I just tried the steps as you described them, and find I do not get the
behavior you must described. When I c enter the second single note, I
get a melodic interval, not a harmonic one. What version of Finale, and
what platform are you using?

Sorry, you had it in the subject line, and for some reason I missed it.
I'm not sure why this is happening. As long as I've been using Finale,
the default behavior has been to advance the cursor to the next position
after entering a note or chord on a beat in Speedy entry. In the
interest of full disclosure, I should also note that while I own 2k8, I
do not presently have it installed, though I did check the behavior of
both later (2k9) and earlier (2k3) versions. Some followups to your
original question:

Enter a single note in speedy, switch to a different open running program
window (alt-tab or click on different window), switch back to Finale, enter
the next single note in the measure, it creates two notes (a chord instead
of just the single note you enter) comprised of the note you just entered
and the previous note.

How are you entering the notes, using the computer keyboard, or a MIDI
device? Also, what is the position of the speedy entry cursor at the
point at which you move to the other window, is it on the note you just
entered, or on the note you are ready to enter? I use a MIDI device.
When I enter a note in speedy, the cursor advances to the next position
as soon as I've entered the note. Now, if the cursor is on a note I've
entered, and I switch to another window, and back to Finale, the cursor
is where I left it. Same if I have the cursor waiting at the next
available position: if I switch to another window, and back to Finale,
the cursor is in the same position.

I do not think that what you are seeing is a bug; rather I suspect that
there is some obscure checkbox in a little noted corner of a dialog box
which has had a check added or removed without your recognizing it.

[Finale] FinWin 2010 startup freeze [Vista SP2]

2009-08-16 Thread Rodney Waterman

Have just submitted following to Finale support:

Re: Finale 2010 on Windows Vista (Home Premium) SP2, Intel Core 2 Duo
3.16Ghz, 4Gb DDR RAM:

The program has worked well for the last month. Finale 2010 today opens
and freezes in a greyed-out minimised window that is partially
off-screen. It cannot be moved or activated - it is 'dead' - the only
way to close it is through Ctrl+Alt+Del/Close program. Have re-booted
and restarted program - to no avail. My only thought is the last batch
of Windows Vista automatic updates (in the last few days - i.e. to Vista
SP2 etc) is the culprit???

Anyone had a similar experience? Any thoughts?

Your specs are very close to my specs, except that I'm
running Vista Home Premium 64bit and I've got no problem
opening Finale even though I've got SP2 installed.

Must be something else.

Rodney,

Have you tried deleting the preference file? Corrupted preferences
can cause problems like this.

That's advice frequently given to Mac users, Chuck, but so far as I'm
aware, it doesn't at all apply to Windows. I don't have a recent
version of Finale, but all versions that I have ever owned store the
"preferences" in an INI file, which is plain text. This can't get
corrupted. Perhaps later versions of Finale are more consistent with
Windows practices and use the registry, but the registry doesn't get
corrupted, either. It can get incorrect values, but I've not seen a
corrupt registry since the very early days of Windows 95.

Dear David,

Thanks for the Windows information. I have so little experience with
that OS that I was narrowly focussed on my own computer world and lost
sight of the possibility of that kind of difference in the way the
systems process and store things. Besides that, my "knowledge" comes
only form what I infer about how these things work - from the outside,
not from programming experience like yours, so that too limits the
usefulness of my suggestions. Anyway, missed on that one. Thanks
again.

Normally I use a MIDI device. The problem/bug does not occur when using
Speedy entry with only the computer keyboard ("Use MIDI Device For Input"
UNchecked).

This is all exactly as you describe on my machine as well.

I suspect some sort of MIDI issue here as well.
Another way to describe this "bug" would be as follows:

Normal behavior:
1. Hold down a pitch (say "G") on the MIDI keyboard
2. Press the number 4 on the computer keyboard
3. A "G" eighth note appears on the staff as it should
4. Press the number 4 again on the computer keyboard (without playing any
pitch on the MIDI keyboard)
5. An eighth note rest appears as it should

"Bug" appears when:
1. Hold down a pitch (say "G") on the MIDI keyboard
2. Press the number 4 on the computer keyboard
3. A "G" eighth note appears on the staff as it should
4. Switch to some other Windows program, and switch back to Finale
5. Press the number 4 again on the computer keyboard (without playing any
pitch on the MIDI keyboard)
6. Another "G" eighth note appears (instead of an eighth note rest) - this
is the "bug"

As you can see, pressing down any other pitch on the MIDI keyboard at this
point would cause a chord to appear as the new note you are pressing down
gets entered together with the "G" that is "stuck" in there.

I've noticed that using the "0" key to toggle in and out of the editing
frame has no effect on the bug, nor does using the arrow keys to move to
other measures. The "G" remains "stuck" in there. However, clicking with the
mouse on some blank white space area in the window and then clicking back
into the editing frame restores normal behavior.

[Finale] getting 9 systems per page

2009-08-16 Thread Lawrence David Eden

FinMac 2K7

What values to I need to plug in in order to get my extracted parts
to have 9 systems/page?

I have been trying this trial and error method:

I used Set-Up Wizard's Brass Quintet template and am trying to
customize it to my liking. When I try to extract a part from this
"dummy" template, I get only 8 systems/page. I enter different
values into the "Document/page format/parts to see if anything
changes in the part, but so far, nothing

Am I going about my trial and error the wrong way? What is the best
way to SEE the changes in page format and find what I like best?

Re: [Finale] getting 9 systems per page

2009-08-16 Thread Christopher Smith
Whatever values you enter into the Page Format>Parts dialogue only
take effect on NEW parts. To see those values applied, you would have
to select the Page Layout tool, then in the menu Redefine Parts...

Save this method for your default file, though. There is an easier
way, below, for one-off adjustments.

It would be much easier, though, in the Page Layout tool to show the
dialogue box Edit System Margins. I hope this box is self-
explanatory, but just know that you can check and uncheck which items
you want to apply to which range. For what you want to do, I usually
uncheck everything except Distance Between Systems and apply it to
systems 2 to [blank] which will apply it to system 2 to the end. If I
want it to apply to other parts, too, there is a box for that in more
recent versions of Finale, but I don't know about 2007.
