[Finale] Any idea if/when there will be a patch B for 2014?
There are a bunch of bugs in the A version. That smart find and paste is so messed up, it is practically unusable. Half the time, when copying hairpins, some of them get wildly wrong coordinates in the target measures, stretching them over 40 measures or something. And it no longer finds matches properly. It worked fine for me up through 2012. This is turning what should have been a 60 minute editing job into a 5 hour marathon because I have to apply all my slurs and hairpins manually. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu
Re: [Finale] Any idea if/when there will be a patch B for 2014?
Yes, there are bugs. The one you mention happens when the hairpins extend to the end of the measure. It renders the Smart Find and Paste feature nearly unusable. There are a number of other deeply annoying bugs - scrolling issues that occur when Finale has been open for a while, making navigation difficult, and one of the most annoying; cursor keys stop working in Speedy Entry (erratically - sometimes they work sometimes not) making navigation among entry points within the Speedy Entry frame require the use of the mouse - not at all convenient. This is the first time I've been so frustrated with an upgrade. On Apr 5, 2014, at 9:29 AM, Craig Parmerlee cr...@parmerlee.com wrote: There are a bunch of bugs in the A version. Hi Chuck, I believe the trigger for the arrows not working in Speedy is when an autosave is triggered while a different application is in the foreground. The solution to this (and many other similar bugs in Fin2014) is to click in the menu bar. This restores focus to Finale — something that is supposed to happen when you switch back to Finale being the frontmost application. I've just gotten into the habit of always clicking in the titlebar whenever I switch back to Fin2014 from a different app. [This is a Mac-only issue as far as I know.] Cheers, - DJA - WEB: http://www.secretsocietymusic.org On Apr 5, 2014, at 12:45 PM, Chuck Israels cisra...@comcast.net wrote: Yes, there are bugs. Hi Darcy, If this works, that will be a considerable help. This is similar to what happens when you click Finale Playback and another app is in front and you can't stop the Finale playback until you bring Finale to the front again. I will try this. Re: [Finale] Any idea if/when there will be a patch B for 2014?
In my case, I think the hairpins went to beat 4 (not literally to the edge of the measure), but maybe that is what you mean. And it doesn't screw up on all of them -- just some of them. But it makes such a mess that you can't really use the tool. I cannot recall whether this was broken at the base 2014 level of whether the A patch broke it. Does anybody have a recollection of that? Is there an easy way to back off the A patch, short of wiping out the installation and reinstalling again? It surely seems that 3 months ought to be enough time for the company to fix some of these bugs. On 4/5/2014 12:45 PM, Chuck Israels wrote: Yes, there are bugs. Re: [Finale] 16th note swing feel
This is a bit of a kludge. Human Playback applies swing to notes that are HALF of whatever the denominator is in the time signature. So in 4/4, it will swing 8ths. You would have to make the time signature 8/8 to get 16ths to swing. You can make it 8/8 but display in 4/4 (I suggest only doing that at the very end, as 8/8 will disturb beaming and the like). Even at that, I suspect that HP will only swing what the denominator is in BAR 1, so if you want to change partway through the piece, this will involve another kludge. What you would have to do is turn off HP, then apply the Human Playback plugin to ONLY the passage from the start up to the part you want double time. Then switch the time signature to 8/8, apply the plugin only to the double time passage, then switch it back to 4/4 and apply the HP plugin to the last passage. If you have several switches like this, it could take some time, and I doubt you will be able to switch in the middle of a bar (that would involve ANOTHER kludge, namely 2 bars of 4/8 instead of one bar of 8/8). Good luck, and report back if there are problems (I suspect there will be!) Re: [Finale] Any idea if/when there will be a patch B for 2014?
It really is a shame because 2014 is a good release in many respects. The Windows version has caused me relatively few problems, but this smart copy one is enough to drive one batty. I had hoped they had turned the corner after taking so much time to get 2014 out. I compare Finale with Cakewalk. I am a regular Sonar user. There are many similarities between the companies. Both have been around decades and have a large, loyal, extremely forgiving user base. Both companies got into financial difficulties and went through massive ownership changes. In Cakewalk's case, they were acquired by Roland for a number of years. During that time, they tried to advance the state of the art with their X1 and X2 platforms. Those packages were impressive, but so loaded with bugs they lost many users and couldn't attract new users. Their ownership thought the path forward was to keep developing new stuff and not attend to the bugs. It really came almost to riot proportions among the user base. There were many good people at Cakewalk, just as I am sure the same is true of Finale. And I'm sure none of them felt good about having such a poor quality product on the market. That didn't really change until Gibson bought Cakewalk. That was about the time that they released X3. While X3 continued strong technology leadership, there was clearly a huge effort put into cleaning up long-standing bugs. Most notably, in the 6 months that X3 has been out, there have been 5 major patch levels. There are still a few bugs, of course, but the user base is wildly enthusiastic now and actively recommending the product to colleagues. I'm not saying that a product must have one big patch release every 30 days, but a product with as many issues as Finale really deserves more than one patch release in 5 months.
