished.

That's how I get
around it. Heh.

Re: OT: Roombie-the new Roomba - for those of you considering purchasing one

Normally, I am a very frugal
person, but I have bought three vacuum-cleaners in the
past few years at about $50 each at Walmart, and all

:)

Re: OT: Pregnant Feral Kitty....Questions

I can see both sides of the issue. However, being the softy that I am, I would
have trouble aborting the kits. My Tigger and Taylor are the offspring of a
feral mom. I guess that's why I feel the way I do. Good luck with the little
girl Terrie and let us know how it goes.

I disagree with aborting kittens unless you absolutely have no option. When I
adopt kittens too young to be altered, the spay/neuter is included in the
adoption fee and must be done at my vet. Bingo, if they are late getting them
fixed I know it since I havent gotten a bill from my vet. I call and if they
don't get them altered I take the cat back (its only happened once) then mom
and all babes are fixed and the cycle for that family stops.

My Pippin tested positive at 6 weeks of age on the ELISA test. Five months
later we had her retested using the IFA test; she tested negative. She is the
reason I joined this group. :) My other three kitties, Tigger (14 years),
Taylor (14 years) and Bob (8 years) are negative for FeLV (they are also
