Does anyone ever go to the E-Bay Auction on the Internet? If you do , go to

Evaluation Score

1998-10-02 Thread Mary Barsness
This message is from: "Mary Barsness" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have attended two evaluations. I think everyone is in agreement that
evaluations are important for breeders to participate in so their
stock can be evaluated prior to breeding. So far at the two
evaluations I have not heard of a score that a horse should receive in
order for it to be considered good breeding stock. Does anyone know of
any general guidelines? I know the conformation score is made up of
many components and a horse may not earn enough point to earn a blue
due to its lack of appropriate Fjord marking or maybe it doesn't
posses enough "presence' yet this same horse may overall be very sound
etc. I was just wondering peoples thoughts on this.
Thanks,
Mary

Marge and Bill,

Those of us who are veterinarians, or those who have been in a similar
situation, admire you greatly for going the distance with Asta in the
treatment of her founder. Most people, never having been where you are,
simply cannot know the countless hours you have spent, not to mention the
money, helping her. They'll never know the joy and hope when she has a
good day, and the incredible heartbreak when she suffers a setback.
However, how much you love Asta and how dedicated you are to your horses
has come through clearly. Thank you.

Hi Pamela...thanks for asking...yes, there will be scanned material
very soon, with designs posted on my very own page. I've received many
other requests for fjord related material and products. Some "new"
things made available will be: handpainted jean jackets with your
favorite animal on back or front, portraits of pets on sweats, and small
wooden items (such as shelves, step stools etc.) with various painted
fjord scenes on them. I'll keep everyone posted. Won't be that much
longer, just need help from my "computer whiz-kids" who know all there

Hello Kristine,
I use to live in Mpls. but now I live about 20 miles south of Mpls. in
Lakeville. I hadn't really seen a Fjord until about 5 years ago. A man
about 1/2 mile from us raises Fjords and he told us to stop by and see his
horses. We went to look at them and when we left my husband said," We have
to get a couple of these". The rest is history. I'm not really sure how
many Fjords there are in Mn. I think quite a few. Maybe Mike can give us
an estimate of number.

Hello folks,
Uumm, just a quick note to let you know that I have been a
professional commercial/fine artist for the past 25 years. I work in
various mediums such as: pastels, watercolor, graphite, prisma color
etc...If anyone is interested in seeing my artwork, they may send for a
free brochure and price list.
My specialty at present is creating pet portraits. But, before
opening my studio here at home, I worked for several ad agencies. I have
experience in printed materials, hand painted signs, typesetting etc.
Working at home has it's advantages and disadvantages...especially
when you look out of your window to see those fuzzy little fjord faces,
beckoning you to come out and ride or go for a drive!
Anyway, besides "tooting my own horn" here, I just wanted to mention
my profession and the fact that I'm available to work on promotional
material for the association. Thanks everyone! Ingrid
PS...depending on interest expressed, I would like to make available
T-shirts, sweats, stationary and other fjord related items. Just a

That suggestion has already been brought to the committee by me and several

will most likely not happen. It is already an expensive process as it is.
Another judge would make it even more costly.

Hi
I have a suggestion in response to Carol's e-mail yesterday,

"But, EVALUATION RESULTS ARE FAR
MORE IMPORTANT. Though, perhaps not totally "carved in stone," They are
the basis for a breeder's decisions . . . to geld or not to geld . . . to
breed or not."

I agree with Carol that the evaluation results are very important to the
breed. I think that our evaluators are very good. My suggestion would be
that they have their own separate score cards and we average them out.
Ideally it would be nice to add a third judge and do it this way.

This method is very popular with the state 4-H horse shows and also with
some of the larger Morgan breed shows like the regional and national
championships. I'm sure it is used in a lot of other breeds as well.
If we use this method we are relying on the average of three educated
person's unbiased decisions which I think will make the breed even better!
