Poor Rusty. Do they have him back on insulin now, or is that what the money is needed for? If he is laying around and sleeping all the time, and not eating, but drinking a lot, then he has high blood glucose, and needs to be injected with insulin. If he seems "spacey" or begins to have seizures or acts like he is having neurological impairment, then he may be hypoglycemic (meaning he got too much insulin for the amount of food he's eating), and would need to be put on a glucose drip IV. It's especially important for him to eat if he is getting his insulin injections, if he's NOT getting the injections, then his not eating may actually be helping him... the carbs in food turn into blood glucose, and that's bad for diabetics. If he's not getting his injections, then I highly recommend a very low carb cat food, one with NO grains is best, such as Innova Evo, OR even better, raw meat only. Meat has almost no carbs by itself. Normal grocery store cat foods are VERY VERY bad for diabetic cats (corn is horrible with it's high carbs), and I know that with the huge numbers down there, you guys are probably having to buy the cheapest stuff you can find. Try to get the cheapest ground beef or the chicken legs and thighs.. a pound will last a few feedings for one cat, and it isn't very much more expensive than cheap cat food.PhaewrynPLEASE Adopt a cat from Little Cheetah Cat Rescue!!!http://ucat.us/adopt.html DONATE: We could really use a power saw (for construction), a digital camera (for pictures) and HOMES for CATS!
Re: Thank you: Emergency aid for vet bills...
It's a very sad situation, I'd say I wish I were closer so I could help... but heck, I'm GLAD I'm not down there this time of year, with the heat index at over 100 degrees, and all the violence down south. Are they trying to get him adopted, or are they holding him to try to reunite with his owner? If he's up for adoption (or rescue by a more financially well off rescue), If you can send me his description, his location (what part of MS), and if you can get one, a picture, I'll add him to my website under the diabetic cats in need section... I can also crosspost his info, in hopes that others may help with his vet bills. He's considered special needs, and that's what my site specializes in. Thank you: Emergency aid for vet bills...
Thank you all I sent all the links on. There are a handful of volunteers in the New Orleans area and on the MS coast who try very hard to feed/water strays that they know were previously owned. As people come back, they are amazed to find their cats alive! Every day, the feeders try to look trap cats that escaped and whose owners are looking for. Just yesterday they got one cat that everyone had thought had died! The stray population is really getting pretty overwhelmingkitten season, and all Anyway, vetting is a big problem and most of the feeders, particularly in MS, take that on their own so any possible help is always helpful As for the cat in questionwell, poor Rusty was not doing well late last night. He wasnt eating and though he seemed fairly comfortable and purring away, we know that for a diabetic cat, not eating is not good Chris [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, July 23, 2006 10:51 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: Emergency aid for vet bills...
