Re: [Finale] Human Playback Sorcery

2019-09-10 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel
That has been the case for a while already!

I combine different movements into one wave file and have the playback from
there, rather than the score (which is a PDF file).

Re: [Finale] Dynamics & Arco/Pizz. Playback Problems in Large File

2019-07-13 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel
Large files start to mess up the playback after a certain critical point. I am
forced to keep the movements separate when creating wave files.

Sometimes it helps to create invisible “human playback on” and “off”.

Re: [Finale] Parts to pdf

2019-06-08 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel
Finale Win pdf export is buggy.

Download and install (free) Bullzip printer. In Finale click Print, choose
Bullzip as your printer and it will create Pdf file, which you can save in the
same folder.

I then create the cover and inside cover pages, place them and the saved file
in the Pdf Binder and create the complete part or score.

Good luck!

I’m away from Finale at the moment, but there’s a check box in the score
manager that’s checked by default to do this. I think you can simply un- check
it and get the result you want.

Tuplet Brackets

Document Options->Tuplets
Select "Always Use Specified Shape"

Grace Note Spacing

Document Options->Music Spacing
Select Grace Note Spacing Keep Current.
Also consider turning off Automatic Music Spacing in Preferences->Edit

Note-Attached Glissandos
Use "Tab-Slide Tool" instead of "Line Tool"
You can control line thickness and endpoint spacing relative to noteheads
as follows:
Line thickness is in Smart Shape->Smartshape Options
Endpoint positioning is in Smart Shape->Smart Shape Placement. (Choose "Tab
Slide" from the pulldown menu.)

All of these are document-level options, so I set them in my template file
to get them in any new project.

[Finale] SOME IRRITATING BEHAVIORS

2019-01-21 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel
I wonder if anyone would have some suggestions regarding the following
behaviours:

Win10 Fin26.0.1.655

Document preferences->Tuplets set to show number and bracket. The same in
Tuplets definition submenu. The bracket does NOT show up, unless the group is
broken into smaller chunks.

There are lots of glissandos in the score. If using the line in Smart Shapes,
it is often invisible, and does not remain attached to the notes it is supposed
to connect. If using the wiggly (“bend”) shape, it is much better visually, but
even harder to place properly, as it even reverts to vertical if the space
between the notes is smaller.

These glissandos often go to a grace note. It would be desirable to have a bit
more space to show the glissando. Moving the notes manually is useless, as the
notes will jump back together the moment the next bar is clicked on.

Placing a dot on the note at the end of a slur moves the slur above the dot,
which is not wanted. It takes a lot of fiddling to place the slur back where it
belongs, and often it will revert to the other setting on its own.

I know it all sounds like pretty small stuff, but multiplied by over 40 staves
it all adds up to becoming a major irritation! Thank you in advance for your
help.

This is the stupidest thing MakeMusic ever added as a “feature”. I can’t

I would never touch the Ossia tool. It is a holdover from an earlier version of
the Matrix, and is very difficult to kill.

A better way is to add another staff to your part, resize it if you want to,
and use the Force Hide and Collapse staff style on it everywhere that you don’t
need it. At this this method works consistently in a foreseeable fashion,
unlike the Ossia Tool.

Fin26. Win10.

In a string quartet there are occasional two and three bar segments with both
left hand pizz. and arco stuff mixed together and written with stems up and
down – rather difficult to read.

I have tried to separate the two, placing the pizz. layer into the ossia bars.
It copies everything from the “source” bar. Is it possible to have different
materials in the ossia bar? Also, is it possible to create 2 and 3-bar long
ossias? Is there a better way to accomplish this?

Re: [Finale] MID-MEASURE CLEF

2018-08-07 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel
Thank you! That does it.

So, now there is the treble clef were it needs to be. And Finale adds bass
clefs in front and behind it. The one behind it comes with a handle, and can be
removed and one in front can not. Clearly, something is totally messed up with
the Clef Tool.

It is just this pitchwheel adjustment that I will need for playback, as each of

Re: [Finale] VVOT: translation from Hebrew

2017-03-06 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel
Hello Barbara;

There are a number of free online Hebrew prayer books, with Hebrew and
translation into English. (See, for example, http://app.chailifeline.org/full/
  or
http://www.chabad.org/library/siddur/default_cdo/aid/1495868/jewish/Siddur.htm#!/aid:2349532/title:%D7%9E%D7%95%D6%B9%D7%93%D6%B6%D7%94%20%D7%90%D6%B2%D7%A0%D6%B4%D7%99%20-%20Morning%20Blessings

However, problems with transliterations are many; often they come from the
"dialect" pronunciation of - say - Ashkenazic (Central and Eastern European
Jews), which are different than "proper" Israeli Hebrew. You can always try
pasting a particular text into your browser's search box, but tracing a Hebrew
text back from its transliteration may often be difficult or impossible.

A friend with even basic knowledge of Hebrew prayers (or a quick online course
for yourself) would be your best solution.

What she means is that instead of writing triplet 8ths on the same
pitch, using the old-fashioned shorthand of writing a dotted quarter and
putting a slash through the stem to indicate the playing of an
equivalent number of 8th notes.

I don't know how to do it to achieve accurate playback, but I know what
she wants.

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions.

Robert's suggestion re beaming over the grace notes indeed works! Me bad - was
missing the additional click on the grace note itself.

However, slashed dotted quarters as triplets are just not worth the time and
effort. So, endless repeated triplets they will become. The "old-fashioned"
shorthand way of marking them was actually cleaner and easier to read in both
score and parts. Oh, well...

Shouldn't there be an "I - know- what - I - am - doing, so - do - not -
interfere" mode of input as well?

Re: [Finale] PDF EXPORT missing fonts

2015-10-21 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel
A big thank you to all who have responded to my post. I shall certainly follow
up on their suggestions.

In the meantime it appears that only some Finale files have this problem, while
the others export just fine! I have no idea how those are different than the
others.

The quickest solution - as these are rather small scores - will be to just scan
and save as PDF's. And than to continue investigating...

Thank you all!

[Finale] PDF EXPORT missing fonts

2015-10-20 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel
O the Knowledgeable ones!

I have never before encountered this one:

Fin2012 Win10

When I export Finale score as PDF, I get the following message
The following fonts are used in this document but are not currently
available. They will be replaced by system fonts.

Engraver Font Set
Engraver Text T
Engraver Font Extras

And the PDF doc is of course total gibberish. The fonts are all sitting nicely
in the Fonts folder, as they are supposed too. Reboot did nothing.

Please help!

a project to make a video of trombone section parts from the Wagner Ring

colleagues [actually my trombone students] complain about illegible parts.
Finale [WinFin2014] has packed measures very close [TOO close] and the only
way I have found to clean it up has been to set Finale to Speedy Entry
and go through large sections of the parts and finish by putting the cursor
away from the staff. It is workable but time-consuming and kludgy. Any
ideas how I can clean things up a bit more elegantly?

One finger per string. With a bit of preparation time I reckon I could
pluck all four strings of my upright bass pretty close to
simultaneously. Strummed in quick succession is probably more usual on
the higher instruments on which four-part pizzicato chords sound OK,
which they don't, to my ear, on the bass, because in that register it's
not possible to finger a chord that is sufficiently spread.
I'm curious about this -- is it
the speed of the arpeggiating in Finale's playback that you dislike? What
would you rather hear from a solo string playback?

Well, I am a violinist, so I should know this one:
one flicks his pointer finger from across the strings and - voila'!
Like Debussy Quartet, 2nd movement, for example.

And Finale would start it an eight or so earlier and merrily roll it into the
downbeat :-(

If you mean a double accidental on, say, a unison C# that appears in both
layers, that's the way Fin2012 is designed (incorrectly) to work. The
workaround is to hide the accidental in one of the layers -- and making sure
it still shows up in the part. This feature -- ok, bug -- was not present
in earlier versions, which correctly made the unison accidentals coincident.
I think I remember reading that this has been corrected in Fin2014.

If you mean a double accidental on non-unison notes, I don't have a clue.

Thanks. But doesn't this refer to a general feature of the whole score?
In my case, it only applies to some of the wind instruments.

Is there a way to globally adjust the volumes of these independently, to get an

Thank you David and Raymond;

Now I know the (ugly) truth! For a half-decent playback I just may have to copy
onto additional staves the arco material that needs to be heard through the
pizz. fireworks :-(

Subject: Re: [Finale] arco vs.pizz dynamics (repeated question)

I believe the problem lies in the fact that the two different sample
sets were not recorded at the same volume level. Apparently the
pizzicatos were recorded much louder than the arcos, so at the same
indicated dynamic level in your score they won't sound at the same volume.

This is my biggest gripe about all the sample sets I've listened to (and
most that I've purchased, alas!) -- the designers of the sample sets
don't take the extra time to ensure that all the samples which pertain
to the same instrument sound at the same volume level when played by a
midi program at the same dynamic level.

One solution is horribly painful in Finale -- it requires you to dig
into the midi editing capabilities (sort of like watching sausage being
made -- it's ugly, it's messy and it will turn you off ever wanting to
do it again) and adjust the velocity and/or the volume for each note
that you are unhappy with what you're hearing.

One would think that it would be simpler than that, but it's not, from
 my experience.

And I think the reason you received no responses to your first query is
that nobody has an answer for you -- at least not one that's easy to
accomplish and won't take many hours/days to get things right with.

I hope I'm wrong, but Raymond's reply indicates I may not be. I gave up
worrying about such things long ago -- what's left of my sanity was too
 valuable to me. :-)

 Good luck!

It works fine for mea few hints:

Do not scan the music in a scanner and then try to convert it.

Open Finale and scan from within Finale

Also, only a very few scanners actually work. A very very few.

I use an Epson V33 and have no trouble scanning well engraved music.

No it's not possible. You need to use a file converter to convert the wav

Make sure all your files have an .mus extension (I use Renamer4Mac, a
shareware program, that does this in bulk), and make sure you have the same
fonts. If you only use the stock Finale fonts, there will never be a problem.
Otherwise, you might have to run the font check routine. But only do this if
things don't show up properly. No use giving yourself useless work.

I have never done an ossia in Finale before, let alone 2011. I followed
the instructions, adding a scratch staff, marking my source measures, etc.
However, in the process to hide the scratch system, it also hid the ossia
itself! Does anyone know how to work around this issue?

Subject: [Finale] Romanian diacriticals in Finale

I am putting titles into a piece in Romanian (Bartok's Romanian Folk
Dances), and I am having trouble finding some of the proper
characters, which mostly seem to be Unicode.

I have found the capital A with a caret (circumflex) over it no problem

 II. BRÂUL

but I need a capital A with the caret inverted (Character Palette
calls it a caron), and a T with a cedilla (comma below in
Character Palette) in another title. This is the title missing the
 diacriticals:

 VI. MARUNTEL

Here are the characters, which I can easily insert into my Mail
 program which supports Unicode!

 ȚǍ

I would be happy to substitute another serif bold (or sans!) font for
my Times New Roman if it had the diacriticals. Character Palette on
my Mac wasn't much help, as all the characters I need are only
available in Unicode, which is unsupported in Finale.

 Thanks for your support.

RE: [Finale] slashed notation

2010-02-10 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel

I rarely have to deal with chord-and-slash notation, and am confused in this
case:

PC, Fin2010
3/4 time: quarter rest, quarter note A with the chord symbol, slash on the 3rd
beat, and similarly through the whole piece.

I can get all slashed beats with no rests and no noteheads, OR
rhythmic notation with an X instead of the notehead and VERTICAL stem, OR
(the best version, but hard to read) normal rest, normal note with chord symbol
and VERTICAL stem without the notehead.

Isn't there an easy way to get an angled slash on the third beat?

RE: [Finale] slashed notation

2010-02-10 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel

I am trying to understand what you are trying to do, and if you want
the same chord to be played on beats 2 and 3 (oom-pah-pah) then the
standard way is to indicate BOTH beats 2 and 3 with Rhythmic
Notation. What you described will induce a guitarist (for example) to
play an A note on beat 2 and a chord on beat 3. If that is what you
want, you should only put the chord symbol over the 3rd beat slash,
not over the 2nd beat note.

I agree. This is a klezmer arrangement, and I suspect that this way guitar,
bass, trombone and whatever else read from the same part and can see the bass
note.

Selecting partial measures seems to be the way. Thanks.

I didn't quite get everything you said above, but the standard way of
getting stemmed slashes is to select the passage of normal notes
using the Staff Tool and hit R (the metatool for Rhythmic Notation.)
You can select partial measures, but it isn't necessary if the only
thing you want is stemmed slashes and rests.

You can right-click the blue bar over the staff that appears after
putting in a Staff Style and edit the staff style so the stems go up
instead of down, if you want. Stems down is standard, because they
won't interfere with anything above the staff like chord symbols.

Stemless slashes would be metatool S for Slash Notation.

[Finale] Phantom slurs

2008-08-31 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel

Dear collective wisdom;

Fin05, XP. I am extracting parts from an arrangement. There are phantom slurs
all over them in the most unlikely places, without handles no matter to which
voice (layer) I switch. They are NOT visible in the Scroll View.

In desperation I went back to the score and removed every slur that I could
find, but when the parts are extracted exactly the same phantom slurs are back
in place. Selecting ALL and removing items (slurs attached to notes, note
articulations, expressions etc.) does nothing to alleviate the problem. Please
help!

Playing back one of my scores (which is to be presented to an artist interested
in a European premiere performance), I am running into the situation were all
pizzicato passages are 10 times as loud as the surrounding materials. Sound
like a banjo ensemble high on Viagra!

Going through the whole score with the MIDI Tool and adjusting along the way
would be impossible at this stage. Is there a way of globally adjusting the
pizzicato playback volume, please?

Sorry, I did forget to give this basic information. I am on a PC, all documents

any problem previously. I currently have Fin08 and Fin02 installed on my

reopened a few years back, edited a bit and saved with some later version(s).

Any help would be most appreciated, as I do not have the time and/or strength

I have attempted to open a folder of older files without any success. Even
after re-installing Finale 2002 and trying to open the files with it, I am

[Finale] invisible graphic notation

2007-10-18 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel

Dear friends;

Re: [Finale] Eyeglasses?

2006-09-14 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel

I might add my own experience whenreplacing a violinist colleague at the last moment for a choral concert with a well-known choral (and not-so-great orchestral) conductor.
At one really tricky point I found pencilled in my part a pair of eyeglasses in a circle with a diagonal line over it (i.e. "don't look!"). I did make the mistake of looking up and found the conductor furiously attempting to confuse everybody, and my colleagues all carefully watching their belly buttons withwise smirks on their faces. The warning was, actually, invaluable.

Re: [Finale] Audio file quirks?

2006-06-09 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel

The original Finale file played perfectly. I have savedit as an audio file. I have then played the file back using Winamp and MS Media Player. In eitherversionone staff did not play back.
I went back and added two more staves and copied the original inaudible staff onto them, and saved as audio file again. The newly saved file would still not play back that same line.
Finally, being in a hurry, I did burn a CD with that file and have discovered that it did play back as well as the original Finale file.

The file plays back everything when burned toCD, but is missing one staff when played back using Winamp or MSMediaPlayer? That can't be right. The file is a stereo audio file - the playercan't strip out individual tracks that are embedded. My only suggestion is that perhaps the instrument in question ispanned sharply to the left or to the right, and the right or leftchannel is not playing back, perhaps because of a bad cable orconnection. That would make it a hardware issue, not a software

A big thank you to all who responded to my questions. I agree that Finale should provide for slashed beamed grace notes.
While I have used bothgraphic _expression_ and Smart Shape Tool versions, as suggested, for most occasions _expression_ Toolright or left slash (TNR 36 - 48 points) seemed to work just fine.

[Finale] Urgent advice needed

2005-09-02 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel

Dear colleagues;
FinWin2005. I am struggling to complete a score, and need some help from you:
There is a sudden change in the staff spacing, size of noteheads and a general look of the scorefrom the page 16 and on, and nothing I have tried changing has made much of the difference. I am sure itmust be possible to copy the format of one of the previous pages onto the rest of the score for a uniform look, but I can't figure out how to do it.
Also, I have asked some time ago and have never received a single answer: is it possible to globally slash grouped grace notes, similarly to what is available at OptionsDocument OptionsGrace NotesAlways Slash Flagged Grace Notes?
I would be deeply grateful for any help offered.

[Finale] Grace notes spacing problem

2005-08-27 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel

FinWin2005. I am completing a score that includes a busy solo harp part. The grace note groupings that precede the downbeats are with "beat spacing" and "note spacing" pushed an inch ahead of the downbeat, ahead of the system and over the clefs; the "time signature spacing" is almost acceptable, with the bar spaced almost reasonably, except that the grace notes are over the clef. This could be adjusted manually, if need be, but in the measure tool the bottom square is not shown, and - therefore - the beat "handles" are not possible to see and adjust. Any suggestions from our esteemed group of experts?
Also, in OptionsProgram OptionsGrace Notes there is a possibility to check for "Always Slash Flagged Grace Notes". Is there a possibility to "always slash grouped grace notes" as well?
TIA for your help.

[Finale] Feathered beams etc.

2005-08-14 Thread dr.a.s. weinstangel
If one creates feathered beams according to the Manual (Finale 2005), i.e. inputs notes as the smallest note value and with special tools angles the beams as needed, there are leftover rests in the bar. Making them invisible still leaves the playback, the lineup etc. all messed up. Is there a better way?

Also,is it possible to reduce the size of icons in the pallettes, in order to take less space along the margins of the screen?

Much obliged for any suggestions.

I was under the impression that Subdominant was a chord at the same distance from below the Tonic as the Dominant was above the Tonic, i.e.
SD(perfect fifth)--- T -(perfect fifth)-D
Was I tought erroneously?

context, (or H H H in two 3/4 measures). In 3/2, the hemiola is overlaying a 3/1 measure over top of two 3/2measures.I think "hemiola" is one of those terms which has gone beyond its traditional meaning, to mean any 3 against 2 OR 2 against 3 counter accent in our modern times.Other terms that I think have moved on in a similar fashion:Subdominant (used to mean the 4th of the scale, or the chord built on it. Now means ANY chord that can lead to a dominant (though it doesn't invariably have to). Some of my colleagues have replaced this term with "Predominant" to be more clear. But what if it doesn't go to the dominant, but directly to the tonic? Is it still a "predominant"? If not, then why have a different name for the same chord
in the same key?Modal - had a big discussion about this one last year on the list. Doesn't mean now what it used to mean a couple of centuries ago. Of course leads toTonal - which might be one of those words that can't be used any more in ANY context except historical, because of all the different ways it is construedPicardy third (now often applied to ANY major-quality resolution chord where a minor one is expected in the key, wrongly or not)Toncisation (used to mean only with a secondary dominant, now can mean articulating a temporary tonic by any applicable means) (on that subject, what do you call a plagal resolution to a temporary tonic? A "plagalisation"? I shudder at it, but it IS logical. Musicians who play gospel (where it is most common) call
it "backcycling", but that is a bit obtuse IMHO. Drawing on "applied dominant" perhaps "applied predominant"? Not clear. Applied how?)All of these expanded uses came about because we needed to talk about them, but didn't have a brand-new term, so we used an old term that did something similar, but restricted, in an older context. I even hear some jazz musicians (mostly bass players) talk about "musica ficta" in a jazz context, meaning that they use sharper notes walking up to a target and flatter notes moving down to a target; a great departure from the raised 4th and lowered 7th the term used to refer to.This points up a need for a jazz theorist's convention, where we could all talk to one another and come up with proper terms for all this stuff, but not so far removed
from the common classical terminology that nobody outside of jazz knows what we are talking about. I am insistent with my students that they make the connections between what they learned in their classical theory courses and how it applies to their jazz performance, composition, and arranging. It IS mostly the same as classical, after all, just expanded a bit more in places, and with a few different idiosyncracies. It seems that every jazz school has its OWN way of describing things, and often there are huge holes in the analysis and terminology.Comments? (no swearing please.) Helpful hints?
