Mare with Geldings

Hi Kim-
I have an 18 year old Fjord mare out with my 11 & 5 year old Fjord geldings.
My mare pretty much stays in her own area of the pasture, but often stands
with the boys. Surprisingly, my 11 year old gelding runs the "herd". She
will move when he says to move. However, she bosses the 5 year old gelding
around. However, mostly all is well in my pasture.
Enjoy your new found love for your mare!

Hi Kim-

I have always had my mares and geldings together. I have had a max of 5
horses to a min of 2 (one 24yo Paint mare and one 16yo Icey gelding).
Currently, I have 4, 3 are mares and the one gelding. My 24 yo mare is the
boss, and has always been the boss, even when she was with all geldings.
The only time I had a problem was when I was adding another Icey mare, and
she wanted to be boss and my Paint would not have it. So we sold her to a
great home.

Good luck, and I vote for you to keep the Paint!

Michele

My Icelandic mare did fine with 3 guys. Now we have a mixed group of two
Belgian geldings, one Paint mare, one Paso Fino mare, one Fjord mare, and my
Icelandic mare with her filly.

Hi All:

I just got my 8yo paint mare back after six months at my trainers where she
showed a dozen times and was alway in the ribbons, and several times show
champion mare. She has shown in Ranch horse, and western pleasure, english,
intro dressage, hunter jumper, you name it.
I was intimidated by her and did not ride her much when I had her here. She
was a broodmare and produced a lovely filly.
I have had her for sale for the past year and she has not sold; of course I
paid $6500 and was asking more, lol.
I rode her today in the arena and am blown away. She is the best horse to
learn on, and has such a wonderful attitude. Something I have to thank
Deanna
for as she was somewhat of a bitch when she was here before. (Of course she
was preggers, then had a youngin').
My question: I think I may keep her. She is a love. But I hate mares. BTW
she
was in season (raging) today. She got here yesterday, and we rode her in the
arena (three riders) for an hour and a half and she was awesome. But I have
three other geldings, and am negotiating on a fourth. I am downsizing to a
house/barn combo and had planned on only four horses. I could stretch that
to
five, but only if I can turn all out together.
Does anyone have a lone mare out with a bunch of boys? My geldings are:
4 and 5 yo Friesians, both gelded in the last year and one bred.
22yo Fjord and (probably) a 5 or 6 yo Fjord, both not recently gelded.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this. I DO NOT want to complicate my
(newly) simplified barn. But this girl is so nice, and, I guess I missed her

Thanks,
Kim

 Hi Kim
I have never had a "herd" but have had Three or four horses at a time .Had
mares and geldings and always turned them out together with never a problem.
I did find that the mare is usually the boss! But they all got along great.
My arabians , mares and geldings and Welsh pony always went out together
along with a mini gelding and mare. No problems... Now I have a mini mare
and Fjord mare and the mini is the boss... What a devil she is!!
When I have introduced new horses I let them get used to each other over
the fence for a few days before putting them in together. That way the
initial getting to know each other is over with..It has worked great for me.
I feel that putting strange horses in together right away is just asking for
trouble.
Good luck to you... I'm sure it'll all work out.
Beth
in Maine where it's beautiful and cool now :)
