[Finale] Closing group barline at the end of a system & Text bloc

2006-10-24 Thread Minke Hylarides
Dear Finale-colleagues,

at this moment I have two questions:

1.) Is it possible to close a group barline only at the END of each system?
I've looked in the Help, and the only way I found was to insert a "false"
barline, which means I have to draw lines on all 180 pages (that makes. how
many systems?!) for closing the group.

So my question: is there a better way?!?

2.) Is it possible to place a text bloc VERTICALLY on a page? The only way I
can think of is making a tiff-file (already vertical) and place that on the
page. But is there a way to do this directly with Finale?

I would be very glad if you could answer these questions!

By the way, I'm working with Finale 2005 (Win - if it matters)

Thanks,

Minke

Document options, Barlines.
Check "Close barlines at end of each system"

Do you mean rotated text?

While this is hard to do, there is one little tool in Finale that
allows this - the custom line tool.

Select the Smart shape tool, go into Smart Shape Menu, select Smart
Shape Options.

Select Smart Lines: Custom Line and hit Edit.

In the Smart Line selection box, click Create.

Line Thickness zero, then click Text>Center Full: Edit.

Enter the text you want rotated (like "Chorus")

OK your way back to the score. When you select the Custom line (looks
like a question mark) and double click and drag to enter it, you will
have freely rotating text! You only have 180 degrees to rotate it in,
(actually, only 179) but this is usually sufficient.

2006-10-24 Thread Michael Cook
Christopher Smith described the method with the custom line tool. But
there's another way, by making the text into a "custom arrowhead",
which permits 360° rotation:

- Use the Expression tool and go through the usual steps to get to
the Shape Designer.

- Draw a line, then select it.
- Choose "Arrowheads..." in the Shape Designer menu.
- Choose "Custom" next to "End" and click on create.
- Another Shape Designer window opens where you can create the custom
arrowhead. Here you type in the text block, choosing font and making
carriage returns as needed.
- Once you've typed in the text, OK the dialogs to get back to the
original Shape Designer window. There will be a line with your text
at the end of it.
- Rotate the line until the text is going in the direction you want
it to, then give the line zero thickness so it no longer shows up.
- You now have a shape expression containing vertical text which can
be placed anywhere in the score.

Depends upon how long the text block is. For a lengthy text block,
creating and importing a graphic may be the only way, but a one work
around for a short text block is to define it as a smart shape. Select
the smart shape, and on the smart shape palette, open the shape designer
by pressing CTRL while you click on the custom smart shape tool (the
line with the question mark over it). In the top left corner of the
box, set the line style to solid, and the thickness of the line to 0.
Choose one of the options in the bottom panel of the window, labeled
"text", and enter the text you want to display vertically. If you do
not select the "keep horizontal" option in the top left frame, you will
be able to apply this shape as a measure attached vertical "text shape".
If the text you want to enter needs to be entered as two or more lines,
I suspect you will have to create each line as a separate smart shape,
and place each individually; the smart shape labels do not support
embedded carriage returns or line feeds.

I don't presently have 2k5 installed, but this works in both 2k, and 2k6.

Thanks Michael, it works!

But the answer from Rafael about closing barlines was not what I meant: I
meant closing just the GROUP barline at the end of the system, not of the
entire orchestra.
Is there anyone who knows this?

Thanks for now,
Minke

NB: Barbara, I will call you!

Re: [Finale] Closing group barline at the end of a system & Text bloc

2006-10-25 Thread Michael Cook
You want group barlines only at the end of each system? I can't think
of a way to get that done automatically, but here's a method that
might be faster than drawing them by hand:

- Set the group to have barlines drawn through staves. Now of course
you have many barlines where you don't want them, but they are easy
to get rid of:
- Create a staff style called "break barlines" with the attribute
"Break Barlines Between Staves" checked.
- Define a Metatool for the staff style (just to make things faster,
since you're going to apply the style many, many times!).
- Apply the style where needed. On each system you'll just need to
drag-select all the measures in the group apart from the last one,
and then press the metatool.
