provide a very large 64bit integer to a webservice.
That's not good:). Ok well maybe i can get the developer to return/accept 2
32bit parts then. *twiddling thumbs*

Thanks again!

This seems to work reliably for simple decoration and composition into
homemade widgets. Don't know if it will help you with building Adobe
style 'components'...

function makeBtn():Void
{
   btnV2 = Button(btn_mc.attachMovie("Button", "btnV2", 0));
   if (btnV2.initializing == true){
   btnV2.watch("initializing", handleWatch, this);
   } else {
   onInt();
   }
}

private static function handleWatch(prop, oldVal, newVal, instance):Boolean
{
   if (newVal == false) instance.onInt();
   return newVal;
}

private function onInt():Void
{
   btnV2.addEventListener('click', doStuff);
   btnV2.setSize(WIDTH, HEIGHT);
   btnV2.enabled = true;
   ...
   btnV2.unwatch("initializing");
}

[Flashcoders] bandwidth detector.

Hi,

Does anybody have advice to do a simple bandwidth Detector" (Without using
any specific server - i.e Flash communication Server.)

I found this:

tml

but was wondering if nothing "better" has been done ?

Why this question:

I working on a web site, and I'm using videos or images as full screen
background.

But I would like to be able to have an idea of the user Internet connection
in order to know if background videos can be activated

Thanks,

[Flashcoders] Where to add eventListners in UIComponent classes?

2006-11-06 Thread Wade Arnold
I have a component that has a couple Macromedia UI components used inside of
it. I have found that if I add my event listeners inside of createChildren
after I have added the UI components the events are not added. I have also
tried to add the events inside of the draw method. In order to get the
events to work properly I have to add them into my onLoad() method. However
this makes it so when I load the component I do not get an accurate onLoad
event from the component as the event handlers have yet to be registered. Is
there someplace that I am missing that I should be placing all of my event
registration in anything that extends UIComponent?

Thanks;

Usually depends on the display space... on 16-bit displays you'll

Still, lists like this one don't need a separate application, and it
works exactly like I (at least) would want.

The information is important. I'll set it up through google. Thanks
again for the persistence.  ;-)

Usually depends on the display space... on 16-bit displays you'll see
undisplayable colors handled in different ways be different rendering
engines.

[Flashcoders] AS 3.0 - dynamically create object from library class

2006-11-06 Thread Dave Geurts

  I am trying to dynamical "attach" or create new objects from Classes that are
linked in the library. In the library I did the linkage properties and it is
using the "Auto Generated Class" feature. Before AS 3 days I would use attach
and eval to get this working. any ideas?

Working Code:
  var questionObj:MovieClip = new set1_1();
  inventoryPanel.addChild(questionObj);

Dynamic Code does not work on creating a new class from the library
  var questionObj:MovieClip = new ["set"+1+"_"+1]();
  inventoryPanel.addChild(questionObj);

returns-
TypeError: Error #1007: Instantiation attempted on a non-constructor

I'm finding the information there useful, however the Yahoo system is
extremely annoying. I receive individual emails from the group. It is
the *only* group I am on which apple mail does not thread, so every
email is its own island. In order to see the list threaded, I have to
use the web interface, which is more of a forum than a list. My
preference is for lists rather than forums for stuff I work with
every day.

Without threading, this sort of stuff doesn't make much sense, so I
stopped the email service. Now, it is *only* a forum to me. One with
ads, and other unrelated junk.

IMHO, Yahoo's "services" only impacts the Flexcoders list negatively,
and a regular old mailing list (like this one) would be better.

Still open for a *good* Flexcoders *list* ...

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash Lite - Could someone clarify?

Flash Lite is not available for Blackberry devices. The list of
compatible devices can be found at the Mobile section of the Adobe
site.

There are some Nokia's shipping with Flash Lite installed, however
most of your users would probably have to purchase the developers
version from Adobe and install on their own device.

You may want to look into delivering your content to Blackberry users
via the browser. Blackberry's browser is actually quite good.

Hope that helps,

[Flashcoders] Flash Lite - Could someone clarify?

2006-11-06 Thread Miles Thompson

First of all, apologies for being off-topic, but

I am the IT consultant for ALLnovascotia.com, a daily, online, business
newspaper produced here in Nova Scotia. Subscribers access
ALLnovascotia.com's news service through a Flash movie which provides logon
/ authentication, fetches the news stories and displays them. A series of
PHP scripts service the requests from the movie.

We have been told by some subscribers that "Flash is now available on the
Blackberry", and that is how they would like to read their news.

They may be good businessmen, but they are not necessarily technically
sophisticated. Available it may be, how accessible it is seems to be
another matter.

I have been combing the Adobe Mobile Devices site and looking at various
blogs, trying to figure out how Flash content is delivered on PDA's. These
are the conclusions I have reached:

1) Most of the content seems to be proprietary
2) A Flash Lite player must be purchased and installed on the device. I am
not clear if any owner can do this, or if it is controlled through a
network provider.
3) The network provider seems to control the availability of Flash Lite
content. It does not appear to be like regular Flash content which can be
dished out from any web server.

Are my conclusions right or wrong?

For us, the ideal solution would be to develop a movie which would run on
Blackberry, etc., so that subscribers who have Flash Lite installed could
click on the "Read the News on your Blackberry" link and access it that
way. Presumably this would be a Flash Lite 2.x movie.

Regards - Miles Thompson

RE: [Flashcoders] Have I got this OOP business right?

Looks pretty good to me! You might consider having the display classes
dispatch an event instead of calling a single function when they
close--then you can extend behavior more easily in the future, if
several things need to happen based on the same event.

In ActionScript (as opposed to Java), I think it's better to use a
property:

class Singleton {
private function Singleton() {
}
public static function get instance():Singleton {
if (_instance == undefined) {
_instance = new Singleton();
}
return _instance;
}
private static var _instance:Singleton;
}
// Elsewhere:
Singleton.instance; // Returns the only instance of Singleton.

Yes. EventDispatcher is everywhere in AS3.0, so might as well start
using it now.

a

Generally in the code that Macromedia/Adobe writes, event names don’t
have "on" as part of the name, but a function responding to them might,
e.g.:

WeatherManager.instance.addEventListener("windChange",
Delegate.create(this, onWindChange));

Or, in AS3.0:

WeatherManager.instance.addEventListener("windChange", onWindChange);

Well, that was the most important part.

You

This was an example of an enumeration class. As I recall, your code had
been storing the status of each Connect-4 square (red, black, or empty)
as a number (0, 1, or 2). The problem with this is that it's easy to
slip it a bad number (e.g., 3, 4, 5, etc.). One solution is to create an
enumeration class.

An enumeration class has a private constructor and a finite number of
instances, generally static constants (or pseudo-constants) associated
with the class. Thus, it is impossible to assign an invalid value to
anything that requires a variable of that class type.

Example (somewhat modified from my previous example):

class connect4.SquareStatus {
private function SquareStatus() {
}
public static var BLACK:SquareStatus = new SquareStatus();
public static var EMPTY:SquareStatus = new SquareStatus();
public static var RED:SquareStatus = new SquareStatus();
}
// Elsewhere:
var status:SquareStatus; // It is impossible to set this variable to
anything but null, undefined, or a valid SquareStatus value.
status = SquareStatus.RED;

Incidentally, you could skip the EMPTY value and just have null signify
an empty square.

In AS3.0, this becomes trickier, since there are no private
constructors. Anyone know if there is a recommended way to get around
this? (On the plus side, you can make the class final and the static
values constant, which is a major shortcoming in AS2.0.)

Would I get a fault if my connection didn't connect and a call was made?

var pc:PendingCall = serv.getData(Id);
pc.responder = new RelayResponder(this, "Data_Result", "Data_Fault");

Re: [Flashcoders] Q:Framework ARP vs PixLib

2006-11-06 Thread Rich Rodecker

ihavent tried pixlib yet, but as for ARP, you'll get more "mvc" with a few
extensions to the original arp package. There a few different versions of a
ModelLocator out there (the official ARP release doesn't have a model
implementation -- the commands queried a view for information to be passed
to the server, then returned some information back to the view), and there's
also the extensions found here:
http://theresidentalien.typepad.com/ginormous/2005/10/extending_arp.html

It's got an architectural framework inside too (mvc, frontcontroller,

(collections, xml, flv, sound, preloading, remoting package with no mx
dependencies ...).

try it for the fun! ;)

be able to receive a fault

import mx.remoting.*;

var pc:PendingCall = serv.getData(Id);

function success_Result(){
trace("connected");
}

function result_Fault(fault){

trace(fault.fault.faultcode);
trace(fault.fault.faultstring);
trace(fault.fault.description);
trace(fault.fault.detail);

I dont get a success or fault on connect and do not get a fault on the

Has anyone found a workaround or should I scrap using ExternalInterface

ExternalInterface will be of no use if you plan to let users embed your
SWF into MySpace profiles, as MySpace prevents all Flash<->Javascript
communication: enableJavascript="false" allowScriptAccess="never"
allownetworking="internal"

Re: [Flashcoders] preventing scientific notation

2006-11-06 Thread Jonathan Fung

That may be true, but flash and any other program is still limited by
the IEEE floating point specs double precision limits. Flash cannot
internally represent 21 digits without resorting to scientific
notation. If you add a stray '1' to your 21 digit number as the least
significant digit you'll find that the number is not changed.
i.e.
var number1 = 10;
var number2 = 11;

trace(number1 == number2); // traces 'true'

depending on how you're communicating with the server, you may have to
stream it in as binary data and write your own 'bigint' (like java)
class to parse it, or use a server side script to parse it into a
string format for flash.

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash 9 Player Issues

2006-11-06 Thread kevmc
Thanks for the pointers, the initialising was one source of a problem,

Another appears to be some stray graphic elements caused by the use of the
union/intersect/punch facility in the Flash 8 IDE.

It would seem that one or other of these tools sometimes creates an empty
graphic (no line, no fill, and does not show a bounding box when selected)
which causes flash player 9 to hang when it encounters it.

I found this by manually selecting all the visible elements in the frame and
hitting [ctrl x], the timeline cell still indicated some content though none
was visible. The frame content could be selected by dragging the selection
tool accross the whole stage (or just selecting the cell in the timeline) -
the properties inspector showed size and position info, but there was no
bounding box on the stage.

Once this offending graphic was removed and the swf republished Flash player
9 worked OK (until it came across one in another frame).

Something to look out for

Hi,
i can imagine at least two issues (had to deal with them myself after some
conversions), one is for/while loops that have become endless loops due to a
default initialisation or datatype that has changed from 8 to 9.
2, the handling of paths, which seems to have changed only a little bit, eg
._url returns forwards instead of backslashes (only local though).
This isnt probably it, but you could try to inspect one of the clips for
lusses etc.

serv = new Service("http://localhost/amfphp/gateway.phpd";,
null,"IstRemote",null,new RelayResponder(this, "success_Result",
"result_Fault"));

var pc:PendingCall = serv.getData(Id);
pc.responder = new RelayResponder(this, "Data_Result", "Data_Fault");

function success_Result(){
   trace("connected");
}

function result_Fault(fault){

   trace(fault.fault.faultcode);
   trace(fault.fault.faultstring);
   trace(fault.fault.description);
   trace(fault.fault.detail);
   trace(fault.fault.type);
   trace("---");
   }

I dont get a success or fault on connect and do not get a fault on the
pc either. When the gateway path is correct everything works but as we
all know things may not work all the time.

hello !

pixlib isn't targeted on games devt for a while, maybe till the beginning.
It's got an architectural framework inside too (mvc, frontcontroller,
hashcode factory, moviecliphelper, modellocator ...) + lot of features
(collections, xml, flv, sound, preloading, remoting package with no mx
dependencies ...).

try it for the fun! ;)

I have been using the ARP Framework for a while and I can recommend it
highly. I don't have any experience with using the PixLib framework but
from

what I read of the documentation it seems like it had it's start as a
framework for building games and that's where it is probably most useful
(with tools for doing tweens, measuring time intervals, and passing xml
data

objects to and from the server).

The ARP framework does assume that you are building more of a form based
application and that you are probably using flash remoting and/or flex
(which isn't always the case). But I do like it's implementation of the
Command Design Pattern which really makes it easy to get your head around
a

project. Basically the user does something to trigger an event, the
controller issues a command, the command carries out it's assigned task
and

returns the result to the controller.

RE: [Flashcoders] Lil' OOP direction needed

2006-11-06 Thread Ashvin Savani - Arckid
Marlon,

You may need to create following classes:

Playlist - to handle all about Playlist
NetConnection - to handle all events of NetConnection including connect
and disconnect
NetStream - to handle all events of streaming
Navigation - A complete class to handle all buttons (Play, Pause and
all)
Player - The heart of the player or say the main application
SeekBar - If required to display the current position of playback and
dragging etc.,

Redesign other subclasses if you required like volume controller or
scrub etc., if you really require them.

Hope this helps.

[Flashcoders] Flash and DHTML menus

2006-11-06 Thread Perdue, Blake
We're building a Flash T1 (top story box) into a page redesign. Directly
above the SWF we have a navigation bar that displays DHTML menus over
the flash content. We want to support as many browsers on as many OSes
as possible, but are running into problems. For example, Mac Safari
displays DHTML poorly:

http://www.nascar.com/wireless/
(roll over the main nav)

Adobe suggests 'transparent wmode', while others suggest opaque, neither
of which works well in Safari:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_15523
http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?cid=E5141

Also, the T1 uses intervals to swap the top story and we're running into
timing problems because (I think) we're using a transparent wmode, as
suggested here:

http://justin.everett-church.com/wmode/

Are there any work-arounds, or solutions that support the major browsers
(IE, FF, Safari, Opera) and also avoid the interval timing issue?

If you however just thread the numbers as strings it should work perfectly.

[Flashcoders] Searching for screensaver-maker

2006-11-06 Thread Roman Blöth
Hi folks,

I'm currently looking for a tool for creating Win- (and possibly OS/X-)
Screensavers out of Flash movies.
The important thing here is:

The tool should be able to create a subdirectory-structure with many
files, since this time the Flash movie I shall make must read many
XML-files contained in several subdirectories. This is a must; there's
no option this time for including all the external files into the SWF.

Does anybody out there know of such a tool? I'm just starting to try out
some tools available on the net, but as there are zillions of different
such tools, an answer here in the list might reach me before I have
found such a tool myself.

Any comment welcome,
Roman.

[Flashcoders] Q:HashMaps, Code Optimization and examples

Hi
Recently started implementing the PixLib Application framework. There is

through an array.

My question is, how many objects do you need to manage before you will notice
any opitimization?

Can anyone give some concrete examples?

Re: [Flashcoders] class reloading

2006-11-06 Thread Hans Wichman

Hi,
yes exactly. But it goes for different swf's as well. For example:
I wrote a test in which I compiled a.swf with a class printing 1, and i
compiled b.swf with the same but updated class printing 2.

Now if i load a.swf and then b.swf into main, main will print 1 / 1
if I load b.swf and then a.swf main will print 2 / 2

What I want is 1 / 2 and 2 / 1 respectively. Note that I know this is not
'good' programming, however i only need this to debug/develop quickly.
I can get the functionality i want by simply deleting the global pointers to
the class, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with this kind of
stuff.

I can create some kind of mark&sweep mechanism using the classfinder,
marking all present classes at a point in time to which to return to later.
Eg when the main system is loaded i'd mark all the classes, and before each
swf i load into main, i delete all classes that have been added by the last
swf.

Lowdown and dirty yeah, but if it worked it'd be oh so handy:)

I have used the flash to video encoder from www.geovid.com I think it is
probably not high enough quality for your needs, but you might want to give
it a try. The free version puts a watermark on the output, but there is a
very easy workaround.

Subject: [Flashcoders] [ot-ish] Screen recording software for Windows?

I'm usually a Mac guy and have lots of fun with SnapzProX, but I need
something similar for recording on-screen interactions to video files in
Windows. Preferably I'd like to be able to get big, uncompressed video
files out of it for later editing. Does anyone have a favorite for this
sort of thing? I've heard of Camtasia Studio, but it looks like it's
$300. I think my limit would be about $100.

thanks,
-josh

RE: [Flashcoders] Shared fonts, linkage and Arabic

2006-11-06 Thread Danny Kodicek

Yes, this is where I've ended up - although as I mentioned in a separate
thread, this has its own problems because setNewTextFormat is failing for
text set by .variable, which is my preferred method for making this thing
work. Still, I know it's solvable.

Yes, I'm just embarking on that joy today. It's a particular nightmare
because bidi text *does* work on the Mac, so I have to make the code
platform-dependent (and I bet some day Adobe will make it work on PC's and
break all my code)

Also, in my experience trying to use

This I wasn't aware of - can you go into more detail?

Thanks
Danny
