Mane trimming and styling, mistakes and more....
This message is from: "Linda Patorni" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I am new to Fjords. I have a mule and I roach his name with a pair of scissors. It works beautifully. I tried the same thing with my two Fjords. Their manes are much thicker and every mistake shows. My gelding stood perfectly still and let me create a masterpiece with a slightly raised black center and two gleaming white edges - not quite as curved as those I see in the Fjord Herald, but pretty good for my first attempt. My little mare, badly behaved, but vain, would not cooperate. The result is something between a punk rocker and a mohawk. Someone please advise me the best way to go about this. I have two questions: 1. Do I need electric clippers? In which case, there are so many to choose from, all over the map in price. I've never used them -what's the difference between clippers at $45 and those at $300. Please, someone, point me the right direction. 2. Would it be frowned upon in Fjord circles to clip the mane flat against his neck? It looks so much better to me. Your advice is appreciated. RE: Heaters & Electricity
This message is from: "Frederick J Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Do the heaters that you are putting in the tank have a three wire system and the ground terminal in the outlet is really grounded? If I get a short in the electric fence, one horse in particular (no shoes) will not drink out of the metal automatic Nelson Waterer. I can put my hand in the water and detect a very tiny shock that has traveled thru the ground from the fence quite a long ways away. Fred All Mail is scanned in AND out by Norton Anti-virus. Heaters & Electricity
This message is from: Emily Wigley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I, too have seen a few horses over the years who are really sensitive to big power lines. I know one dear Connemara mare who doesn't like one particular P.A. system in a covered show arena - she always balks, and she's not a very balky horse. The system clearly has some electrical field/feedback/something that bothers her, and we mere humans can not hear it! Such smart critters! I also knew of an empty stock tank being used as a hay feeder that got pushed too close to the electric fence at a friend's old farm. to the point of electrifying the feed tub! Not a fun greeting to hungry, shod horses in the wet of winter! Feed tank was moved immediately upon figuring out what was going on! Re: fishtank
This message is from: "ruth bushnell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Stale water laced with fish excrement.. sounds like swamp water.. maybe it could be bottled and sold? (contains soothing Fjord horse drool, etc) hah! The question that comes to my mind, if clear stock water lasts longer because it is handily maintained by the fish detail, said standing water would not be as FRESH; not only stale, but laced with fish ammonia and feces.. a horse might be disinclined to drink as much because animals are highly sensitive about weird odors. ..not to mention the poor fish, if a Fjord decided to romp in the tank-- tip it over, or should one be inadvertently sipped up! (gasp). Thoreau said, "who hears the fish when they cry?" =))) point being.. fishy water might illusively appear clear, but be more stagnant because of the time extension, and more foul due fish waste fallout. just musing. =))) Ruthie, nw mt US The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

This message is from: Mike May <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Just checking up on the Winter issue of the Fjord Herald that was sent out over a month ago. Did anyone in Canada receive their copy of it yet? We have had a few problems with the foreign mailings this issue. Usually the Canadian members get theirs before the US members do since they get sent out first class mail. tank heaters & fish poop
This message is from: "Lois Berenyi" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have a question about the fish poop, once having had an aquarium I hated to clean. What happens to the fish waste products. Do the fish recycle that as well as the algae and dropped grain? I have a comment to make about tank heaters. When we lived in NJ we had used them for years without incident except when one of the steers pulled one out and left it on the ground. But we had an interesting incident one year with a mystery. We had run the electric underground to the heater in the tub. The horses drank from the tub without any sign of upset. The tub was near the gate for easy filling or topping off. All the horses except one would go through the gate and the one who pulled back and went slightly wild had gone through that gate before. Then it occurred to us that he was the only one shod and when we turned off the heater he would go through the gate but when it was on he would not. Rather than re-do the electric we disconnected the heater and removed it and had no further incidents. After that we insulated the tubs and covered them and did away with all the heaters since each one would run up the bill about $50 a month x 4 tanks. RE: ? on how do you know purging for encysted sm strongyls worked
This message is from: "Bonnie Ehlers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> A have a friend whose horse appeared to be having stomach distress. That is, biting at her flanks, tender when touched in that area, kicking at her stomach, and showing an overall irritable attitude. Many of the classic signs of colic, but not going as far as rolling, sweating, etc. And these symptoms were sporadic over a period of time. None of the local vets had an answer. Her farrier suggested that she may have a stomach ulcer. I accompanied her in taking the mare to a vet in another town who has a scope. Using the scope we were able to see that she was infected with encysted small strongyles. Bear in mind, this friend is a very knowledgeable, conscientious horse owner. She has always treated her horses on a rotating worming schedule, doing everything strictly by the book, still her horse was suffering from this infestation. Which, the vet thought could have begun before she had bought the horse two years prior. Anyway.to answer your questionafter treatment, she took the mare back to the vet, and again he looked at her gut with the scope to make sure the job was effective. I would assume that the only way to tell for sure is to have a vet take a look with a scope. However, in one month's time the difference in attitude and her hair coat was also proof. Oh, and that fall Kristi won a title in the State Amateur Cutting Finals riding her mare. The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
Re: Gunnar
This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Jean, That sounds like something that can be fixed! And Fjords do have a lower hematocrit than breeds such Thorougbreds. so do draft horses. I still think a good Senior feed would be best as it is processed for older horses with worn teeth, and you could easily add oil to pellets. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, where it got a little warmer at +20 today. He found Gunnar to be anemic and has suggested adding grain, corn oil and a little alfalfa to his diet. His teeth are quite worn and the incisors need grinding. Our grass is coming on and I think I have already seen improvement. We had a Dell feed store come in and I bought grass hay from them. It was quite dusty and brown in the middle and we feel it is older grass, which means less nutrition. I am not sure if Fjords check out the same as other horses regarding anemia?
