Debby,

Sensation makes a treeless dressage saddle for about $1,000 that
fits most fjords nicely. They have a more casual trail version and
a formal one. Super comfy!

They have demos you can try.

Since I trail ride, I use the Hybrid model.

dressage saddles

2009-07-14 Thread Debby
This message is from: "Debby"

Can anyone and everyone who does dressage with their fjords please tell me
what brand dressage saddles they use. I'm looking for one to fit both horses,
and both use extra wide trees...One of the horses does have a shorter back, so
thats something to consider. I have a nice saddle but it does not fit me, it
puts me in a chair position as I'm too short...I need the saddle to really
help with my position. But, and this is a biggy, I cannot spend 4000. I'm
being told by a retailer to get the one to fit my horses and myself, thats how
much money I will have to spend. I am an amateur rider, I love dressage, I've
finally found a trainer that is going to take the younger one in September and
October for undersaddle work, along with me getting lessons...I hope to haul
my gelding for lessons too, and if need be, put him with her for a month. But
I need a saddle. I have one of the wintec dressage saddles, too HARD for my
seat. I want it comfy for me and the horses and right position...is that too
much to ask for and not spend more than 2500.? I'd have liked the Vega
monoflap, but she said it wouldn't fit the fjords as it doesn't come wide
enough. At the most I will take lessons and hopefully hopefully maybe do a
clinic here and there...but I won't show...I do this for me and only for me,
and the horses of course.
So dressage or eventers, what dressage saddles do you ride your fjords in...
thanks all.

Hi all- This mare needs rescued for the boarding/feed bill of $700.00. I
tried to help her by bringing her home, but she needs a stronger, more
experienced handler than me- even to get her in a trailer and into a stall-
as she drug me down the road on my face, and all I did was re-inforced her
bad habits!! She is a pretty little mare/filly. She has gotten used to
"pulling away", has not been started, which is better than started too soon,
ALWAYS!!! So that ought to be appealing! However, I do admit, she is way
behind the learning curve, but, she is not in physical harm from being
started too early! I have seen her, and she is straight, feet look good,
and she should stay sound. Although a pre-purchase exam is always a good
idea (I'm BIG on those since I am not a vet). She only has until the end of
the month before she is out of there! I would hate to say, but her fate is
hard to tell. I fear it is, perhaps, Mexico?! I know some of you don't
have horses, but if you or someone you know is a trainer, please help her!!
These horses are generally not sold for less than $3,000. If you can take
her and sell her after training, you will save her, and she will likely have
a good home because she will be pleasing to a family. SHE NEEDS TRAINING!!
The woman who has to sell her and can be reached at finallyb...@wildblue.net

Hello

I have Shome Gerd who is coming two in August...
She is coming along in her training and has reached a height of 13h
Having her here in North Central TX, she has been doing fine in the 7 day
run of very high heat
When we got her in February, she waited about 2-3 weeks and started shedding
out for over a month.
She has done well, is very quick to figure out things, usually she is
introduced to something and maybe one repeat and she has it down.
It is fun and amazing to sit back and watch her figure out things.
We have had a saddle/synthetic on her back rigged to help her to bend her
neck and get used to everything. She is going to start working with drive
lines and long line soon.
She is yielding well and has taken to the tack without a problemshe can
tell if you are not paying attention and will play to that if you are slow
on the uptake.
She has not freaked out like other horses, we had a awful hail storm in June
with tennis ball hail on a pole barn roof, she looked up when it started and
went back to eating and was not bothered by it at all.
Now some of the humans present is another storythe sound was so loud you
had to yell to be heard and that was with someone that was standing next to
you.
She has learned fast to stand tied and even doing well with ground tying.
She is now doing great for the farrier and her hooves are great.
She does not like fly spray and we are working on that.
The first of May we moved to a different barn at our boarding facility, that
night she unpinned her stall and went to grazing in a small pasture area
that is unfenced. We have now rigged her stall with a chain and fast clip
to hold it shut if she gets the pin out. She did one more time, the next
night, the chain held and she has not pulled the pin since.

Welcome Kathy and Willi! I live near you in Columbus NC, and have two
handsome boys of my own; Woody is a 26 yo brown dun, and Asti is a 10yo red

as they had to miss the Fjord & FRiends Fun Fest in Blowing Rock this year
since I had a vacation scheduled.
You'll have to plan to go to the next year since Blowing Rock is only
alittle over two hours from you. Lee Hardin will tell us all about it in the
early Spring; it takes place in June and has lots of fjords and fjord stuff
to do.
I've also got a friend who lives nearby who went to the with me in 2008

one of her own! So if you ever want other fjordies to ride with, let us

A Note of Thanks

2009-07-14 Thread Robin
This message is from: "Robin"

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and my husband,
Michael, and also to thank and acknowledge some of the wonderful people that
we have come to know in the Fjord community . Although I read the Fjord digest
almost daily this is the first time I am submitting a post.

We recently purchased two wonderful Fjord geldings from Phillip Odden of
Odden's Norwegian Fjord Horses. Odden's Fenris and Odden's Gunnar are full
brothers and are exceptional horses. Both are very calm, willing, interactive,
intelligent and well mannered. We are thrilled to have them here and wanted to
express our thanks and appreciation to Phil for not only the wonderful Fjords
but also for all his time and the attention he gave to us. We were unable to
see either of these horses in person prior to purchasing them but between
Phil's accurate descriptions of the horses along with Else's wonderful photos
we felt very comfortable in our decision to purchase them. I also want to
thank Phil for his excellent ongoing communications and updates on how their
training was progressing.

My husband and I have had horses for many years but we have only recently
discovered the Fjord. About 8 years ago Michael had a bad fall off a horse
that had bolted. After that incident he did not ride again and was very
untrusting of horses. Last spring he came across an article in Trail Rider
magazine about rare breeds. He showed me the article and pointed to the
Norwegian Fjord and stated that was the horse he would be willing to ride. So
began our search for our Fjord.

One of the first people I spoke with was Marcia Pace of Fjordbergen Farm who
was selling a beautiful 7 year old gelding, Torlend. Unfortunately, at that
time fuel prices were at their highest and the cost of transporting him from
Washington to Pennsylvania was astronomical. After she sold Torlend to another
party Marcia kept in touch and spent quite a bit of time trying to locate
another Fjord for us. I was so impressed that this person that I hardly knew
would be that generous with her time assisting us in our search. Marcia
suggested we contact Phil whom she said was extremely knowledgeable about the
breed and had an excellent reputation.

As per Marcia's suggestion I called Phil. He had just returned from an elk
hunting trip to Colorado with some of his Fjords. It was fascinating to hear
about the trip and how well his Fjords responded in some very interesting
situations. Cool, calm and collected as you would expect them to be. After
describing to Phil the characteristics we were looking for he suggested
Fenris. He said that he was very calm, analytical and interactive with people.
We said we were interested and mentioned that we would be using him primarily
as a trail horse. Phil had worked with Fenris before and said he would
continue his training concentrating on trail riding. He wanted to make sure
that Fenris was not only calm on the trail but would willingly go through
water, brush, etc. Phil has a wonderful philosophy about training. He is very
patient and he respects his horses and they in turn trust and respect him. The
effectiveness of his training methods is very apparent in how well mannered
and responsive both Fenris and Gunnar are.

Fenris arrived last December and my husband and I both fell in love with him
as soon as he walked off the trailer. He was everything that Phil said he was.
I guess it was at that moment in time that two new potato chip craving Fjord
lovers came to be. Shortly thereafter we began looking into purchasing
Fenris's younger brother, Gunnar. Phil began working with Gunnar and soon told
us that he felt Gunnar was as good as Fenris and maybe even more willing and
quick to learn. I could not imagine that this was possible as Fenris was
perfection in my eyes. Phil continued to train Gunnar and began driving him
with his large Fjord Herger. He commented that they made a good team and
Gunnar was doing exceptionally well driving.

Gunnar arrived here about 3 weeks ago. I have to agree with Phil. As wonderful
as Fenris is Gunnar is one of the kindest, most willing and agreeable horses I
have ever known. In the time he has been here I have never seen him spook at
anything which I guess is appropriate since the name Gunnar means "bold
warrior". We have had him on the trail and on the road and nothing fazes him.
Within the first week he was here two motorcycles passed us as I walking him
along the road and he was totally indifferent to them. He is truly amazing.

Coincidentally, Marcia emailed me a few weeks ago a couple of days prior to
Gunnar's arrival to let me know that she was selling her 4 year old gelding,
Soren, who in fact was born on her farm. I had not been in touch with Marcia
for a while so although she knew we had purchased Fenris she was unaware that
the brothers were about to be reunited. The timing of her email was pretty
uncanny.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank Patti
