Re: Feed for obese fjord
This message is from: Robin Churchill Hay here is anywhere from $12-16.50 or more for a 50-60 # bale of Timothy, T/A or orchard grass. I pay $40 for a 110-120 pound bale of straight western or canadian timothy. Today I paid $24 each for 2 bales of some kind of orchard grass probably about 70 lb. I guess it is because we are so far away from where the cool grass hay is grown. Local hay which is some kind of Bermuda either coastal, jiggs or tifton is anywhere from $8-10 for about a 40# bale but generally it is kind of dry and fine without much nutritional value or at least that's what we get. Sometimes early in the summer you can get some pretty nice local hay. Also if you are using a weight tape on your horse, I was always told they underestimate the weight by around 10%. Well, my 17 h warmblood weighs 1230 lb on the weight tape. I took him to UF last month for something and they actually weighed him--1470 pounds, so the weight tape underestimated him quite a bit more than 10%. I knew he weighed more than 1230 but I couldn't believe he almost weighed 1500 pounds because he is not at all fat. Robin in SW Florida where it is hot, humid and buggy already This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com And I thought hay was expensive here! Probably about the same right now at the feed store as yours, but was $350/ ton at the growers last summer or about $12.50/ 70 lb bale. . Re: Feed for obese fjord
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com How big is a flake? The size of the flakes differ from bale to bale here, but currently one average 73 lb. bale lasts 2 1/2 days for 3 fjords with old Stella getting 6 lbs senior feed/day as well as hay. I'd guess about 12 lbs hay each for the younger fjords. And I thought hay was expensive here! Probably about the same right now at the feed store as yours, but was $350/ ton at the growers last summer or about $12.50/ 70 lb bale. Heaven knows how much THIS summer! I feed grass (Brome) hay. Re: Feed for obese Fjord - allergy
This message is from: Kim Manzoni Well, I have an appt for my vet to come out on Wednesday for my Quarter Horse. He has been coughing for 3 weeks. At first I thought it was because it has been SO dry here. Then after it rained, he was still coughing. I put him on Farnam's Cough Free and it has gotten a little better but if I stick my ear in his nostril I can hear him wheezing. And when I ride him, his nostrils flare and he coughs. I am hoping that its just an allergy and not something scary bad (COPD, Congestive Heart Failure). But he isnt rubbing or anything else, so am not sure. Just a dang wheeze/dry cough. I feed them all grass hay and Blue Seal extruded pellets. Plus a pelleted supplement. For the obese Fjord, I would take her off of grain completely and give her a supplement so she gets the minerals she needs without the calories. For my one that isnt getting grain, he gets Blue Seal's Sunshine Plus. -Kim in Maryland (hoping that my QH Toby gets well soon and it isnt something scary bad). " I am now feeding good grass hay, vitamins and antihistamines. Per the vet, w e cut the cup of pellets and she banged her grain bucket for 3 days... poor Soph... He said she didn't need them, and the scratching seems to have let up. In Denver, so wasn't bugs, fungus etc. We checked. She only started scratching after shedding out. Knocked a panel loose by rubbing on it! Anyone else have summer allergies?" Re: Feed for obese Fjord
This message is from: "kngould" I've taken lots of weight off my fjords by taking them off grain completely, feeding only grass hay (Orchard or Fescue) and giving just enough hay stretcher (hay pellets) at feeding time to mix any supplements in. (Usually about 2 measured cups each morning and night). What feeding regimen do you folks that have had experience with this recommend? She's giving her light exercise but is afraid to do a lot because the mare is SO obese. Re: Well, the vet says Friska is "obese"
This message is from: "Monica Spencer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thank you to everyone who responded to my message, both on and off list, and for all the helpful advice and information. I have cut out the corn oil and am cutting back Friska's pellets each day. She's still getting pretty much free-choice timothy hay, and vitamins of course. Valerie asked how Friska's personality is now that she's well fed and cared for... it's hard to say since I haven't spent much extra time with her over the last couple of months. She does have some fear of people (runs out of her shelter when I approach it with food - and I don't think running away from food is normal Fjord behaviour!) but her confidence continues to improve. Her basic manners are fine but she would clearly prefer to be left alone. I think this will continue to change with daily handling and training. Soon the weather will be better and we'll start ponying Friska along on trail rides - that will help to build muscle and fitness, and hopefully she'll enjoy the outings. She needs more work in the round pen with basic things like despooking and giving to pressure before I'll try riding her - especially since she's been so spoiled. Spring is coming, indeed - my Andalusian-cross gelding is hanging onto every hair on his little yellow hide but Friska started shedding the day after the winter solstice. I'm just not used to the extreme fur on a Fjord! One morning the soft ground had frozen overnight and there was a thick carpet of hair where she'd slept - it was all sticking up through the frozen dirt and I swear it looked as though a woolly mammoth was about to melt up out of the substrate below! obese?
This message is from: "Janne" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I think she looks just great. Great job!! WOw, lots of TLC. Now, she just needs the work out and she'll be perfect. I do not grain my fjords, a rare treat once in awhile only. Friska will not get skinny again, belive me, she will be just fine!! Congrats!! Janne in 45 below windchill tonight. Even all the fjords are tucked inside the barn. br
Re: Well, the vet says Friska is "obese"
This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Well, she looks good and a little fat, I don't think you want her any fatter! Not obese yet (I have seen some fjords who looked like a huge fat sausages) but I think you could cut down on the groceries, you don't want her to get laminitis and founder. I would cut the corn oil and at least half of the senior feed to start... Then see how she goes, get some muscle on her. Spring is coming, has she shed much? I keep my fjords somewhat slimmer than a lot I have seen ...I like to at least be able to FIND their last rib or two. And here in COLD Fairbanks winters mine are only getting at MOST 2 lbs senior feed,(or for the younger ones, Nutrena 12%) no oil, a handful of alfalfa pellets and 1/2 lb Calf Manna plus about 15-20 lbs grass hay in the coldest part of the winter, now I've cut their grain to l lb, no Calf Manna, no alfalfa pellets. Just to give you an example. I suppose some fjord folks would consider my fjords thin? but some fjords I have seen at Libby I would consider obese, and friends who have their fjords on pssture most of the time have really obese fjords. My Farrier has harped on the subsject for years...TOO FAT!, in danger of laminitis and founder. So I would REALLY be careful and not let her get any fatter, and if she is getting a cresty neck, cut down on the feed or she may founder. Just my humble opinion... Re: Well, the vet says Friska is "obese"
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Obese?? She looks great! What an amazing "before & after." I think vets are not used to looking at Fjords. When I bought Knute, he was supposedly "obese" and on a diet, while I thought he was thin! Since Friska looks good, you may want to discontinue the extra calorie stuff, just giving some grain as a treat. Well, the vet says Friska is "obese"
This message is from: "Monica Spencer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Yep. Obese. She was pretty skinny when I got her in November and I've been pouring the food to her... I've been thinking she still has a ways to go, but my vet says otherwise. She may be right... It's clear that Friska needs to fill out more, but it's muscle that's needed there, which I can hopefully remedy with exercise - ponying her up and down hills. I have a hard time seeing her as actually obese - I've seen lots of horses fatter than this. The vet pointed out fat pads above Friska's loins, on her croup, behind her jaw, and behind her elbows. She also says she's putting fat on her belly. (To me her belly just looks like a out-of-shape mare who has had a bunch of foals and has poor muscle tone overall...) So anyway I took a bunch of snapshots of her this morning so I could get feedback from you folks: http://www.yellowhorse.ca/friska/ (recent photos are at the bottom) What do you think? The vet wants me to cut off her corn oil (she's been getting 1 cup a day) and senior pellets(she's been getting 6 lbs a day), give her no grain except a handful of oats to mix vitamins into and stop adding a flake of alfalfa to her 24/7 grass hay. I'm quite willing to cut back on the groceries, but I don't want her to backslide... Monica in Nelson, BC
