Re: [Finale] REPEAT SIGN INSIDE A BAR

2017-03-31 Thread John Witmer
I've used the app that allows an "internal" repeat sign many times. It is quite
flexible. Don't bother with trying to move a regular repeat sign. You might get
it to work, but why bother when the answer is so easy.

Re: [Finale] finale development team - time spent...

2016-12-09 Thread John Witmer
To all you professional musicians, a very large number of Finale users are NOT
professional musicians. I do quite a bit of notation for non-professional
singers. They really appreciate the courtesy accidentals (by the way, I have a
good friend who sincerely believes they should be called "intentionals" rather
than "accidentals".) Many of you regard the time you spent learning to be a
"professional musician" entitles you to be more than a little proud. Does it
really entitle you to look down your nose at an amateur who may have worked
just as hard to learn the rudiments of music without ever getting a single
dollar to show for it?
Please don't take this note as an insult; I really appreciate all the comments

Re: [Finale] Reliable way to combine multiple files

2016-12-09 Thread John Witmer
Robert,
I need your advice. I'm in the process of completing a 200 song compendium
using Finale 2014.5  When it is finished, (I promised it would be ready "early"
in 2017), I'll need to merge the individual charts for a single document. This
is for the sole use of a retirement community, but they'll need about 100
copies. I believe I have volunteers who will fund the printing, but I need to
get good copy.

Now, is Finale 25 good enough to undertake this task, or should I finish it
with Finale 2014.5? Either way, I'm afraid it will be a real chore. If all else
fails, I'll have to print 200 separate charts and collate them. This will be
hard because I need to print most pages "back-to-back" to keep the total size
less than an unabridged dictionary.

Your advice would be gratefully appreciated.

halfway decent job, but

1. It fails to copy lyric baseline adjustments (and I would guess probably
expression baseline adjustments as well).
2. It idiotically goes nuts if a bar has too many beats (like a hard whole
rest in a 2/4 bar, which is frequently required for L1/L2 parts).
3. It makes a mess of lyric text.
4. It doesn't know how to create percussion staves that match the source
file, so percussion is a mess.

Does anyone know a better way?

[Finale] Changing the measure number in playback controls

2015-02-15 Thread John Witmer
Hey Finale lovers (haters?)

Do you know of a way to change the color in the measure numbers in the
playback contols?
When reviewing a chart, it is always useful to play it back to catch any
obvious errors.
This usually means starting and stopping and frequently changing the measure
where you want
to start playback. When I start to change the measure number in the playback
controls, Finale *
changes the number color to blue which makes it very difficult for these old
eyes to read . Do
any of you expert engravers know how to change this? Black on orange would
be great, but
I'd settle for a simple black on white.

  John,

I haven't noticed phantom playback notes yet,
but I very often have hanging notes:
notes that didn't receive the note off signal.
It's a confirmed bug in human playback.

If these phantom notes always appear at the same position
in the score and you can't get rid of the, it may help to add
all notes off-text expressions in these measures.
Just define an empty text expression with playback set to:
Type: Controller: 123 (Other then appears in the right drop down menu)
  Set to value: 0

I have a slightly different tuplet problem. When I adjust measure widths to
make crowed notes more visible, the tuplet brackets (or slurs) don't move with

identify the tuplet group, but sometimes the misplaced bracket or slur leads to
grouping the wrong notes under the tuplet.
I use Finale 2012c with WIN.

It is set up in Preferences as I normally have it - Auto-Save every 5
minutes and directed to a Backups folder, but the folder remains empty and I
don’t get the short interruption that normally accompanies the Auto-Save
process. MM is on vacation until Monday, so I can’t get help from them. I did
try quitting and re-starting Finale, and I am out of ideas.

   Thanks,

   Chuck

Hey Robert,
Start New Piece plugin sounds like something I really could use.
I can't find any such plugins on my copy of Finale 2012.
Is this only available on later additions?

  Dave,

Finale can absolutely do what you want. BTW: I said to *check* the Top
Staff in the linked parts panel.

As for restarting at one, you'll have to create a new measure number region
each time for that. I recommend getting the one you have now to work first,
then using a plugin like JW Start New Piece to restart at each break. (That
plugin will also suppress the warning time sig/clef/key changes at the end
  of the previous bar.)

And yes, you can have a break like that in the middle of the page. Not
(easily) however on the same line.

Re: [Finale] print size

2014-12-19 Thread John Witmer
As far as my band is concerned, if it can't be printed in 8 1/2 x 11 format, it
doesn't exist.
That said, it has led to charts that feature print so small it is very
difficult to sight-read.
This is particularly true of the director's full score. He has learned to live
with it. grin
We usually just opt for more pages of 8 1/2 x 11.
Nick, does that answer your question?

Re: [Finale] Slight OT

2014-12-19 Thread John Witmer
As a non-professional sometime engraver, I just happened to review the MOLA
standards. The wide availability of computer programs such as Finale have made
it possible for directors and arrangers to make changes in a score and have
them printed locally. I have to conclude that MOLA is out of touch with the
real world. 8 1/2 x 11 paper has become so standard in the US that any
variation from it that requires printing to a larger size paper requires
printers that are just not available or within the budgets of small ensembles.
I suspect that the MOLA standard will not last much longer.

In all due respect,
John Witmer

[Finale] Cutting the ryhthm in half

2014-11-09 Thread John Witmer
There must be an easy way to do this, but I haven't thought of it yet.
Would someone care to suggest how to cut the rhythm of a selection in half
without rewriting
every measure? ie. Take a piece that is written dotted half note, quarter note
and make it dotted
quarter note, eighth note. There would be half as many measures.

Duplicate the existing P marking, edit it and add dash f after the p. Done.

Actually, you might want to change the font to Times New Roman 12 or 14 for
the dash, because of height, but basically, that's it.

Re: [Finale] Finale Book Author

2014-10-03 Thread John Witmer
Thanks for your comments, David.

You are correct in chastising me for jumping the gun on Trailblazer. My only
excuse is that,
at 84, I am becoming a cranky old man.
[Mark Johnson, if you should happen to be reading this thread, I apologise
profusely. I guess
it's a question of different strokes for different folks.]

I do own the 2012 version of Trailblazer. It does indeed refer to Score
Manager.
I rarely use Trailblazer however as I have never been able to find a reference
to the particular
problem I was having at the time. For me it is not a good reference site. My
background is in
research, so I know a little bit about it. I ran my own research firm for many
years.

Perhaps different people have a different approach in using a reference. When I
pick up
a reference book, it is usually because I need some information right now. I
don't have
a lot of time and patience to wade thru a long discussion.*

My current technique for solving a Finale problem is to google it. This
usually gives
the fastest result. Google is a more refined method of searching the internet
than the one
I used to use in my business.. I just googled ScoreManager and came up with a
six page
discription of the feature which came directly from MakeMusic's own user guide.
The
chief problem with that user guide is that it's not in printed form. The
original Finale
included a printed user guide which served well.

Many years ago, while attending Harmony College (a school run for Barbershop
enthusiasts),
I took a class in Finale from a guy who was working for the company. He
provided us with
the then current users guide, Hal Leonard's Pocket Music Dictionary and The
Essential Dictionary
of Music Notation. I find these last two books of constant value even today.
Since I don't engrave
professionally, they are sufficient for my purposes in their limited
objectives. What I hope
to have some day is an equivalent source for Finale itself, if I should live so
long. grin

I should know better than to be critical of a group that has been very
welcoming to me as a non-
professional. If there is anyone else to whom I owe an apology, I am very sorry
for offending you.

* Years ago, while teaching a begining level collage course, students asked me
for the best way to
study for a final exam. I suggested that the best way to prepare for an
objective exam was to look
at the index of the text book. Be sure that you can define and explain every
single entry. This
technique only works with a well-indexed text, but most college textbooks are
so equiped.

You must have a different Trailblazer series than I have -- the
Finale 2014: A Trailblazer Guide certainly does discuss the Score
Manager, and it's listed in the clear index at the back of the book. It
also discusses FinaleScript -- again, that's listed in the clear index
at the back of the book. And I checked again in Finale 2012: A
Trailblazer Guide and both of those items are discussed also and are
clearly listed in the index, too.

Perhaps you should actually buy the book and sit down and read it before
telling people what it does or doesn't include.

From the point of view of a would-be engraver the Trailblazer guides
are an excellent resource. From the point of view of a professional
engraver already working in the field it still is a good resource for
each new version because it does document the behavior of the new
version, which can be especially important for someone making a jump
  from several versions earlier.

I think Mark Johnson has done an excellent job with the Trailblazer
series and it surprised me to learn that some other publisher is looking
to publish a book on Finale.

What these books don't do (and don't claim to do, so it shouldn't be
held against them) is to serve as a music engraving handbook. So for a
would-be engraver (which term implies people who don't yet have
experience using a computer for engraving music) this won't teach them
about music notation nor common practices. There are other excellent
books for people to learn about music notation from. People have to
already know what properly engraved music looks like -- if they don't
then they need to study published music and find what they need/want to
have their engraved music look like. The Trailblazer books are intended
only to serve as guides to help Finale users get the most out of Finale.
What people do with it (i.e. how their engraved music ends up looking)
  is up to them.

It sure would be a service to the industry if someone were to write a
DEFINITIVE guide to Finale. The so-called trailbazer series have been nothing
more than a compilation of the rough introductions to each of the main segments
of Finale. Not only do they not touch the more difficult parts, they don't even
have an index that is worth much. For example they don't evem discuss the Score
Manager or how to write scripts. It just seems to be a list of the items in the
table of contents.

A well written guide from the point of view of a would-be music engraver would
be far more useful than for just the next isssue of Finale. Heck, you could
probably sell a copy to 90% of the readers of this site.

Re: [Finale] Emergency help

Hey Justin,
OK, partial success. Deleting the ini files allowed Finale to recognise my
Roland.
However, at first only the simple entry method worked, but after playing around
a little with the midi controls
I got the speedy entry to work again.
Thank you for all your help.

If you go to the MIDI/Audio Menu Device Setup MIDI Setup, is your
Roland/MIDI interface showing as an available device?

  If not, try this first:

  1) Close Finale

  2) Shut down your PC and turn off your Roland

  3) Verify your USB/MIDI cables are still connected properly

  4) Turn the Roland back on then turn the computer back on. Launch Finale and
see if Finale recognizes it.

If not, try the following. This will reset your preferences for Finale but
will not impact any of your files.

  1) Close Finale then open a Windows Explorer window. Turn on Hidden Files and
Folders by going to the Tools menu Folder and Search Options View Tab and
check Show Hidden Files and Folders.

  2) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(Your User Name)\Application
Data\MakeMusic\Finale 2012

  3) Locate the files named Finale.ini and Finmidi.ini. Drag these to the
Trash.

  4) Reboot your PC and re-launch Finale. You should be prompted on open to
re-select your MIDI preferences. Select the appropriate setup then see if
Finale recognizes the device again.

Re: [Finale] Keyless Signature

2014-07-26 Thread John Witmer
Thanks to those who tried to explain this to me.
If I understand this correctly, a keyless piece isn't really keyless, it is
just written without a key signature--all the accidentals are specified
with each note. Hence the keyless chart for a transposing instrument
would need to be transposed as it normally would with every single
accidental expressly marked. I really don't understand how this is
different from writing the entire piece with the key signature of C.

Boy, am I glad I don't work with music that is so atonal as to require
this. I have enough trouble with pieces that change the key for a few
measures without changing the key sig. grin

Working with Finale has caused me to learn more music theory than I
thought I would ever need. not so funny either

Hi John, for instance: With a Bb trumpet or clarinet, the part is
transposed up a major second from concert pitch - so if the concert key of a
piece is Eb, the trumpet and clarinet part will be transposed to F. This
doesn't change if you're working without a key sig. - the part still has to
be transposed up M2 from concert. If a keyless score has an E with a flat
accidental, the part will show an F with no accidental.

Whether you're working on a keyless score or one with a key sig., unless
you're really used to working with transposing instruments it's safest to
enter all the notes in concert pitch and then add the transpostions later
and let Finale work out the accidentals for you.

  Hi,

I'm currently transcribing a piece which includes lots of
semiquavers/demi-semiquavers (don't know what that is in American).

Using speedy entry, as I type in the notes they all scrunch together so
  that I can't read what I'm writing.

Is there any way I can stop this happening as I type as opposed to hitting
update layout at the end of every bar (which doesn't solve the problem of
individual bars being illegible as I type anyway).

  Cheers,

[Finale] DS al Fin

2014-02-23 Thread John Witmer
How do you make a Finale playback actually stop at the Fine in a DS al Fin with
an embedded repeat?
Finale wants to keep right on playing after the going back to the signe and
getting to the Fine.

It works fine for mea few hints:

Do not scan the music in a scanner and then try to convert it.

Open Finale and scan from within Finale

Also, only a very few scanners actually work. A very very few.

I use an Epson V33 and have no trouble scanning well engraved music.

 Hope this helps,

[Finale] editing chord symbols enharmonically

2013-11-28 Thread John Witmer
Sorry if this message is a repeat; I got lost in the ether.

In editing Christmas music for amateur singers (and pianists), I have to
transpose many
songs to fit the range of elder singers. In some keys this produces results
such as double flats
that are difficult for many amateurs to read. Even though the double flats are
technically correct,
is there some way to keep (or change) the chord symbols to their enharmonic
equivalent?
I use Finale '12.

Re: [Finale] random thoughts on 2014

2013-11-20 Thread John Witmer
Larry, I agree.
The only exception is when the music is especially busy with lots of
notes. The parentheses
often make it difficult to read on the fly. Then you have the decision to
make as to whether the
unnecessary accidental hurts more than it helps. It is sometimes a very
close call.

I have to disagree here. I use courtesy accidentals in my
arrangements for a couple of reasons:

 1. my players like and often request them
 2. I like to hear the correct notes being played rightthe first time.

 Larry

Courtesy accidentals (ANYWHERE) are for the weak. If you *need* them in
the
part, then that means you're not following the key signature. Back to
school!

If you will permit a somewhat differing opinion, I think there are places
where cautionaries are necessary, even when there isn't a key change, and
I
have figured out after many years that NON-parenthesised ones actually are
easier to read.

I know that parentheses make logical sense, that a parenthesised
accidental
is kind of like saying, I KNOW you know this, but here's a reminder to
differentiate it from one that is absolutely necessary. But from a
distance,
parentheses around an accidental makes all three (sharp, flat, and
natural)
into the same outline, so you have to read more closely to see which
accidental it actually is. Already, sharps and naturals are easy to
confuse
with each other; the parentheses make it worse. I keep getting caught by
these on the gigs I do where the Finale user is less than professional.
And
Sibelius seems to have this redundant accidental default that puts in
accidentals on the SECOND of two tied notes!

And people who pencil in unnecessary accidentals BESIDE notes in the
music should also be shot. If one needs a reminder about a note, write
the accidental ABOVE the note, with a parenthesis and there will never
be any confusion. IMHO, the only time an accidental should be penciled
BESIDE a note is when correcting a misprint.

Re: [Finale] Mark Johnson's Finale 2014: A Trailblazer Guide -- a bookworth considering!

2013-11-06 Thread John Witmer
Hey David,
With your suggestion, I sat down with Mark's opus (Finale 2012 A Trailblazer
Guide) in hand
to learn how to use the Score Manager.
There is no item in the table of contents about the SM so I looked in the
index.
There are 3 citations there, but they only talk about the SM to solve some
very specific tasks.
I wish there was a comprehensive chapter on the Score Manager.
It is such a new concept for Finale
that it deserves a more thorough treatment.
Finale remains very much a teach yourself program!

Remember when Finale came with real, printed manuals? Don't you wish it
 still did?

I just wanted to point out that people who are upgrading to Finale 2014
or purchasing Finale for the first time might want to purchase Mark
Johnson's Finale 2014: A Trailblazer Guide to assist with the upgrade.
Mark has been publishing these books for the past few upgrades and I
have found them immensely helpful in navigating around the pitfalls of
 each new upgrade.

Notable potential pitfalls are the ScoreManager (still -- many people
haven't gotten used to how this works compared to the older Instrument
List dialog) and the newly redesigned percussion dialog.

These books are great for new users as well as long-time users who may
have gotten entrenched in older workflows which have changed with these
newer versions. It's especially helpful for people who haven't upgraded
 for a long time.

You can order it from MakeMusic when you order your upgrade (or
separately) or you can order it from amazon.

[Disclaimer: Mark is a friend and he's using a quote from me on the
cover, but other than that I have no business association with the sale
of this book and don't make any money from the sale of the book, so this
really is a friendly suggestion and not a ploy for me to earn money.]

Re: [Finale] I notice that there is still no Finale update

2013-09-05 Thread John Witmer
Craig,
My experience with Finale is that you can skip a year or two of upgrades
without
losing very much. Every once in a while, there is a feature that everyone
talks
about that becomes a must have, but not very often. I did wait from '07 to
'12 for my latest update and don't feel that I've missed very much other
than a
little bit of a 'learning curve' with the new version. But that seems to
happen anyway.

Makemusic said they would have a new release in 2013.

The normal pattern would be to announce new releases in May or June so
as to get into the pipeline for the new school year. That did not happen.

Another normal pattern is to not announce anything during August because
much of the world is on vacation. August has come and gone.

Yet another normal rule would be to get any new product on the streets
by October 1 at the latest in order to catch anybody wanting to give an
upgrade as a holiday gift. If that is to happen, we should see an
announcement in the next 3 weeks. It seems a little surprising that
there are no rumblings at all about this. Has everybody just given up?

Or is a case that something won't be announced until December 31, 2013
 for delivery in May 2014?

I have a list of about 7 software products I use a lot that should have
new releases before year end. If I were to upgrade all of them, that
would probably be about $2500 and in fact I will probably only spend
about $1000. At some point, secrecy can be taken too far. If I spend
my budget before MM decides to say anything, then I probably won't
 upgrade Finale very soon.

Re: [Finale] Various problems with 2012c Win

2013-08-21 Thread John Witmer
Hey Dan,
I had similar problems with Finale '07 creating multiple simultaneous
playbacks.
I don't remember exactly what I had to do to fix it, but it had something to
do with
defining the instruments for playback. I use a MIDI playback and not the
VST.
I have not had this problem since I upgraded to ver. '12
I do find that Score Manager is very difficult to work with.

Subject: [Finale] Various problems with 2012c Win

 Hi again folks,

I have been a member of this list earlier but I had to leave since my
mailbox grew over it limits all the time. Recently tried the
forum.makemusic.com but to my surprise, noone there knows the answer to my
 questions. Strange.

Anyhow, since I left I have been working quite a lot with Finale 2010 and
with great success, actually I have found the answer to my questions in
help files and similar. Some time ago my fine old computer died and had to
be replaced with the one I am writing on now, a young and fresh Win 8
machine with 8 GB RAM. At the same time I took the opportunity to upgrade
 to Finale 2012.

But there are some problems. The biggest problem relates to playback. I
have a weird problem that multiple locations of the same score is playing
back simultaneously creating...well you can imagine. The behaviour is
consistent in the sense that it happens also after reboots, i. e. at all
working sessions. It is however inconsistent in that it behaves slightly
different at different sessions (e. g. the problems start at different
points in the score and different other parts are playing back at that
 time). What about this?

Two other less severe problems but annoying:

Everytime I start Finale 2012c it complains about files with extension
.asv and that Photoshop has registered it, and a question on whether I
want to register with Finale instead. Answering Yes does not fix the
problem, No obviously not either, and the message box comes back at next
start for both choices even if the checkbox Don't ask me again is
checked. Also I have of course changed this association via Windows
 Control
Panel and it is now persistently registered with Finale, yet Finale
stubbornly gives this error message at every start.

The other annoying problem is a complaint when starting playback (yes I
have thought about this being related to the main playback problem above
and I guess this can't be excluded): Finale complains about Missing VST
Instrument Plug-in: Instruments for Finale Some sound used in this
 document
are not available on your computer. Would you like Finale to reassign all
instruments in this document to sounds available on your computer? (Your
file will be changed.). I have accepted this offer and saved the
 supposedly
changed file, but the error message keeps coming back anyway. I have also
gone through the new ScoreManager and can't see anything suspicious there.
What should I look for? Or is this problem not related to the settings in
 the Score Manager?

Sorry for a long text, but I hope someone here could help me as opposed to
 in the makemusic forum.

 Regards,
 /DT
