[Fink-devel] MatchPackageRegEx

2003-11-20 Thread Ben Hines
Cool feature, but i don't like the name of the setting... it is
confusing. "Will match?" then do what? Ignore those, or choose those?
:) (i presume choose)

How about something like DefaultPackageMatch:

Newbies who don't know what a regex is can just put ssl there, and it
will all make sense and be more clear IMO.

[Fink-devel] Fink::FinkVersion dependency fixed

2003-11-20 Thread Michael G Schwern
I've changed the test target so that setup.sh will be run before the tests.
It uses t/basepath as the basepath. This should make available for testing
all the programs and libraries in fink and allows one to run the tests
without having fink previously installed. Fink::FinkVersion is now generated.

I thought I posted about this last week, but the message doesn't seem to
have made it.

There's only two variables used in Fink::FinkVersion that requires it to be
generated. @BASEPATH@ and @[EMAIL PROTECTED] @VERSION@ comes from the VERSION file
but can't it get @BASEPATH@ from Fink::Config like everything else? In fact
that seems more robust since now it will properly honor your basepath in
fink.conf.

Fink::Config doesn't use Fink::FinkVersion so I don't think there's any
dependency loop to worry about.

Once that's eliminated we can put the little @VERSION@ replacement line into
the Makefile easy enough and make sure Fink::FinkVersion is generated
before the tests are run.

I'll work on that now.

Ok, now we're getitng somewhere. What those two tests have in common
is they both involve being root and then dropping privledges by switching to
user "nobody". I hard coded in uid -2 which is what nobody is on my
machine, but it could be wrong for you. Could you check /etc/passwd
and see what uid nobody has? Also unknown.

Meanwhile, let me try to make that test not assume nobody is -2. It'll
check getpwnam() to find an unprivledged user. Try the new version.

And by the way, apparently the reason you're not seeing the other errors
I saw (and reported here today, albeit belatedly), is that you ran "make
test" as an ordinary user and the dubious tests were skipped, whereas
I ran "sudo make test" (thus mimicking the behavior of fink when it
installs the fink package manager).

Re: [Fink-devel] Failed make test

2003-11-20 Thread David R. Morrison
Well, this one is easy to understand, but I'm not sure how to fix it.

In the "fink" CVS module, we have a file perlmod/Fink/FinkVersion.pm.in .
That is processed with some sed magic in the setup.sh script. So naturally,
there is a "compile failure" when FinkVersion.pm is invoked.

Right now, selfupdate-cvs is working rather well, whereas the rsync

(*) The bug that prevented removal of old files seems to be fixed for

Ahh, found it. Paging Benjamin Reed <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... your
xfree86.info file is broken - mentioning xc-20031117.tar.bz2 which
as far as I can tell never existed anywhere. :(
Yes, I had uploaded to sourceforge but failed to "release" it through
the sourceforge admin, so it disappeared into the ether. It should be
making it's way to the mirrors now.

Re: [Fink-devel] sources for xc-20031117.tar.bz2

2003-11-20 Thread Alexander K. Hansen
This can happen if the upstream site (and mirrors) removes the tarball
before it gets mirrored onto the master (opendarwin) site. I got
bitten this way by pkg-order, which has apparently been purged by
Debian.

I believe that testing has historically relied on users reporting bad
links or people running "fink fetch-all" from time to time.

I don't believe that there's an automatic method: I usually wind up
grep'ing to find stuff like this.

Re: [Fink-devel] Phasing out references to Mac OS X 10.1 (Doc Maintainers?)

2003-11-20 Thread Alexander K. Hansen
One place where we shouldn't touch the existing reference is the
package database page: 10.1 users should have available exactly what
versions of packages exist for them.

Unless we want just to have a separate 10.1-specific document which
includes that information. That would involve a fair amount of effort,
but could be done.

You're right, it probably should. What is currently
in 0.17.1 should work with virtually all versions of rsync

No, that was a slip up by me. As you can tell that package was done

when doing an update-all, guile-1.4-7 told me that gcc 3.1 was needed;
the installation process did not accept the newly installed gcc 3.3

I then used the "sudo gcc_select 3" command which made the update work.
 After tat , I returned to "sudo gcc_select 3.3"

Uninstalling the original version in 5.6.0 is against Fink policy
though. Shouldn't it still be finding ours first if we're setting PERL5LIB?

No, this is The Try This And See If It Solves Your Problem While We Work On
A Proper Solution (TM). And I still haven't gotten a failure report so this
is all guesswork. Could you please run "make test /tmp/test.out 2>&1" and
post that?

Yes, I know. As mentioned the fink-core guys are aware of it and it looks
like the testing packages will be going into bootstrap.

Doesn't matter.  The test-harness-pm probably isn't using UNINST=1 so
its probably shadowed by the original version in 5.6.0, too.

Run "perl -MTest::Harness -wle 'print $Test::Harness::VERSION'" and let me
know what it says. If its less than 2.00 then you have a shadowing
problem. Check "perldoc -l Test::Harness" to find out what file Perl is
loading for Test::Harness.

Again, unless I can see the failure report this is complete guesswork.

[Fink-devel] Perl testing docs

2003-11-20 Thread Michael G Schwern
Here's some links to tutorials about how Perl's testing system works.

Test::Tutorial. Enough to get you going.
perldoc Test::Tutorial
http://search.cpan.org/dist/Test-Simple/lib/Test/Tutorial.pod

Test::Simple. The simplest possible testing library. One function.
Good place to start. Forward compatible with Test::More.
perldoc Test::Simple
http://search.cpan.org/dist/Test-Simple/lib/Test/Simple.pm

Test::More. The standard issue Perl testing module. All the fink tests
are written using this so far.
perldoc Test::More

Slides of the Testing Tutorial given at OSCON last year. Basically an
expanded version of Test::Tutorial.
http://wgz.org/chromatic/talks/TestTutorial/index.html

[EMAIL PROTECTED] Perl mailing list for testing issues.
http://nntp.x.perl.org/group/perl.qa

To run the test suite: make test

To run a single test:  cd t && perl -I../perlmod directory/thattest.t
The tests expect to be run from t/. You can also run the tests in the
debugger, just like any other program.

In the end, tests are just another small Perl program. What makes it
a test is that it prints out "ok" when things pass and "not ok" when they
fail. Other than that, its just a normal program.

If you're experiencing a failure and can't figure out why or how to fix it,
at the very least post the failure to fink-devel. If you're not sure how
much to post, just trap the whole output of "make test" and post that.
Too much information is better than not enough. The failing tests contain
diagnostic information that's often enough to figure out what's gone wrong.

PS Write O'Reilly and tell them a perl testing book would be a GREAT IDEA! ;)

This is not The Fink Way (TM). :)

We need robust fink packages for 5.6.0 which install the Test:: code
in whatever way its going to be needed by the testing suite. Obviously,
these are the packages which we'll want to put into the 10.2 bootstrap.

At the very least just cut & paste the failing portion of the 'make test'
output fink-devel. Simple as that. Then we can go from there. When in
doubt, copy the whole thing. "make test > /tmp/test.out 2>&1"

Too much information is better than too little or none at all.

I'll post up some testing docs in a bit.

This may be premature. The dependency on Test::More hasn't been formally
resolved so 5.6.0 users will have to resolve it manually.

> (And by the way, why are we always finding

No. When you've written a test for a bug that hasn't been fixed yet or
a feature that hasn't been written, the test will fail. Instead of
commenting the test out you can declare it TODO. This means the test
will be run but a failure will be ignored and all diagnostics supressed
about the failure supressed. If the test starts passing an
"unexpected success" will be reported. That means the bug has been fixed.

So you've got a programmatic TODO list and a way to know when old bugs have
been fixed.

That one was mkdir_p() setting $! on failure. I must have fixed it while
fixing something else. Since the test was TODO instead of commented out
we now know the bug is fixed. I've removed the TODO flags from that test.

> if there is a bug in the testing suite that I don't understand in the

> a few of us did.

I suspect I know the problem. Likely when you installed Test::More,
Test::Harness didn't get upgraded. This happens sometimes. The failure.t
test is the only one with TODO tests in it. Test::Harness before 5.8.0
doesn't understand TODO tests, it thinks they're failures. If you have
5.6.0 you might have an old version. Installing Test::More is supposed
to upgrade Test::Harness, but sometimes the old version "shadows" the new
one.

To fix, try reinstalling Test::Harness from
http://search.cpan.org/dist/Test-Harness/ and use "make install UNINST=1"
to make sure the old version is deleted.

It looks like the plan is to put test-simple-pm and test-harness-pm into
bootstrap to solve this sort of problem. Until then it might not
be a bad idea to remove running the tests from the installation process.
I'll do that now.

Its not currently being used, but it will be used. There's a patch to
replace most of the execute() calls with Fink::Command. I decided to wait
on it until some more eyes looked at it. Meanwhile, its nice to know if
Fink::Command works or not.

well 50% of the ppl couldn't install from HEAD, which is bad and
posting to fink-devel won't help unless you write it, we had most of
the project admins and some others looking into it, but we have no idea
how these .t files work and COmmand.pm isn't even being used. And they
won't be forgotten that is why i emailed you. You are the only one
working on this, but fink can't fail to install specially over a file
we don't use.

Re: [Fink-devel] Don't disable tests. Report the failure. (was Re: fink ChangeLog,1.181,1.182 Makefile,1.4,1.5)

2003-11-20 Thread David R. Morrison
I completely agree that tests should not be disabled.

On the other hand, very few of the fink developers have any experience with
any of the perl testing stuff. This makes it hard to even know how to
report a failure.

My saga yesterday evening started when -- in the interests of trying out
somebody's recent change to the code -- I attempted to install the
fink package manager from CVS HEAD. Problem #1 was that the most recent
commit had a bug which kept stuff from compiling. So I backtracked one
step in CVS, and then ran into problems with the tests in failure.t .

The testing suite has now been fully integrated into fink, so that (for
example) anyone trying to install from CVS HEAD will be unable to do so
unless "make test" succeeds. (And by the way, why are we always finding
that there is "1 unexpected success" during testing? Shouldn't an
"unexpected success" count as a failure?)

That's all fine and good, but creates problems for working on the code
if there is a bug in the testing suite that I don't understand in the
least. I checked on IRC, and most folks did not experience the bug but
a few of us did.

I find the failure output from "make test" to be rather cryptic, and I
don't even know what would constitute a useful bug report.

My personal workaround was to comment out the "make test" line from
fink.info.in, allowing the new fink to be installed to that I could continue
to work. As Ben Reed pointed out to me on IRC, the failure was happening
in the new Command.pm module which isn't even being used in fink yet.
