[Finale] metatool

2011-06-02 Thread George Ports
How can I make a metatool of a bent arrow (bent note for guitar)? Orhow can
I make an expression of the same? Most of the arrows I need are the same size
and length.
Will any of these things attach the arrow to the note for me?
I'm using WinFin 2006.
Sure would appreciate any help.

George,
If you are entering with a MIDI keyboard and want to play in
8ths note triplets, use the caps key. I am on Mac 2010 but I would
guess it would be the same. On Mac, I use the option key - use your key
for windows but before you set the 3 for the triplet, set the caps lock
and set the 8th note. If you set the 8th note, then set the triplet,

you will continue to have 8th note triplets until you release the caps
lock or change the note value. You can use the caps lock to retain the
note value, even when you do not desire tuplets.
Hope that helps!

Re: [Finale] Tuplets Default

2010-04-29 Thread George Ports

Hi again Michael,
GOT IT!!! Finally...I remembered something about alt + 9 in Simple
Entry. I entered the first 1/8 note and hit alt + 9 while it was still
selected..that brought up a different looking dialog box called "Simple
Entry tuplet definition". I set what I wanted, pressed save as, and now all
is well! Opened a new score which worked again.
None of this could have happened for me without your help since you gave me
enough ideas on where to look for the solution. Thanks again for you taking
the time to help me.

Hi Michael,
What you suggested with Speedy works real good except it works only
once. I have to hit control+3 on each set of 1/8 note triplets. I tried to
hit caps lock first to hold all the notes to triplets to no avail.
I use 'Simple Entry' almost always and is where I ran into the problem.
What I'd really wish I could do is be able to select 'Set Default' in the
'tuplet definition menu' and make it stay 1/8 triplets as a default but, it
keeps going back to: 3 eighths in the space of 2 eighth notes (instead of 3
eighths in the space of 1 quarter note). There's got to be some way to set
the default and make it stick, especially since it was that way originally.
I can work around all this but, it is real time consuming.
Thanks for all your help. If you run across a way to make the default to
stay in Simple entry, could you let me know?
Thanks again,

I would guess that it should work for all recent versions on either

I was afraid that might be the case that it would not hold from one instance

There is probably another preference setting somewhere in the bowels of the
application?
This is what I found in the manual under tuplets:

To en ter tuplets with the Speedy Entry Tool

1. Click the Speedy Entry Tool image\Simple_Entry_Tool.gif, and click
the measure in question. The editing frame appears.
2. If MIDI is not being used, place the cursor on the correct pitch.
3. Press option -number in the number keypad. You can press any number
between 2 and 8 to specify the tuplet value that you’re about to enter. When
you do so, the number you pressed appears in the upper right corner of the
editing frame, telling you that Finale is ready to group the next notes you
enter as a tuplet defined by that number. If you need to enter a more
complex tuplet (or want to specify a particular bracket or slur
configuration), press option –1, and the Tuplet Definition dialog box will
appear (see Tuplet Definition dialog box ).
4. Enter the notes of the tuplet. The value of the first note you enter
tells Finale whether you’re entering an eighth-note tuplet, quarter-note
tuplet, and so on. Finale automatically groups them and brackets them
according to the default visual tuplet settings (see “ To predefine the
appearance of tuplets , ” below). To enter many tuplets in a row, see To
enter many notes of the same value (hands-free MIDI method) .

[Finale] White Out around finger numbers in tab

2010-03-07 Thread George Ports
The white out around fingering on tab doesn't work on the first 3 chords of
a song...the rest are fine. To input or edit these I:
dbl clicked fretboard to get dhord definition menu.
Clicked on edit styles/ fingering numbers/ the white out is set to "0".
Finale screen shows it to be correct but, the print out shows the string
line all the way through the number without any white out around the number.
Happens to the first 2, sometimes 3 chords.
One of the chord diagrams has string number 2 with white out and string
number 4 with a line through it.
This is so frustrating. Can anyone help? It would surely be appreciated.

[Finale] Problems with fonts

2010-02-16 Thread George Ports
Am trying to make a page of uke chords (only, no staff showing). Want the
finger numbers to have a touch of white space on top and bottom, which most of
them do but, there are a couple that are solid which makes the string line show
through the number. I tried to copy/paste from one of the same chords that was
correct but, it still was wrong after doing so.

It would be ideal to change the font to CombiNumerals (which I have) since they
can show the number with a circle around it. CombiNumerals can also show a half
circle around the number (which I don't want) and is what keeps coming up when
I try to change it. Can't seem to get it with the full circle. It would be
alright if I could do the finale default number with a circle around that but,
I don't know how to do that.

I have the same problem. Never could figure out how to get them to stay
put,

so what I do is enter the entire score then go back and move all the grace
notes where they should be. If you don't enter any more music (including
dynamics, etc.) they should stay where you put them long enough to save a
PDF file of the score. The PDF process captures them where you moved them
to

and it should look right.

Kind of a ridiculous solution, I know, and I'm sure there's probably a
much

simpler way of doing it but I've never been able to figure it out.

Spacing." Try checking "keep current." That seems to help.

[Finale] Grace note not staying

2009-07-25 Thread George Ports
How can I move a grace note (in the tab staff) that is too close to the next
note and get it to stay there?
I used speedy entry to select the grace note.it would move to where I'd
place it but, it moved right back when I would exit it.
It seems to work okay in the notation staff but, not in the tab staff.
Any help would sure be appreciated.

You might put the Bb chord on the 1st beat of the next measure and drag it

Re: [Finale] how to search list archives? Blue Flash

Hi Lawrence,
Here is something I saved awhile back concerning this. I hope it will
help.

Ø Believe it or not - the Blue Triangle appears because you have
Internet
Explorer 7 installed. To get rid of the triangle, click on the Document
Menu -->

Document Options --> Lines and Curves. In the upper right hand corner is a
Resolution field. Change the number in the field until the triangle
sdisappear (try

around 10). Don't know why it just showed up but this should fix it.

[Finale] Playback Problems

2008-02-26 Thread George Ports
Hadn't heard any replies to a question I had today.wondered if
I sent it to the wrong Finale address. Am sending it here in case this is the
right place for me to ask for help.

Am having trouble with playback sounding smooth with my WinFin 2006. Is
'latency' the correct term for the sound not being smooth?
Can anyone help me to fix this? The sound was delayed on the second note of
an 1/8 passage. The rest of the page played fine.
Don't know if I need to say that my sound card is an Audigy.
Am trying to create a CD of 50 sound examples to enclude with a book. Any
help would deeply be appreciated. Hope I've included all the necessary
information concerning my setup.

Just to clarify -- it comes with SOME instruments from GPO, JABB, Concert

But it does come with enough that complete concert band, complete

No bass flute, though. For that you still have to resort to their GM
library, which allows samples for any instrument to be played on any of
the 128 midi notes.

The short answer is no.

There is no single character that is a dotted quarter in Maestro.

Why do you need this? There might be a better alternative.

If you need to ask this you've obviously not entered much music in 6/8

Make new text expression. Make the font Maestro 24. Type q, then
period. Done. What could be easier?

If you want the dot higher (I might) then select it and adjust the
baseline in the Text menu. You can make it farther away by adding
spaces in between of varying point sizes (darn Finale to heck for
making routine kerning adjustments such a kludge!)

Now I'm having trouble creating an eighth note that has a
(beam) extention instead of a flag. I can see how to do it at the
end of a couple of eighths but, not just one eighth. I really
searched a lot in the help section to no avail.

Yeah, this one is tougher. The beam is normally drawn as a line in
Finale, and it is not a character.

I would create this one as a Shape expression. Add a text character q
in Maestro font, then draw a line of appropriate thickness for the
beam. I always hate the Shape designer in Finale, as it is so
ungraceful and unforgiving. Read up on the Shape Designer in the manual.

Do you mean in a word processor or in Finale as music? In Finale, not as

Finale won't give you an option for this. I would do this with an
auto-placing measure expression, set to always attach to the barline,
this staff only. This way you won't have to keep on placing them
individually, once you have fiddled around with the placement for the

You could kludge it by inserting a very narrow, blank measure. That
makes two barlines the right distance apart, and you can make it
invisible in some staves.

If you need playback, then it's a lot more kludging.

Easy way to do this would be to save your Chords in a Library file, load
them into your Jazz Font Default file. When you start a new project,
you'll have all your custom chords in there.

You can also use the library in existing documents. Load the old
document, load the chords, go to the chord too, click some where, go to
advanced, down where suffix is go to select, then start deleting the
ones you want to replace, and Finale will prompt you to select a
replacement, and you can select your new chord symbol there, and it will
replace all symbols in the document with the new symbol.

I did this a lot when I purchased Bill Duncan's Productivity package,
and decided to use his excellent chords in place of the hodge podge
assortment I was using.

Suffixes (suffices?) are created individually (though all instances of
say, m7(b5) will probably be the same suffix) so you have to edit the
suffixes in the Chord Suffix editor.

Chord Tool
Chord Menu>Manual Input, double click on a chord symbol's handle.
Click Show Advanced, then down under Definition click Suffix - Edit.
Each character is edited individually, so step through by hitting Next
until you get to the b. Change it to 5, hit Number and Prefix with Flat.

Hit Next again and change the 5 to the right parenthesis.
Hit Next again and delete the former right parenthesis. Strangely, you
can't delete the b and then edit the 5 to include the flat, as once you
delete a character strange things happen to the next characters.
Alter the positioning as you wish by dragging the tiny little handle in
the tiny little box, curse loudly, write an abusive email to MakeMusic
about how complex this whole procedure is, and OK your way back to the
score. All the m7(b5) chords in the score will now contain the edit.

Repeat for the next suffix, including the cursing and emails.

Christopher

you can adjust the stem connections in relation to the different noteheads
in the doc options: stems: stem connections.

i get the feeling that there might be an easier way to do what you are

[Finale] circled note heads

2007-03-30 Thread George Ports
Thanks to Aaron, Christopher, and Jeff for your great help concerning circled
noteheads. Using the Maestro K font with a metatool seems to work pretty good
for me. It lines up good with the note vertically but, a little to the right
horizontally which takes a small adjustment. Guess I don't have the line up
with metatools just right. At least I have the circles now.

What could be easier than that? If you create your circle as a shape
expression, or as an articulation, and then get the positioning right, you
can assign it to a metatool and it will place itself perfectly every time.

Or, for a medium-length selection, enter the music normally, then select
with Mass Edit and do Rebeam to Time Signature and choose 8/8.

Of course, if you're doing something with lyrics, you'll get this effect
after you enter your lyrics, select the measures with Mass Edit, and do
Rebeam to Lyrics.

Lawrence's suggestion is the best one for an entire work, but if the
passage is short, then in Speedy Entry the backslash key break/ creates

You can change the definition in Document Options | Tuplets. Then to apply

Sure. In the tuplet definition box, uncheck the box under Appearance that
says "Break slur or bracket." You'll probably also want to adjust the

Thanks for explaining page view vs. scroll view David. After hours of
hastle, I did find a work around.
I removed optimization/optimized staves/put brackets on all single
staves which were already there since it's for single stave guitar/used
Ctrl-Shift to highlight all the staves except for the one at the bottom of
the page/stretched it up to the next staff to connect the two staves.
This is a weird way I'm sure, but it did work. I hope this might help
anyone else who may run across the same problem.

You need to add a second staff to each system. Finale treats each staff
in a single-staff score as its own system, and you can't put brackets
across systems.

So add a second staff, which will be empty, define a group for those two
staves and then you can place a bracket.

You will have to copy and paste to get the music you want sounding
together into the empty staff of the system.

You have run into a big problem that arises from entering the music in
page view, if you aren't a veteran Finale user -- you thought that the two
staves you entered the music on would be related to each other. No such
luck.

I hope this helps -- thanks for adding the outline of how you set things
up, it's clear now why you can't add a bracket where you think you should
be able to add one.

Yes, you can do that -- you create a group of those two staves and select

To create groups, using the Staff tool you click one staff handle,

You will not find a good guitar sound in collections. After long search I
finally gave up and made my own soundfont. You can download it at:

http://www.yatesguitar.com/misc/Milburn-normal.SF2 (4.7MB)

Note that this only has 'normal' tone. The complete soundfont (32MB) has
other patches for staccato, ponticello, tasto, gliss, vibrato, etc. Demos
using the complete font can be heard at:

http://www.yatesguitar.com/misc/Arabe-Demo.mp3 (a very cheesy
interpretation of Capricho Arabe to show off the font).

convincing example using Angelo Gilardino's Colloquio)

Um, purchase a better software sampler? Native Instruments Bandstand, or
Garritan Jazz Band. There are a lot of choices out there. The built in
Finale sounds are, um, to be nice, very dated.

The file formats were either jpeg or tiff...not sure now what one I
used.
The images disappear rather than move.sorry that I didn't
explain that real well.
I'll try smart shape as you suggest since I don't have to attach them to
anything or am I wrong on that.
This page is a 'Dictionary of Music' for a book I'm doing. There aren't
any staves on it...all type and characters. Couldn't remember how to
hide the staff which made me merely drag it off the bottom of the page so I
could put these different graphics on the page. I used maestro fonts for
everything I could but, couldn't find a font for cresc or dim and is why I
opted to import some sort of graphic.
512 ram seems to be enough to me also but, my hard drive really is
pretty full and is why I probably should get it cleaned up anyway as I
mentioned earlier.
Thanks again for all your help David. You really spend a lot of your
precious time with a lot of people of this great group.

By file format, I didn't mean what the graphic was of. I meant was it a
.jpg or a .tiff or were you maybe trying to use some other format such as
.gif or .bmp or .wmf or, since you were using photoshop, had you saved it
in a native photoshop format.

I'm not sure why your expressions would move around when you moved the
page around. They should stay where you placed them, but remember that
they're either anchored to notes or to measures, so if the measures move,
the expressions will move.

You might do better using the smart shape tool to place them where you
want them.

As for your ram, you're right that 512 isn't a lot these days, but it
should be enough for what you're doing.

George, I know this doesn't answer your question about the crash, but why
are you creating cresc. and dim. in Photoshop? If you mean these as text
'cresc' and 'dim', then you should be using the Finale Expression tool
(text expressions). If you're trying to create hairpins, then look at the
Smartshape Tool.

Unless you're doing something very odd with these basic musical symbols, I
don't think there's any reason to go outside Finale.

[snip]

What is the file format of the graphic you're trying to import?

Are you sure the graphic file isn't corrupt? Does it open fine in other
programs?

"embedding" is one way of having a graphic attached to a finale file, and
linking is the other way. Embedding actually places all the data for the
graphic within the Finale file, so that it will always show up whenever
that file is opened, but it adds to the size of the Finale file. Linking
merely places a short link to wherever the graphics file resides on your
computer, so sending the Finale file to someone else who doesn't have the
graphic file in the same location on their computer as you have it on your
computer will result in problems.

Could this be the problem? Your work computer has the graphic but your
home computer doesn't have it? If you have embedded the graphic (there
was an option to do so when you first placed the graphic in the Finale
document), there should be no problem unless your computer at home has too
little ram for Finale to fully function. The CPU usage may be low but if
there isn't enough physical RAM you might still get the same result.

What is the size of the finale file? What is the file size of the
graphic? Are you embedding the graphic, or importing it by reference? If
you are embedding it, you may be exceeding the memory on your computer.
You might create a new version of the graphic with a smaller
resolution--say 150 dpi instead of 600, and seeing if this will import;
given a fixed image size, the 150 dpi file will be 1/16 the size of the
600 dpi one. If it is essential to maintain the graphic as it is, you may
have to resort to upping the memory in your machine. Or, you can revert
to the older way of dealing with graphics, and import it by reference
instead of embedding it.

Umm, there's a quick key for that, I think it is F for "flip", though it
might be in conjunction with a modifier key. It flips the tuplet to the
other side without you having to drag the hooks around and re- jig the
angles and the number position.

Easy.

To the wisdom of the list,

I am doing a classical guitar part - one staff with notes, rests, bar
lines, numbers, numbers in circles, etc. You can sense I know nothing
about classical guitar notation practice. The composer has carefully
marked the numbers and numbers in circles.I just enter what I see. Oh,
yes, I do know that numbers go beside noteheads, numbers in circles go off
the ends of stems.

The Arial Narrow, 8 point, works perfectly for numbers in spaces between
noteheads, which are tight much of the time. The problem is Arial has no
number zero. Numbers in circles are not a problem. Is there another narrow
sans serif font in the Windows world with a zero which is a good match for
Arial Narrow that I can enter in 8 pt.? The upper or lower case letter o
will not do, and I have not the ability to build what I need from
scratch, even though the zero is a rather simple geometric form.

I will be deeply indebted if you can provide a solution.

Ken

Prepare your fretboards with the chord tool,
attaching them to rests. Align fretboards on top of the staff for convenience.
In the staff tool, deselect all the checkboxes, and select the 0-line
staff option. That should do it for you.John

[Finale] Fret number font

2005-08-11 Thread George Ports

Have figured out how to place the 'fret number'
next to a guitar grid by editing it etc.  When I do another chord and put
the number in a different 'vertical' position, it changes all of the fret number
positions to the same as the new one.
Isn't there a way to have each one
separate? Also, is there some way I can save all of these that I'm creating so I
can continue using them in other songs?
Thanks for any help.

[Finale] Time Signature

How can I change the time signature from 1/4 to 4/4
in a pickup measure without moving anything (Lyrics etc.) around? The 4/4 was
accidently put in measure 1 instead of the pickup measure.
I hide the 4/4 measure and can
show the 1/4 measure in the pickup measure but the pickup measure needs to say
4/4. Everything moves around when I try to change the 4/4 to 1/4.
Sorry for rambling on.

Re: [Finale] PDF print problems

2005-05-06 Thread George Ports
Hi Hiro,
The finale file was created in winfinale 2003a. I then made a pdf file
by using Acrobat Distiller (Adobe Acrobat 5.0). The finale printout is
fine.the pdf is the one with 'frame type' lines around the
graphicsometimes on across the bottom of the graphic, sometimes on
the left or right side of the graphic. I tried to delete the graphic in
finale and redo the graphic, then remade the pdf to see the same result.
I also tried to do all of the above with winfin 2005 to no avail.

This is a real hard way to do it. Here's an easier
way. There is a staff style called Slash Notation. In the Staff tool,
select the passage, hit S (for Slash). All of layer 1 is turned into slashes.
If you hit R (for RHythmic) every thing turns into stemmed slashes. As
you noticed, you need entries in layer 1 to attach the chords to. I use rests
so they don't play back.To make items attached to Layer 1 and other
layers appear as well, you have to edit the Staff Style. Make this edit in
your default file, too, and save it, so that you won't ever have to do it
again.1) To make Slash Notation and
Rhythmic Notation staff styles show notes in other layers (essential for drum
  parts!)Select the Staff
Tool (looks like a treble clef)Staff Menu>Define Staff StylesBeside
“Available Styles” select “Slash Notation”Directly below that about two
inches is a check box and “Alternate Notation.” Click on the “Select” button
just below that.In the “Alternate Notation” dialogue box at the bottom,
there are four options available; “Show Items Attached to Notes, Show Notes in
Other Layers, Show Items Attached to Notes in Other Layers, and Add Dots to
Slashes in Compound Meters.” ALL of them should be checked.Click
OKBeside “Available Styles” select “Rhythmic Notation”Click on the
“Select” button just below “Alternate Notation” againIn the “Alternate
Notation” dialogue box at the bottom, there are four options available; “Show
Items Attached to Notes, Show Notes in Other Layers, Show Items Attached to
Notes in Other Layers, and Stems up in Rhythmic Notation”. Check ONLY the
first three; leave the stem direction alone.Click OK, then OK in the Staff
  Styles dialogue box.That's
  it!ChristopherOn Mar 15, 2005, at 12:42 PM, George Ports
