Re: [Finale] erratic word extensions
Word extensions in Finale are horribly erratic. Kind of following the pattern of the entire application IYAM. Whether I use manual or smart, they never have worked. I'm on FinMac 2k7 BTW. Any ideas on how I could get these word extensions to show up? I get some unusual behaviour with word extensions sometimes, too. What I do to force an extension over a system break (also after a second ending) is the same thing I used to do before smart extensions and TG Tools. I enter an option-space as a lyric on the syllable starting the new system (PC users will need to know the alt code for the non-breaking space character). This lyric will have it's own word extension that I can edit manually. I will need to nudge this character a bit to the left so the word extension starts at the left boundary of the note. Yup, it's a kludge. But I only have to do it a couple of times per choral arrangement now, whereas I used to do it on almost EVERY system break. Marilyn Are you ABSOLUTELY certain that they are really uncompressed? That would be my first bet. My second bet is that Finale is choking on your files in error. Importing them into a different image editor and re-saving might clean them up so Finale feels comfortable with them. Have you been in contact with tech support about this? I have basically given up on graphics because of the problems importing, positioning and printing them to PDF or EPS. They should know in detail what the problem is. Lean on them to come up with a solution, because if the tech guys are wasting a lot of time dealing with a bug, they will be more likely to fix it later. And who knows, they might even have a solution! Re: [Finale] error message on TIFF insert-- any way to work around?
MS Photo Editor won't open bitmapped pictures (on my XP system, at least). Save the file from bmp to jpg first (try something other than Irfanview and see whether yo get better results), and then use MS Photo Editor to save it as tif. before saving, click on the More... button and make sure LZW compression isn't selected. I just did a handful of these today and had no problem. YMMV, apparently, if you've tried this. Because Finale doesn't support Unicode, many of the really great arrows in many fonts just are not available, unless you import them as a graphic, which has it's own problems. Email me privately if you want my TIFF of a nice arrow. Try one of the symbol fonts. You don't say Mac or PC, but Zapf Dingbats has some. Use the Character Palette application on Mac to find arrows in every font on your system. The Bill Duncan Productivity Package has a nice V.S. with an embedded curved arrow as well, but you probably don't own that. Thanks, man! I took the survey. Anything to save the cost of upgrading yet again. One of the questions asked, Where do you go for technical support? One of the possible answers was the user manual (snicker), but notably missing was The Finale Listserve. Don't they know where their power users are? Another question asked how soon after the announcement of a new version do I upgrade. There wasn't an option for I buy it right away to save 20%, then don't use it for six months until the bug update comes out (like Finale 2007 and 2008), if at all (shades of FinMac2004). I hope this answers some questions for them.
