This message is from: Deb Logan [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am an avid list lurker - today I spent all day at the barn with Henry, my 4 year old Fjord gelding. We did lots of stuff, ending with a nice ride in the raspberry field. The garage sale balloons were a good experience, and the kid on the bike - who warned me he was coming - I just bought a stock trailer, but feel it is height challenged - 6'5 - Henry is probably 15 hands, and everyone is telling me he will bump his head.don't want that, so its for sale, after I put a new floor, wiring, etc..but I don't want this post to sound like a garage sale SO I'll just tell you about the Meadowbrook, as it is a screaming deal:I have had it for a couple of years, and since I don't use it... Meadowbrook cart harness for sale - green, yellow pin stripe, made by Oregon Carriage Works, in very good shape. I will have my daughter Claire ask Marcy. She is at Briar Hill now. We will be going up there in a few weeks so I probably could stop in Bennington. I have also asked Claire to have Marcy try my Passier on Fjiona and see how the fit is. If she thinks it can be reflocked I may try that. Claire told me it would not fit. Yesterday I found out she hasn't tried it yet. I am sure it is because Marcy has her very busy. Lisa Wiley Hi Lisa, We have several saddles that you can try when you come to pick up Fiona. We keep close to two dozen saddles (all purpose, dressage, close contact, trail, Western) as no two Fjords are exactly alike and Saddle fit/comfort is absolutely essential to the training of a horse. (we also train those brown horses with funny backs) Miss Fiona has an unusual Fjord back so don't rush out and but a 36 cm tree! She is not very wide for a Fjord and has prominent withers! Her back is not flat - table top like many Fjordies. Currently her back is not one that would be appropriate for a treeless saddle, in my opinion. I find the treeless can put pressure on the withers even with padding. (We have three different kinds you can check out while you are here). We currently have Fiona in a Wintec, all purpose, Cair panels, MW tree. I would anticipate as she is worked more, her back will develop more muscle and she will need a wider tree. Already her back has changed some. I like the Cair panels and the flexibility of the changeable gullet of the new Wintecs. Although the saddles don't fit everybody in the barn (doesn't work as well on a shorter backed horse) They are a nice saddle at a reasonable price. If you prefer leather, the Bates have the same panels and changeable gullets, but are pricier. I'll most certainly try your Passier. And if the Passier is a close fit, I can arrange for a saddle fitter to come before Fiona leaves, if you like. (We have a Combined Driving Clinic here this week end and yes, both Claire and I are pretty busy!). We don't like to send horses home with out being sure their equipment - saddles, bit, harness, cart, etc. are safe and comfortable. We are committed to horses going home safe, comfortable and happy and happy owners, too. Of course, I hope you're planning on a couple of lessons before you head home, so that you are comfortable with how she has been trained. As for bits, Fiona is so far, most happy in a Myler comfort snaffle. (I may try several bits over the course of training a horse to find what they are most comfortable in, gives clear communication and the horse can stay soft) . Happy Fjording Marcy Baer Briar Hill Farm www.briarhillfarm.comhttp://www.briarhillfarm.com/ PS. Claire, by the way, is an awesome intern!!! We are incredibly lucky to have her here.

This message is from: Karen McCarthy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Michael, well, I think you have your Karen's mixed up..but while have you here, I can direct you to a neat, economical cart that is NOT a M.B. It is a version of a road cart, made by Kurt Barnes, KG Enterprises, Fallon, Nv. I had a modified one built for training andlowewr level CDE that I am VERY happy with. Sturdy, attractive, easy to balance, and it cost just under $1800. Course I picked it up as i live about an hour away, but still, excellent value for your money. I hate M.B.s for all the reasons folks talk about, but primarily the awful balance, and weight of too much wood. This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please consider bailing out as a last resort, in danger of losing your life. You and your horse will generally have a better outcome if you can stay in the carriage and provide guidance. If you are real new to driving, I would start out with an easy entry cart. They are much easier to bail out of if necessary. That being said, I too prefer the easy entry style vehicle as opposed to a meadowbrook, but I'm not keen on the little pipe carts. Just not sturdy enough in my book. A Fjord put to a pipe cart is an awful lot of engine to a mighty lightweight vehicle. This message is from: The Mercers [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi all, Boy, is it hot here! 105*, calm and sunny. Our 3rd cutting of hay is being baled as I type this. Wonderful hay weather! Do any of you use an assume saddle with or without a horn? I am looking for a lighter weight saddle than the Billy Cook Reindeer I've borrowed from my son. Anyone have experience using these on Fjords and/or recommending which ones/where to buy them? Also, I am in the market for a Meadow brook cart. Being a newly to driving and the Fjord world I could use some help being pointed in the right direction. I don't mind purchasing a kit. Any help is appreciated. I'm in Washington State. Thanks for your help! Taffy
Re: Refinishing a Meadowbrook Cart
This message is from: Krist Martinsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] HI PAT, on refinishing your cart it is necessary to thoroughly sand before applying your finish. I assume cart is made of ash and oak and if you have let it go bare in some spots the wood might be discolored and might need to be bleached out to get rid of dark stains. It is nice to use a vibrator sander on the large flat areas but will require a lot of hand work on spokes and other small areas. there are high quality paper made by 3 M that i would recommend as they cut faster and last longer. Start with a 100 grit and finish with 150 to remove sanding scratches. Either a good marine varnish or exterior polyurethane would be fine. This bit from an old wooden boat builder. [...] What do people think of them Meadowbrooks are a case of love them or hate them. Personally, I don't like them, because I am co-ordination challenged. The driver has to simultaneously hold up the passenger seat (which has to be folded up out of the way), keep good contact with the horse's mouth (because stepping onto the back step overbalances the cart to the rear, lifting on the harness belly band, making the horse want to move), meanwhile hoisting oneself up onto a moving object, with all hands already occupied. Then make the horse stand still while the passenger does likewise. Getting out fast and to the horse's head in an emergency involves a risky flying leap over the fender and wheel. I prefer something that's easy entry. Most meadowbrooks seat the driver somewhat low to the ground. This improves stability, but you'd better like the looks of your horse's rump and tail. ;-) are there any areas of concern in looking at a used cart? Look it over, to see if everything matches. If not, it may have been repaired after a wreck, in which case, have someone very experienced go over the vehicle. Wheels are always an area of concern---are they tight, and are the axles straight (which can include a downward bend at the end, if the wheels are designed to be dished). On level ground, the spokes that are directly under the hub should be perfectly vertical. What size wheel is best for a 14h Fjord? The seat of the vehicle needs to ride level, and the tip of the shaft should be at the point of shoulder of the animal. Obviously, the exact construction of everything inbetween will affect what size the wheels should be. Fjord harnesses and Meadowbrook cart for sale
This message is from: Debby Stai [EMAIL PROTECTED] Didn't remember if it was OK or not to post for sale items. Quickly (see if I can slip it in), a Smuckers leather harness, very nice shape, came with a 13.2hand Fjord mare and a synthetic harness, in really good shape for the same Fjord. These have hardly been used at all. Also came with a very nice Oak Meadowbrook cart, I believe to be balanced well, with spares box. Been stored in garage, hardly used. I'm located in midMissouri. For sale or I'd consider mini and/or pony carts and harnesses of equal value in exchange. Thanks. Debby

Re: Meadowbrook Carts
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi List, We are fairly new to driving, but we have a meadow brook cart that we just love. The other carts we've had have been easy entry and also some kind of homemade one that definitely wasn't easy entry. But our meadow brook has a spring box. The shafts attach to a spring that connects to the back of the seat. The seat itself sits on the springs that are just above the wheels. The front of the seat box connects to the bar that goes between the two shafts. It is like riding on a cloud. Our pony loves it too, because the shafts don't bounce on her either. It is the neatest cart we've ever ridden in. It's too bad, Lisa, that you got such an uncomfortable one. Has anyone else had that kind of experience with a Meadow Brook? Tami

I hate meadowbrooks, but some seem to like them, and if this one is nice, its a good price. Lisa Pedersen OK, OK, hate is a strong word...but this cold is making me CRABBY. For all who wrote and asked me WHY I do not prefer meadowbrooks, its easy. For years I wanted one to drive with the Fjords, they looked so beautiful with their natural wood, and fenders.BUT, once I got one ( new, amish made, all the bells and whistles ) I RODE in it. Big mistake. I was sitting down under my horses butt, and had to lean over just to see where the heck I was going. To make matters worse, the seat of a meadowbrook, unlike a road type cart, sit on the shafts, making for a most bouncy, uncomfortable ride. I was used to my higher riding Buckeye type carts, and a softer ride. I rode in my new meadowbrook, 2 times, and sold it back at auction. For those of you with Meadowbrooks, you may never know what you are missing till you try sitting up above your horses butt, and enjoy a smooth drive. Just my not so humble opinion of course. Remember I WANTED one for years too. Lisa Pedersen BTW, we LOVE our 4-wheeled, Bird-In-Hand Flyer. I highly reccomend them for the 4-wheeled single or pairs. Its finding them, for sale, Fjord size. ; O

Now when I see your posts, I'll know exactly where you are. Susan in MN where it is drizzling -- much needed --- we haven't had rain in forever. It's been a gorgeous fall but the leaves are down. Utah Fall / Barn Raising / Fjord sz. Meadowbrook Cart !
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi everyone ! Greetings from So. Utah and our wonderful fall we are enjoying ! Its 83 for a daily high, 28 low tonight. The Fjords are haired up like YAK's and are dirty pigs. My Belgian is not far behind. Supposed to cool off alot tonight and tomorrow, then warm by next week again. I guess last year for the deer hunting opener ( a huge event here, the kids even get off school, calling it Harvest Day ) they had 12 inch's of snow, and alot of folks had to be rescued off the mountian from it. So, we have been lucky so far, as our barn is ALMOST all up here, and will be put together in another 2-3 weeks or so. Ruthie, you asked about the barn.well, in California we had no need for one, and I happend to find this one for sale just before we moved. It is a long, wooden barn that we are splitting down the center and having a raised breezseway put over the existing top. It will turn a 6 stall type, into a 12 stall. ( 10 for horses, and a wash room and storage for harness/ buggys / hay ect? We had to dismantle it, and move it ourselves. Taking it down was not too bad, except we had to cut off all the corner fittings, as they were burried so deep that even a jack-hammer didnt move them. Putting it up wont be too bad either, VBG but moving it has been a beast. Every board, and each section has made it up so far, and most of the roof. The extra pieces will make it up in 2 more trips and then BARN RAISING TIME ! I looked into financing a barn but they are 30,000 to 45,000 for a 10 stall. We decided to go with white vinyl fencing for our perimiter and also inside paddocks and round pen, so there went any extra funds for a barn. I paid 4,000 for our used barn in Calif. and that worked for us. At least its paid for ! We shall see how it shapes up soon enough. Next year, we will try and add inside stalls ( yep its wide open ) and finish the exterior with new paint. This winter it will have pipe corrals inside with outside runs , so they can get in and out of the wind and cold, if they want. Alot of my herd is from Minnesota, and Kaiser's from Canada, so they have experienced winter before except those born in Disneyland. ggg The colt, Valjo, is haired up like a walking rugand seems to enjoy the cool mornings, running up and down his paddock with poor Kaiser, the babysitter trying to keep him contained. Kaiser is a gem, and like our Knute was, LOVES babys. Spends his day, herding around Valjo, and keeping him out of trouble. Been out with friends here who ride, and their horses are used to our carts now...the BLM land near us is driving heaven, and I plan on having a very fit pair for next year. Soft, powdery trails, wide and a million diff. ways to go.deer, ect. makes it pretty nice ! I will miss the way that Norco, Ca. got my horses broke for street work though.pretty quiet here when you get off of the streets ! ** Wanted to remind anyone who has or hasnt contacted me about the Meadowbrook cart, that it is going to Martins Auction TOMORROW Sat. to be consigned. I have a pic. of it to send by E-Mail, and its priced right to sell. All the extras, FJORD SZ. E-Mail me or call tonight if at all interested. I am keeping the reserve high tomorrow, and still may have it after the auction, depends on how many people want to fight over a cobb sz cart, and how many ( ? ) Martins may bring out.
