Re: [Finale] Chord Symbol Question
Dear Jacki, It's been a while since I used Finale's chord suffix editor, since I use a special chord font, but here's what I think will work: Click on the note to which you want to attach the chord (with the chord tool and "manual input" selected). A window will open with a place to select the root of the chord. To the right of that is a toggle that says "Show/Hide Advanced." Select "show advanced" and then select an existing chord suffix from the available library of chords. There will be a "select" place near the bottom of that window which will bring up the library. Pick one which matches as closely as possible the one you want to create. It doesn't need to be exact, because you're going to change it anyway. You're really going to use it to learn how to make your own suffixes - or customize Finale's. When you have selected one, there'll be a place to select "duplicate." Do this so that you are working with a copy of the original, and the original will remain untouched, in case you need it later. Then select the duplicate and find the "edit" button. Select that, and now you will be in the window that allows selection and positioning of chord suffix elements. A little playing with that should make it clear how to add and remove elements and position them vertically and horizontally. Try this, and if you have trouble after you've gotten this far, write again, and I'll continue to help, but this should become clear after a little playing with it. You will have to go into the chord suffix library and set it up. It's a bit tedious and convoluted in Finale, but the good news is, you only have to do it once. Just save your library when finished. If the proprietor of the copy shop cannot provide you the name, check with a local print shop they can probably do so, if they cannot, ask who they purchase their paper from, and you should be able to find out there. Also, ask the copy shop what the largest size paper they can handle. It may be that they can only handle 11 x 17, but if their equipment is capable of larger sizes, I'd almost guarantee that their supplier can provide larger sizes of paper (though not necessarily in every color available in 11 x 17) and can cut it to a specified size. 22 x 34 inch paper is not difficult to get, and for a small fee, you can get a ream cut into two reams of 9-3/4 x 25, or 19-1/2 s 12-1/2. You won't get it done, though, for what you can get an 11 x 17 copy at the local copyshop. ns ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

[Finale] Another Chord Question
I knew I'd have another question as soon as I sent the last note! It's been 23 years since I took music theory in college, and though I remember a lot, this song interpretation is really challenging my old brain here!! What I did is have the piano player play the song into a midi file so I could interpret the chords he's playing and notate the song for the composer (the piano player plays by ear only)... What is the "rule of thumb" on when you call a chord a 9th, 11th, or 13th? I remember something about the 7th needing to be present or otherwise you'd call it a 6th instead of 13th or an "add2" instead of a 9th...?? This particular chord definitely has the "dominant" feel/ sound to it and is used in that way as it leads to the tonic. The song is in Cm. This chord I'm trying to define is: G - F - C - Eb - G - Bb Would this be a Gm13? Or what?!! Thanks a bunch! [Finale] How big is exactly too big?
I've done some testing with 8.5 X 11.0 paper and A4 paper for creating booklets. The music just seems awfully crampt at those sizes of paper. Especially when you have two systems on a page. I know there are different sizes for different tasks, and there is a reason why Barenreiter has their editions in such a big format: they're making scholarly library editons. They're also very legible to read, unlike what my results are. I''m curious if any members on the list do projects were you print in such large formats as these. Barenreiter uses paper that's 12.5 inches by 9.750 wide. Unfortunately in the US, most copy shops only have 11 X 17 inch paper, which rules out doing a bi-fold. Attached PS/PDF, EPS/PDF. Hi Dennis ( the other one :-) ), I think what is happening here is that you created your postscript listing/eps while you had the TrueType version of Maestro installed. Did you remove the TrueType version before or after you compiled the listing? If after, can you try uninstalling the TrueType version, then installing the PS version - then open up Finale, compile the postscript version and distill it. A few experiments here seem to show that if you compile the postscript listing with the TrueType font installed, it will correctly reference either the TrueType or PS version later on, depending upon which one is installed on your system (although the character mappings seem to be a bit off with the PS version, there is a problem with noteheads). However, if you compile it with the PS version installed, it will incorrectly reference either version. I suspect the problem is that the PS listing is mangling the PS font name. [Finale] Clearing the "Recent Files" List

RE: [Finale] Drum kit wizard file notation and sounds
Actually, YES it does use things in your default file. Peter doesn't mention what version of Finale he's using, but the last few can grab percussion maps from the default file and apply them to percussion staves. There are two forms of mapping via the wizard. The first is a single percussion instrument that uses a single sound in MIDI percussion, like Finger Cymbals. It's entry in instrument.txt looks like this: [INS:Finger Cymbals] Name= Finger Cymbals Abbr= F. Cym. useKeySigs = 0 Transposition = 0 StaffType = single Clef= altpercussion Patch = PercMap = 55 PercMap is where you define the percussion map. 55 is not a particular percussion map, but rather a MIDI note number. Finale automatically creates a percussion map that maps the finger cymbal sound to the line in a single line percussion staff. Any instruments that you setup in the score this way are collected into a single percussion map called "Wizard Created Percussion map" or something of the like. The second type of percussion map mapping in Finale takes a percussion map already available in the default file and applies it: [INS:Cymbals] Name= Cymbals Abbr= Cym. useKeySigs = 0 Transposition = 0 StaffType = percussion Clef= altpercussion Patch = PercMap = Basic Orch Percussion GPO Finale Edition We map them to ones in our default file by default (department of redundancy department ), but you can make adjustments to your default file/instrument.txt file that will use any percussion map you would like. The important thing to remember is that the name in the PercMap = parameter must match the name of the percussion map in the default file identically. Trailing spaces may cause a problem. One other little tidbit about percussion in Finale (2k5+). There's a second "bank" of percussion sounds in the soundfont that we ship. It's mostly marching percussion instruments, all you need to do is specify patch 2 if you want Finale to use those sounds for playback. If you have no percussion maps defined in your default file, the wizard won't know what to use to create the percussion staves, so it will be as if the feature doesn't exist. Well, that is the question. I haven't checked recently, but the last time I tried the command print booklet ? did not work - it gives you a print dialog, but doesn't seem to print booklets.
