I seem to have become some sort of expert?Magnet? for people seeking saddles for the unbearably wide, eg: Fjords, Halflingers and the various Morgans shaped like oil drums with legs. :-) These are lovely leather saddles, German made, and imported by a woman here in Massachusetts, that sell for just a little more than the synthetics I've done so well with. They come from a fairly normal/wide tree, up to a VERY wide tree. :-) I am told for instance, that the 38 pretty much always fits Fjords. I'd love to be able to offer them as an option. As with most saddle brands, I need to purchase a number of them at once to become a retailer. SOif anyone on CD-L is saddle shopping for a widebody, do please let me know! AT 5'7" and 165lbs, I've yet to be called light... LOL. Seriously, I did not feel comfortable in any treed saddle. Just felt like I was sitting on a hunk of wood. Tried lots of models, sizes, etc. When I tried the "treeless" (in quotes because it does have a pommel and cantle, they're just not bridged) I just said, "Yes! This is it." What matters is not the promotion of any kind or brand, but an open mind and willingness to experiment. *Listening* to the horse will give you an edge on picking tack that fits. It's too bad we have to use saddles at all, because of their inherent problems. However I don't think any of us possess the skills of our ancestors who rode bareback into battle! (Big discussions on the Endurance net, etc.) They wouldn't work for my big gelding at least as he is a slim body type and his backbone is more prominent..Instead of a flat surface or a channel down his back the spine is slightly higher. I am afraid that a treeless saddle would put pressure on his spine. (also I am not exactly "light") However for him, the Ortho-Flex saddles that I have work great! I keep wondering how the Tennessean saddles might work..made for gaited horses, they have a wider gullet, etc. The National Bridle shop carries them: http://www.nationalbridle.com/ Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, warming up to zero today! +15 tomorrow >I use the Bob Marshall "Treeless." Right after getting Nina in November, we had the saddle fitter out for some of the others at the farm. We have quite the wide variety of sizes, widths, breeding, ages and make every attempt to ensure correct saddle fit for every one of our "special" mounts. While the fitter was there she checked Nina's fit also. At that time we had the wintek (forward seat) with changeable tree on her using the very widest tree and it still wasn't wide enough to satisfy the "fitter". What she told us was it may fit after Nina loses a little weight and since she's such an easy keeper I'm hoping the fact she is working will help to trim her a bit. Right now we use her with a bareback pad so as not to hurt her back. A little scary the day I took her for a trail ride down the BIG hill (we don't call the farm Rolling Hills Ranch for nothing) and she decided to put her head down to eat. Thought I was going to slide right on down her neck, had both feet out in front of me like I was putting on the brakes (yeah big help that was). Didn't come off and laughed all the way home. Nina is what I believe is the draft type fjord. Looking at her papers today her dam is Rinda and her sire is Fair Acres Gunnar - her registered name is Nina III foaled on April 29, 1993, in MN. and bred by the Nelson's in MN. Nina is awesome working with my autistic students, always willing but also patiently waiting for the correct direction from her rider. She tolerates outbursts, bouncing and confused signals with a quiet attitude but at the same time makes them tell her exactly what they want. I really wish we had several more of her or rather of fjords-they are certainly thrifty (a very important item to a nonprofit), have great feet and solid build and a wonderful presence for those fund raising times. Sorry this was long, I'm sure all the "old timer" fjord lovers have heard this over and over. Robyn in MD STILL T-SHIRT WEATHER

This message is from: Anjer Farms <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi, I too use a Wintec with a wide tree. One of my mares actually doesn't need the wide tree so I change it. That is not as easy as advertised, but can be done. I have the all purpose saddle, not the dressage. I am extremely LAZY about cleaning tack so I think the synthetic is a blessing! Andrea

This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Karen, All of the Orthoflex western models look "normal" now, check out their website: http://www.ortho-flex.com I presently have four, two of the earlier edition before the panel system was refined to it's present form. They are western but do look "normal" Then I have two "stitchdown english style, (One of which is for sale...the 17.5 inch) and may get yet another...one of the new "softsteel" synthetic saddles which use a Leather like synthetic instead of the real leather. Anyway check them out. I signed up as an associate dealer since I have four (and it didn't cost me anything) and now can get saddles at a discount. But how many do I need? :) Anyway, check them out. This message is from: "Jon A. Ofjord" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Karen: Have you thought about getting an Ortho-Flex. Sounds just about like what you need. I purchased one last year-a Caliente model- and am thoroughly pleased with it. It fits all our Fjords, it is built for the comfort of the horse, it's very comfortable for me and is about the price range you are looking for. Another contributor to the list-Jean Ernest is also an Ortho-Flex fan and would probably be happy to give you another endorsement of their product (right, Jean?). IMHO, if all saddles were made with the Ortho-Flex suspension system, you could virtually emiminate sore backs in horses. Their phone number is:1-800-Flex-fit, you could ask them to send you their information brochure "Saddling for the 21st Century" Good luck. Mary Ofjord North Coast fjords
Re: Fjord Saddle Fitting
This message is from: "Karen McCarthy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ages ago (it seems!),I was looking for a western saddle to fit the fjords, and I thought I'd go nuts, as saddles "off the rack" looked nice, but weren't nice to the horses backs. I finally ended up having one made (luckily one of our landscaping clients is a great saddlemaker - can you say trade?)and have been happy ever since. I brought down 2 fjords to his shop for a tree fitting: a 3 yo gelding and a 12 yo stallion. 20+ trees and 2 hours later , we made a choice, but w/ some alterations, namely, the bars were opened slightly in width, and then shortened in overall length, and we "rocked" the front and back ends of the bars to avoid the shoulders and digging into the loin area. Also, the bars are more "dipped" in the centre, so as to fit thru their backs, not "bridge" them. 11 years later this saddle is still going strong, and fits an unbelievable # of horses. I'm kinda thinking of replacing it, but am a little apprehensive about returning to the original maker, as he now charges $2,400 as his base price, and he's no longer a client of mine. So, now I have to find a maker willing to work w/ me and the demands of getting the tree right, and still be within reason pricewise - perhaps around $1,800 ? Anyone have any suggestions for the NV/OR/CA area? Thanks much, Karen __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Re: Fjord Saddle
This message is from: "Lynn Mohr" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I'm sure a correct fitting tree could be made if one isn't already available. Then a saddle of the style, decoration and color could be constructed on this tree. Most premade saddles are made to fit the majority of the riding horses, and not fjords. The same is true for drafts. My son has two saddles I made him, one a roper and the other a fancier one. The roper which has a lower swell fits my fjord much better the other wich fits his rather high withered quarter horse. Unless the tree is correct for your horse it doesn't matter what style the saddle, who made it, or how much it costs.

I tried 5 different saddles (western) before I resigned myself to the fact that I would have to purchase a treeless. I bought a Bob Marshall by Circle Y. It works good for those "hard to fit" horses. You can find them in quite a few catalogs, but may have to special order if you want a 16" seat. It is a nice saddle that is extremely comfortable, but it does have a few drawbacks. Let me know if you would like more info... Brenda Simonson

OFFICIAL FJORD SADDLE
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello! I have some questions about the official Fjord saddle. Is it an English saddle? Is it a jumping saddle? Close contact? Or is it a dressage saddle? What is the tree made of and what kin of leather is it? Are key points like the billets hand stitched? Do you have any pictures of it? What is the price range? What color(s)? I am quite interested in it. Thanks. Tami
