lick sap out of the little spile? Aren't these Fjords something? Sally
where are your Fjords? If you would like to visit us and see Storm, we
would love to meet you. We are next door neighbours...in New Brunswick.

I advertised my Arab todayshe is just a little too flighty for

horses. He decided to try something...he laid down a plastic garbage bag
and a plastic woven feed bag...right in the aisle where the horses come
in...first in was Sundance (solid App. gelding)...he just sort of rolled his
eyes and came right on in and went into his stall to eat. Next came Misty
the arabshe bowed her neck took off back out of the barn and had to be
led in and over the bags...which she jumped. Enter Storm...h whats
this...sniff...sniff...to heck with this my supper's in there! Stomped
directly on the bags and on into his stall. I clipped his mane tonight and
has he ever grownRandy has been telling me he hadn't grown a bit this
summer but I could hardly reach up to comfortably clip between his
ears...had to haul his head down so I could see what I was doing. (I am
rather short)

Yup Jean that is what you need all rightStorm would swing his fuzzy butt
into our wire fence (6" squares) and almost lift the posts right out of the
ground! A "hot" strand or two of electric fence sure changed his mind.
We have a strand two feet to three feet off the ground and one strand across
the top and problem solved.

Well I must get myself to bed...it is almost midnight.
Thanks for all the help with saddles. I just had a thoughtI bought a
fairly short felt type girth for Misty and now I have to get a longer one
for Storm. Wahand it was an expensive one too! Oh well by the time he
turns 3 I will have a better idea of what length he will need.

About rules for the driving classes, Turlock

2001-09-28 Thread Dagrun Aarsten
This message is from: "Dagrun Aarsten" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi everybody

Can someone tell me really quickly fundamental rules for the driving classes
(cones course)? We are taking Tinn to Turlock early tomorrow morning!!! Will
be great.

In Norway, there are always two people in the cart, the driver and the
groom. Is it the same here? The driver needs to wear some sort of hat/cap
(or helmet of one prefers), gloves and an apron. Any differences?

I'll be in one of the last classes so hopefully I'll see how things work :-)

Hope to see you all soon! I'll be wearing a white "Norges Fjordhestlag"
T-shirt (until it gets too dirty) so if you see mee come and say hi! Ruthie
and I will leave early tomorrow morning.

See you then!

Dagrun

PS: I promised Norges Fjordhestlag (the Norwegian Fjord association) to
write an article for their magazine. It'll be fun to be a journalist. Hey I
can go around interviewing people! .Next thing you know I'll get a TV
team and travel around making a documentary about fjords in America! But
that will be next year maybe...:-)

> extra-wide quarter horse bars

That is my recollection too from the time I spent looking for a saddle
earlier this summer.

Another western saddle manufacturer, Circle Y, has at least one western
saddle in the $1000 range that comes in an extra wide tree. I looked at
this saddle at a tack shop. It seemed very nice, but the shop manager
and I both thought the square skirts on this saddle would be too much of
a good thing for short Fjord backs.

Just a comment: In looking for a western saddle, I made the mistake of
thinking that a "full" or "wide" tree meant a saddle was wider than one
with "full Quarter Horse bars". These terms apparently mean about the
same thing, I found out -- fortunately before I bought a saddle.

I think some Fjords can take a saddle with full QH bars (full tree), but
my guess is that many will need an extra-wide tree (extra-wide bars). I
would not bother with a "regular tree" (semi-QH bars) for a Fjord --
unfortunately this eliminates almost all inexpensive saddles, since most
of those have semi-QH bars.

After looking at Wintecs, Australian saddles, and saddles from Circle Y
and other western-saddle manufacturers, I finally bought a Tucker trail
saddle. It is a Cheyenne model with round skirts, western "center-fire"
rigging, and an extra-wide tree. It fits Sissel, my Fjord mare, very
nicely.

My saddle cost about $1100. There are several models available --
endurance, plantation (picture a cross between English & western
saddles), old-time western (high backed), and Montreal trooper (unusual
style -- hard to describe). You can customize most styles of saddles
with round or square skirts, several different rigging (cinch
attachment) options including English 3-billet style, the kind of
decorations and color, etc.

My saddle came complete with a neoprene girth (um, 34" length, I
believe) and leather cinch ties (latigos). The saddles have a stuffed
wool padding, not a sheepskin lining like traditional Western saddles.
It weighs about 27 pounds, which is much lighter than many Western
saddles. The leather is U.S. tanned -- heavy yet pliable, not "boardy"
and stiff.

It took about 6 weeks to get the saddle. I am happy with the fit and
finish of the saddle -- it seems to be very nicely made.

If you want more info about these saddles, see

Thanks Carol and to the Scotts our Congratulations. This is what the
list likes to hear. I sure would like to read more on the Fjord horses in
competition with other breeds that have made it, or are giving their best to
show what Fjords are all about. Some have placed in small shows an others in
larger shows. All Fjord owners "Hats off"to you , as you try in every thing
you do, to show and promote what this wonderful breed can do. The Libby show
had winners , lets hear more on what went on (sorry we could not be there ).
It was nice to hear about Anne and Gayle but it was bits and pieces until the
tape (we hope is in the making) can be put together for all to see. I do
prefer to see the full name of the horse and know the breeder is doing a
great job in producing the best.

I also posted some of our girls (both red-headed grand and fjord types!)

Ursula, I am so glad to hear the Raynor is doing better. I have a couple
pics of him in the Libby batch with him putting forth his best effort (not
to mention your husband!). And thanks for sharing his symptoms to help the
rest of us be alert with our own horses. And I concur with several people

A belated "good luck and safe journey" to all the folks who are traveling to

Harvest Moon Carriage Classic - MAJOR BRAG ALERT

2001-09-28 Thread missnaveta
This message is from: "missnaveta" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (by way of Arthur and
Carol Rivoire <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>)

Hello Everybody from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm -

The other day we got this message from Betsy Scott, who along with her
husband, Michael, has every reason in the world to do a MAJOR BRAG ALERT.

Dear Carol and Arthur:

Just had to write to you tonite to tell you about my "Dream Team" and our
weekend in Des Moines at the show. It was absolutely the best show that we
have ever had (and we have never had a bad show). Billie Hill and Jean
Kinsella both had to cancel due to the WTC in NYC. Anne Wakefield-Leck (I
think Anne was the first woman in the world to win a 4 in hand world
championship) was the judge and John Freiburger (whom we bought our new
marathon vehicle from) was the TD. ADS made some special allowances for the
show due to the tragedy in NY.

On Sat morning Michael and BDF Miss Naveta won the turnout and reinsmanship
classes
and then won working pleasure on Sun. Anne told Michael that she likes to
watch Naveta and in her words "she moves the way a pony should." She also
said Michael had perfect posture, quiet hands and a beautiful turnout with a
very obedient pony that always works well. I guess she liked him as he also
was runner up in the Concours d'Elegance Class which makes our 8th
invitation in 8 shows. How many fjords can say that - 8 Concours at ADS
shows? They did well on the course classes as well as Naveta loves cross
country and cones.

The show was held at Living History Farms in Des Moines and is a
reconstruction of an old 1860 prairie town. We had a carraige parade thru
the town at noon with 800 visitors at the center watching the parade. Each
carriage had a number on it and the visitors were asked to place a ballot
for their favorite. That night at the party, they announced the winner.
Peoples Choice Award went to none other than our team. What a thrill to
once again receive an award from the public.

The next day we showed in a downpour and temps around 40 - thought I was
going to die of pneumonia. Naveta just keeps on going and going. Michael
again did cross country in the rain but it didn't slow her down. Concours
was also in the rain.

Sun afternoon after the show was the awards party. They gave out the
ribbons for the course classes and then the divisional championships and of
course, ours was last. The award was a beautiful oak keepsake box about
4x10" long with a hand painted horse and carriage on the cover of the box.
It is now in our living room as they once again, won the open pony
championship.

But the biggest thrill of the entire weekend was the Bob Riley
Sportsmanship/Horseman Award that was a memorial for a long time Iowa morgan
horseman whom everyone loved dearly. He died this past June at age 92 and a
few tears were shed when they talked about Bob. All of the competitors were
asked to vote for the one person that best represented the qualities that
Bob strived for. A good horseman and sportsman and one that truly cared for
his animals. I broke down in tears when they announced Michael the first
winner of this annual award. He received a lovely plaque to bring home as
well as his name and BDF Miss Naveta's name engraved on the permanent plaque
which will remain at Living History Farms. Of all of his awards, this was
certainly the most meaningful when your peers vote for you. Michael is very
well known and respected in the driving community and this award meant more
to us than anything that we have ever done in the ring. I just could not
believe it as he has only been showing ADS for 3 seasons and most of the
people there are much older and have been showing forever so for all of
these people to vote for Michael, was the highest compliment of all. We
were deeply touched.

Just in case you have forgotten, this is what my team has done since last
Sept:
Grand Champion Novice Pony - Villa Louis
Grand Champion Open Pony - Harvest Moon
Grand Champion Carriage Horse - Kandi Klassic Morgan
Reserve Champion Pony - Columbus Carriage Classic
Reserve Champion Pony - North Star Morgan Americanna
Reserve Champion Open Pony - Villa Louis
Grand Champion Open Pony - Harvest Moon
Grand Champion Driven Dressage - Central States

EIGHT Grand and Reserve Championships in our last 8 shows! I am so proud of
them both. I hope you share in our happiness too as Naveta carries your
name and your mother's name. (Carol's note: BDF Miss Naveta was born in
our "N" year, and named after my mother whose first name is 'Naveta', as is
my middle name) Back to Betsy's wonderful story . . . We hope that we
have made BDF proud to have
bred this little pony and see her do so well. I would venture to say that
she is probably one of a handfull of fjords that have made it big on the
A-rated circuit shows and for that you should be very proud. (Carol's
note: "We certainly are Betsy, proud of our horse, and very very proud of
you

seem to move back aways from it. The cap on the chimney will work. I used
to find bats in my wood insert when I opened it but they have all moved out
