Re: Felvtalk Digest, Vol 30, Issue 48

2007-07-14 Thread Heather Wienker

I want to thank everyone for their care & concern for the kittens and Mom I
posted about.

If I had a spare room or something I could at least keep the one kitten who
is being sent to the sanctuary tomorrow (that we don't want it to go to) but
I don't even have a room to put it in temporarily, I'm in a small condo with
kitty population problems (including rescues) as it is...just don't want to
sound like one of those "unwilling" people, as if I were, I wouldn't already
have my existing situations:)

I do ferals, feed approx. 12 places each evening, 3 each a.m., probably 50
cats total and find myself involved in everything from TNR (of course)
to getting care for injured cats and also rescue for friendly strays and
such. It's like a full time job, and unfortunately I have one of those too,
like everyone else here who loves cats, we find ourselves overloaded.

We do have a more comfortable situation locally (still not a "home"
environment but has a/c, heat in winter, smaller population with people I
trust 150%) that the kittens can go to in a few months but the one lady is
not willing to keep her kitten any longer in wait so that's why she's taking
it to the other sanctuary tomorrow. And, we've been unable to find anyone
willing to foster it. Being social kittens, of course, living in a home
would be best but we are very thankful to have a wonderful place for them
down the road...just heartbroken that this one kitten has no place to go
until that time so is being sent elsewhere by the lady who has it (she found
& took that kitten two days before I trapped Mom and the other 2 kittens,
another lady she works with has the 4th).

Just wanted to clarify. Vets haven't been optimistic about them throwing
the virus since 2 went from negative to positive but of course we will keep
hoping/retesting. We were using Transfer Factor and will probably order
more in hopes of helping them.

Thank you all again!

Heather

I'd like to thank everybody for the support and

I love digital photography, and it's made great

This is a wonderful group of people, and I'm grateful
for all the help and support I got. I joined because I
was trying to help a FeLeuk cat (not mine) find a

the good work you all do, caring for these kitties.

Again, thanks.

I'm fairly certain the remaining kitten, Mickey, was from the same
litter as all the others, as he was the same size as the others, and the
same color as one of them.
The others succumbed between the ages of 1 and 2 (they were 3 months old
when they found me in December 2003):
Caramel died on Thanksgiving 2004, Levi January 2005, and Snoball and
Flavia on July 6, 2005.

Kerry PS If you're being told your email is awaiting approval it's very
likely because the string is too long. It just happened with this one so
I've chopped off the rest.

Since 2001, I've had 9 FELV+ kitties (I have to list them:
Calawalla Banana Booboo, Mittens Mr. Black Kitty, Dallas, Houston,
Felicity, Chloe, Oliver, B.B.).

The first 5 are now dead, all but one died at age 2.5-3 years.
Actually I never know how old Mr. Black Kitty was - he looked old,
but probably was not.

The last 4 are alive, and 3 of them are over 10 years old (and have
had the virus a while, before I got them). B.B. is 4+ years old.

I have not had any live past 2.5-3 years old. if I got any more
that were younger than that age, I'd put them on daily low-dose
oral interferon alpha, with the theory that the dose supplements
what their body isn't successfully creating to support the immune
system.

HIDEYO, MY BIGGEST QUESTION IS HOW COMMON IS IT FOR
THESE KITTENS BORN TO A FeLV+ QUEEN TO THROW OFF THE
VIRUS? THERE WERE SIX KITTENS FROM THIS LITTER AND
ALL WERE ADOPTED BY LOVING PEOPLE WHO ARE WAITING AND
HOLDING ON TO THEIR KITTIES, HOPING THAT THEY WILL BE
ABLE TO FIGHT THIS DISEASE OFF. THEY WERE ADOPTED OUT
OF A RESCUE ORGANIZATION IN MONTANA THAT HAS SINCE
CHANGED IT'S POLICY...WHERE IT HAS NOW DECIDED TO TEST
ALL MOMMY CATS WITH LITTERS AS THE BABIES ARE TOO
YOUNG TO TEST SOMETIMES BEFORE BEING ADOPTED OUT...AT
LEAST IF THE MOMMY TESTS POSITIVE THE PEOPLE CAN BE
TOLD AND IF WILLING TO TAKE ON A POSITIVE KITTEN CAN
TEST AGAIN LATER. IT IS A TRICKY SITUATION NO MATTER
HOW YOU LOOK AT IT AS A MOMMY CAT COULD TEST A FALSE
POSITIVE...AND THIS COULD CONDEMN A WHOLE LITTER OF
KITTENS...THANKS TO YOU OR ANYONE OUT THERE
EXPERIENCED IN WHAT I AM GOING THROUGH HERE...GLENDA

Since 2001, I've had 9 FELV+ kitties (I have to list them: Calawalla
Banana Booboo, Mittens Mr. Black Kitty, Dallas, Houston, Felicity,
Chloe, Oliver, B.B.).

The first 5 are now dead, all but one died at age 2.5-3 years. Actually
I never know how old Mr. Black Kitty was - he looked old, but probably
was not.

The last 4 are alive, and 3 of them are over 10 years old (and have had
the virus a while, before I got them). B.B. is 4+ years old.

I have not had any live past 2.5-3 years old. if I got any more that
were younger than that age, I'd put them on daily low-dose oral
interferon alpha, with the theory that the dose supplements what their
body isn't successfully creating to support the immune system.

Heather, I read your email...never tried to answer an
email on this site, so hope it works...Anyway, I feel
very sorry for you and the kitties. I am new to this

a month ago, I discovered this site and have been
reading everything possible trying to understand these
diseases and find hope for the kitten I have.I have a
little girl, Bengal mix, polydactyl...so intelligent,
so beautiful and so healthy, but FeLV+...
My vet told me there is a chance when the FeLV comes
through the queen there is a chance the kittens could
beat the disease with good diet and environments, no
stress and could someday test negative. If there is
anyone out there that can give people in our situation
some hope our kittens can beat this disease please
share what you know that we do not...Thank you.

RE: FELV kittens

2007-07-14 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Hi Glenda and Heather
I haven't read your previous posts (and I'm at work, so have to be
quick) but just wanted to say I had 5 FeLV positive kittens, and one
slightly older cat who was negative but who lived with them (they came
as a colony so she had already been exposed). I gave them 13 supplements
daily and tried to keep their environment stress-free (they lived in my
2nd bedroom). Sadly 4 of the kittens succumbed, but one threw off the
virus and is now negative. The older cat has remained negative. So, yes,
there is hope. But even tho the others didn't make it, I know I gave
them quality of life, and love, for the brief time they had. As you are
doing for your sweet furballs. Your vet sounds a real goodie Glenda
(many unfortunately are not so enlightened). Welcome to the list, and I
wish you both all the best for you and your kitts. Kerry M.
