?-our low cost clinic vax our rescue cat first adn then discovered cat is felv+
I work with an online rescue group--the clinic came highly recommended. we sent 10 cats to be s/n vetted. I recd phone call one cat is fiv+ and one is felv+. I said, okay-dont' pts-I'll find them refuge or something. then I got the bill emailed to me adn there's a charge for felv vax on the felv+ cat. I email back--hello--isn't this charge wrong? here's the answer I recd back-pls help or point me to research about the safety or truth to this "method" -- Because of the assembly-line methods we use, all the vaccines are drawn up and administered prior to drawing blood; therefore we don't test first then vaccinate based on the test results. The vaccine won't harm a cat who tests positive and won't affect the test results. I'm told this is how other high-volume clinics do it although I've never directly confirmed that. what's ironic is same person "saved" another felv+ that came into her clinic--and needs to find refuge for it also. she loves that cat. I would like to find research to say to the clinic, hey don't vax first and then test because---cornell say this or another vet univ.said this. For now I've learned to say, HEY test first then vax. it's my da*n dime paying for these rescued cats! $10 saved on a felv vax is two days of boarding fees. thanks for any help, barbara
anyone ever have a positive turn negative?
Carrie Hi, my cat Mr. Bean (foster kitten I got at 4 wks old)probably at 2-3 yrs old(dont have his vet records handy) started drooling horribly so took to vet and his cbc came back postive. the vet told me to research research research so that's how I found this group adn holisticat website. I put Bean on mega c plus, vit E 200 units daily, a&d once a week, better quality canned food(too many cats to feed raw diet..), no dry food except a lttle as a treat, ambertech ambrotose on advice of my chinese medicine vet and some chinese pills he gave me(sorry long day so dont' remember squat right now)and pet tinic 1xday- last year tested negative--he lost most of his teeth but his fur is beautiful and breath is good. yet the same stuff did not turn Clancy negative--but he no longer has those horrible allergies adn all his fur grew back. Now i have 2 rescued cats down in Georgia who went in today for neutering at low cost clinic and one is fiv+ and one is felv+. the fiv+ i can place but the felv+ has to go back to boarding until our online rescue group can find placement for him. i dont' mind--makes up for the one cat we were going to rescue but it got adopted. yeay! but then the pound called me to say new adopters called to say cat had tested felv+ at vet and vet said to pts. the pound knows our group will look for sanctuary/homes but too late for that cat. at least it did not die in gas chamber. barbara

they have taken in felv+ cats also. I can't recall offhand which member here even sent a felv+ there in the few years I've been on this list. Sue Marino, a rescuer/vet tech from Muttshack runs her own pet hospice in NY. She has about 200 sick and dying animals and is now having problems with the town & her neighbors. They are trying to get her thrown out for "running a business" when in fact it is a non-profit org trying to give these disabled pets a better life before they die. The following link goes directly to the town's reps that are ruling whether or not to throw her out of her house and off her property, along with the pets. It's Sue Marino at Angel's Gate Hospice. Please take a minute and write to show your concern. Click here: Welcome to the Town of Smithtown MORE INFO ON SUSAN HERE: Some of you know that there is a small group of neighbors surrounding Angel's Gate Animal Hospice in Fort Salonga, NY who are trying to close them down. This is not news, as there have been complaints in the past but to no avail. However, now this group is taking it to the next level by hiring an attorney and trying to pursue legal action. Angel's Gate has always maintained an open door policy and has been inspected, interviewed, observed, and/or been paid surprise visits by the Department of Health, Department of Public Safety, Buildings Department, Animal Control, The ASPCA, and the Smithtown Town Attorney and have been found in no violation of any wrong doing. In fact, founder Susan Marino won the ASPCA Founders Award in 2003 for her work with animals. Since all else has failed, this small faction of the neighborhood is now trying to claim that Angel's Gate is running as a "business" when in fact it is a nonprofit providing the only services of it's kind on Long Island. Among those supporting the hospice is the remaining majority of Angel's Gate neighbors. Re: Felvtalk Digest, Vol 15, Issue 31/2felv+ kittens need home- pet cats in rochester ny
Hi Amy, I sent you some info for hopeful placement ideas for the felv+ cats of dead owner. if you dont' receive it, let me know. or at least i hope i sent it correctly... barbara Lowe From: Amy Wilkins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: 2 FeLV+ Kittens Need Home - Please Read To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 I'm writing about 2 male white kittens in Rochester, NY that desperately need a home. I just got a call from a woman about her son who died suddenly and unexpectedly. I don't know the details but I know he had 2 kittens that he loved dearly. He adopted them at 6 weeks old from our local humane society and a few weeks later they both tested positive for leukemia. He had fallen in love with them and decided to keep them, so they have been in a loving home since September. Now that the son has passed, the poor boys have no home. The family called about taking them to our humane society and they said they would euthanize them. The family is devastated and just wants to find a home for these 2 cats. I am pregnant and have lost my job because of being so sick and there is just no way I can add 2 more to my batch right now. I have been in bed sick for the past 18 weeks and can't even think about introducing 2 cats right now. I feel awful for this family and for these cats that are so sweet and full of life. I know it is a long shot but can anybody take them? I would help set up transport to get them to a new home. Amy Weygandt Woof Wagon www.woofwagon.com

any hope/suggestions for 2 felv+ Georgia kitties and 3 Fiv kitties?
Hi, My previous post has the info for these felv cats. these all do not have to go together. they are all now presently under the care of www.savethekitties.org but they are not set up for special needs kitties nor do they have the funds to keep them in board nor is it fair to the gentle souls to keep them in confinement.(right now they are having a fundraising challenge for hospital bills for a kitten hopefully recovering from distemper) Does anyone know anyone who might have room at a sanctuary or in their home to take on any of these felv+/fiv cats? the org. will arrange transport and vetting. the felv+ info is on my previous post, Hello again! the fiv cats are Gracie, Fabio, and Ariel The 3 kids are deemed veryy friendlynon agressive. All are altered and up to date with vaccinations. Gracie and Fabio are still in boarding need to get out asap due to confined space outdoors. Ariel is currently in a foster situation but needs to go asap as well. their photos are on the savethekitties.org website-here's link, go to the post marked gianna today 2:58. 2 cats are long hair-one calico, one tabby, the other is b/w tuxedo. http://www.savethekitties.org/forums/forums/2/421/ShowPost.aspx#421 I am going to contact Angel's gate--didn't someone on the list bring their kitty there? if that person is still on this list, can you let me know if you are happy with that place? thank you for reading and any suggestions/leads, Barbara
hello again!
Hello hello! I've been away so long. (and probably most of you are scratching your heads and thinking, who is this anyway??? ha!) Been dealing with my d*g's cancer and he's hanging in there. no new lumps yet. Even adopted a 2nd older d*g as companion last Oct. and during the day they sleep next to each other but at night, she takes the couch and he still pushes my husband off our bed.then the cats curl up next to the dog. My sister's cancer has not returned either so we're very happy about that. My Mr. Bean is still negative though he only has one tooth left. My other positive Clancy unfortunately still tested positive so not able to start up fostering again for local shelter. So I've been doing my bit for rescuing online. WWW.savethekitties.org recently contacted me concerning two black positives they have in foster care in Georgia that need a home or safe haven. This is an amazing group along with www.savingshelterpets.com that work online to rescue cats from high kill pounds. There is one black female approx 1 yr old and a male approx 2 yrs old. both very friendly but they are in cages at foster care and their care is draining the group's pocketbook and a decision will have to be made soon. Both kitties are in temporary boarding in Griffin, GA; they are rescues from the high kill gas shelter at Spalding County, GA. SavetheKitties will arrange/provide transport to foster/adopt location. Both have had distemper and rabies vaccinations as well as initial de-worming; SavetheKitties will do distemper booster. In their combo testing, both tested positive for Felv. Neither has been spayed/neutered at this time, however, SavetheKitties will either provide spay/neuter prior to transport or fund after transport. I have posted their ads on the adoption page along with photos. I would gladly help out if anyone can take these two in. I've missed the daily emails from this group and crying and laughing along with you all. Most of all, I've missed knowing there are others out there who would not shudder when I say, "oh I have 7 cats and 2 dogs." take care, Barbara angels Jelly Roll, Lenny, Cali, Mad dog Madison in-house wreckers-Mr. Bean, clancy, dopey, Puff Daddy, Dieffenbacher, milk Dud, Princess 7 Layer eats-a-lot and Frasier and Sadie
Re: question bout kittens....
i blame myself for letting Jelly Roll come into contact with Lenny (who tested postive) when they were kittens(3-4 weeks old). even tho Lenny died under 1 yr old, Jelly lived two plus years but crappy virus still got the best of him. keep them separated. I loved lenny but I hate myself for what happened to Jelly Roll. barbara - Original Message - From: "TenHouseCats" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "FeLVTalk" Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2005 1:16 PM Subject: question bout kittens > okay, group, need opinions here. > > i currently am the estrogen zone for my part of the state--turned my > front room (formerly cat-free space, for doing crafts) into a nursery. > four condo cages, one floor-to-ceiling cat tree, scratching posts, > lots of toys, etc. 3 big windows, a/c, their own bathroom (well, their > own close-by water supply, at least!). > > i currently have four nursing moms, and 24 kittens. Re: Pls help increase awareness "knowing wrong things about FIV+ cats"
sounds good to me. it's been such an uphill battle just with felv+. just a nitpick. you wrote vegetarians, you do mean veterinarians, right? and if you do mean veterinarians, i would think such a paper would be very time consuming because of the research involved.(years) and take a long time to get published. I keep meaning to print up a list of websites with felv+ info to give out to my vets because I get so many phone calls from them whenever another patient's cat tests positive and they need someone to talk to. a list of fiv+ sites would be good also. again the problem is if the vets are old school or just don't want to be bothered, they might not even want to be bothered giving out this kind of info to their clients because their clients would then seek a different vet's help in taking care of their cats which translates as a loss of income to the first vet. has any magazine like Cat Fancy done any articles on fiv lately? I know Angel's Gate founder recently published a book think it's called Getting Lucky--dont' know what the contents are. She might have contacts tho or suggestions. (i forget who it is on the list recently brought a cat there). also Denise Flaim at Newsday here on Long Island also published a book last year I believe. she has a weekly pet column--maybe write her to ask to do an article on fiv. (i don't get newsday anymore--no time to read!) Or google other pet columnists for other area newspapers to hit them up. i will ask a local rescue for the info on fiv's. I know of one cat. barbara - Original Message - From: Hideyo Yamamoto To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Thursday, June 23, 2005 2:11 PM Subject: FW: Pls help increase awareness "knowing wrong things about FIV+ cats" Please let me know if you have any suggestions or thought – or do you think it’s a damn idea? Hideyo From: Hideyo Yamamoto Sent: Thursday, June 23, 2005 12:11 PMTo: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'Subject: Pls help increase awareness "knowing wrong things about FIV+ cats" Since I have been on this list, I have learned a lot about wrong doings of how FIV+ cats have been treated everywhere in the world due to the misconception and lack of knowledge or knowing wrong information – I am aware that there have been and are going to be many many FIV+cats who have been and are going to be euthanized just because they tested positive (whether it’s false or right information) – I am not sure what the best way to do about it – but we have what we call “living examples” of how less threatening FIV+ cats are to FIV negatives and how normal life FIV+ can live for a long time – and wanted to somehow make some social movements on FIV cats so that FIV cats are treated better at the shelters, rescue groups, and by vets, clinics, and by individual who found out their (new or existing cats) are tested positive – Again, I am not sure how to go about it – because anything that is published publicly needs to come from a vegetarian, but wanted to compile the information by gathering your experience and present them somehow so that this information are going to be spread via a vegetarian conference or published via pet magazines, newsletters or etc …..I am thinking of sending an email to Dr. Addie (who does research at Univ of Glasgow – she has dedicated last two decades on FIP cats – but she might have an idea as to which doctor might be supportive of this idea – I also thought of contacting to Dr. Yamamoto (I think that’s her name) who discovered the virus in 1986 and to see if she has any suggestions or she can help somehow based on our experience. Anyway, I want to do something to protect lives of FIV+ kitties in the world – if anyone (even if you have done so already) can you send me the information as to how many and how long FIV+ cats (and negatives) you have and how long they have been integrated, and whether they have been transmitted or not (and the date of the last test done of negatives) and health status of FIV cats (we believe the FIV status does not have any averse affect on their life span – and I would like to advocate this fact also Please let me know what you think of the idea and any information you might be able to help. Re: [FivCats] I need placement help for Domino
what's with this 'wet food increases tartar and placque' statement ? and where is that woman & her "sanctuary" in westchester? that place sounds to me like anther angel's wings in the making situation. can we find out where that house is and ask to have it investigated? even if just by another rescue so that in case it is okay rather than reporting her first to aspca who would remove animals because she's over the legal limit. barbara - Original Message - From: Hideyo Yamamoto To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Monday, June 20, 2005 7:09 PM Subject: FW: [FivCats] I need placement help for Domino Please allow me to cross post this in case you can help- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of siberskiiSent: Sunday, June 19, 2005 6:32 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [FivCats] I need placement help for Domino Some of you may remember me from last month. I have MS and now Domino has had 2 Western blots (the 2d was just done at Cornell), both with FIV+ results. Domino has been a strictly indoor cat, has a dog companion (our Golden), my kids and us. She only eats Nutro dry food, which is probably why her teeth and gums are in such good shape. I have read with interest the various postings here re: people with Lupus, HIV+ etc., who have FIV+ cats. The bottom line is that for those of us who are immune-compromised, there are no definitive answers about our risks with FIV+ cats. Joel posted here a little while ago about the spread of bacteria between people and cats; others have written about cat scratch disease being transmitted to humans. Unless you are immune compromsed, no one really can tell the those of us who are, whether it's worth the risk to keep an FIV+ cat around or not, or whether there's a risk at all. It's a complete gamble.I previously posted that I am not willing to take the gamble, not with my health. Too many doctors have been wrong about my disease, its progression, the drugs I've taken for MS & their side effects; I can't take the word of fellow kitty-lovers about FIV+ if my own human docs, the two vets I've seen & the Cornell Feline Health Clinic have question marks about this. So yes, I decided that I needed to place Domino elsewhere for both our sakes.I contacted the rescue group where we got Domino. They connected me to a lady nearby, in Westchester County, NY where I live. She has 17 FIV+ cats. Eight are upstairs with a dominant female, 9 are downstairs in runs or cages because they either spray or are too timid to use their litter boxes (at least acc to the lady). She feeds them all a little wet food to keep them "hydrated" (what happened to water?), which we all know increases tarter and plaque, as well as dry food. She has told me that many of her cats have had theirteeth pulled, and that some are completely toothless. She also told me that she has litter boxes all over the house, that some cats sleep on her bed, on pillows or selsewhere, and that she keeps mountans of amoxicillin around. She also has two small gogs plus a German Shepherd. She became angry when I asked if I could inspect the premises, telling me that I was being insulting to her, and she said that the only thing I could see or do at her house (which I can't, since her house isn't accessible) would be to put Domino in what she described as a large dog-sized cage in the kitchen to say goodbye. Then Domino would remain in the cage for a full month while the other cats got used to her and vice versa. Apart from my discompfort with all the above, it seems only logical to me that with so many FIV+ cats around, the chances of spreading illness, viruses and bacteria increases exponentially, thereby increasing the rish to all the cats. Needless to say, I am not inclined to place Domino with this lady. But I need to place Domino somewhere - not in a foster home, not with a resue group or a shelter, but in a permanent home where she will be safe and happy without zillions of other cats around who might scare, intimidate or weaken her. I have reactivated my yahoo email, because I know that some of you were trying to get back to me last month but my yahoo e-mail got loused up somehow and the e-mails bounced. I would be most grateful if anyone here would be willing to take in Domino, age 1 1/2, black tuxedo cat with greenish eyes, asymptomatic now, companionable but not an "in your face" cat, loves water, especially out of people glasses with ice! and likes her ears rubbed. If anyone is relatively close to us, and would allow my daughters to call for the first few months or whatever to check on how Domino's doing, since they're heart-broken too, maybe even more than me, I'd appreciate hearing fr

if you go to the military mascots page and read the stories about some of the mascots, it's even more heartbreaking when some military brass then vetoes an animal being shipped stateside when the necessary money has been raised. it costs big bucks to bring an animal back-the vet bills, transport, etc--and remember the military is not paid big bucks. barbara - Original Message - From: Cherie A Gabbert To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Thursday, June 09, 2005 11:41 AM Subject: Re: OT: US military killing dogs in Iraq I am sick and weeping for those dogs.BONNIE J KALMBACH <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: http://usmilitarykillsdogs.allsupportgroup.info/www.elephants.com Have a purrfect day Cherie

which is another reason why I support groups like www.militarymascots.org that are trying to help our soldiers who have adopted cats and dogs in their units and wish to bring them stateside to keep them safe and give them homes. I wish North Shore animal league had spent their 30 grand on helping bring home these soldiers' pets rather than 30 dogs from China in their grand publicity stunt. barbara - Original Message - From: "BONNIE J KALMBACH" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "chris kalmbach" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Fritz n' Linda Kalmbach" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Kalmbach, Fritz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "lori nitzel" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Martin P. Re: HELP
sorry. i have no experience like this to give you any advice. i would google/search online the flea med you gave Bramble just to see if any reactions like this have occured with other cats that are also on other meds. did you tell the vet you gave the flea stuff? so sorry this is happening. regards Barbara - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Monday, June 06, 2005 9:06 AM Subject: HELP Hi Guys You may recall Bramble (FIV+) went Ataxic on Tuesday and then recovered - he started Omega Interferon on Thursday - and is on 2.5mg daily of Fortekor for a heart murmer. Waiting to hear results still for calicivirus, herpesvirus and FeLV. I was on the phone to the emergency vet last night when I panicked as Bramble was showing symptoms I haven't seen before. They said settle him down and see what he is like in the morning. I did and he settled although he didn;t move again until this morning. I woke up when I heard him scratching frantically on the floor - only it wasn't a scratch it was more like a scared confused going mad scratching so I think he may actually have been having a seizure with all four legs paddling away as he looked confused afterwards. He staggered off into the corner and I put the lamp on - then for about 5 mins he looked in pain and didn't want me to touch him - he was moving his head very slowly then stretching his body out abnormally slowly - his tail in the air then his backside in the air - then he pushed out his back leg and then tried crawling with his front paws on his belly - it was all very very slow and not like normal stretching. This morning he didn't wobble and I gave him his intereron jab as normal - he ate a good breakfast too. Today he is quiet and hasn't moved from the sofa where I put him about 5 hours ago apart from getting up to turn around. He seems a little uncomfy at times about being stroked on the back of his head - has managed to go to sleep. He seems a little mentally disengaged at times and I guess he is in some discomfort all though he hides it well so I don't know exactly if he is or not. He definitely was during last nights episode. He also does seem to have lost more muscle mass too. Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any idea what might be going on - I really don't know what is the right thing to do on this one. The vet said watch him if he has seizures or pain that doesn't stop after 30mins to get him back. Does interferon have any side effects like this??? Also the vet said if he loses use of his back legs and they go cold and stiff and he starts crying then that indicates a blood clot so not to wait around on that - anything is possible. I'm trying so hard to give him the best care possible but I don't know is it right to keep fighting with him or is it fairer to put him to rest - when do you know with these viruses when it is the right time to euthanase your furry friend. I also put stronghold flea drops on him yesterday but I can't see that causing anything like this. Michelle L PS - I am delighted that Sam is found - such a good result.
Re: suggestion
I might also suggest -how to put this?--a warning about vets who claim to be alternative medical vets/holistic etc.there's a vet operating out of the Animal Wellness center here on Long Island who is not very good -in fact, was brought to the area by a pet store around the corner from him to administer to all the sickly puppies they sell from puppy mills. Before I realized this guy's scam, I once tried to tell a young couple in his waiting room who had just bought a puppy that their new purchase had kennel cough and mange! the receptionist started shaking her head at me and went to talk to the vet. when it was my turn to go into waitiing room with a sick kitty, he proceeded to lecture me on how "we" are not there to lecture people on their choices of pets but to help cure them. I argued that they had just bought the darn thing and should go get another. he did proscribe all sorts of holistic meds for a felv+ kitten I had but did not explain the proper way to administer them -that I later learned from reading on holisticat site---and pushed a raw diet but not a word about proper & necessary supplements. after three different visits and witnessing many other such incidents with the puppies from the pet store, i realized this was not a good vet. sure his office bulletin board has glowing testimonials from some patients however the whole picture just did not add up. barbara - Original Message - From: Barb Moermond To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Saturday, June 04, 2005 12:10 AM Subject: Re: suggestion http://www.bemikitties.com/felv/cgi-bin/suite/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?request=display_sub&category_id=113&website=default&session=42a1277e1ec09d81 This is a link to FELV/FIV friendly vets and you can add to it - you have to register, but it's free and it's on Belinda's site. My big lesson from that case and the last emails about Sebastian is that not all vets are experienced as I thought before. Some of them are and some are not. I don't know how many people are in the forum but hopefully we cover half of the states. We might make a list with the qualified vets for each state based on personal experience. In case somebody needs a FeLV vet the name can be pulled from the record. It is helpful because not everybody is available at anytime but the list can be online 24/7. This is just a suggestion. Re: Jersey_question
try posting the question on www.petfinder.org website. they have bulletin boards where you can post about various topics and as I recall there is a health board so maybe if you put in your subject header-looking for great vet in Toledo Ohio--you might get some responses. Sometimes too it just takes a little aggressiveness on the pet owner's part to jumpstart a vet into action. call the vet's office and ask to speak to the vet you saw over the phone and state your case as Tracy suggested. (no need to make an appt to just state your determination.) If the vet says they can't help, then ask them to recommend a specialist. oh, also on petfinder site you can type in your zip code under rescue and shelter search and it'll bring up a list of rescues in your area. you could try calling any cat rescue that has special needs kitties and ask them for a vet reference. good luck. praying hard for Jersey. I think it took me nearly two weeks to pick up Heathen's ashes--he was my first very own dog and we had been through a lot together--I had to PTS just around his 14th birthday and I was devastated. I sort of have a routine with getting the ashes. I take a few days or so to retrieve them, then when I get them home, I don't immediately take them out of the bigger box and put them with the others. The associations are too strong, emotions too charged. The first time I had to have a pet euthanized was at the emergency clinic last Thanksgiving, and befuddled though I was, I knew there was no way I could bring myself to go and pick up ashes from my vet clinic. I would have been a mess in the clinic. I asked to have them delivered to my workplace instead. The vet tech was surprised and questioned my request, but to me it was a no-brainer. The ashes arrived in a plain brown box while I was busy doing other stuff, and it allowed me to delay my grief until I got home. I don't know why vets don't do this as a matter of routine? Is this cat even getting up to use the litter box? sorry Jersey's legs are not improving. regards Barbara - Original Message - From: "Belinda Sauro" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Saturday, May 28, 2005 12:34 AM Subject: Re: Jersey > Hi Stan, >Jersey's potassium is low, he needs some potassium, your vet should > have told you that, I'm sorry but as long as your seeing this vet Jersey > is in serious trouble. >

Re: Jersey
was just about to sign off for the night then saw your question on transfusions. i had 2 different experiences with blood transfusions. one was with a less than year old cat with leukemia and it was two days before xmas. Lenny(the cat) perhaps had a week of quality life with us before we had to let her be put to sleep. the 2nd cat Jelly Roll again perhaps a week or two before he also crashed. I would not have traded that time with them for anything. I am surprised at how cheap your vet says a transfusion is. perhaps because I am in NY where it just seems everything is just so damn expensive. I would make sure the vet types your cat's blood. it must get a matching blood type--I forget if there's a subgroup to cat's blood--I just know my second cat had a very rare blood type. I know others on the list had also had blood transfusions for their cats and can give their opinions. I'd still go for a second opinion if you do not feel this vet is up to date on treatment of leukemia. again good luck and good night, thank you for caring for Jersey. I know how stressful it can be. barbara

usually insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions from what I remember of my research of insurance for pets. did the insurance require your cat have a full exam before approval or did the insurance co. just take your money? if you didn't know jersey had leukemia until after you purchased the insurance then it might be covered. you have to read the fine print on those insurance policies. when you say you chose the vet from the list, I'm guessing you mean the insurance co. gave you a list of vets? I'd follow Jen's very good suggestions as to how to quiz a vet on their feelings towards leukemia. good luck barbara - Original Message - From: stany petrov To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Thursday, May 26, 2005 3:11 PM Subject: Re: Jersey Thanks a lot Barbara. Re: Jersey
glad to hear Jersey is liking the baby food. you can try mixing a little of regular cat food or the science diet a/d into the baby food to gradually wean him off it so he can start getting his full proper nutrients. gradually he'll hopefully go back to regular cat food. it does take time to wean them off the taste sometimes but then that's why cats are catshas the CRF group been any help? can we drop the kittykind subject?
I don't want to sound cold about this but frankly i've been deleting all these messages now. Unless anyone is directly involved with helping resolve this issue with the volunteers and foster homes left in the lurch, why is all this time being spent debating this theoretically? If there is a point, then by all means continue your discussion but shouldn't it be done off this forum? don't mean to sound cranky--just been fighting a hacking cough for weeks now and taking care of my furkids on very little sleep. barbara

it costs over $100 to cremate an animal here on Long Island. I don't know of any vet that will just take a dead animal for no money. I can imagine the same $ charge in NJ. I also cannot even imagine how adrift many of the kittykind volunteers and foster homes feel right now. Hopefully someone in the group is well informed/experienced enough to regroup and get the currently fostered animals permanent homes. (does it sound funny to say that while I volunteer for a rescue group I really never wanted any human contact with them because I felt many were borderline crazy--I would just go pick up the kittens/cats that needed fostering and bring them back when there was openings. Also I knew if I stuck around the shelter, I would get conned into other chores/duties). Also because my dad was in advertising, he always always warned me never ever believe everything I read in print. I did not see any televised broadcasts of the seized animals but I know how newspapers and tv news distorts information for ratings. If I were involved with kittykind I'd be calling those same tv newspeople and asking for airtime to show the healthy foster animals still needing homes. Barbara
Re: Jersey
Hello, I assume your vet ran a complete blood work on Jersey which discovered the virus. How long has your cat not been eating cat food? Ask your vet for the Science Diet a/d cans. Many of the science diet canned foods are too dry-I know my cats will not eat any of it. the a/d cans are very very soft food--perhaps Jersey will like that. You can try putting some on a spoon and smearing it along the side of his mouth so he will be at least taste it and perhaps be tempted. Also baby food jars-beef, chicken, lamb might tempt Jersey to eat. make sure no onions in the ingredients. I agree with Belinda's suggestion to go to the Chronic Renal Failure CRF group for advice. How experienced is your vet with leukemia treatments? Ask if there is a specialist vet in the area? May I ask, what state are you in? perhaps someone on the list can recommend a vet. Good luck taking care of Jersey. He is lucky he found you. regards Barbara - Original Message - From: stany petrov To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Tuesday, May 24, 2005 11:32 AM Subject: Re: Jersey Hi Belinda, Thanks for the information. I was shoked to hear he has a leukimia and could hardly catch what she was explaining me. I am going to talk with her tomorrow afternoon. Now, I give Jersey some yoke and cream cheese. He rejects the diet food from the vet. He likes margarine but I use that only to give him some vitamins. I cannot believe that disease is so spread in the USA. Re: Need prayers and advice for Ginger
going thru my cat care books. one mentions Biodent-a good general nutritional supplement to benefit the mouth.a human product but vet can order. contains bone meal, carrot powder, spleen and other nutrients that create a healthier chemisty in tissue of mouth. takes time to work. for inflamed gums, the topical application of an herbal combinatin called Echinacea-goldenseal supreme by gaia herbs-saurate a Q tip with the liquid and run along gum line once a day or if condition severe, twice a day. (tho as I recall, echinacea made my cats foam at mouth...the taste.) anitra frzier mentions an herbal remedy to soothe and heal sore and bleeding gums--add 1/4 teaspooon salt to 1/2 cup strong lukewarm calendula and pat on gums with a cotton ball. herbal remedies are usualy taken 3-4 times a day, one to two teaspoons of tea for a cat, 1/2 t. for a kitten. another book mentions calendula for general gum care-purchase a bottle of the mother tincture-put 6 drops in 1 oz of distilled water --if gums are infected already, use a cotton swab padded with extra cotton(from a cotton ball)so tht it soaks up the liquid. (brushing would only irritate gums more). cover both inside and outside of the gums(I guess they mean both sides of the teeth)with the calendula. hope some of this helps. calendula is usually easy to find in a good health food store. interesting footnotes that the vets seem to feel they see teeth problems more in certain breeds and colors. redheaded cats have more gingivitis than other cats. purebreds more at risk-tho maine coons have less problems than abyssinians and persians. My Mr. Bean is red and he ws the first one to exhibit the gum and tooth problems. barbara - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Saturday, May 07, 2005 12:19 PM Subject: Re: Need prayers and advice for Ginger > I am taking her to an internist on Monday, and also plan to call Monday > morning to the veterinary dentist office near here to get her an emergency > appointment if necessary. mr. bean (my postiive who has since turned negative) started terrible drooling(and then slurping up the spittle or even more fun, shaking his head and spraying me) and could not eat even his canned food. tookhim to vet and he had terribly inflamed gums. the meds didn't help so he started pulling teeth. that's when i went online and started researching and found out about stomatitis and leukemia. told the vet test him and sure enough, he ws postiive. the teeth pulling helped along with the med antirobe aquadrops-liquid clindamycin hydrochloride. i also started him on megaC plus and vit e, a and d, my chinese alt. med vet had him on immune booster pills and oh heck i forget what the white powder stuff was called but i got it from glyconutrients co. online when discovered it much cheaper there. I am so sorry you are having so much stress now worrying about all your beloved animals. wish I was closer so could help somehow. the teeth problem could also be making her nauseous which might account for lack of appetite. did you look thru the www.holisticat.com archives for any help? regards Barbara > > I am hoping this all just has to do with her mouth and can be resolved, but I > really am worried. > **Has anyone had a cat with dental disease completely stop eating and do the > lip licking thing when you try to give food???*** > > Thanks, > Michelle >

i had sent my well wishes before you posted the complete story. it does sound like her teeth and gums are the problem and the gingivitis could also be causing stomatitis. is she drooling? did you try yogurt? and I agree with Barb--my cats will jump on whoever has just returned from the vet or clinic because of the strange smells. sending more healing thoughts for Ginger. barbara - Original Message - From: Barb Moermond To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Friday, May 06, 2005 4:47 PM Subject: Re: Need prayers and advice for Ginger It sounds like her teeth and gums are the things that need fixing, at least short-term. Her mouth might just be too painful for her to deal with it. Lucy probably attacked her because she smelled like the emergency clinic- my boys have done that to each other on the few occasions they've gone separately. I would definitely keep an eye on the lump, but I think her mouth is the problem at the moment. Keeping your family in our thoughts.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ginger, my 6 year old positive, did not seem to want to eat last night and this morning at 6 am licked her lips when I gave her baby food and only ate a few licks-- she would normally go crazy for it. I took her in to the emergency room. Her blood work was all normal except her protein was a little high. Her xrays were normal except there was a little something showing where the lymph node in the chest is. The radiologist said it is either fat, which frequently collects there and Ginger is fat, or the beginnings of an enlarged lymph node there which could indicate lymphoma. Her gums are super-inflamed and her teeth in terrible shape. They gave me antibiotics for her mouth, gave her Pepcid before we left, and said to give her fluids. They chipped some of the stuff off her teeth. She was very stressed while there.Upon coming home she ate a jar of baby food. My cat Lucy then started viciously attacking her-- which she has never done, and Ginger has been hiding from her. I gave her a vial of feline interferon for the first time, have an ultrasound scheduled for Monday if she does not get better, and am praying. I tried to give her fluids and she turned into a wildebeast-- I have given many cats fluids in my life, and Gray was helping, and we could not get more than 10 ml or so into her. I tried giving her more food, including more baby food, and she would not eat it. Actually, she tried a few licks of baby food and then started moving her mouth and throat funny like it was stuck in her mouth or throat, which of course is impossible with baby food, and then she walked away. She played with me a little, but is not herself at all. She does not have diarrhea. She is a little dehydrated, which I guess I will try to fix by getting more baby food in her since I can not get fluids into her.If anyone thinks this sounds familiar and has any idea what is going on, please tell me. I hope it is not lymphoma, and to tell the truth it seems odd to me that beginning stages of lymphoma in the chest would make her not want to eat. Re: False Positive
She might have tested postive because she had been exposed to Smeagol(sharing litter boxes, mutual cleaning) but now has shed the virus. be sure to read all the info and links on the leukemia website. It can be very scary to face but with information you will feel more confident. I would think the vet would wait 3 months before retesting. Which test did the vet give her? Was Moxie a litter mate to Smeagol? I am so sorry you lost him. We all here on this list know how crappy this virus is and have faced losses of our furkids also. Try to take some comfort that Smeagol is now pain free and now running and playing beyond the Rainbow bridge. I would suggest you go thru the archives for info on supplements and vitamins for Moxie--I have a mixed household-only one postive now and 6 negatives. One of my other cats was a positive but after several years of MegaPlus vitamin C, vit E and feeding him a better quality diet of canned food like Wellness, Eagle brand holistic, Petguard NOT grocery store stuff, he tested negative. surprised the heck out of my vet. I would also suggest you go to the www.holisticat.com website and scroll thru their archives for info. Welcome to the group--you will find very supportive people. it might just be quiet during this mother's day weekend but I am sure others will email you. I am so sorry your Akira is not doing well. My cats never let the vet techs feed them if they feeling even a little bit poorly. are you allowed to go in and visit? Just remember to breathe. I know -we all know--how cruel and unfair this virus can be---our furfriends can be doing fine and then we blink and they are sick. pulling for Akira to perk up. Remember she loves you. Barbara

Re: I need ideas on best brand of carrier for feral
will someone explain to me why my two half ferals will let me pet them at 6 am when they wake me up in the morning but run if I so much as peek in the same room they're in any other time? AND those rotten furkids. my son's friend came for a visit from college-never saw her in their lives and the female cat climbed up on her lap for pets and a nap. argghhh! they also love my friend who has their two siblings since they were 20 wks old(now 6 yrs old). - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Wednesday, May 04, 2005 4:12 PM Subject: Re: I need ideas on best brand of carrier for feral In a message dated 5/4/2005 3:43:01 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: one of my favorite warped thingsto do is sneak up on her and pet her because i KNOW it's largelyan act. her name, appropriately enough, is sybil. exactly! I will bring up the carrier for an upcoming vet visit, leave it open on teh table adn everybody wants to get in there. everytime I see one of these subject headers my heart breaks for the human and their loss--reminding me that yet another sweet fur creature has lost her/his battle to this absolutely friggin crappy virus. I've had to go offmail from the list because just too many other problems right now in my life---but also because I just can't take the heartbreak right now but I realize that is very selfish because everyone here responded when I wrote of losing Jelly Roll last nov. I am so sorry, Tad-you lost this precious little friend. I'm sorry if you felt no one cared--we do--maybe too much and sometimes the losses that just keep adding up remind us too much of our loved ones that have gone to the bridge. the only thing that keeps me going is the support of this group and knowing I'm not alone-just as I'm not alone with fighting cancer now with my last dog--I wish you peace in the future and that one day the hurt will lessen some over this loss. Keep loving your animals-keep saving them--stay as wonderful as you are to fight in this battle and thank god you were granted the genes to care for animals and not turn away as so many others do-saying, oh they're just cats... they are just cats just wonderful glorious beautiful creatures who found us to love them and for whatever amount of time we are granted to share with them on this realm, we have to revel in that joy. take care, Barbara

Even if the three of us were in varying states of displeasure about being awake and moving at this hour on a weekend, it was a perfect day for transporting animals. Blaidd was a smoldering presence in the seat next to me, still understandably upset that we'd had to leave Piper at home and likely to be for the rest of the day, as well as still in the dangerous condition of not having had any Coke since waking; Caer was still giggly and tired in the back seat from lack of sleep, though trying not to let it show by making harmless, random comments to which neither person in the front seat was really responding. And me? I wasn't really caring either way at that point - all I was concentrating on was getting to the meeting point on time, which doesn't sound like such a difficult task unless you know me and the way that for some reason logic warps around me. I can start out thirty minutesearly and still be ten minutes late. A unique talent, I guess. Approximately an hour later, we had met our charges for the day, exchanged quite a bit of interaction with the handing off driver who also happened to be the coordinator of this run, gassed up Spud (the rescue mobile - a '93 Oldsmobile; anyone see the difficulty yet?), gotten Blaidd some Coke, watered all three dogs, exchanged parting hugs and wishes with our contact, and settled everyone in the car. The Golden brothers quickly appropriated the back seat, one stretching across the entirety of it with his head in Caer's lap, the other still too excited about new surroundings and new people to even care or really notice that he was thereby forced to stand up; the Pointer occupied the space Piper normally would, first standing then sitting and eventually laying on the bench seat between myself and Blaidd in the front. We rolled down the windows, cranked the AC, and departed the service station for the three hour drive ahead of us in much better spirits. After all - everyonefit, and that's all we could really ask or hope for. I merged onto the highway, and settled into a good driving speed. The mood in the car was high - we'd just witnessed a three-legged, skin and bones beagle being delivered into the hands of his new foster or adoptive home (I think adoptive, though that wasn't made abundantly clear), and the skeleton of a pointer next to us was going to have a chance at life outside the Animal Control shelter where none of the animals were fed and barely watered as they simply waited for their turn to die. I knew we were behind, but it was well worth it; I was calculating how late we would be by the time we got to our own drop off point, and how many miles we would have on the tank before needing to fill up again, when I glanced up to the road and felt my heart sink. I'd seen the body lying on the side of the road... the dog lover in me immediately whispered beagle... just as the logic told me dead... I felt the familiar numbness lock up my chest as happens every time I see an animal on theside of the road, but magnified as the question was begged What were you doing out here? of an obvious pet lying by a busy four lane highway, 20 minutes by car from any of the nearest cities or houses that could be seen... Before I could notice the other critical detail I heard Blaidd beside me, voice tense: "That was Debbie... Stop. Stop... it's Debbie." My numb heart sank lower, and I hit the brakes. We backed down the shoulder of the highway, I surprisingly not even flinching at how close and how fast the cars that didn't move over for us shuddered past; all that mattered was getting closer to that red Chevy pulled over off the highway, i

There are people on this list who have had FeLV+ cats live to over 10 years old. It is rare but it does happen. I have one whose age I don't want to say because I am superstitious and do not want to jinx her, but she is probably older than you are thinking Tom will live to be. Also, cats do not die of FeLV. FeLV is like HIV-- it is a virus that diminishes the immune system and makes the cat more vulnerable to other conditions like lymphoma and URI's and certain kinds of anemia. So you have no idea how he will die when he dies, or when that will be. As far as your negatives go, if you keep them separated they are safe. I have a negative and 4 positives and keep them in separate areas. The current wisdom on FeLV is that it does not survive longer than a few moments in the air, and that cats have to share water, litter, and food for a while before catching it from each other (before they manage to come into contact with virus before it has died in air, which is more likely to happen in a wet substance) or fight. Most people on this list even mix positives and negatives, just making sure the negatives get the FeLV vaccine every year. I do not do that because I feel like it is taking a chance, but even that is just a small chance and there seems to have been very little disease spread that way. So if you keep them separate, it should be fine. If they are already in close contact and have been for a while, chances are that those who would contract it already have. Finally, I learned from someone recently that there is a cat sanctuary in Arizona that is exclusively for FeLV+ cats. I never tried to find it, but I assume you can find it on the web if you look. If you can't, I would contact Marley's Fund, which is such a group in NC and has a web page, and ask them if they know of it. Or contact Best Friends in Utah and ask them if they know about it or of anywhere else in the southwest that you can find him a home, if you are not willing to keep him. OT:now my other dog has cancer!
Hi You all will stay in my thoughts and your furbabies in my prayers but right now I have to go to no mail and concentrate on my dog Frasier. I took him in for heartworm testing and the vet noticed a small growth on his side. the bad news is mast cell tumor the good news is it is not on a bone. we are awaiting blood work results before operating. he believes he will be able to get "deep margins" around the tumor so it will not spread. Frasier is 11-12-13-who knows exactly-he was a pound rescue who was my dog Maddy's best friend for a decade before she passed last summer from her cancer. she was cancer free for 8 yrs after a mast cell tumor on a bone in her back leg. i am so mad. I give him supplements, premium food yet too many morons here on Long Island get those hideous chemicals on their lawns so the stupid things will look green. oh well, off to join the caninecancer group again. damn. Good luck to you all and please pet your kitties for me.hopefully I will be back soon if only to lurk. so far clancy my only positive left has been fine--knock on wood! Wish you all many years with your furgangs. regards Barbara
Re: Food for FeLV plus Urine Crystals, Brissle Update
i have 6 of my cats on MegaC plus(powder) to prevent struvite crystals(2 are felv+) and one that is negative however had oxalate crystals -on potassium citrate. all get 200 iu Vit E--two eat their capsules in those pill pockets, the others I have to puncture the gelcap and squeeze on their food.the vit C powder I just mix in their canned food. I also feed canned food with no fish products(amazing how that stuff sneaks into alot of cans marked chicken and beef!) and no dry(okay I've been cheating and giving them like ten pieces of dry at night, each but not every night) the 3 that had blockages would not touch the canned s/d and I didn't want to feed them dry s/d after reading the info on www.holisticat.com website. barbara - Original Message - From: Melbeach To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Friday, April 01, 2005 3:30 PM Subject: Re: Food for FeLV plus Urine Crystals, Brissle Update Kathy, Hill's is actually the same thing as Science Diet. Don't know if it has any byproducts though. Kathy Melbeach <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Well I'm at the end of my bag of Science Diet CD/S. So it's time to buy more food. Here's my dilemma. Brissle is my FeLV+ female. Her FeLV- brother Squermie has urine crystal issues. They are both 8 years old. Squermie was about 2 when he had his urine crystals episode. It was really bad. He had to stay at the vet twice with a catheter inserted, once for an entire week. They said if he had another incident, they would have to "make him a girl". Apparently, girls have wider tubes and don’t have these problems. Up until Squermie's incident, we were feeding them Max Cat. I don't remember which type. But I was warned about byproducts and the Max Cat said it had no byproducts. So we used it and paid dearly. After the incident, they have both been eating only Science Diet CD/S. That was all 6 years ago and Squermie hasn't had another incident since. So I really don't want to tamper with success. But now I'm hearing more about how bad Science Diet is with byproducts. Is there a no-byproduct dry food that's also especially made for urine crystals? I say "especially made for urine crystals" instead of "low-magnesium" because I'm not sure if low-magnesium is the only thing that makes Science Diet CD/S so special. I remember asking my last vet if I could just buy one of the low-magnesium foods at the pet store. But he said absolutely no. Only Science Diet CD/S. I want to avoid feeding them both different foods. For one, it's s much easier to just keep a bowl of food down and forget about it. That's just always how it's been done with them. Also, if I give them different food, Squermie will surely get jealous and start picking on Brissle. I've considered giving Squermie back to the ex. But if I did that, Brissle would miss him. He can be an ogre at times. But he's gotten much better with age. I think weighing everything out, it would be better to keep him. I just have to be real fair about everything. Brissle has been doing great. We finished the VO injections about 2 weeks ago. She's almost back to her normal weight! She has plenty of energy. It's looking real good! I'll be taking Brissle to the vet next week for blood tests. One month ago, when this all started, her HCT was 9.7%. The pink in her nose makes a good visual indicator of HCT. It's still pretty light. Nowhere near as dark pink as Squermie's. But on the day I brought her to the vet, her nose was completely gray! I really don't remember how dark her nose was originally. I would highly recommend making a mental note or taking a picture of the pinkness of all your cat's noses, especially the healthy ones, so you have something to gauge by. Thanks for listening! -Kyle
Re: Need help with treatment options for FELV+ kitty and infections
thank you for taking TeeCee in when his uselesss owners abandoned him. Leash trained yet--he really sounds like a great sweetheart. I am so sorry he is not doing well. dont' be afraid to ask your vet for referral to specialist vets. (i've gone thru 3 vets and 6 different animals passing away from various illnesses and I finally had to ask each vet to refer me and then their attitude was like oh yeah there are specialists around here). have they done a blood work on him to see if he's anemic or catch any other underlying problems? regards barbara - Original Message - From: "Stephanie E Caldwell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Thursday, March 31, 2005 4:47 PM Subject: Need help with treatment options for FELV+ kitty and infections > I need some ideas for a kitty that adopted me. Re: Pill Pockets for giving Meds.
i have two who absolutely cannot wait for their vitamins every morning in those darn things. when any of the others need meds, i have to tear up one pill pocket for them to snack on and then hide the one with the pill in their wet food. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. go figure... barbara
