[Finale] Viewing problems
I am running 2014.5 on a Mac with El Capitan. One of the most annoying things I find is that, occasionally Finale refuses to display certain things properly--most notably the systems and their handles in Page Layout, and measures chosen by the selection tool (i.e., no highlight color shows up). I can redraw the screen, restart the program, and restart the computer--it usually makes no difference. Some days everything displays perfectly; other days, no matter which documents or what else I do, Finale refuses to display these two things especially. And I can't find anything in either Document or program preferences to alter this. (Not that I'm changing any prefs anyway.) Has anyone else had this problem? Or does anyone have a solution? Re: [Finale] Finale Digest, Vol 157, Issue 18
Thanks, I knew that, because it's part of the workaround MM gave me. But I have no interest in using the MIDI tool. It should not be necessary for writing a score and getting simple playback (and, for that matter, getting a good immediate estimate on Elapsed Time). I was very happy with the Tempo Tool, while it worked. It was quick, easy, and definitive (while it worked). Then in 2014.5 it didn't work. And now apparently it's gone. Not cool. Allen The Tempo Tool changes has been editable and visible through the MIDI Tool for the past couple of Finale versions. [Finale] Tempo tool
I haven't yet tried the 25 demo. Frankly, I'm reluctant and even a little afraid. But in response to Lee Actor's question, I would be extremely distressed if the Tempo Tool has been eliminated, unless all of its functionality has been put somewhere equally accessible! At least on my version of 2014.5 (El Capitan), as I mentioned a few days ago, the Tempo Tool is already buggy, because you can no longer change tempi on more than one beat of the bar (only one event per bar is allowed). MM said they were working on fixing it. If getting rid of a whole tool is their idea of "fixing" a problem...I will be an extremely unhappy camper! Allen Am I the only one who is distressed by the elimination of the Tempo Tool in the new version of Finale? One of the reviews I read referred to it as a welcome clean-up of an unnecessary feature that no one used. Hey, I use it all the time! At least in conjunction with the legacy JW Tempo plugin, as I don't trust Human Playback to sculpt tempo changes the way I'd like. Can someone who has installed v25 please tell me whether you can at least use Edit Tempo in the MIDI menu? I guess that would be an adequate substitute for the Tempo Tool. And I suppose it's too much to hope that the MIDI Tool has finally gotten a long-needed overhaul; as far as I can tell, the same bugs have been there for the last 20 years. -Lee ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu
[Finale] New Finale
I would so much like to be optimistic about the new version--especially that the bugs from 2014 will be fixed! But all of this discussion makes me feel, shall we say, somewhat skeptical... Just for fun, here is a list of bugs I am constantly encountering in 2014.5 for Mac (with El Capitan). Please feel free to correct me if I've missed a fix--or double the fun, and add the bugs you've discovered to the list! -Harp parts with glissandi in both hands don't play back correctly in Aria. -Harmonics play back correctly in some staves but not in others. -Smart Shape metatools can't be changed. -Text blocks do not display properly in Page View, except in Column View. (Or sometimes Book View.) -Sometimes Page View just refuses to change pages. Only switching to Scroll View gets me to the proper place. This happens (and disappears) unpredictably. -Contrary to the User Guide, Command-Home and command-End do not work in Page View. -At least when converting older versions to 2014, EPS graphics do not display properly. -The Tempo tool no longer allows more than one tempo in a bar! (There are some very kludgy workarounds.) -Playback controls do not work well; in particular, you have to hit either Stop or the space bar many times to get playback to stop. [Finale] Hairpins in 2014.5
I recently switched to Finale 2014.5 (running El Capitan). When converting older documents (from 2011), sometimes I try to edit a pre-existing crescendo ordiminuendo hairpin in Smart Shape tool, because it is too short. But when I tryto lengthen it, at least in Page View (by dragging the right end of the hairpin to the last beat ofthe bar, for example), instead of slowly stretching, the right end it jumps waypast the margin and off the page! Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem? [Finale] Page View problems in 2014.5
I recently upgrade to 2014.5 running El Capitan. Contrary to what the User Guide says, Command-Home and Command-End do not work in Page View to jump to the first or last page. Does anyone else have this problem, or does anyone know how to make it work? Also -- and this is not consistent -- sometimes when I change notes in Speedy Entry (in Page View), the changes don't display, even when I redraw the screen! The only way I have found around this is to switch to Scroll View, then back to Page View -- then the changes appear correctly. [Finale] Text tool problem
When I use the text tool in 2014.5 (running El Capitan) to create a text block, the insertion point appears above and to the right of the box, rather than in it. As I type, it continues to track my typing, but always above and to the right. This makes it almost impossible to edit a text block with any precision, because placing the cursor at a particular point in the text does NOT bring the insertion point to that point, and clicking inside the box unchecks the box! Does anyone else have this problem? Or a solution? [Finale] Finale 2014.5 problems
I have been offline for some months now, so please forgive me if these issues have already been dealt with. I switched from 2011 to 2014.5 (on a new iMac running El Capitan) a few weeks ago, and have run into a number of problems. 1. When I use the Text tool to edit a text block on a page, I often have the problem that when I click inside the text, the insertion point does not move to the place in the text where I clicked. Instead, it often disappears, and the text block handle unchecks itself! Or else the insertion point moves to an invisible place farther up the page -- above the text block, not inside it. (It still edits the text if I proceed carefully, but it's difficult without proper visual feedback!) 2. Contrary to the User Guide, Command-Home and Command-End do not work in Page View to jump to the first or last page. 3. Sometimes when I change notes in Speedy Entry, the changes don't display, even when I redraw the screen! The only way I have found around this is to switch to Scroll View, then back to Page View, and then the changes appear. 4. Sometimes I have tried to edit a pre-existing crescendo or diminuendo hairpin in Smart Shape tool because it is too short. But when I try to lengthen it (by dragging the right end of the hairpin to the last beat of the bar, for example), instead of slowly stretching, the right end it jumps way past the margin and off the page! 5. Converting a 2011 score to 2014.5, I found that EPS graphics files placed on the title page (to show special notation such as snap pizzicato) would not display. All that showed inside the graphics rectangle was part of the word "embedded." I worked around this by converting the graphics files to PDFs, which do display properly. Does Finale no longer display EPS graphics properly? I would appreciate knowing if anyone has had similar problems, or solutions! Thanks. [Finale] Sudden Preview problem
I am using Finale 2011 on Mac OS 10.5.8. Forgive me if this is a stupid question--I'm not even sure if it's a Finale problem. I am editing a large orchestral score, and every few days I make a PDF copy for reference. In the past two days, the PDF has suddenly been showing up wrong in Preview - hash marks in place of whole rests, gibberish signs (the Dal Segno, for instance) appearing in weird places. It also prints that way. I hadn't changed any settings or preferences, or downloaded anything new. I just downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader and in Reader the score looks fine and prints fine. But I hate Reader and far prefer Preview. Can anyone give me a fix or a reason for this?
