I would not even think of brushing out that hair now. It is still
winter her with 3 to 4 inches of new snow coming down right now. When I
do brush them out, I make sure I stand up wind from the hair that blows
away.

The real shock, though, occurred when I was very pregnant with my older son,

Hi Rosemary,

I have a 100 gallon stock tank which is insulated with 2" blue
styrofoam panels under and around the sides. Then I built a plywood
box around that so the fjords wouldn't eat the styrofoam. It also has
a cover with a large hole at each end. I heat it with a 1500 watt
tank heater that sits on the bottom. It won't freeze up even in -55
degrees. of course this adds about $40-$50 to my electric bill in
the coldest months, even tho it has a thermostat.

This first half of March is the coldest on record, as was the last
half of February. Normally we would be having temperatures above
freezing or in the 20's during the day. but it only got up to about
-3 today. Sun is warm and d the Fjords are shedding, I see loose
hair on their backs. but it is too cold to go out and comb or scrape
the hair off.

Good post, and interesting topic, Phill !

When my light brown dun mare, Anvil's Linnea ( Leidjo X Lena * both
imported from Norway ) did her Conformation Evaluation it was noticed, but not
noted,
that she has a rear white hoof. Linnea also recieved a Blue Ribbon for her
conformation scores. There was a " guest " evaluator ( Arne Prestius ? sp? )
making comments to the crowd, about each Fjord that came through, and he was
not
afraid to say which things about them that he liked, or did not.
When it came time for Linnea's Blue Ribbon presentation, I was sure he
would mention her white hoof, Instead, he took some time... looked her over
again,
and finally said, " well, all I will say about this mare, is, that we should
be importing a few like her, BACK to Norway ! "
; )

I have also heard a funny story about an imported red dun mare from the
Unrau's. Anita said that she imported a beautiful red dun mare from
Norway.picked from many other Fjords she could have brought back. She
tried, but could
not, register her with the Canadian Fjord Horse Registry because she had a
white blaze ! s, she " had " to register her with the NFHR..!

   ; /

It is interesting to see when prominent Stallions produce random white
markings, it is seldom mentioned, although the offspring seem to be quite
correct.
Or maybe the dams are being held as the " cause " of the white markings.

Although I have none of it in my herd right now, Im sure that we will
continue to see these stars, blazes, hoofs. With the latest Fjord " fad " being
Uls

( white ) duns, red duns, yellows ect. it is sure to keep people " kissing "
those little pale spots !

Blatz of NY. Mary did a wonderful job in raising him, training him, taking
care of him. He is just wonderful, he'll do whatever you want and in a VERY
safe manner! Cheryl bought Luton from Ken Raspotnik a year or two ago and you
know the saying, "they are like potato chips, you can't just have one"
Well...soon she will have TWO. I know she will be thrilled with him, ANYONE
would!

Have several NICE Fjords for sale, if you are looking or know of someone who
is, check out my website to see who we all have on the farm.

I'm getting two more next weekend. Highland Prairie Tore, coming on
consignment, neat horse. AND I bought myself a new Fjord Gelding, Tomas.
Owned by Bob and Therine Gudknecht. I'm hoping that Tomas will want to be a
jumper! He has only been driven, but I know his calling is for becoming a
hunter/jumper!!! Have my first show of the season March 31, in Green Bay.
Hunter/jumper Show. NEED a Fjord to take there next year!!! My TB is pretty
awesome, but there is just something about jumping with a Fjord.

I comb/rake the fjords out in the corral, and , altho I do not leave
ALL of the fur lying in the corral I do leave a lot. Then watch the
ravens as they come and try to cram the biggest bunch of fur in their
beaks as they can, hopping along, picking up hair, putting it in
piles, then when pile is big enough, trying cram it all into their
beaks before flying off. fur falls out of their beaks, then try to
get more in, then lose more, finally taking of in flight to their
nests. Once in awhile, they will get intrigued by the long fjord
tails and try to remove some of that hair also.
