A Support Funding for U.S. Trails The American Horse Council and the Equestrian Land Conservation Resource (ELCR), of which the AMHA is a member, is working to preserve the Federal Highway Administration Recreational Trails Program. If Congress does not take action this year, this program might no longer be available to recreational riders. The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) provides funding directly to the states for recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both non-motorized and motorized recreational trail uses. It was created as part of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 and was last reauthorized in 2005 as part of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users; however, this law is about to expire. The RTP will have to be reauthorized in the next national surface transportation program bill if it is to continue. Since its inception, the RTP has provided approximately $677 million for thousands of state and local trail projects across the country, including many that benefit equestrians. RTP projects consist of construction, maintenance, and restoration of trails and trail-related facilities as well as the acquisition of easements or property for trails. Although each state manages its own program, 30 percent of RTP funds must be spent on non-motorized projects like equestrian trails, 30 percent on motorized, and 40 percent on multi-use projects. In the coming months, Congress is expected to begin work on the next five-year highway bill. The American Horse Council (AHC), in conjunction with a broad coalition of recreational trail users, is requesting that Congress not only reauthorize the RTP, but also increase funding for the program to $555 million to be spent during the five years of the bill. AMHA is working with ELCR, and we need our members help to ensure that our trails stay funded and functional for equestrian activities, said Julie Broadway, AMHA executive director. AHC is urging recreational riders to contact their members of Congress to voice support for this program. Vet manners
This message is from: lewa...@aol.com Hi, I have read so many suggestions about the situation, but nobody had mention another very simple approach: Don't try to tie the horse or make it otherwise stand still. A horse that doesn't want to stand still will not be standing still by force of one person when there is fear envolved. If your vet is a savy person he/she would lead the horse in very small circles and give the shot while the horse is moving. It will keep the horse somewhat off balance because the neck is bend towards the person leading it and it is therefore next to impossible for the horse to hurt the person or bolt away. You would also avoid the build up of the tension because the horse is still moving which is part of the relaxing part of the deal. It has so far worked for me if somebodyreally doesn't like needles. Good luck Heike Lewandowski Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f

Gnats
This message is from: Ron Sherrie Dayton sunw...@jrcda.com Hi all, I have a question for those of you that have to deal with clouds of Gnats. I have flymasks with the ears covered on the horses so they are not being eaten alive but what do you do to prevent the gnats from descending on people so you can work your horses.I'm really frustrated, we've had a long nasty winter and a wet miserable spring here in the Northwest and now the weather is better we have to deal with all the gnats. Is there a spray that will keep them away from me as well as the horses? Any help or info is appreciated. Thanks, Sherrie Dayton sunw...@jrcda.com Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f

Re: Gnats
This message is from: Jen Frame jenfra...@gmail.com Sherri, vitamin B1 eaten by humans and horses helpsvtremendously in keeping all blood sucking insects away including gnats. I eat a B1 pill twice a day I feed my horses the highest safe dose (650 mg) everyday in gnat season and see spectacular results. It dramatically reduces the amount of topical toxins I need to put on me and the horses Jen Sent from my iPhone On May 22, 2009, at 1:45 PM, Linda Lottie horselo...@hotmail.com wrote: This message is from: Linda Lottie horselo...@hotmail.com Sheri..the Cashel company makes a fly mask for people. Re: Gnats
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Now here is something a friend sent me to control mosquitoes, and possibly gnats. It's worth a try! Quote** I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared. The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes.. And voila! That worked as well.. It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby. During the summer, I don't leave home without it.Pass it on. OUR FRIEND'S COMMENTS: I tried this on my deck and around all of my doors. It works - in fact, it killed them instantly. I bought my bottle from Target and it cost me $1.89. It really doesn't take much, and it is a big bottle, too; so it is not as expensive to use as the can of Bug-spray you buy that doesn't last 30 minutes. So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days. Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window frames, and even inside the dog house. ** I haven't tried this myself but I will: sure is worth a try, anyway!
