[Felvtalk] Felv Booster
Hello Everyone.I'm new here and this question is about the Felv vaccine. My cat was tested for feline leukemia and tested negative. On October 16, 2011 she received her Felv#1 vaccine and was due for her booster (Felv#2) three weeks later. Due to financial circumstances I was unable to take her back. I'm still struggling financially so I haven't made an appointment. My question is, how effective is the felv vaccine she did receive? Also, when I take her back will she have to be tested again? My cat is an indoor outdoor cat. Melody___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Hi Melody! Welcome to the forum. I'm no expert but I do know that if you don't get the second shot, then your cat is not fully protected, if at all. You will have to start over (as if your kitty never received the first shot) when you are able to get her back to the vet. I sympathize with you regarding financial circumstances. It's a tough economy :( The best way to protect her until you are able to get her both shots is to keep her indoors. I agree - if you keep the cat strictly inside, you wouldn't even have to use the vaccine.you also must understand that even if you got the required booster, any vaccine is only about 80% effective. We had them combo tested with the standard Snap test. All five tested positive. We had blood work done on one cat and it came back negative. We assumed the tests were done wrong so they redid them two days ago. All four remaining cats tested positive AGAIN. We had blood work taken on all four, sent it in, and all four came back negative. This is really scary stuff. Cats are killed all the time because they test positive. Had we heard about these cats being in a shelter testing positive it's not likely we could have taken them in. Re: [Felvtalk] Very Scary Testing results!
When she says bloodwork I wonder what she means. You can take blood and send it to a lab where they perform the same type of ELISA test as done in the vet's office, but they do it differently at the lab (my vet called it a well test). They have to take a bigger blood sample for that. It's still an ELISA test, which looks for small fragments of the virus in the bloodstream, but a little more reliable than doing it with the snap test kit. Then there's the IFA test which is a totally different test and it looks for the virus in the white blood cells/bone marrow. If by bloodwork she means the IFA test then it's very possible that it's negative and the combo test is positive and that doesn't mean the combo test is wrong. The combo test could be right but the virus just hasn't progressed into the bone marrow. So when she says bloodwork it's hard to know for sure whether that means the combo test was right or wrong. I'd like to know because if she's talking about two ELISA tests (one done in the vet's office with a snap test kit and one sent to the lab) and they keep coming up differently then there's definitely a problem with the snap test kits. “I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn’t….the pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further.” – Mark Twain From: korruptaki...@gmail.com Date: Tue, 6 Dec 2011 14:14:02 -0800 To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: [Felvtalk] Very Scary Testing results! Re: [Felvtalk] Very Scary Testing results!
Were the second tests also SNAP? Or the IFA? True, it is scary how many cats tests false positives! I had two such cats (one had the Snap AND IFA - positive both times.) One cat had only the Snap.then I did the IFA for both, and BOTH were negative. I purposely found mine a buddy from another state. Can you imagine how I would have felt if the IFA had been negative for only one of them? I would have exposed the healthy one to a sick one, thinking that both were negative. horrors! [Felvtalk] FeLV friendly vets in Charleston
Hello all, Our time in Japan will finally be ending next summer. I have been so happy with my Japanese vet and credit him with the amazing health of my Fuji, who was diagnosed with Mediastinal Lymphoma 17 months ago. She was given 2-3 months to live and has exceeded that by over a year due to Dr. Morisaki's incredible care. He does not follow traditional protocols to the letter, but has my full confidence and respect. Fast forward: Yesterday, he diagnosed my little VooDoo with cancer as well. His diagnosis was based on a needle draw of fluid in the chest cavity. He showed me the cancer cells in a microscope photo.I asked several times, same as Fuji and the response was yes. It seems that VooDoo has the same type of cancer and is receiving the same treatment. Fuji just started a maintenance program last month, after the original protocol was altered to take into consideration her consistently low white blood cell count. I am hoping that VooDoo can keep his WBC up and allow for a shorter treatment cycle. That way, by the time we move, he may be able to move to maintenance as well. I will be looking for a doctor that will respect the treatment that has already occurred and continue on the same path. Thanks for any input you may have. Re: [Felvtalk] fire decals -- animals inside
Our volunteer fire department gives out stickers so you can list how many and what kind of pets you have but I worry now having heard about cats running back inside. I don't know how dedicated the volunteers would be in getting them out and how would they contain them once they are out. I am afraid they would be so busy with the fire, they might not spend too much time trying to get them out. Thinkthe best bet for me (in the middle of the woods) is to build an otdoor fenced in area where they could put them, that might work out better for the firemen. Especially since round here, cats are considered moer of a nusiance and they would not think of thm as I do. So has Nitnoy who only slaps and hisses, especially Harley since he thinks his life's mission is to harrass the others to death, plus he is just going on 2 years and has more energy than anyone else. I had put him in there while I cleaned the bedroom cages. Part of this morning's bowel movement was hard formed the remainder was formed and contained a lot more liquid. I bought some Paul Newman canned will feed that exclusviely tonight. have not tried yogurt. last night fed cooked beef liver and milk and cooked sweet potato, . . . quit the variety? He is on a waiting list for the local SPCA. I have identified him as a biter to them. he is a sweetie as I have said before who wants to claim me. I am attached to him but no way can it be. thanks for listening. ideas? I go back to the vet on Saturday. will tell her about your comments. thank you. cz Date: Mon, 5 Dec 2011 09:14:32 -0500 From: g...@optonline.net To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] heart murmur Animals (and people) with any heart problems need CoQ10 desperately! Between 30 mg and 50 mg daily! One of our cats has cardiomyopathy and renal failure…she was diagnosed 1 ½ yrs. ago. She’s on a few drugs and sub-q fluids and I also supplement her with CoQ10 – she’s doing really well. We don’t know how long she’s had the problem…she’s about 12 yrs. old now. They are measures in fractions of 6. For instance, a 2 out of 6, or 2/6, is not as serious a a 4/6. We had a cat who was diagnosed with a murmur, and we did not have the money to get further testing done on him at that time because he was fresh off the street, A stray that just followed me inside one day after I had fed him. lol He looked awful, mainly because he had been living as a stray with a bad flea allergy. What a fantastic cat he proved to be! Well, all was ell for about 6 months, then he started fainting (syncope), and we were told to get the echo done. We did, at a specialist here in San Diego, with the help of some awesome MySpace friends and a chip in, and it was learned then that he had cardiomyopathy with pulmonary edema and aortic stenosis. His lungs were so full of liquid and his heart had the all too common cardiomyopathy cats get. I was told by the specialty hospital vet that it often happens that these disorders, heart murmur and cardiomyopathy, go hand in hand (but not in every case). Zoh's heart murmur was a 4/6, which is significant. They put Zoh on 3 meds which he took for the rest of his life, every day. Furosemide (lasix) for the fluid in the lungs, Atenolol, a blood pressure med, and one more bp mes, I cannot remember the name of, but he got better. I was told cats with cardiomyopathy rarely live long, and Zoh lived 2 more years till he succumbed to a heart attack and died in my arms, in my room. I am hoping this info of my experience with heart murmurs might give you something to talk about to your vet. I would def ask what the meds are, what class, and why he is prescribing them, as well as get a definite diagnosis/prognosis in his professional opinion. It sounds like he did not give you enough info.
Re: [Felvtalk] Felv Booster
Hi Melody, Does your vet use Care Credit? I use that and you can pay it off, without interest if you do it within the promotional time. How long depends on how much you charged. Higher amounts, you can take up to 6 months to pay. If the charge is less than $300.00, my vet usually holds the charges until I reach $300 and then sends it in. Thaat is unless I take too long to get to that amount. It usually gives me 2 - 3 months to pay it off. Makes it nice when $$ is short. Especially when the charges get to $600.00. If I did not have Care Credit, guess I would have to skip eating for a while. You can look Care Credit up on line at Care Credit.com and get the information and then ask your vet if he will sign up with them. Lynda Wilson longhornf...@verizon.net wrote: Hi Melody! Melinds, maybe your vet in Japan might know of some vets where you are moving. Worth a try. At least find someone who will work with him to treat your babies. Re: [Felvtalk] Very Scary Testing results!
It is possible the SNAP tests were positive an IFA was negative because the virus had not progressed to the bone marrow. I also wonder if the SNAP tests that were positive were done on the new 3way tests. Our shelter stopped using them because they were not dependable. Sent: Nov 22, 2011 11:16 PM I need to share this so it can get to the FELV Lists and whomever is following this testing debacle. We took in 5 Persians last week. The vet office in Santa Cruz is going to follow up with the company, but if there is anyone else out there tracking this stuff, I want to get the information to them.
