Bob has anyone done a review on the rfs3600 yet? Or any first hand
experience using it?

I have yet to test this. I do have some uncut rolls and a real job that
interferes with my scanning time.

As soon as I figure this out, I will post it.

Is it too large to print?

I read an inquiry some time back asking if it could accept an uncut
roll of 37 frames (spec'd for 36). Can you tell from the pdf or ??

Re: Kodak RFS 3600 (was: filmscanners: Side Step, Have a question)

2000-11-16 Thread Trozzo

I had one. I sent it back for the SS4000. I may have had a bad unit, but
it crashed my Mac G3 every third time I tried to acquire the scanner's
software from within Photoshop. It seems to be memory hungry. My unit
sounded like a jack hammer when it scanned. It could have had an
internal problem. Non the less the scans where noisy--(grain). The
colors where vivid but blotchy. I could not get a good scan using the
different CMSs. It only worked well on the default settings. I have used
a leafscan 35, a polariod sprintscan 35, and an RFS 2035. I felt that
the scans from the 3600 left something lacking--detail. The edges of
objects in the scan seemed rough and blended together to much when you
zoom in on the image. However I was able to make some nice Epson 1200
prints from the scans. I think Kodak has some bugs to iron out with the
3600.

I have just set up the SS4000. I can't wait to compare the two.

2000-11-16 Thread Dan Kimble

Bob,
the way I found to handle 37 or more
frames is to do the first 36 frames and
then do the others, it is not really a
problem. The RFS 3600 leaves the
filmstrip on the last frame scanned so
you can just restart from there. I
mentioned scanning more than 36 frames
to Kodak and I was told that there would
be another software and firmware version
released in a few weeks. I don't know if
that statement implies that a change in
this area is coming or not.

There are a few articles about this scanner in scanner
news group. Most people tried it were dissapointed
because of its scanning speed (almost 4 mins/slide
???). One person even said it pull out less shadow
detail than his old polaroid 35+.

Check that group out.

The articles were on the "usenet" alt.comp.periphs.scanner
You can access the Usenet through your browser news function. I you have not
done so already you will need to get the name of your ISP's news server. It
is usually news.ispname.com but sometimes can be different. Your ISP should
have a FAQ for accessing Usenet news groups. There are literally thousands
of news groups

I was talking about the usenet newsgroup for scanners
(comp.periphs.scanners) It's a world wide forum about
scanners and scanning softwares. You can get to it by
www.dejanews.com or some other news server.

Some members here are also active in that forum such
as Ed. Hamrick etc.

Please let me know what you think about
the noise generated by the SS4000. I'm
curious because I returned a SS4000
because I felt it was noisy and did not
sound good mechanically. I'm happier
with the RFS 3600

However, be warned that it is mostly about flatbed scanners.
