RE: pungent urine

2007-04-14 Thread Melissa Lind
He was neutered April 3rd. I now realize that it was just his hormones
coming out. And I'm happy to report that there is no more nasty smell. His
poo is now more odorous than his piddles, so it's very tolerable now. Also,
I was able to switch him over to crystals quite easily by sprinkling his
used clay litter over the top. Now everything dries out much faster and the
smell is contained. He has a giant litter box (a plastic tote); he doesn't
spray or mark; all-in-all we are very happy! I'm not sure if you read this
on my other posts, but he's been accepted to Best Friends in Utah for after
May 1st, but I can't take him there until after July 1st (pending his second
IFA test), so it's kind of up in the air about his future there. Best,
Melissa

That's good news Melissa. As far as I'm concerned, no good news is
trivial, we need as much of it as we can get! There is nothing like the
pungent aroma of intact Tom cat! Before I could my FIV boy Starman
neutered, I had to take him back and forth to a long-distant vet several
times. He was terrified of being in the car and he'd immediately let go
with his fragrance the minute I put him in the carrier. He'd scream his
head off the whole way and I'd do my best to get him to hear me
consoling him with my head out the window. Not at all pleasant! Tell
your husband well done for getting through Cassidy's hormone adjustment
without resorting to violence.

Re: pungent urine

2007-04-10 Thread Melissa Lind
Phaewryn, you have such useful advice! My screen is in no danger of falling
out-unfortunately mine are so old that they have no fire safety mechanisms!
Well, our house really isn't that old, but it was built cheaply in the early
80s. The people didn't care much for quick escapes! Someday I'll have to
replace them anyway, but for now I'll probably use the lattice-work idea
just because although chicken wire would work, this window faces the
street-not a fancy neighborhood, but lots of gossips.

By the way, I like your horse barn idea! Can we use the "manure" as
fertilizer :-) Ha! Ha! My husband deals with that sort of fertilizer and
agriculture (spreading it on fields)-people spend millions on just buying
the stuff. Only wish I could sell cat waste for the same.we'd all be rich!

Melissa

Re: pungent urine

2007-04-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If you just prop lattice up against the screen frame, be aware that some
screens will actually pop out if pushed on too hard (many are designed to so
to make escaping fire easier). Be sure yours are nice and secure before you
trust it too much. Definitely don't just lean it against the screen itself
and trust it, if he tries at all, it will pop the whole screen right out of
it's frame, and out goes screen, lattice, cat, and all. If you have deep
window sills/frames, another pre-made option is a baby gate, just be sure
it's got holes small enough to hold in a cat.

Oh, and yes, tom cat pee stinks to high heaven. It should be MUCH better in
another week. Sometimes the actual CAT reeks after a neuter, and requires a
post-neuter bath. Whitey had to have one, he was icky! My vet says after one
week, it's OK to bathe the cat (you don't want to do it before then since
the neuter leaves an open wound and bath water can carry nasty gak into it).

I usually totally dislike clumping litters, but that would probably help a
lot, if you could remove the PEE from the box regularly by scooping. Just be
sure it doesn't stick to his neuter sore. I like the Feline Fresh brand
scoopable, but other good, safe brands are World's Best cat Litter, and
SWheat Scoop.

He may be dehydrated, which will make the urine more concentrated. Feeding
better (no corn or by-products) food will also help with the smell, but it
will take at least a week to smell any difference if it's food related.

That brings an idea to mind for my "if I ever hit the lottery" cat sanctuary. I
think
I will make one "litter room", and have it with a big overhead door on one whole
wall, facing outside, then, I'll fill it with horse stall shavings, and when
it's
nasty (probably ever other or every 3 days - maybe once a week if I don't have
a lot
of cats), I will just lock the cats out, open the overhead door, and use my
front-end
loader (or bobcat) to strip it out, make a manure pile (again, horse facility
type of
management) out in the back 40 somewhere, bring in the hose, and spray it out
(I'll
make it all washable, with a concrete floor that grades to the outside wall),
turn on
a big fan to dry it, and then add new shavings, close the outside door, go in
and
unlock the cat doors so they can access it again, and be done with it.

Just a bit of info.
We have 14 cats and we have had real good luck using either Arm & Hammer Scoopable Litter or Tidy Cat Scoopable (the original kind). The only time there is odor is if someone doesn't cover. For accidents we use Nature's Miracles. It works wonders as long as you use it first. Don't try to clean and then try it.
We have 4 litter boxes in a walk in closet area (uncovered). One in our utility room, 1 in the bathroom (covered), and one in our bedroom (covered). They are the extra large litter boxes, except for one.  I scoop all boxes in the morning and my husband does it around 4:30 p.m. We add fresh litter as needed. It works quite well actually.

I always buy those storage totes after I discovered that my Bandit had a tendency to not realize how big he was—piddled off the side a lot before the storage totes were bought. Candles seems to work a little—it’s a least tolerable in here for me to get some work done! Cassidy is now snuggled up on my lap—he’s finally learning not to use his claw on me so much!

You know Melissa, you got me thinking when you mentioned Cassidy staring
out the window like that. I wonder if there is a cat coming around that
he can see out the window. Is he hitting the litterbox, or is he
spraying the walls with his perfume? One of my sister's friends was
threatening to throw her declawed cat outside because she wasn't using
her box. After a little discussion I learned that there was a cat coming
around outside and her inside high strung kitty was terrified. I had her
shut the blinds on that side of the house, add a couple more litterboxes
and give her little girl extra attention. Sure enough, her kitty calmed
down and started using her box again.

The 18 gallon ones are easy to change out. I just use a skill saw to cut
the u-opening. My cats have never been concerned about how neat it is.
Evaluate the jumping ability of your cats to decide how high up the box you
need to go. Dixie is so athletic that I haven't cut a hole for her yet.
My mother used to put a very heavy drum liner in her box then put the litter
in it. She thought it made the box easier to clean. An idea. I don't use
one.

An after thought: If you go this route consider leaving the RM boxes open
and in the sun for a couple of days if they smell like plastic (depends on
how the store kept them). The odor can be a real turnoff for cats (and
people).

the chips. Also consider using a Rubbermaid or knock off storage box for
his litter box (no lid please). I use the 18 gallon or larger ones and
cut
a u-shaped hole for the cat to walk in. More room, less concentration
and
high walls for any difficulties hitting the litter. I love them. I
started
using them when Ebony was about 18 years old and was having trouble
"getting

down."

Try probiotics (health food store or order Fastrack). Also have him
checked

for a UTI. This is not natural.

Cassidy, my new FeLV+, has very aromatic pee! I had to use clay litter
because he didn't understand the crystals, but even so, I think when I
get
him switched to crystals, it will still be unbearable. Baking soda does
not
cover this smell. He's been neutered, and he's not marking, it's just out
of

his litter box. Is there anything I can feed him? Any product that could
help? I couldn't even sleep last night because our house is unreasonably
stinky! I love this guy, but I'm going to be embarrassed to let anyone
over!

Even my husband, who works around manure every day, was sickened by the
smell!

Melissa,

About how old is Cassidy? I know you just had him neuterd - maybe the vet
accidentally released some male "tom-cat" hormones during the neutering.
Tom-cat urine oder is BEYOND strong!! And it can take about 4 weeks for
the hormones to clear after surgery. Give your vet a call and let him
know what it smell like. It could just be a wait for the levels to drop
solution.

Marylyn,

What do you cut them with?

I went to a rescuer's house that had HUGE long skinny rectangular
rubbermaid type things as litter boxes. I think the only problem
would be changing them out completely as they probably held several
hundred pounds of litter each.

I need to do something about my situation though.

Not nearly enough litterboxes for all my cats, and if I had the
recommended 1 litterbox per cat + 1 I'd have to have a whole room with
nothing but litterboxes in it.

I would take him to the vet. It may be a urinary tract infection.
