If you want to make your own DataGrid header row and still retain  
sorting functionality, make each header a button with code which  
calls something like:


dg.content_mc.header_mc.hO1.onRelease();

"dg" is your datagrid, and the "1" is the index of the column. Note  
that's a letter-o before it, not number-zero.

I see what you are saying about enhancing the colors to envelop the

Any other ideas on how to do a multi-line header bar in a Data Grid

You may be better off turning off the header and creating your own
header that replicates what you want.  Then set up the datagrid to  
show

the rows correctly.  If you can't put all the information within a
single row, you may want to use the enhance grid and have it set the
back ground colors for rows that go together (i.e. rows 1-4 would  
be the

same record, rows 5 - 9, etc...)

Assuming you're supporting Flash Player 7 and up on a site, when  
doing Flash detection on your sites, do people just check for any  
version of FP7? Or did one of the minor versions fix some important  
bug that's worth checking for?


Or: Is there a document anywhere that lists what changed in the minor  
version updates to FP7?

For web-based invoicing, you may want to check out Blinksale. I've  
been using it for a few months now and have no complaints. You can  
custom design the emails it sends out, it will include a PayPal link  
if you accept it and lets you send out thank-you's once you've been  
paid. Clean and fast, but doesn't do anything *but* invoicing. If you  
send out over 3 a month though, there's a monthly fee.

Interestingly, your solution for the header is one that I actually resorted to, 
but then I lose all of that nifty functionality, like sorting, column size, and 
other bells and whistles.

I see what you are saying about enhancing the colors to envelop the rows that 
"go together" (making them appear as one row).  That's a good idea, I'll have 
to see how/if I can get that to work.  I just don't quite know how to "trick" 
that data into working that way - like, does it need to happen in Perl, or in 
AS, or both? :-)

Any other ideas on how to do a multi-line header bar in a Data Grid and 
multi-line returned rows, I'd be thrilled to entertain them!

[Flashcoders] Q: creating oval mask with 4 bezier points

Hi
I want to use the drawing api to create an oval mask whose shape is controlled 
by 4 bezier points.

To start I need to look into simulating bezier control points in flash.

[Flashcoders] Data in loaded movies issue

Hey all,

 

I am running into a weird issue that I have never seen before - hoping that
someone may be able to lend a hand.

 

To begin with - all files mentioned are hosted on the same domain server.

 

I have a shell file - that loads many content.swfs into it and is populated
from an xml

 

One of the files that gets loaded is a shell of sorts on its own.  This file
pulls a variable value from the root shell to decide which files it is going
to load.  

 

All works well in the test environment (ctrl-Enter) - always.  But if I run
the file generated by the test publish it will work in some environments but
not in others - it says that the variables that I am attempting to reference
are undefined..

 

Has anyone else run into this weirdness?

[Flashcoders] FileReference and ASP

I am looking for an ASP script to work in tandem with the FileReference class. 
I have searched the web but can only find mostly 
PHP scripts. My server has ASPUpload and SA FileUp available but am not having 
much luck getting the file to upload to the 
server. Can anyone assist in getting me on the right path?

Good luck Thomas.  From a high-level perspective, your "server flash
element" can create a localconnection to receive, and your "client flash
element" can do the sending.  In the data can be the type of action
required, allowing for a switch statement to route it properly, as well as
the data itself (XML or whatever).

Keep in mind that localconnections of the same name will break if both are
open at the same time.  If you have concurrent instances of your application
open, you'll observe this problem.

80% is a little high. Is that based on perception or on the latest
figures from Adobe?  Because as of the latest NPD Online - Worldwide
Survey Adobe publishes on their site, it's more like 69.3% in the U.S.,

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but it would be possible to  
make a
connection between servers using LocalConnection.  You'd have to  
ensure your
client swf was assigned an id to "authenticate" their application to  
access

the data.  There would have to be a security model, in other words.

Once again I've never done this so take my advice with a grain of  
salt, but
I'm sure interesting things are possible if they are sophisticated  
enough to
drop a crossdomain.xml to give you the ability to distribute  
components that

interact with your data.

In this case I have to say Flash would make a compelling choice for your
idea.

thanks mikeIm still digging into finding out if it can do what i  
want.  I think it can - but I just dont know the implementation  
details or the subtle security issues that cause communication to  
flash to be difficult.


Basically if I can push some data thru to the client using either XML  
or another method - and recieve data back to my servers - then Im set.


The only other issues i have to research are security of data - and  
security of swf files for decompile -- which I saw was possibly with  
an encryption software.

The Skills Lab is kitted out with enough CPU's for us all to play with,

Shame on you readers, this has nothing to do with the raincoat brigade!

A new Flash developers group, FlashCodersBrighton (FCB), is being
established in the city to bring together users of the software and
create a knowledge sharing network.  FCB, who have no intention of
exposing themselves, will meet fortnightly at City College, Brighton and
Hove, in Pelham Street.

They hope to attract all levels of Flash enthusiasts, from the casual
hobbyist to the Flash professional and this diversity will make for some
exciting discussions. The first of its kind in the area, the group was
inspired by FlashCodersNewYork (_www.flashcodersny.org
_) and intends to maintain close contact
with the American network through the mutual sharing of ideas and
information from the meetings.

The group aims to cultivate a Flash programming community that will
raise standards and inspire, further enhancing Brighton's reputation as
a centre of excellence in the field of Digital Media.

The meetings will cover a wide range of topics. Some will feature
high-profile guest speakers from the Flash community; others will be
more informal discussions and an opportunity for information sharing.
They aim to cover the latest developments in software such as AS3 and
Flex, and more inspirational areas such as particle systems, animation
and physics simulations. The first meeting will be on the 6th of June,
and registration will be required before attending. For more information

You may be better off turning off the header and creating your own
header that replicates what you want.  Then set up the datagrid to show
the rows correctly.  If you can't put all the information within a
single row, you may want to use the enhance grid and have it set the
back ground colors for rows that go together (i.e. rows 1-4 would be the
same record, rows 5 - 9, etc...)

specifically for designers/artists to show off work in a flash  
portfolio, but update it via a web interface - they call it Ladybug.

Hey!  

This may be a bit vague - perhaps , but...  I'm trying to customize a Flash 
DataGrid Component so that it can have "X" rows of displayed text in a column, 
in the header bar, and return "X" rows of returned, related data, all within a 
single "row" of a returned query...  Did that make any sense?  I guess I need 
to know how to get a line/carriage return into my actionscript - or Perl -  
(prolly something really obvious) without the code showing up in the displayed 
text?I'm using Flash Remoting and Perl w/MYSQL for my DB.

I hope this doesn't get too scrambled in the process...  Here's sort of what 
I'm trying to achieve:

[Flashcoders] How to remove indent for LI with CSS?

Hello all,

I'm trying to  remove indent for  elements in html textfield (MX
2004). Client wants this.

In "normal" HTML/CSS we can just write:
   li {margin-left: 0;}

Seems in Flash this indent for LI is hard-built-in, at least I can't
find a way to get rid of it.

I'm not considered dirty tricks like "move all textfield to the left
and set 'margin-left: X' for all non-LI elements"... so far.

I'd appreciate any help in this issue.

what is the problem of using an external preloader-swf ? that way you don't have to worry 
about such things.


btw: this question comes so often i can't count, would you mind digging the archive next 
time you prepare to ask a question ?

I begun to make a very simple one, since I don´t have much spare time do
dedicate to it. I used the imageviewer class form Colin Mock as basis
and one ComboBox e the ListBox.

the most interesting to me is the ASP app which reads de directories and
files below where it is and generates an XML file, in a way you don´t have
to type anything, is just a matter of naming diretories and files according
to your taste.

I intend to turn it more pro when I have time and include auto icon
generator, renaming the files, cropping and resizig and so on ...

[Flashcoders] Trap key input

[Danny Kodicek]

Is there a sensible way to trap key input into an input field? I'm looking 
for an equivalent to something like this in Director:


on keyDown me
   if ("abcde" contains the key) then pass
   if the key = backspace then alert("can't delete")
   if the key = return then go next
end

I know it's possible to restrict key input with TextField.restrict, but I'm 
looking for something a bit more flexible than that. What I've been doing up 
to now is to listen for an onChanged event, undo the change, then do what I 
want to do, which is working but seems like an awful waste of resources!


Now I think about it, perhaps the best solution is to use 
TextField.restrict(""), and then enter the text manually at the insertion 
point. Hmm.

Ask the client for permission to use what ever you want to show. Make 
sure that the current client is clear what your role was in building the 
thing that you want to show. If you new prospect calls to check your 
reference and the client says that he does not recall if you worked on 
that part of the project, you will look pretty silly.


Ask the client to approve (or write if you think that they have the time 
and inclination) a statement in their name saying that they were happy 
with your work and would recommend you to others - this is worth more 
than a demo of some application that your next prospect does not care about.
Make sure that it is clear whether you have permission to use this 
endorsement on your web site or only in letters to individual prospects.


Provided your client has given you permission, you are going to be in 
the clear.
Without permission, you might surprise your current client when he hears 
from a friend (your prospective client) that you are showing stuff that 
you took from him. His initial reaction of surprise might cause your 
prospective client to have doubts about your integrity. You would be 
surprised how small some business circles are. Assume that all 
statements will be checked.

I am in the process of wrapping up a project and don't want to leave without
anything to show that I built this project the next time someone wants a
sample to demonstrate my skillset.  What does a developer traditionally have
the right to include in a portfolio to demonstrate to subsequent clients
what a previous project was capable of?

[Flashcoders] List variables problem.

Hi all

I have seen this topic before last year but i never saw the solution.

The problem is that, when i list variables, i do not get all the info i should 
get! like this:

So far i have seen this on 2 systems, both dutch XPsp2 installs. I have never 
seen this strange behavior on an english system.

Is there a solution other than buying an english XP?

I made one based on this code and it worked fine, the only trick being 
setting the rowHeight of the component to the height of the largest 
row you need to display.

A new Flash developers group, FlashCodersBrighton (FCB), is being
established in the city to bring together users of the software and
create a knowledge sharing network.  FCB, who have no intention of
exposing themselves, will meet fortnightly at City College, Brighton and
Hove, in Pelham Street.

They hope to attract all levels of Flash enthusiasts, from the casual
hobbyist to the Flash professional and this diversity will make for some
exciting discussions. The first of its kind in the area, the group was

_) and intends to maintain close contact
with the American network through the mutual sharing of ideas and
information from the meetings.

Hi,
 As Mike says, casting is used to tell the compiler that you're sure
about the type of an object - where the compiler would otherwise
report an error, because it's unsure.

 This is commonly needed in situations such as when you're using an
object designed for handling generic types to manage specific types.

For example, say you have a Zoo object, for managing animals:

class Zoo
{
 public function addAnimal(id:String,animal:Animal):Void;
 public function removeAnimal(id:String):Animal;
}

class Animal
{
 public function getNoise():String;
}

var z:Zoo=new Zoo();
var animalA:Animal=new Animal();
z.addAnimal("someAnimal",animalA);
var animalB:Animal=z.removeAnimal("someAnimal");
trace(animalB.getNoise());

And then you write an application in which you are simply dealing with
objects of type Dog, which are a subclass of Animal. Instead of
writing a new Kennel object, you just decide to use Zoo - after all,
Dogs are Animals, right?
class Dog extends Animal
{
  public function fetchNewspaper():Void;
}

The following code works:
var z:Zoo=new Zoo();
var dog:Dog=new Dog();
z.addAnimal("fido",dog);

But this breaks:
var dog2:Dog=z.removeAnimal("fido");

because the compiler only knows that removeAnimal returns an Animal -
it can't guarantee that it will be a Dog. Because you are sure what
you are doing - you are sure, right? - you can write the following to
tell the compiler it's all okay...
var dog2:Dog=Dog(z.removeAnimal("fido"));
And now you can call dog2.fetchNewspaper() and all will be fine.

If you're _not_ sure of the type of Animal retrieved - i.e. you know
it's an Animal, but you don't know for sure if fido is a Dog, you can
do the following:
var animal2:Animal=z.removeAnimal("fido");
if (animal2 instanceof Dog)
{
 var myDog:Dog=Dog(animal2);
 animal2.fetchNewspaper();
}

And now fetchNewspaper() will only ever get called if animal2 is actually a dog.

I hope that makes some sense. :-)

This may not be the best place to post this but..

A while back i was trying to write my own custom cell renderer that took a
movieclip as the content for the cell renderer (not a movieclip from the
libary, a dynamically created movie clip) needless to say it was a compleate
headache and many wierd and unexplained things went on. I gave up in the end
:P

Hi,

Casting is telling the program expeicitly what a variable it so that the
compiler doesn't throw a wobbler when you try to perform an operation on
said variable.

In your example:

var info:ClockUpdate = ClockUpdate(infoObj);

infoObj is probably defined as type Object? And even though you know that it
is of type ClockUpdate the compiler doesn't know, so when you try to do:

info = infoObj

the compiler will think you are trying to do this:

variable:ClockUpdate = variable:Object

and wont know what to do.

better then I.

When loading an swf library with bitmaps and vector stuff, the only
place where you can attach those assets is in the movieclip where you
loaded the swf in.. unfortunally.. :(

I have looked into this for some time, doing some research, but
haven't found a working way for shared assets besides fonts to be
usable everywhere.

Back on fonts:
In our projects, we use Bernard's solution for the fonts (not so
weird, because he's my collegue) for most control over which
characters are to be embedded etc. Which is a must when doing
multi-language sites (like this one we made:
http://www.masdesdames.fr/ ).
Together with stylesheets it can be really simple. We use font-family
terms like MainFont, or BoldFont, and when letting the FontLoader
parse the stylesheet, it replaces them with the actuall font name
loaded linked with that identifier...
So with just replacing the font libs, the entire site will have new fonts :).
