 Hello all!
 I have a general question about the Movie Explorer. I like it quite a
bit
 because we receive FLAs from our partners or third parties that have
code
 hidden in them at different locations [that nasty object(i.e . mc or
 button)-based coding that I tend to shy away from especially]. However,
when
 an mc or button is attached from the library it appears that code within
the
 objects is not displayed in the movie explorer. Is there a way to set
the
 explorer to display this code when present? I have checked on and off
all
 the options in the interface and have found no way to do this. We are
still
 using Flash 8, so I don't know if they added this support in the newest
 interface. Thanks so much.

[Flashcoders] MC xscale/width/yscale/height with MCL

2007-05-24 Thread Jonathan Berry

Hello all, I searched the archives for this, but could not find anything
close to it. I am using a MovieClipLoader and seem to be able to xscale and
yscale the loaded images from the MCL. However, I cannot set width or height
on the images; they actually disappear. I sized my stage up to 1000h by
1000w to see if the images were just being resized and set at an x/y off the
stage somewhere, but no images seen. Any help/insight you have on setting
width/height much to be appreciated.

[Flashcoders] textarea component not scrollable.

2007-04-14 Thread Jonathan Berry

Hello all,
Did a search on Google for this, but really didn't know what to search for.
I have a series of textarea components that are dynamically generated
through createClassObject as children of movieclips and at runtime they are
not scrollable or selectable. Hope this is not too easy, but I had this
problem before when I had a movie wherein I generated list components as
children of a scrollPane and I had to mess with the DepthManager, which I
tried again-but I would just like a definitive answer, O noble Flash
wizards. A tutorial or anything you have to help my search would be great.
Thank you in advance.

[Flashcoders] Lists in/out of ScrollPane

just the completely incorrect method? Do I use createChildAtDepth() or
createObjectAtDepth()? Thanks in advance.

[Flashcoders] Horizontal List - cellrenderer?

Hello all, I have googled this and searched the mailing list archives to no
avail (only found something on the built-in flex component). Can anyone
direct me to a tutorial or page on constructing horizontal list components
with images? Thanks so much in advance.

Hello all, I forgot to mention that the clip was added to the document

[Flashcoders] Stopping FLV Playback download

2006-06-12 Thread Jonathan Berry

Hello all,
I wonder if any of you could direct me to a resource that discusses how to
have download of a video in a FLV Playback component start only upon
interaction? I have a couple of videos on a page with other multimedia
available for download (Flash presentations on other HTML pages, PDFs) and
they are downloading at the same time so when someone clicks on the PDF
links they are trying to download them as the videos are downloading -
bogging down everything. If you know of a better way to do this as well you
could send me some pointers. Thanks in advance.

Re: [Flashcoders] OOP 101: Is import really necessary?

2006-05-25 Thread Jonathan Berry

I think what he is asking is if this is the same as import:
var myObj:mx.core.UIObject = new mx.core.UIObject;

I think one of the answers is that it saves on typing out the class info for
every reference. Any other benefits to import?

On 5/25/06, Merrill, Jason [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

So this is one of those things I wonder about. If I type a

When or why would I need to explicitly need to use the import
directive?

Because if Flash imported every class available to it automatically,
then your .swf files would be huge and unnecessarily bloated. Do you
really want the code to all the Remoting classes imported into your .swf
if you're not using them? When you include, the actionscript cotained in
the class is embedded in the .swf.

Re: [Flashcoders] OOP 101: Is import really necessary?

2006-05-25 Thread Jonathan Berry

I think what he is saying is that if you had a dozen imports or imported an
entire package (*) it would not include the specific classes until you
actually referenced them.

On 5/25/06, Merrill, Jason [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Err...that has not been my understanding at all. If that is the case,
then why do you NOT need to include your class files on the server with
the .swf? Since reality is you don't, all that code has to be in the
.swf upon compiling, otherwise, the .swf wouldn't know what to do with

Myvar:MyCoolClass = new MyCoolClass();

If it's not included with the .swf, how would the .swf know what
MyCoolClass is otherwise?

Errm - actually that's not such a good reason.

The 'import' statement doesn't actually embed a class into the .swf.
All it does is tell the compiler that when you type (for example)
MyClass, you are actually referring to com.fred.MyClass.

You could just type com.fred.MyClass throughout the body of your code
instead of typing import at the top of the file.

'import' is simply a disambiguation helper for the compiler. It's got
nothing to do with what code actually gets included in the resultant
.swf. You can prove this by typing:
import com.fred.* // Replace with some set of classes you're not
using in your current project

And recompiling. The .swf file size won't go up until you actually
_reference_ an object that belongs to one of those packages. As soon
as you typed:
var f:MyClass=new MyClass();

or, in fact
var f:com.fred.MyClass=new com.fred.MyClass();

The file size would go up.

So - in answer to RifledCloaca - no, you don't need to type 'import'
at all, as long as you refer to all your classes by full packagename.

[Flashcoders] Did Adobe/MM break loadSound streaming?

2006-05-19 Thread Jonathan Berry

Hello all, I don't mean to make such an assertion that Adobe/MM broke the
method, but a discussion board thread brought this question up in my
research. I have posted on here recently some code for a Flash MP3 player
for our radio station, but the reception has been spotty. Some people
receive the stream and some do not. It seems to be mostly an IE problem, but
I had read that the Flash Player does not recognize the headers of certain
streaming media. Is this true? We are really frustrated with this and now
are looking for another solution. However, I would love to fix this. So what
do you think/know?

I googled this, but could not find anything that would be of help. I am

What in the world is this? If you need me to post the code, I will, but just
wondered if it was something that you may have heard of. Thanks in advance

[Flashcoders] Restrict textarea

2006-05-12 Thread Jonathan Berry

Hello all,
I googled and read the livedocs and searched the archives for this to no
avail. How can one restrict carriage returns and newlines in TextInput and
TextArea components? I tried
input_ti.restrict = \u0020-\u007F; and input_ti.restrict =
^\u-\u0019;
but no luck with those. There appears to be some sort of carriage returns or
new line characters that are getting through. Hope you can advise or send me
a link. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Duncan. Will do. I had seen, but forgot about that property. It just
seems that player 8 loads much quicker.

[Flashcoders] Conversion to Flash 8 renders MP3 player useless

2006-05-04 Thread Jonathan Berry

Hello all, I posted this a few days ago and just wanted to know if you could
load it, but I found a problem that I do not understand. I just saved this
file, which was previously MX2004, as Flash 8 in the authoring environment.
I have exported for Player 7/AS 2.0, but for some reason it will no longer
play in player 7. Can you see if there is anything in my code that would
cause this? Thanks in advance.

[Flashcoders] MP3 Streaming Player check

2006-05-02 Thread Jonathan Berry

Hello all,
I wondered if some of you could check on a radio player I created for one of
our sites. It uses live365 and we chose Flash because of the cross-browser
compatibility. It streams from my computer, my home computers, and a lot of
other people's computers that we have tested, but for a few only does it
not. I am just looking for streaming problems across a wider sweep of the
possible user base.
http://www.amplifysd.com - if you had the time perhaps some of you could
check in both browsers as well. Thanks in advance.

Re: [Flashcoders] Are you a help vampire?

2006-04-26 Thread Jonathan Berry
I want to offer a basic counterpoint to this: what if the question is just
from a beginner, who has in fact researched a problem found the
documentation/resources incomplete in some way? Is it just because a person
is a beginner that you will not offer help?

Case in point, and be patient with me. I am not by any means venting here,
but I offered a question some time ago about the basic placement of
anonymous functions like btn1.onRelease =
function(){getURL(_root.variable_name,_blank);} and also asked about
whether or not such a function required the _root if it was in fact on the
_root timeline. I actually received some very nice assistance on this and I
appreciate the poster, since though I did discover that this was true
through experimentation myself, he did give me a short lesson on scope. I
had already learned about the Delegate class, but this basic issue was not
clear in my reading, so I would not know I had to use _root or Delegate or
what have you. I do know some Javascript and PHP and so programming is not
beyond me, but learning a new technology from the ground up is the way I
learn generally. I like to know *all* the aspects. So please permit those
who are learning and obviously trying the benefit of the doubt.

Another thing is further questions on the same subject. In this same issue,
I had the question are such function assignments applicable to a button if
the code is placed before the button on the timeline? I got a no, of
course, which was a basic thing I had sketchy knowledge on. What I had was
an ad sent to us by a client wherein the previous coder had used on()
handlers on the clips and I was trying to rewrite it to include the
anonymous functions and our variables, as stated before. When I wrote in the
code in a keyframe in the actions layer above where the button was
instantiated, it worked, but when a new keyframe in the button layer came
up, I had to re-enter the code there as well. This seemed like repetitive
work and my further question about this was not answered.

My point is, does this make me dumb? No. It would make me lazy however if I
did not research this. But this basic practice of where code should be
written and how often was not clear to me since the project was not working
in subsequent frames and the documentation I had read seemed to say write
and be done with it.

I suppose I am both asking this general question again, to help solidify my
knowledge, and also pointing out that this does not make those who try but
fail stupid. All I am saying is that I appreciate all your knowledge on this
subject, but please have patience with those who are trying to learn and
distinguish them from the vampires who ask questions that are so general
that they lack any knowledge of Flash.

2006-04-26 Thread Jonathan Berry
Yes, I forgot to change the subject line to ask my question as well. I was
not referring to the article, but to the reaction to people who ask for help
in general.

On 4/26/06, elibol [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Wholy crap Jonathan I give you an E for (E)xcellent thesis. I didn't have

 I believe this point is important to emphasize:

 This is autonomous behavior. Again, we shouldn't hate the Help Vampire.
 Or
 stake them. They know not what they do, only that they are driven to do
 it,
 and I believe they can be saved.

[Flashcoders] General question about placement of code

2006-04-26 Thread Jonathan Berry
My apologies for the message with the incorrect subject.

From the prior e-mail: Why wouldn't function assignments on the main
timeline applicable to a button/clip, etc., placed on the same frame (in an
actions layer of course) not be applicable in subsequent keyframes of the
button/clip? What I had was an ad sent to us by a client wherein the
previous coder had used on() handlers on the clips and I was trying to
rewrite it to include anonymous functions. However, when a new keyframe in
the button layer came up, I had to re-enter the code there as well. This
seemed like repetitive work. Can someone explain this basic functionality to
me?

I have a problem, which I believe is on topic, but check me if not, with
some ads on our site that are loading external movies and when they do the
alignment on the page is tweaked - but only in IE. We have them loading in
with a proper alignment as gifs, but there is an empty flash movie loaded in
by javascript that immediately loads in an external swf, which promptly
moves left in IE. I don't have a page for you to look at as these are not on
the site yet, though the urgency of this is pressing since the advertisers
are calling us everyday. I have tried using javascript to remove the ad and
place it in a properly-aligned table using DOM methods, but when the
external movies load both the ads shift position. Do you have any knowledge
on ensuring proper alignment of Flash ads in IE or are there issues
regarding this browser and externally-loaded movies? Thanks.

[Flashcoders] Re: Timeline coding

2006-04-18 Thread Jonathan Berry
I just had a thought on this. Perhaps I just need _root.variableName inside
the getURL since we are using a variable returned from FlashVars. Are
anonymous functions such as clip_mc.btn1_btn.onRelease = function(){}
subject to scoping issues?

On 4/17/06, Jonathan Berry [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 should place it in a central location, so I set my code in the timeline

 sometimes buttons do not react unless the onRelease event handler is in the
 same frame as where the movie stops. Is this correct? Do actions have to be
 in same frame as where the movie stops and you want the interactivity?
 Though I wanted to get the answer to this general question, what I have
 specifically is a movieclip with buttons inside of it. I have tried putting
 the code for these buttons in the first frame of the main timeline or in the
 last frame of the main timeline, where this movieclip is instantiated. But
 neither method works.

 I use something like this: clip_mc.btn1_btn.onRelease =
 function(){getURL(etcetcetc.);};
 Where should one place this code? Are actions present in the first frame
 of the main timeline applicable to all subsequent frames, unless
 overwritten? In case you wish to know, the buttons and movieclips do have
 instance names.

 Thanks in advance.

Re: [Flashcoders] Re: Timeline coding

2006-04-18 Thread Jonathan Berry
however you will not be able to execute any script
defined inside the movieclip until a frame has passed.

O.K. so I just wanted a little clarification on this. Say I have a clip that
appears at the last frame of the main timeline and an action there on the
main timeline applying to the clip. Will that action be accessible once the
clip has reached its say 10th frame where the buttons are? Thanks in
advance.

On 4/18/06, Grant Cox [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 For your first question - you will not be able to access clip_mc unless
 the playhead is on a frame where that movieclip exists. You should be
 able to access the mc and all child mcs immediately after going to the
 correct frame, however you will not be able to execute any script
 defined inside the movieclip until a frame has passed.

 With your second question, the scoping is not necessarily what you would
 expect. The scoping of the function is wherever you define it, for
 example having

 blah = 1;
 clip_mc.btn1_btn = 2;

 clip_mc.btn1_btn.onRelease = function(){
   trace( this );
   trace( blah );
 }

 will trace

 _level0.clip_mc.btn1_btn
 1

 when you click. Of course, you don't have to worry about the scope of
 _root.variableName, as you are providing the absolute path to the
 variable.

 Grant Cox.

Re: [Flashcoders] advanced flash AS 2.0/3.0 book?

2006-03-11 Thread Jonathan Berry
Thanks for the reply, Karthik. I checked the archives and came up with 136
prior messages in relation to advanced books but none that were current,
as in the last year or so. I noticed someone else just posted in relation to
a book recommendation and got some good responses, so it would be great if
someone would have some information on an advanced book.

 show you the methods and properties availabel to a component, like the
 other book that is just a reprint of the help docs, he goes into the
 flash component architcture itself to give you a better understanding
 of how things are working, and whats going on behind the scenes.

 He goes into this thing about XLEFF (XML Layout engine for Flash) for
 a little bit, but I just kinda glossed over that so far, since im not
 really interested, i just want to undersatnd the components
 betterbut skipping over all that stuff doesnt affect understanding
 anything else in the book.

[Flashcoders] XML not rendering in FF 1.5/1.5.0.1

2006-03-03 Thread Jonathan Berry
Hello all, I am new to the group and am working on a new version of our mp3
player (custom size for a certain feature) and find that the XML is still
not rendering in the textarea component in Firefox 1.5/1.5.0.1. This works
in previous versions of Firefox and in IE6. Funny thing is, the XML does
appear to be loading since if you press the play/ff/rew buttons below, they
work:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/citysearch/feature/566/

If you view the page below you'll also see that there is a flash of content
and then it disappears. The content is still there though since if you mouse
over the text area the hand cursor will appear when over. This problem is
also replicated in NS 8.1 and Safari. Thanks in advance.
