Is it Ok to run fink with perl 5.8 or is this not recommended? (though, I did it exactly as it says on that web page) 4 Re-update fink - i.e., the same procedure that follows the Jaguar upgrade in http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/jaguar.php ? 5 Re-install fink from scratch ??? (Please, no!) I hope this hasn't already been discussed; a search for perl 5.8 in the fink-users archive brought nothing relevant as far as I can see. [Fink-users] Problems with Nedit5.3-5
Anyone know of a work-around for this problem in Nedit? When I open a file using the File:Open command to open a *second* file using the FileSelectionDialog, the file opens, but the window does not respond to mouse or keyboard input. I think the problem started with one of the recent updates to lesstif (I'm currently at lesstif 0.93.36-2). In addition, I'm seeing numerous other error messages in the xterm that I launch nedit from: XmFontListCreate() is an obsolete function! Or when I bring up the Find dialog box, I get: XmManager _XmAcceleratorHandler: bad news!!! XmManager _XmAcceleratorHandler: being destroyed, bad news!!! So it looks like it's trying to set up X11 forwarding, but the DISPLAY variable remains unset. I wonder if some parameter in the Jaguar network/sharing preferences may be to blame. I can remote log in, but the DISPLAY variable is still missing. Looks exactly as here. Just to verify, you did delete any old .Xauth* files on both client and server machines? What I can think of: explicitly create a new .Xauthority on the client machine with 'xauth generate :0', and add the following to the ~/.ssh/rc on the Mac: if read proto cookie [ -n $DISPLAY ]; then if [ `echo $DISPLAY | cut -c1-10` = 'localhost:' ]; then # X11UseLocalhost=yes /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth add unix:`echo $DISPLAY | cut -c11-` $proto $cookie else # X11UseLocalhost=no /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth add $DISPLAY $proto $cookie fi fi (this helped me to get rid of authentication errors, though it's probably just a slim hope in your case, as DISPLAY doesn't seem to be set in the first place and there never is any authentication going on). BTW, have you tried setting DISPLAY=localhost:10.0 manually and run an X11 program? Finally, I never got X11 forwarding to work with OS X's openssh daemon, so you may want to make sure that it is actually /sw/sbin/sshd that's running and nothing else. As a last diagnostic tool, you can start the daemon manually with 'sudo /sw/sbin/sshd -ddd' and watch out for debug messages on the server side. Re: [Fink-users] perl 5.8 ?
I compiled and installed Perl 5.8 from source according to the instructions on the Apple Darwin page and selected the option to over-write the Apple installation in System/Library rather than the default /usr install. I have been running it error free for a month under fairly heavy Perl and Tk use without incident that I can point to Fink as being the cause and all problems have been fixable. At first I encountered a few hitches with previously compiled XS routines that Fink installs--the solution is simply to make Fink recompile them using the 5.8 links and libs which it does auto-magically without intervention. I also installed Tk independently of Fink from source and it works fine. One caution though: installing Perl Mods from CPAN which require compilation (those in pure Perl are fine) may not compile completely nor pass the test even if compilation succeeds. I am very circumspect about non-fink Perl modules as a result of a few frustrating experiences. I am keeping at it and will post anything important I discover. Good luck.
