Is this really /usr/bin/perl or some /usr/local/bin/perl? If it is /usr/bin/perl, why would you replace apple's supplied perl? /usr is only for the system software maker. /usr/local, /opt/ and others are for the local admins. I see, so you are now assuming I changed it and that it didn't come on the install media. The machine is 3 days old, nothing has been replaced, everything installed is from the Government/Corporate install media. In that case, it sounds like whoever created your Government/Corporate install media replaced the perl 5.8.6 that was supplied by Apple with a newer perl 5.8.7.  You should contact those people and explain to them that their action has made it impossible to use fink on the machine.Fink supports machines on which the Apple-supplied software has not been modified.  We don't have the resources to support other configurations.  (Although I suppose that if your Corporate IT group that modified Apple's software wants to hire a member of the fink team to expand fink in this way, it could happen!)  -- Dave

After some more exchanges with BuildSmart, I still don't quite know how
he managed to get the output of perl -V that he got (he did fiddle with
his perl after the installation), but he more or less convinced me (*)
that he is right, and Apple did indeed deliver his machine with a system
containing perl-5.8.7. Is there no way to get a confirmation from Apple
(msachs?) In any case, 5.8.7 is the current released version of perl, so
Fink will sooner or later have to think about supporting it.

(*) The most convincing argument is an extract from lsbom of the
Essentials.pkg showing among others

Only for another week or two probably...5.8.8-rc1 was released January
20. The only reason fink would probably *have* to start supporting it
is if this /usr/bin/perl5.8.7 is real. The only reason we would
probably bother supporting it is if 5.8.8 doesn't get out anytime
soon.

I tried to install the XCode from the OSXS 10.4 install media but it
says that it wont install on this machine complaining about an
'Unknown Boot ROM Version: 5.1.7c3, please update to 5.1.5f0' and the
machine refuses to downgrade to 10.4.0 complaining that it's not
supported.

I tried to build fink from source, adjusted scripts to include checks
for perl 5.8.7 (in more than one file) and it wont even build gettext
before it fails.
