Yes, Alex found it odd, too. You could run fink-virtual-pkgs and
then look at the paragraph talking about system-xfree86-dev, in
particular the provides line. Mine says

provides: x11-dev, libgl-dev, xft2-dev, fontconfig1-dev
Yours certainly doesn't say x11-dev, but it would be interesting
to see which one of the others is there.
Package: system-xfree86-dev
Status: install ok installed
Version: 2:4.3-2
provides: x11-dev, libgl-dev, xft2-dev, fontconfig1-dev
description: [placeholder for user installed x11 development tools]
builddependsonly: true
(but now I have installed X11 SDK)
Is the case closed or do you need some more information? After all
your efforts I would be very pleased to maybe help you to find a
bug:-)

[Fink-beginners] offline-update with PB G3 and eMac G4

2004-07-27 Thread Markus Kamp
Hi, List!
Here's my question:
I own both a PowerBook G3 (Pismo) and an eMac (1st Rev., G4-700)
My only access to the internet is a WLAN Hotspot on the campus, where I
log in with the Pismo.
I am using Fink on both Machines, the fink installation on the eMac was
not updated since i moved.

For the future, I am planning to use the same fink packages on Pismo
and eMac by simply rsyncing the /sw Folders from Pismo to eMac.
Does this work or should I take another approach?
Since I am using some source packages I am wondering if the packages
are compiled specifically for G3 or G4, depending on which Processor
fink is run.

 Thanks, Markus

As you can see, it add 'dists' into the path. I can't get apt-get to
not add 'dists' into the path.

Yes, that's what it does. You need to adapt your file layout so that
it takes this into account. On a standard Fink system, in /sw/fink you
have dists as a symlink to 10.3 (or to 10.2-gcc3.3 if you are on OSX
10.2), that is, /sw/fink/dists is the same as /sw/fink/10.3. The
sources.list line then has

deb file:/sw/fink stable main crypto
If you really want to keep both your sources.list line and your file
layout, make an additional symlink inside fink/10.3 so that 10.3/dists
and 10.3 become identical:

  sudo ln -s . xxx/mirror/fink/10.3/dists
Don't forget to run fink scanpackages afterwards.

snip Nope. fink scanpackages creates and updates a list of your
locally built binary packages. apt-get update updates the list of
available packages using all sources (local and remote)

You can install this package by hand using dpkg:
sudo dpkg -i ./mirror/[and so on]/net/mutt_1.4i-21_darwin-powerpc.deb
apt-get should find it, however, if you give it the right sources.list

idea why.

One issue. Some packages have an affect on the system so this method is

be relatively short. The one I know for sure is passwd.
But this can be easily dealt with by doing a reinstall. { Example: fink

I've had good success using a technique explained by Benjamin Reed on his blog:
http://ranger.befunk.com/blog/archives/000258.html
Text of the blog entry:
Sharing the Fink
I was recently asked how to share software between more than one fink
installation. This is usually because the person has 2 (or more)
machines, only one of which is fast. =) It's pretty easy to share
binaries you've built on one system with another. Here's how (keep in
mind these instructions will generally only work if each system is
running the same major version of Mac OS X):

Install Fink on the master (build) system.
(If the clients already have fink installed, you can skip this
step.) Copy /sw to the client systems. First you must enable
Remote Login on the master box. Then, run the following on each
of the client machines:

sudo rsync -avzr -e ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/sw/ /sw/
Just replace [EMAIL PROTECTED] above with the username and hostname of
the system to copy from.

This will make a clone of the fink installation on your master box
on each of the clients.

On the master box, build something, and then run
fink scanpackages. This will make fink generate apt indexes for all
of your enabled trees.

On the master box, enable Personal Web Sharing in the Sharing
section of System Preferences, and then set up httpd to expose your
/sw/fink directory externally. I do so by making an
/etc/httpd/users/fink.conf file that contains:

Alias /fink /sw/fink
Directory /sw/fink
  Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
/Directory
...and then run sudo /usr/sbin/apachectl graceful to (re)start.
On the client box(es), edit /sw/etc/apt/sources.list, and add the
lines representing your fink trees. For example, if my IP address of
my build box at home is 192.168.42.7, the client would add:

deb http://192.168.42.7/fink stable main crypto
deb http://192.168.42.7/fink unstable main crypto
deb http://192.168.42.7/fink local main
On the client box(es), run sudo apt-get update. If all goes
well, you should see something like:

Hit http://192.168.42.7 stable/main Packages
Hit http://192.168.42.7 stable/main Release
Hit http://192.168.42.7 stable/crypto Packages ...and so on
You should then be able to do sudo apt-get install package for
anything that's been built on the master box. Any time you build
more stuff there, you will need to re-run fink scanpackages on the
master, and sudo apt-get update on the client(s).

===
I use this technique to build unstable packages on my G4 Dual, and
then update two laptops from the G4.

Kevin Horton
