If you'd written to the f2c maintainer, he'd probably have said that he
fixed precisely this problem when he updated f2c to version 20020123-3
for the 10.2 tree. To get it, you have to checkout the "dists" module or
do what has been proposed recently to update your package description
trees to the 10.2 tree. In any case, the new version builds fine on 10.2.

(very) Often fink packages are updated not because of a new version of
the program, but for internal fink organization fixes, new features
that we got working due to updated patch file, resolution of package
conflicts, file heirarchy organization fixing, changed dependencies,
etc..That's why the "Revision" number is so high on some packages.
Whenever that changes the package is rebuilt.

Thats why its a good idea to keep your /sw/src tarballs if you have the
space...

I have a question for curiosity sake only:

Sometimes when I do an update [fink update-all] after a [fink

(i)] immediately start compiling without downloading anything new. I
want to think I need to download new source, but obviously I'm wrong;
why?

welcome to the Fink Beginners list... don't get frustrated.

Aqua is a window server for Cocoa, Carbon, and Classic... but not Darwin.

Darwin churns away underneath with no access to graphic windows: terminal-only.

How does UNIX serve graphic windows on other implementations?
by running an X-Window Server... X11.

Apparently some enterprising imaginative desperate people (XonX)
discovered that
an open-source XFree86 project that intended to port X11 to Intel X86 chips
had accidentally become portable (hardware-independent) - notice it's XFree86 -
so they compiled it on Darwin-PPC instead of 386-486-Pentium-+ and it worked.

Now it's a duality... X on X... Darwin serving X11 and Aqua at the same time.
Knock out the background of X11 and now it's transparent.

Then other people jumped on the bandwagon and it hit critical-mass:

* Fink, to give us Debian-type packages to take compiling out of
our hands.
* OroborOSX, to hack the X11 bootstrap and marry it to Aqua so it interleaves.

XonX (XFree86) with Fink(Commander) with OroborOSX is the winning bandwagon.

Of course there are Also-Ran LOSERS:

* XTools by Xenon... who greedily horde their hardware-accelerated OpenGL code
while their outdated snapshot of the open-source XFree86 gets older
and older.

* GNU/Darwin... morons who want to reduce Darwin to Linux... they'll dump Aqua!

* the extremely slow-motion VNC people... you can flip pages faster

John,

I assume you are not talking about MySQL root. MySQL, as well as many
other database, has its own user management system, which is confusing
to new MySQL admins. If I am correct, your problem has nothing to do
with MySQL. You just need to set root password for the OS.

I do not know the instructions you mentioned. The ones that should work
are in http://macosx.org/rootpass.html. After this, follow the
instructions.

This is not a problem of the experimental fink, but rather a bug in the gnome-libs package that will affect people upgrading from old finks. It has been discussed before on the list.

Wow that's pretty cool. It seems to work. I made a fink package for it
which I have put in my experimental directory,
experimental/benh57/finkinfo/test

Does anyone anticipate problems with this? Do you think it would be
safe to put in fink?..

[Fink-users] Try ccache to speed up fink builds

2002-09-04 Thread Brian Schott

A co-worker recently told me about a cool utility called ccache. It is a cc
replacement command that caches your compiles globally (MD5 hashes source
and command line arguments and stores object files in a cache directory in
your home directory). Great for cvs builds with fink. Yes, it eventaully
consumes lots of disk space, but it is worth a gig for me when gnome
updates!

http://freshmeat.net/projects/ccache
http://ccache.samba.org/

It isn't in fink yet. The brave can download tar.gz file (version 1.9) from
URL above. And basically do the following commands. This requires some
unix knowledge.

> tar -xzvf ccache*.gz
> cd ccache*
> ./configure --prefix=/sw
> make
> sudo make install
(enter password)
> cd /sw/bin
> sudo ln -s ccache cc
> sudo ln -s ccache gcc

The next time you build, it will use ccache. To get cache statistics, run
ccache -s

Cheers,
Brian

It seems the problem here is some files have wandered from gnome-libs
in the previous package version to gnome-libs-shlib in the current one,
a problem sometimes occurring due to the split-off of the -shlibs
packages.
One thing you could try is
"sudo dpkg -r --force-depends gnome-libs-dev gnome-libs
gnome-libs-shlibs"
to purge the old packages, and then do a
"fink update gnome-libs-dev".

This is probably a case where fink is not able to update without manual
help. It doesn't realize that it is going to upgrade gnome-libs anyway,
so that a conflict with the older installed version doesn't matter.

You can do "dpkg -r --force-depends gnome-libs" first and then "fink
install gnome-libs" etc.

I think the update is not always smart enough about rebuilding all
necessary dependencies. "fink rebuild gtk+ gtk+-shlibs" might help
here, though I am not sure about this particular one (but I had a
similar problem with gtk+/gdk libs not linking).

2002-09-04 Thread J. Brian Adams

I seem to be having problems with octave and tex. When I try to install
Octave, I am forced to choose system-tetex as a dependency. But
system-tetex fails with an error code (1) and the installation script
returns an error exit status 100 code. I have tried to install
tetex-base instead, but fink won't let me access it all.

[Fink-users] dpkg errors prevent update-all

2002-09-04 Thread Ronald Florence

With fink configured in the experimental 10.2 mode, and with the
unstable trees added to my configuration, any effort at `fink
update-all' or `fink install gimp' produces errors like these:

dpkg -i

Nope. There are 2 trees, stable and unstable, and they are
"distributed" through CVS. The binary release (like Fink 0.4.0 or
whatever) is a sort of snapshot-in-time of the stable tree, so when you
install that Fink 0.4.0 dmg, it gives you stable at that time, and then
a selfupdate-cvs will update it to the latest stable package list.

You can then edit fink.conf to enable the unstable tree, and do another
selfupdate-cvs and you will be able to see the latest unstable packages.

Edit /sw/etc/fink.conf so that the Trees line reads
Trees: local/main unstable/main unstable/crypto local/bootstrap

The fink cvs distribution is not inherently less stable-- it's simply
updated more frequently than the downloadable fink distributions.

No, running fink itself is not using the unstable tree by default. apt-get
and dselect use precompiled versions of the packages; fink compiles them on
your computer.

To enable the unstable tree, see this part of the FAQ:

You need to run "dpkg -r --force-depends manconf". A revised version of
the 10.2 upgrade routine will include this step (before we release the
upgrade for general use).

Thanks for the feedback, and please report any other problems which you
may have.

You should rebuild db3 first (and fink reinstall db3-shlibs if it
doesn't do it automatically).

As I understand the "node for ... already exists" problem, the following
happens:
gimp BuildDepends on gnome-libs-dev which in turn BuildDepends on "db3
(>= 3.3.11-8)". You probably have an earlier version of db3-shlibs
installed, and when fink constructs its dependency list, it first
encounters a dependence on db3 without specified version, so it takes
the one you already have installed. Later on it sees the dependence on
version >=3.3.11-8, but it is not intelligent enough to replace the
earlier dependence on an older version by the newer one.

In any case, the new gimp will need db3-shlibs-3.3.11-8.

Using the new experimental 10.2 mode, with unstable trees enabled,
after reading in yesterday's email that the gimp package is now
available in the 10.2 tree, I do

   % sudo fink selfupdate-cvs
   % sudo fink install gimp

and get

[auda:fink/10.2/CVS] ron% sudo fink install gimp
Information about 1129 packages read in 1 seconds.

Failed: Internal error: node for db3-shlibs already exists

I'm still eager to install gimp, and would welcome suggestions.

This is not a problem with the new compiler, but with the new
libSystem.dylib which has some parts exiled to libncurses.dylib. The new
readline package in unstable takes this into account. You need to
activate the unstable tree if you want to have a chance to succeed with
fink on 10.2.

Try readline-4.3-3 or later.

[Fink-users] fink uodate-all problem

Hi all,
I try to install some stuff on my new 10.2 computer.
First I tried apt but some error installing glib redirect me on fink
install with compilation...
I found this on the fink sourceforge site:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/cvsaccess/index.php

fink selupdate-cvs ran well

but fink update-all failed with readline install.
I found in MLs archives that someone had this problem.
The "solution" was to
$ sudo gcc_select 2
to install readline but it fails too !

Any help would be appreciate

thanks

Im using:
Mac OS 10.1.5
 >fink --version :
Package manager version: 0.10.0
Distribution version: 0.4.0.cvs

My system has some header files gssappi.h. also a new one called
xgssapi.h :-(. Maybe a make failure?
 >locate gssapi.h
/sw/src/cvs-1.11.2-1/cvs-1.11.2/lib/xgssapi.h
/System/Library/Frameworks/Kerberos.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/GSS.framework/
Versions/A/Headers/gssapi.h
/usr/include/Kerberos/gssapi/gssapi.h

Can you fix this or help?
Thanx in advance
Joseph

Re: [Fink-users] Continuing story of problems with xfree86 on 10.2.1

No, your problem is not the same. Yours is a simple path problem that
can be cured by making /sw a symlink to /Volumes/DS9/sw and putting /sw
as BasePath into /sw/etc/fink.conf. Your problem actually is caused by a
bug in the logic of the splitoff package construction. It will be fixed
soon with the version of fink currently in CVS and a corresponding new
version of xfree86-base-*-info.

See here:

> mv /Volumes/DS9/sw/src/root-
> xfree86-base-4.2.0.1-1/Volumes/DS9/sw/../Applications
> /Volumes/DS9/sw/src/root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.0.1-1/Volumes/DS9/sw/..

Here the splitoff code tries to move XDarwin.app from the xfree86-base
package's build directory over to the one of xfree86-rootless.
XDarwin.app sits in /Applications, and therefore got built in
/sw/src/root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.0.1-1/Applications.

The splitoff code thinks that "/" is one up from fink's base directory,
which is true if the latter is "/sw", but it is not true in your case
where it looks in
root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.0.1-1/Volumes/DS9/sw/../
Obviously, there is no "Applications" folder there.

In Eric's and Alan's (here I am guessing, he still doesn't give details)
cases, no Applications folder with XDarwin.app was built in
/sw/src/root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.0.1-1/
in the first place. There was a /sw/src/Applications folder with nothing
inside, and it is unclear where it came from.
