Re: [Fink-users] fink scanpackages fails

2015-10-03 Thread PNM
It didn’t seem all that significant, but I thought I’d ask.

Thanks. Looking forward to getting fink fully up and running. I’m liking El
Capitan so far. It’s making my 7-year-old MBP a little more nimble.

It’s an inactive URL—it’s not old, but not yet active.

The error isn’t actually with scanpackages, but with the post-scanpackages
attempt to update the package lists on the binary distribution. However, there
isn’t a binary distribution for 10.11 right now.

Those messages are harmless—apart from potentially causing scripts to fail. If
you want not to worry about them, you can run “fink configure” and turn off
fink’s integration with the binary distribution.

If you're copying and pasting into Terminal, make sure that it is two
hyphens ( - ) before 'install'. I've seen at least one mail reader that
converts two hyphens into an em-dash (a longer version of the hyphen and
en-dash), and that will fail.

But actually Apple did not yet made the Xcode Command Line Tools of 10.11.
I have to wait they make it.

Hello Alexander,

I have updated OX to 10.11, and now try to follow the instruction.

I type sudo dpkg -i fink-0.39.0-101_darwin-x86_64.deb

Apple pulled the OpenSSL headers out, so system-openssl-dev will _never_ exist
in 10.11 and later (unless they change their minds). The package will need to
be updated to declare dependencies on openssl100.

[Fink-users] Octave fails to build on 10.10.5 due to no system-java16-dev

I refurbished an old MacBookPro with more memory and an ssd that is running
10.10.5. I installed a clean version of fink which I have updated to fink
0.39.0. I downloaded apples’ Java for OS X 2015-001, which is the current

that this java 1.6 package is installed and no octave packages can be built!!

This shows that java16 was installed and fink does not seem to recognize
system-java-dev.

[Fink-users] virtuoso fails to build in 10.11

2015-10-03 Thread Gary K. Olson
I attempted to update virtuoso, but it depends upon system-openssl-dev which
has not been updated to 10.11:

fink update virtuoso
Information about 9373 packages read in 2 seconds.
~ clip ~
Can't resolve dependency "system-openssl-dev" for package "virtuoso-6.1.8-5"
(no matching packages/versions found)
Exiting with failure.

virtuoso actually seems to use openssl100-ssl rather than openssl, and
system-openssl-dev does not currently exist in 10.11
By the way, updating to fink 0.39 and then installing 10.11 went smoothly. Of
course we don’t yet have the binaries. Thanks everyone who works on fink for
getting the distribution up and running on the new OS X.

Here’s a recent article that discusses the situation along with how to override
System Integrity Protection (rootless):

http://www.macworld.com/article/2986118/security/how-to-modify-system-integrity-protection-in-el-capitan.html

Yeah, ideally in Unix systems you’d want to be able to modify anything, but on
the other hand best practices indicate that you shouldn’t muck around in the
system directories. /usr/local still appears to be modifiable, though.

[Fink-users] El Capitain /usr/bin immutable

2015-10-03 Thread Sean Lake
Hello all,

I was surprised to learn that in 10.11 Apple has decided to make /usr/bin
unmodifiable, even by root/sudo. I don't know how many folders this extends to,
but I'm curious if anyone on the list knows Apple's rationale? I ask because,
even though I never actually modify those directories, I can't help but feel it
violates the core Unix philosophy that the computer belongs to the user and, if
they're willing to invoke enough voodoo, can modify it however they wish.

Thanks,
Sean

I can send you a .deb archive for fink-0.39.0-101, and you can install that
manually via dpkg.

Or we might be able to fix your fink up by manually copying some files over
into your live fink from a current fink source.

The master branch (https://github.com/fink/fink/) from Fink’s github
tree is, however. If you clone that or download the zip archive, and
then use “./inject.pl” from within the fink source tree this will
update fink to be compatible, as long as you do this update before
updating to El Capitan.

Hi Alexander et al.: Unfortunately, I upgraded to El Capitan *before*
updating fink to its latest version.

From what I have read, I understand that the only solution is removing
/sw and installing fink from scratch. Is this right? Or is there any
workaround or will it "magically" work in a future fink release?

Thanks for any tip.

Best,
Claus
