Re: Stock trailer
This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I just hauled 3 Fjords 1500 miles in a stock trailer but the walls were more like three quarters of the way up. The trailer has a divider to create two 8' X 6 1/2' sections and two horses shared the front space and one in the back space. We were on the Interstate and they all were fine after two 12 hour days of travel. If it is real windy in the trailer you could put fly masks on them too. I put shipping boots on them to protect their legs from each other (and themselves). Mark McGinley Mariposa

This is a great picture of two of our Fjords, Alida and Asa. It's somewhat abstract (A lot of people don't see it as horses but see it as a landscape) and has won many awards. There is an e-mail address next to the picture on my website to contact Amy if you are interested in a copy. I took a digital picture of the poster so the quality of the print doesn't really show through. I'm not sure of the cost but I think it's around $25.00. Trip West and Mariposa Update
This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all Getting ready to head out to Montana in a couple of weeks to pick up our newest Fjord (Raintree's Katya.) Did the Rand McNally computer Tripmaker plan and it works out to 4) 13 hour days of driving! There is a possibility I'll be bringing two others mares back with me most of the way. Should be good company fpr Katya. How often would I need to stop and let the horses relax on the way back? I have a 16' stock trailer with 3/4" thick rubber mats. I was thinking that every 4 hours or so would be good (Maybe a long gas break... for the truck that is). This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello Lyn I am glad you got to see my web site. It has only been around for a few weeks and I'm still working out the submission process for various search engines. Alida was bred this spring to Rokida's Niklaus (Grey Dun) and should foal at the end of April 2000. Alida is a brown dun which is the most common color for Fjords while her filly from '97 (Asa) is a red dun. Odds are that her foal will be another brown dun but we won't know until it's born. Her foal would be in the price range of $3,000-4,000 (at weaning) depending on how it turns out and what sex it is. There is a lot of potential with such a good cross. I'm not sure if you saw that Niklaus won not only his class at the Blue Earth but he also won Grand Stallion! We were really happy to be one of the few breedings by him this year. Unfortunately he was sold to a breeding farm in Green Bay and that will be all he'll do from now on it seems. Our stalls in our barn are 14 X 10 and the Fjords do fine in them. That is when they are in them. They would rather be outside. We put them in when there is a real cold rain or if it's going to be real cold. Otherwise they are outside. One of our horses is a 15-1 hh Arab mare and they all fit together fine (Both Alida 14-2 hh and Asa 14-0 hh aren't that small). Good luck with your search for your daughter's horse. My daughter is 12 and she has the Arab. Alida is my wife's and Asa is mine. I'm the one who gets to wait to ride for three years! I'm half way there. Re: breeding 3 yr old fillies
This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hey Joel, Since I'm one of the ones that bred a mare to a "Big Gray" (Actually I think he's 14 / 2 hh) I feel I have to respond to your post. The mare in question is 6 years old and we chose a gray for his quality not his color. The odds of ending up with a gray foal are so small it just didn't factor in the cross. I think the first thing we liked most about the stallion was his conformation. He compliments our mare. She is slightly "heavy footed" and he seemed to float. Next we liked his attitude. He's not a wild stallion. We also considered size and he fit the bill there too. Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in. Mark McGinley Mariposa Farm Washburn, WI

Although it is a bit of the chicken and the egg... the only reason that stallions produce a lot of offspring per stallion is that there aren't a lot of stallions. If I had one stallion and one or two mares and bred them every year I think that I would search harder for the perfect mare instead of the stallion do to your reasons about how much the mare imparts in nurturing versus the stallions nature. Stallions
This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I was reading a book today (Horse Sense by John J. Mettler, Jr. D.V.M.) and came across a passage that I found interesting in regards to all the posts concerning "Back Yard Breeders" and the fact that there are too many stallions and that a smaller number of higher quality stallions would be better in the long run for the breed. He says on page 103 "...to what stallion are going to breed your mare? The female seems to be dominant in passing on most characteristics, as in most domestic animals: that is, some mares throw good offspring regardless of what they are bred to. However, one should never breed to "just any stallion". This is contrary to ancient belief that the male is the most dominant, only recently proven false." This seems to go against everything the Europeans are doing in having a few select stallions and little control in regard to the mare's quality. When Mr. Mettler states that the stallion's dominance has only recently been proven false, he gives no information as to where that proof came from. What do the more experienced breeders out there think? Is it the stallion, 50/50, or the mare who has the most effect in a breeding? Glad it only gets to 40 below around here! Mark McGinley Mariposa Farm Washburn, Wisconsin It is supposed to be 40 degrees ABOVE zero on Sunday!!

This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Regarding tractors I have a New Holland / Ford 1215, 16 H.P. diesel. It has a front blade (5' wide), a three point back blade or snowblower atachment and a midmount (underneath) 4' mower deck. It is small enough to drive right into the stalls and scrap them out completely. I have a 8" auger for the three point for post holes too. It has enough power for all of the above and is fuel effiecient. Having a small tractor makes mowing my lawn much easier (going around and under trees). I also have a field dragger (10') that I pull around to break up the manure piles. The only thing that I would like different is to have four wheel drive. I was thinking of getting a loader attachment for it but the cost is quite a bit. Right now I rent a 50 horse skidster with a manure bucket to move my pile of manure left over from the winter. A local implement dealer rents them for 125.00 / day. This is so much cheaper to do once a year than buying the loader attachment. If you do get a tractor with a loader I would recommend 4-wheel drive. two years ago we had 180" of snow and the little Ford kept up with a 400' driveway, the paddock area and various paths around the house. Re: foals
This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Susan, Our mare last year went 11 months and 7 days. We felt the foal kicking mostly on her left side slightly underneath closer to the back leg. You could see it from 10 feet away and we would run in to the stall to feel it. The kicking didn't show up until the 8th or 9th month or so. We were out of town close to her due date (if there is such a thing) and she waited till we got home to have her foal. The filly was born an hour and a half after we got home from Texas. This made us very happy because we wanted to do the imprint training with the foal. That went great too. It was warm here (Northern Wisconsin) too. My wife and I even got a trail ride in on Sunday. It was a perfect day. We even got back in time to see the Vikings lose! ... sorry I couldn't help it. Aussie Info
This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Donna, My first Aussie back in 1970 was named Maggie! She was a great dog too. I've always thought about naming another one the same to see if she turns out the same. There is a great book by Jeanne Joy Hartnagle called "All About Aussies" that I highly recommend. There has been a second printing that is available through Alpine Publications, P.O. Box 7027, Loveland, Colorado, USA. Jeanne is a member of the family that owns the kennel called Las Rocosa. Another book is by Liz Palika called "The Australian Shepherd" I don't have an address on that one (I ordered it through my local bookstore). There are also a number of web sites out there with good info. If you join ASCA (the Australian Shepherd club of America) you get a bimonthly magazine called "The Aussie Times" which is a good up to date source for what's going on in the Aussie world. Our kennel name is Mariposa and we are planning our first litter this spring. We have been waiting to get a great pair of dogs to start a breeding program and the wait has been 3 years. We have raised four dogs in the last four years and it will be interesting to be back in puppy life again. Our line of dogs are from the Rainbow and Diamond Aire kennels. The stud dog for this upcoming litter (his name is Blackjack) has the last five males in his line as champions... should be a good litter. Mark K. Your book and video
This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> My wife had ordered Carol's book "The Fjord Horse Handbook" and also ordered her driving video for a Christmas present and they finally arrived a couple of days ago. I am almost done reading the book and have watched the video twice. It's a very good book filled with lots of good information. Thanks for writing it. We are relatively new to the Fjord Horse scene but have been raising and training Australian Shepherds for a few years now. It's good to see that the methods we have adopted in dog training transfer to Fjords as well. I'm glad I don't have to start their training over. I can't wait to start ground driving in the spring. Carol, where do you get your harness' from? I've been looking for a carriage type driving harness for our mare instead of using the heavier draft harness that we now have. Also, can you get one that would adjust down in size enough to use on a yearling but still fit her mom? Thanks Mark K. McGinley Mariposa Farm Washburn, WI

Fjords in the cold
This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello all, ...From Northern Wisconsin. Today (Saturday) was about 2 below 0 (F), sunny and strangely warm feeling compared to the recent past. We spent all day in the barn mixing new grain and cleaning stalls, and scrubbing buckets. (Which is nice to do in the daylight for a change). The horses love it when we work outside with them. A lot of running and jumping and chasing the sheep around. Sometimes I think we have herding horses and herding dogs. With the recent cold snap (normal for this time of year), I was wondering what all the northern Fjords do when the temperature gets below 0 F. I guess what I'm curious about is when you let them in their stalls for additional warmth. We usually turn ours out during they day (6 AM to 6 PM) if the temperature is above 5 below and it's not too windy. We bring them in at night to grain and hay them and then leave them in. They do fine at night but I feel they would rather be out during the day (even if it is 20 below). As it is now we leave them in and are gone at work all day. Weekends are better because we can let them out a little later when the sun is higher. ...Just wondering what the rest of the northern herd does. We also were pleased to receive the registration certificate for our foal born last April in the mail today, thanks Mike (Mariposa's Fair Asa. She is out of Fair Acres Alida, our mare, and Anvil's Jon). She is doing great, about 650 pounds and almost as tall as her dam. She's a nice looking red dun. This is her "coming out notice" Also, I would like to thank the list for the round pen / longeing / halter ideas. This information comes in handy as we are planning a round pen as well as additional pasture space this spring. Thanks, Mark McGinley Mariposa Farm Washburn, Wisconsin
Equiflex saddles
This message is from: "Mark and Lisa K. McGinley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi everyone, I am looking for a new saddle for my wife and I was wondering if anyone has the Equiflex web site address. Are there any other western saddles out there that are recommended for fjords? It would be nice to find a dealer that I can see the saddle before purchase if anyone knows of anyplace in the upper midwest. (Dream on) Thanks in advance, Mark McGinley Mariposa Northern Wisconsin, USA
