[Fink-users] gnome sound preferences options not active

2008-12-03 Thread Richard E . Miles
I have been trying to use the sound preferences options without
success. The menu shows the options but can not enter any options
because the whole menu is not active to input. I went into gconf and
selected the options so sound events work but these should be
available tin the sound preferences dialog. This is not right as you
are stuck with the default options. You can not select .wav files to
associated events :) Does anyone have this working?

[Fink-users] gnome-settings-daemon causes problems

2008-11-30 Thread Richard E. Miles
I have been trying to get gnome configured so that it will work
properly. When I start gnome I get a message saying there was a prblem
starting gnome-settings-daemon, return value 0. Themes, sound,
backgrounds will not work. Indeed I did some tests and found that if I
start gnome-settings-daemon from the xinitrc script before starting
gnome-sessions, that this message goes away. However choosing a theme

problems encountered were that logout doesn't work and assistive
technology can not be selected.

Any help will be appreciated.

[Fink-users] startx causes both gnome and kde to load

2008-11-20 Thread Richard E . Miles
I have been puzzled by this for quite some time. When I start up using
startx both gnome and kde start but my .xinitrc file just calls kde to
start. This seems strange to me. Here is my .xinitrc file:

#!/bin/bash
/sw/bin/esd &
#export ESPEAKER=localhost
. /sw/bin/init.sh
#if [ $1 ]
#then
#quartz-wm --only-proxy &
#gnome-panel &
#gdm &
# use GNOMES's window manager
#metacity --replace &
# use enlightenment window manager
#e16 --replace &
# start GNOME
#exec gnome-session
#else
#export KDEWM=kwin
quartz-wm --only-proxy &
export KDEWM=e16
/sw/bin/startkde >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1
#fi

Why is this so?
Your help would be appreciated.

You might try doing a "reinstall" of perl586, to make sure that

Did a reinstall. same error occurs.
I did a fiink selfupdate-cvs earlier and it replaced the fink

this operation. I don't know if I should get rid of that directory.
Maybe that is causing problems.

You can get rid of it--but that behavior is normal and the fink.old
directory doesn't interfere.

What do you get from "file /sw/bin/perl5.8.6"?

This is gtk2-pm586, not gtk+2, so I've changed the subject.

You didn't provide your architecture, OS, and Xcode Tools
version, but I'll assume you're on Leopard due to the /swbin/
perl5.8.6 above. The build works for me on 10.5.4/Intel/Xcode 3.1
as well as 10.5.4/PowerPC/Xcode 3.1 .

You might try rebuilding perl586 in case it somehow got misbuilt
and is therefore throwing the bus error.

Also, since Perl 5.8.8 comes with Leopard, and if you aren't
installing gtk2-pm586 as a dependency for something that doesn't
accept the -588 variant (which it should, most likely), you could
see if the -pm588 variant works.

I have intel mac 10.5.3 and xcode 3.1. I used to have xcode 3.0 but
a got the 3.1 version.
This still fails with the same error as shown above after I rebuilt
perl586. I insatlled gtk2-pm588 also. So the problem still exists.

Also: when you did the rebuild, you did use "fink rebuild perl586"
or the Fink Commander equivalent, right? You didn't just do a
"reinstall"?

Alexander K. Hansen

I used fink Commander rebuild perl586.

I tried to use what you suggested and the server would not accept a
connection.
I commented out those lines and then tried a connection and to started
and placed a gnome-terminal and nautilus window in the top left of the
screen where it put the title bars under the X application title bar.
I could not move those windows because I could not get to there window
title bars. The funny thing is if I start kde, the gnome gnome
application works fine along with kde. I guess there is something
anout trying to use gnome-session that is messed up. I will use the
kde with gnome as that works fine. Go figure!
Thanks for you suggestions. Here is my .xinitrc file contents:

#!/bin/bash
#/sw/bin/esd &
. /sw/bin/init.sh
#. /sw/bin/xinitrc.sh
#. /usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc
if [ $1 ]
then
quartz-wm --only-proxy &
exec gnome-session
else
export KDEWM=kwin
/sw/bin/startkde >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1
fi

I have tried numerous time to try and get gnome to properly setup and
run on a intel imac. I have in my .xinitrc :
. /sw/bin/init.sh
quartz-wm --only-proxy &

Gnome starts up but does not set up the gnome environment so that I
have useful fonts in a gnome-terminal. Ie it's gibberish. What am I
missing to get this to run properly?

I have successfully built this program now. So you observations are
correct. I don't like software that is prone to build one time but has
failed previously. Thank you for telling me about your experience with
this problem.

It seemed to be trying to see what header files were available and/or
available packages (software) was needed to compile. It did this over
and over again without building. The computer finally showed a
spinning wheel and was totally locked up, requiring me to hit the
power on button as the mouse would not move and the keyboard was not
active.

I tried yesterday to build this package and it ran for 6 hours and
locked up my computer. I had to press the power button on the back of
the imac display as I could not use mouse or keyboard to force quit.
It seems to go over and over and over trying to determine
dependencies. I use leopard 10.5 intel imac. I suspect that it must of
consumed all available memory or something to lock up my computer in
this manner. I don't know how to fix this so I am no longer doing fink
update-all.

This doesn't sound very Fink-related, but we'll let that pass.
Lockups, in my experience, are often associated with hardware
problems, like poorly seated RAM modules, or bad ones.

How do you set fink.conf tree to be crypto pangocairo. I tried /local/
pangocairo/crypto first. Then I tried /local/crypto/pangocairo. In
both cases it failed update-all with the same dependency on package

When is the gnome cairo software going to be integrated with the main

Re: [Fink-users] Gnome yelp help info lacks style

2008-01-10 Thread Richard E. Miles
Thanks for telling me this. I have yelp-viewer for seamonkey. This
only compiled recently so I could run Gnome. How do I get pangocairo
from the experimental tree? Also how do I get firefox 2.0? The firefox
1.5 yelp-viewer would not build for firefox 1.5 would not build on the
unstable tree.

Your help would be appreciated.

On Jan 10, 2008, at 7:34 PM, David Reiser wrote:

I don't think the you can, yet. For a while I thought the yelp
problems were with the now quite old firefox 1.5 elements. But even
with the recently available firefox 2.0.x, yelp doesn't behave. The
possibilities are to dig back and find an older yelp that works, or
wait for pangocairo. Yelp finally works for me in the pangocairo
experimental tree with the firefox 2 viewer. Leopard sort of threw a
wrench into the rollout (aka pangocairo branch) of the massively
updated gnome entities, but it is pretty close to ready.

Thanks Dan that worked and I got the package installed. I am still

FAQ on fink's website solves the problem. If not, ask on the fink-users

Note that this is preferable to emailing the maintainer directly, since
most fink package maintainers do not have access to all possible

### execution of /sw/bin/dpkg-lockwait failed, exit code 1
Can't set build lock for vte-shlibs (0.12.2-1004)

If any of the above dpkg error messages mention conflicting packages
or missing
dependencies -- for example, telling you that the package
fink-buildlock-vte-shlibs-0.12.2-1004 conflicts with something else --
fink has
probably gotten confused by trying to build many packages at once. Try
building just this current package vte-shlibs (i.e, "fink build vte-
shlibs").
When that has completed successfully, you could retry whatever you
did that
led to the present error.

Regardless of the cause of the lock failure, don't worry: you have not
wasted
compiling time! Packages that had been completely built before this
error
occurred will not have to be recompiled.

See http://wiki.finkproject.org/index.php/Fink:buildlocks for more
information.

This is a stumbling block for installing bundle-gnome.

Is there a way to get this installed? Your help would be appreciated.

I have got /usr/X11 set in my .profile. Should it be /usr/X11R6? I am
on Leopard and thought that /usr/X11 was the location of the libs?

Re: [Fink-users] Xterm without terminal

2007-11-19 Thread Richard E. Miles
I have no Idea where those messages are coming from. I moved
my ,Xresouces file to a different name, so it was not coming from
that. Sorry about the cc to fink users. I will try what you said and
see if there is a difference. I tried it that way and do not get the
messages and it reads the .Xresources because I get the correct
colors. I did have an error in my .Xresources file the
xterm*background had a spelling error. That is now fixed. I will try
the app launch with finder and see what happens. Okay it is now okay.
I guess it was the spelling error then. my bad. sorry my typing is bad
in my old age :)

Re: [Fink-users] Xterm without terminal

2007-11-19 Thread Richard E. Miles
I found a xterm.old in /usr/X11/bin and replaced the xterm with the
old xterm. I now can start an xterm and do not get the foregoround and
backgound errors I recieved. I am able to get the colors I want from
my .Xresouces file and everything is fine.

some how the mjpegtools programs will install. I guess we have to keep

I did as you asked and it recompiled and relinked the shlibs. I tried
to send the rsults of a startkde that failed but the number of bytes
sent exceeds what the list will allow. I did send it to you. I do not

[Fink-users] Has anyone got KDE to run on leopard?

2007-11-16 Thread Richard E. Miles
I have been trying to get bundle-kde to install for some time now but
it fails on mjpegtools compile. I have reported this earlier in the
list. I was just curious if anyone has got KDE to run.
Is startkde the proper way to start kde?

Before reporting any errors, please run "fink selfupdate" and
try again. If you continue to have issues, please check to see if the
FAQ on fink's website solves the problem. If not, ask on the fink-users
or fink-beginners mailing lists, with a carbon copy to the maintainer:

James Watson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Note that this is preferable to emailing the maintainer directly, since
most fink package maintainers do not have access to all possible
hardware and software configurations.

I tried that. it does not seem to change how it works. Actually I have
got the xml-sax-pm588-0.38 to install by installing some other xml
parser apps.

So the fink selfupdate and fink uodate-all say nothing to install. I
can not get kde to start by typing startkde. Is there some other way
to get it to start?

Re: [Fink-users] Continuing along with kde installation and had another problem

2007-11-13 Thread Richard E. Miles
Yeah you have the same problem as I do. the libGL.dylib has a problem.
Hopefully Benjamin Reed will find the solution. I would like to run
KDE on the mac.

[Fink-users] Continuing along with kde installation and had another problem

2007-11-11 Thread Richard E. Miles
Thanks Benjamin Reed for fixing kdeedu compile problem. I did a fink
selfupdate and fink update-all and got to the point of compiling
koffice. The following app failed to compile:

[Fink-users] Having problem geting kde to update on Leopard

2007-11-10 Thread Richard E. Miles
When trying to update kde I ran into this problem with the
kdeedu3-3.5.8-1021 portion. Here is the output from the last compile:

g++ -dynamiclib -single_module  -o ./libkdeedu/kdeeducore/.libs/

Before reporting any errors, please run "fink selfupdate" and
try again. If you continue to have issues, please check to see if the
FAQ on fink's website solves the problem. If not, ask on the fink-users
or fink-beginners mailing lists, with a carbon copy to the maintainer:

Benjamin Reed <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Note that this is preferable to emailing the maintainer directly, since
most fink package maintainers do not have access to all possible
hardware and software configurations.

Macintosh-3:~ rmiles$

Can anyone tell me how to get this to compile please? Thanks

[Fink-users] Having a kde compile problem of poppler1

2007-11-08 Thread Richard E. Miles
I have tried to install the kde software on my computer. When the
installation gets to the point where poppler1-0.54-1025 is compiled it
Failed: phase compiling: poppler1-0.5.4-1025 failed.
I did a funk selfupdate but the problem persists. Does anyone know how
to get kde to install on a leopard?
