Bill,

I think that it is a great idea. Having my mare here at school with me
or when
we were in Florida, not many have seen or knew what a fjord was. And
it would be
great to get more promotion for the breed.

What a very sweet video (ad).  It shows
the power of YouTube.

The NFHR Board of Directors has been discussing the
idea of having someone
develop a You Tube "Channel" that would be a site for
Fjord enthusiasts to
post videos of their Fjords in action. This is seen as a
way to call
attention to and promote the versatility of the breed.

What do
list subscribers think of such a possibility?

Hello friends,

It's a wrap! The movie I have been working on finally came to a wrap
yesterday. Today they will take down the sets and clean up the camping area.
It has been a whirl wind of activities and adventure. It has been an
education and lots of fun.

The movie's working title is "The Woods", it will not be released
under this
name. The director is Matthew Lessner. It will be shown at the Sundance Film
Festival and released on DVD.

The film itself will be interesting. I was able to watch some of it being
made. I am not sure it is my style of movie, but then I am a good 20 years
older than the director and most of the crew on the film. I was originally
hired as a PA (Production Assistant) and ended up being the Animal Wrangler
and the PA for week two of the movie.

I am pleased to announce that we did end up using our Norwegian Buhund, ABLE
as "the wolf dog". and three Norwegian Fjords, BELLE, TINDEMANN and
TYRMANN
as "the magic ponies" in the movie. We also used two Minis, ACE and
ALVIS,
along with a bird, MIA. Oh yes. we had a goat by the name of Jasmine or
Lily or just plain goatee. :-)

The exciting news is that I have been asked to work on another film
scheduled to start filming in December. I am not sure what the story line is
but if they need dogs or horses, you will be sure that I will suggest the
Buhund and the Fjord.

This week I shall be in Seattle at the 3 Day Walk for the CURE. Breast
Cancer fundraiser. If you are in Seattle, come see the thousands of walkers
in this city. Oh ya. say hello to me if you can find me in the crowd. I will
be wearing a white hat and pink shirt. (LOL)

Hugs to all!

And slowly work your down to Henry's legs.

Hello All,
Looking for advice from Parelli Students who have Fjords.  I am
working on Level One with my new 2 year old.  He is smart - boy oh boy -
that's for sure!!!  and sometimes (well, quite often), I think he is
playing
me.
Anyhow!  when he is "unsure" of something, instead of the usual
spook that
I am used to from other breeds - Henry simply puts on the brakes and stands
there.  S - how do I use "approach and retreat" to get him
used to
strange objects, when the brakes are on.  We're talking really good brakes
-
so the good ole' approach and retreat lesson doesn't work at all!!!
Then ...
to continue the saga.  There are times where he will spook (or invert - head
high, back dipped) and so I go to the friendly game and that is "OK"
for him.
Other horses I have worked with, relaxed totally in the Friendly Game ...
Henry?  could care less at times.
So - in summation, if there are any folks
(could be non Parelli students who know what I am talking about too) to get a
braked Fjord moving through an object he wants nothing to do with - my ears
are wide open!!!

The fjords that my dad owns, get ridden in a Wintec All Purpose 500 and it
works quite well. But if you want to do flat work, the two other saddles that I
would recommend, would be the Wintec 500 Dressage or the Wintec Isabelle
Dressage. Any of the wintec english/dressage saddles will work. All are very
comfortable.

Do Wintec saddle owners on this list have any recommendations about a best
model for Fjord fit and rider comfort for pleasure riding -- trails,
walk/trot/canter on flats? I've zeroed in on a Wintec English saddle
because
of affordability and the versatility of the changeable gullet system, and
I'm narrowing down a model to try/buy. I think I've read posts
praising the
Isabella dressage model for dressage, which I know little about.

My drafty Fjord has morphed from winter roundness to summer svelte with some
low but visible withers and beefy shoulders. I think his new definition is
causing my wide and comfortable-to-me treeless saddle to move back and forth
and side to side on his short back, creating odd sweat/dry patterns and
rubbing off hair on his lower back. So we're going to try an English saddle
with a tree that doesn't get stuck behind his shouldersor take up the
length
of his back.

I presented him as a draft; clipped the goat hairs, muzzle hairs, pony clip on

or shine. But in mid-March we're in our first western pleasure open show.
We'll be in the arena with mainly AQHA's. How do we present a Fjord when in

jen frame <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: This message is from: "jen frame"

Thanks Sue. That is the bit I had intended to buy, and now hearing
that you find it works for your Fjord, I think I'll just go ahead and
order it.
Just to clarify: do you ride and drive in the exact same bit, or did
you buy a "riding" bit that is also a glory?
(Glory is a type of mouthpiece that is very similar to the mullen
mouth piece, but it allows even MORE room for the tongue than the
mullen--it is slightly more arched). I have seen many bits with a
mullen mouthpiece, but have never seen a Glory mouthpiece on a riding
bit, so I am wondering if it is OK to ride and drive in a Glory
driving bit. And by "ok" I don't mean OK by show rules, I mean OK for
the horse to use a driving bit for riding. I know this is a very basic
and naiive question, but perhaps the different angle of the reins when
riding versus driving dictates the use of a riding bit while riding
and a driving bit while driving??

It was Karolina King. A four yr. old stallion out of Canada King.

Hi Vic ! I have a collection of bits here. It seems that a one-size-all
approach to bitting Fjords has never worked for us. Some range from a 4 and 1/2
to a 6' bit, many styles. We prefer that the horse pick their own bit, so to
speak. Most of ours go OK in some sort of snaffle, better yet a french link
type
or butterfly for driving. Several drive much better in their Mullen Mouth
Driving bits. A COUPLE of our Fjords HATEHATEHATEHATEHATE any type of snaffle
bit, so we gave up on trying to make them conform to our way of thinking.

Kaiser, a broke to death, do everything gelding is one who LOVED his
Kimberwick. Do not ask me why, as I am told that most DQ's would wail and pull
hair
out over our poor baby having to have that old nasty Kimberwick bit, but Kaiser
would gape, fuss and generally be a total poo with any type of snaffle type
bit. When we donated Kaiser to a CA Theraputic riding program, " Riseing Stars
" we sent along his bit with orders not to change it. He is happy, so why mess
with it ? We even took hits driving him in it since it didnt match our
turnout with the others or they didnt allow it, but thats ok, he was
comfortable.

As far as fitting go's, please buy one of those cheap plastic bit fitters
from any tack catalog. They slip into your Fjords mouth LIKE a bit, so you can
see by the pre-marked slots what size he truely is.

Good-Luck ! Your horses comfort is worth more than trying to conform to
the majority anyway. DQ's wail away

Hello Everyone!

I have been looking into purchasing a Wintec Isabell
with the easy change gullet in the future (December,
when I get my x-mas bonus!). I think I have read good
reviews from other listers regarding this saddle. I
had an opportunity to ride in one once and was amazed
at how comfortable and well balanced I felt (compared
to my collegiate close contact, which as a fairly
green rider left me feeling very exposed!). I
recently purchased a Wintec western which I love! It
is lightweight and comfortable, but Western is not my
preferred style of riding for schooling. My filly (who
will be arriving late September--I'm counting down the
days!!!) won't be starting her under saddle training
until next summer, but I already know my English
saddle won't fit her.

So, if anyone has a gently used Isabell, or even an
a/p 2000 they'd like to sell around Christmas please
let me know!

Thanks!

wait to rebreed

Pamela Burian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: This message is from: Pamela Burian

Hi Everyone,

I’m mainly a lurker… but I have some Fjord related questions that I wanted to
get some input on from fellow Fjord lovers!
I am the horse program coordinator for an ‘at risk’ kids residential center. We
have a program here for the kids to learn about horsemanship and riding. There
are 8 Fjords here that the kids train, ride, and show. This year we decided to
breed 2 of the Fjords, and they both came up open…. (Okay now I’m getting to
the question part of the email) It will be the end of August or early September
before we can get the Mares back up to the Stallion for a re-breed, and we are
in South Dakota… What are your thoughts about late summer foals? Should we just
wait and re-breed next spring? I have Arabian horses at my personal ranch, and
we would wait until next spring due to the summer heat and the upcoming
winter…. But it seems like the Fjords are hardier, and adapt better to the
extreme temperatures…. We would LOVE to have a foal or two next year for the
kids…. But we don’t want to do anything that could possibly be a problem for
the horses! I would just like to get
some input from those of you that may have some Fjord breeding experience!
Thanks so much for your time,

Pam Burian

Brag Alert

2007-08-20 Thread Fiona Lindsay-Delfino
This message is from: Fiona Lindsay-Delfino <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

So I am "in love" with my mare, Erda. We had another great session tonight in
the round pen tonight.

Within five minutes she had joined up with me. I walked around the round pen
in both directions, and she stayed right with me. And then I started to jog
around and she picked up the trot. I was so pleased and thrilled.

And then on the way up from the round pen to the barn, I started with the
lead rope attached to her and then about a quarter of the way up, I unclipped
it and she stayed joined up with me. It was such a cool feeling to finally have
that kind of relationship with a horse.

So I kind of had to boast about her. Hope you and your horses are doing well.

it has really made a difference with my mare who was really pushing me

session with my friend working with her, I rode her the next day on a trail
and I thought I had a completely different horse - the difference in her
responses to my signals was that dramatic. It works REALLY well with my

Congrats on keeping him! Have you tried Parelli Natural Horsemanship? One of
the first things that they ask you to do before you get started with the
program, (the games and the riding), is to start by going out into your horses
field and sit with them or it, and just watch them, and observe their
routine... GOOD LUCK!!!

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear List,

Thank you so much to everyone who shared their experiences with me on the
list and privately. I am so grateful for your input and support.

After much (!) navel gazing and a long pasture session tonight, I have
decided to keep Monark. You know all of the pros and cons, but in the final
measure, I love riding him, and as a horse lover as well as a rider, I believe
that he needs a kind, safe home. It will be slow work, but I think that if I am
patient, he may be a more rewarding horse in some ways than Clyde who wears
his heart on his sleeve.

SO, I am ready to shut up/move on, and start enjoying this horse! Funny,
even making the decision changed my attitude toward him. He was actually very
curious tonight--I went into the pasture without acknowledging him and sat
down to read. Well, that head shot up and he was galumping over within 2-3
minutes. Happily took an apple and a scratch and headed off for a post apple
crib. I was there for about 90 minutes, and experimented a couple times with
changing position and turning my back on him. He watched me like an eagle
each time, and moseyed over 2-3 more times to put his nose on me and allow a
scratch. At one point, I was sitting on the ground and he grazed within about a
foot of me for about 10 minutes. Baby steps!

Once his strangles booster clears in about ten days, I will be able to
finally introduce him to Clyde, his new Fjord brother. I am sure that Clyde
will
be like gum on Monark's shoe--should be fun to watch!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi,
Those of you that are using Tri Country feed might want to look into Triple
Crown Safe Starch or a similar feed. It doesn't have any of the NSC's in it.
Which means it doesn't have any of the harmful sugars that all other feeds
have. There are some similar brands and you can get the name from the web
sight www.safergrasses.org. There is also a Timothy cube that doesn't have
the NSC's in it. I recently went to a seminar that was put on by
safergrasses. Unfortunately we feed our horses all the wrong kind of hay and
pasture. Our wonderful brome grass was designed to fatten cattle and does
the same for our horses. They should be on prairie grass, but that takes a
lot of land since prairie grass can't take the abuse of cattle and horses.
Hope this helps. Onna

Dear Genie,

Hi. I just had my horse do a three day trip from FL to VT. He has front shoes
only. I normally ship with standing wraps, but, because he was on such a long
trip I didn't want his legs all wrapped up, and have the issue of them not
being able to "breathe" if you will. I put bell boots on all four legs. And he
was just fine. I also did this when he went from VT to FL, only on the trip
down, I only put them on his front legs.

If she were to step on a piece of velcro and pull the boot off, it becomes
very dangerous at that point, especially if the shippers aren't going to rewrap
polos or any boots...It is better for them anyways to have their legs beable to
"breathe" if you will.

  Good luck...

I am good at wrapping her legs but would like the option to use

Hi List and Jacquelyn,

I have not seen a lot of basic information from any of the above mentioned
showman.
I would highly recommend a video, " Ride the Wave" by Chris Irwin. It is
very well done. He spends a lot of time demonstrating timing, bending,
counterbending, how to stop, reinbacks, what the bite is for, your seat,
legs, all the things that most other trainers just fast forward through.
Some times you have to step back to basics to get past a roadblock. He gives
good demonstrations on how to tell where the horses feet are, so you will
know when to ask for a turn. After viewing this, you can forget about
wasting your money on all kinks of bits, and or bitless bridles etc.

I'll be leaving for Pomona this weekend to see Irwin. I would like to talk
to him about the driving horse. And, I would like to get him up here for a
clinic, One thing that I like about him is he a plain everyday person.
Doesn't carry a lariat on his saddle, doesn't wear spurs, doesn't use a
crop, doesn't have a bunch of junk to sell, and best of all he wears a
helmet. [ people around here think someone wearing a helmet is a wimp,
horse people are macho ] Do I wear a helmet? You bet, I even wear a
protective vest. [ way to many broken ribs, to be stupid]

Also, Lisa Singer,[world class driver] will be there giving a driving demo.

Regards,
Jerry Friz,

Dear Fjord Friends. A year and a half ago, at age 65, I purchased a 3 year
old fjord mare. Because of all the comments that I had read on this list
and elsewhere about how kind, intelligent and "bomb proof" Fjords are, I
was not expecting any problems. I did not intend to ride or drive. I wanted
a beautiful horse, (I am an artist and also Norwegian) to keep our adopted
Shetland pony company and also wanted a horse to just to hang out with and
to be friends with. My beautiful Rika is a kind uncomplicated horse who had
been handled by caring owners. The reason I purchased a young horse is
because I wanted a horse that would still be young enough to place in a
good home when I can no longer take care of her. Sorry for such a long
introduction.
My plans were to just lead her around our farm, teach her ground
manners and perhaps even a trick or two. Even though I had a horse when I
was a kid, I considered myself a rank beginner when it came to being a
"horse trainer". I was not expecting her to bolt away from me on several
occasions, squeal and kick, step on me and lead so close to me that I felt
unsafe. I did some work with clicker training and Rika was fine when we
were in the paddock. She would also lead fairly well if we were outside of
the paddock as long as I was clicking and treating every few steps. I
realized that we were never going to get very far at this rate so I called
in an experienced trainer, whom I respect, and asked her to evaluate Rika
and tell me if she was just simply too much horse for me. The trainer's
assessment was that Rika was extremely afraid of her new surroundings and
that I was trying to take her way out of her comfort zone too fast - for
instance, leading her up our half mile driveway, out of site of the
buildings and through the woods. Melanie suggested that I order the Parelli
training tapes and proceed more slowly. This I did, but even Parelli did
not start at "square one" - leading beside me at a respectful arms length
away and not crowding me. So I ordered Julie Goodnights Leadline Leadership
CD and finally understood the tools that I needed. We have made great
progress in safe leading and now are starting the Parelli Level one
exercises. I imagine that most of the people on this list have enough
experience to proceed without assistance, but if you are a rank beginner
like I am I can highly recommend the Parelli program. Parelli gives you and
your horse a common language that you can communicate with. After all this
time I am finally feeling like my horse and I are trying to figure things
out together rather than me just trying to make her do things that she is
not comfortable with. Again, thanks for letting me post such a long
introduction. I LOVE my horse and sometimes when we are working on
something and she "gets it" I get tears in my eyes.
Sincerely,
Carol and Rika in Wisconsin

How did you get my email? do you have fjords as well? and do you do parrelli?

Just drop one or both reins for a second or two. The results will be revealing.

Has anyone ever devised a good system for letting a rider know when s/he is
balancing on the reins?

Just wanted to say that both of these mares are from Starfire Farm. Full
sisters, Starfire Malin and her younger sister, Starfire Kjerstin. The
parents are BDF Obelisk (Gjest x Stine) x EHF Heidi (Glengard x Freyja).
This had turned out to be an exceptional pairing. Both mares are
stunning to look at, with lots of presence, yet a calm demeanor. Big,
beautiful eyes and very pretty heads, yet balanced body conformation.
Malin was evaluated as a three year old and received a conformation
score of 81 with 8's for Walk and Trot and 8.25 Overall. We are
expecting a foal from this pairing again this spring, so contact us if
you would be interested in purchasing this offspring.
