I'm thinking about purchasing some items from Flashloaded and I'd like to
hear what everyone has to say about their work and their support.

Any comments welcome.

3 days with no success sounds way too familiar... but I can do clips on
a circle, I think. With a clip in the library, this will attach it n
times (starting at depth d) around a circle of radius r centered at x, y:

function placeOnCircle(n:Number, r:Number, x:Number, y:Number,
clipid:String, attachTo:MovieClip, d:Number) {
// get # of radians for each segment
var segment:Number = 2 * Math.PI / n;

RE: [Flashcoders] Re: simulating mouse clicks

2006-10-20 Thread Kevin Aebig
I'm assuming that you have something other than the pointer acting like it
has control in the same way as the cursor.

I've done this before for some specific circumstances and it required hit
collision detection and checking for every possible scenario.

- Check for onPress and onRelease and onClick (custom handler)
- Check for dispatchEvent
- Add either a listener to the mouse, or to UIEventDispatcher

It's not a complete solution, but generally it should take care of a lot of
circumstances.

I'll ask the question a different way: what are all the ways that a
mouse click event can be handled in a flash movie? (other than
defining an onPress/onRelease callback)

flashsql.Execute("SELECT * FROM client", "pros", "", "", "",

}

If you lad the swf at _level40 it doesnt work ...

I try this without success :

Hi Kevin,

It's quite simple actually. If you know the angle (it need to be in radians)
all you need after that is the speed of motion. To know the movement in the
x axis it's the cosine of the angle, for the y axis, it's the sine of the
angle so you will have the following :

mc._x = Math.cos(angle)*speed;
mc._y = Math.sin(angle)*speed;

And here is a quick example for that :

import mx.utils.Delegate;

var object:MovieClip = this.object;
var angle:Number = 45;
var DEGtoRAD:Number = Math.PI/180;
angle *= DEGtoRAD;
var speed:Number = 5;
object.onEnterFrame = Delegate.create(this, moveObject);

function moveObject():Void {
object._x += speed*Math.cos(angle);
object._y += speed*Math.sin(angle);
var leftBorder:Number = object._x-object._width;
var rightBorder:Number = object._x+object._width;

var topBorder:Number = object._y-object._height;
var bottomBorder:Number = object._y+object._height;

var initY:Number = -object._height;
var initX:Number = -object._width;
if (leftBorder >= Stage.width) {
object._x = initX ;
} else if (rightBorder <= initX) {
object._x = Stage.width + object._width;
} else if (bottomBorder <= initY ){
object._y = Stage.height + object._height;
} else if (topBorder >= Stage.height) {
object._y = initY;
}
}

In this code you can use Degree angles and then convert them to radians.
This will give you some kind of asteroids game type of motion.

HTH

Hey all,

I'm trying to do something, but the mathematics of it are messing with my
head.

I've got a clip that I want to move in a specific direction (angle) without
giving an end target. When the clip is offstage, I'll simply reset it and
trigger it again accordingly.

I don't need for it to ease or anything fancy, just move on a designated
angle.

Thanks,

But it sounds like you consider having a family or other committments
mutually exclusive to "passion" or even continued learning. My
definition of passion did not require neglecting family though
certainly after hours work is generally an indicator of passion.

Personally, I know of several programmers that have a wife and kids
and who dedicate time to them, that I would consider passionate
programmers, though our definitons may be diverging. Personally, I
consider being a well rounded person useful in the context of
developing software for human beings. And though, right now I am
chained to my computer in a crunch to release a product, I dont
consider "having a life" to be a detriment to being passionate about
anything - programming included.

Just so we're clear, I don't mean they simply enjoy their jobs. I'm talking

I've found that there are many guys fresh out of school who are like this
for the first 6 months to a year and than taper off. Than it's simply 9 to 5
and everything else is a waste.

If you know a lot of them, than you're living in a pretty unique place

have families or other commitments that infringe on their time.

I hear what you mean, as that has bit me in the ass a few times. I honestly
believe though that the people who learn out of passion, instead of
requirement, end up with a better understanding in the end anyhow.

Comp Sci isn't about Flash programming, or Java programming, or {insert
language flavor of the week} programming. It's not even about programming.
My personal observation, however, is that people who have a comp sci
background tend to make better programmers than those who don't. The best
Flash programmers I've met, personally, have comp sci backgrounds, for what
that's worth.

Personally, I don't have that background, unfortunately, and I have
certainly felt its absence at times; there are a bunch of things I've had to
learn the hard way as a result.

Just because you've got a degree doesn't mean you know what you're
doing. There are thousands of "serious" programmers out there with
degrees that are just mediocre. That piece of paper doesn't mean what
it used to.

That list of names isn't just a list of Flash pioneers, but talented
hard-working developers who continue to be some of the most influential
people in the business. Some of them had no previous programming
experience before Flash and now they're some of the best Flash
developers in the world all without a piece of paper that says they sat
in a classroom on some campus for years and without knowing so-called
"real" programming languages.

Saying AS1 isn't real programming is, IMO, unfair. Somebody programmed
a graphic adventure game in Flash 3 with inventory, etc. using a
turing-machine movieclip schema. It must have been quite a challenge to
code but it indeed was programming, and probably smarter and better than
many people who code in AS2 today are capable of.

I don't have a CompSci degree. I only ever took one programming class; a
one semester course for Director 3 at a community college taught by a
guy who wanted me to do everything in the score because he didn't really
understand Lingo. The rest I've learned by doing, reading and, luckily,
being mentored. If an employer doesn't want me because I don't have a
CompSci degree, it's their loss, not mine, because I know Flash better
than many people who claim to be Flash developers out there simply
because nobody told me what its limits or capabilities were, I found
them out for myself in order to "make the impossible possible" for
clients.  :)

RE: [Flashcoders] Software Development Position

2006-09-15 Thread Kevin Aebig
I understand what you mean in regards to AS2 application development. Until
MX 2004, Flash as a common mainstream application was pretty unheard of by
the general public. That's not to say it didn't happen though...

I definitely disagree with the first thing you mentioned about there not
being a lot of guys who used Flash as an application platform before AS2. I
can look at a lot of guys on this list who've been here for a long time and
helped pave the way for the modern Flash Platform.

Claus, Grant, Dave, Samuel, Jesse, Brandon etc. have been on this list since
I first joined up 6 or 7 years ago and posted several examples of
applications over the years to demonstrate the abilities of Flash. Heck even
I did a single large app with Flash 4 (Whatta pain!), 4 more with Flash 5,
and than a ton since with every other version...

The one thing that I do find somewhat laughable is the necessity to state
that a CompSci background is important. For all intents and purposes, by
education I'm a designer. I spent a considerable amount of time and money
teaching myself programming theories and best practices. To say that I'm
unqualified is somewhat insulting considering the effort it took and the
passion it shows.

Cheers,

I am all for job postings, but I gotta tell ya, sometimes they just
say silly things.

4 years developing flash.
must know AS1 and AS2
Software development person (programmed before flash I presume)
Background in other languages and systems
Familiarity with design patterns
Good understanding of basic database issues
Not a position for an artist or designer.
Must be willing to relocate to Detroit area.

Ok, first of all, most people who have been doing flash for 4+ years
are artists or designers. Almost no serious programming was even
possible in flash before AS2 so by defining 4 years you are
essentially insisting that someone *not* be someone who "has a
background in other languages and systems". I'm not saying they don't
exist at all, but it is such a silly requirement because it
inappropriately limits the pool. Of course insisting that someone be
an expert in AS1 is even more silly. Is this because their job will be
fixing someone else's 5 year old spaghetti code? Then the kicker is
that this person must be in the Detroit area or willing to relocate.

So in my mind, they are looking for the tiny pool of people that
studied computer science but were also interested in animation and so
dabbled in flash before it was "real programmer ready" and are willing
to move to one of the most depressed metropolitan areas in the US. And
I bet they wanna pay like 70-80k. Why cant people write intelligent
job specs. Oh and by the way I am not looking for a job I just find
this annoying that neither I nor any of the excellent programmers I
know (and I know quite a few) would qualify for this job.

I really wonder where some of these job specs come from.

Céline,
Take a look at the Nullsoft Installer (http://nsis.sourceforge.net)
which is a powerful & professional scriptable install system. I've been
using it several times and it works like a charm.
I'm almost sure that you can use it to deploy your .exe zinc app and
silently install the certificate too ;-) Plus, you can use an
eclipse-based environnement (EclipseNSIS) which will help you to test &
polish youur scripts before going to production!

Good luck :)

RE: [Flashcoders] does actionscript have something like sql's IN orLIKE ?

2006-09-14 Thread Kevin Aebig
Considering that index of will match all possible situations, I prefer to
split the string into an array using an empty space as the delimiter, than
loop over the results to check for an exact match.

The performance of this can be very good or very bad depending on the amount
of text you have to look into.

?

hello all,
  i have been lurking for about a month and I must say I am extremely
impressed and sometimes overwhelmed by the vast amount of knowledge on this
list.

  I have been searching for about a week for a simple solution to search
within a string for one word or two words. I am working on a quiz with
several fill in the blanks and I am sure my users will have a wide
assortment of correct answers but I am looking to see if they for example
input either "cover" or "time" in any of the text input boxes.
  Stuff I have tried so far

  substr - problem because i am checking for either I have resorted to the
below

  this.opened_btn.onRelease=function(){
 myVar=open1.substr(0,4).toUpperCase();
 myVar2=open2.substr(0,4).toUpperCase();
 if
((myVar=="TIME"||myVar=="COVE"||myVar=="DATE")&&(myVar2=="TIME"||myVar2=="CO
VE"||myVar2=="DATE")) {
 gotoAndStop("quizend");
 } else {
  gotoAndStop("quizend");
}
}
  I have also tried indexOf but I don't think I understood it because it
would pull any of the letters and make it a true condition(I left my
comments in this one so you could see what I don't understand)

  this.opened_btn.onRelease=function(){
 // toUpperCase() coverts the text instance to upper case
 myVar=open1.toUpperCase();
 myVar2=open2.toUpperCase();
 //indexOF allows you to pull from the string and -1 allows the word to be
pulled from
 //within anywhere in the string if you used 0 that would mean the string
would have
 //to start with whatever is enclosed in the parenthesis
if
((myVar.indexOf("TIME")==-1||myVar.indexOf("COVER")==-1||myVar.indexOf("DATE
")==-1)&&(myVar2.indexOf("TIME")==-1||myVar2.indexOf("COVER")==-1||myVar2.in
dexOf("DATE")==-1)) {
 trace(myVar);
 trace(myVar2);
 trace("success");
 gotoAndStop("quizend");
 } else {
  gotoAndStop("quizend");
trace("failure");
}
}
  any help would be greatly appreciated. I have an assortment of fill in
the blanks and some of them are phrases and I would like to allow for some
user differences.
  Sincerely,

  Patricia Britt

Subject: [Flashcoders] certificate problem in a desktop application

Hello,

I have a strange certificate problem with Flash8.
I am building a flash app that runs on local computers. The app uses
LoadVars and sendAndLoad methods to send and load parameters to a distant
php page in HTTPS.
I have configured the global security panel of the flash player to add the
entire folder of my flash application, and I have added a cross domain
policy file on the https servers that says allow-access-from domain='*'
When I run the application within a browser, the security pop-up appears
asking to trust the https location and once it's done, but when I run the
.exe file created with ZINC, no pop-up appears and the http status sends a
flash error message.
I have dicovered that I must install the certificate on my computer in order

for my application to work properly.
But can I ask every end user to manually install the certificate ? I think
it's not really secure to let them know about the https adress nor elegant
to make them do this.

My questions then are :
Is there a way in Actionscript to make the security pop-up appear within the

exe application ? Or is there a way to build an installer with ZINC and
configure it so that it installs a certificate (.cer) on the destination
computer ? or is there a more simple solution ? Will the registration of the

https location solve my problem ?

Best,
Celine

RE: [Flashcoders] {OT} Job Postings?

2006-09-12 Thread Kevin Aebig
I completely agree as well, but the initial problem remains: Finding someone
with those talents.

I consider myself extremely talented in those areas, but won't relocate.
Employers should definitely consider giving remote workers a chance to prove
themselves through contract work if they really want to get the best
qualified person they can find.

It's frustrating all around these days as finding a good company to work for
is becoming more and more difficult. I've turned down 3 job offers in the
past year because the companies either didn't seem like they were on the up
and up or I didn't feel like it was positive place to work.

I would agree with all that's been said - I couldn't have said it better

Finding the "type" of person has become the focus. We designed some
questioning that really helped us weed through the people that would "most
likely" be good candidates for coming up to speed. Then you get into work
ethic, personality etc. But at least you have someone through the door that
might work out.

I'd look at doing an installer. That would probably be on of the easiest
routes and would be guaranteed to work.

I completely agree. I've seen hundreds of good job postings that I was
extremely interested in, but didn't apply because I have no need to
re-locate.

The fact that I worked at home (Canada, eh!) for a company in Chicago for
over two years really proved it to me. They got the type of geek they were
looking for and the US exchange rate made it cheaper for them and meant a
better salary for me.

I actually miss working under those conditions. Less distractions and no
office politics...

one thing I've been trying to champion is to embrace more telecommuters and
take an aggressive stance on it where they go after people not wanting to
relocate. I think when companies finaly come to grips with letting people
work from home, and learn how to filter out bad eggs (people who get lazy at
home), they'll probably have one of the strongest flash dev teams around.

with Breeze, and other solutions, you can very easily interact with
coworkers. I've been doing it for 2+yrs now and I've been 100x's more
productive without all the distractions etc.

Somebody ( an agency ) will do it and I think it'll be very succesfull. Who
that'll be is still to be seen ;)

Even if I cut and paste the same gradient from a FLA that does not give me

Any ideas??

It might be similar in that here the main view is New Zealand, and
you can click a button to see one particular region. It's still got a

Arguments aside whether using components is a good idea in the first place
:-) I wanted to ask if there are XP Components users in Flashcoders? I'm
trying to figure out how they're used from within Actionscript only, and am
having trouble in lack of examples. The documentation of XP Components is
pretty, uh, light and while it may be sufficient for someone very familiar
with component use, for someone who's not extremely familiar with them, some
examples would have come handy.

If someone here uses them, and happens to have handy a piece of code where
XPC interface components are instantiated from code, preferably without use
of forms (is that possible in the first place - they seem to heavily
advocate use of forms based design), it would be really helpful to see an
example.

Thanks!

[Flashcoders] Aliased Dynamic Text in 2004

2006-06-08 Thread Kevin Aebig
Hi all,

Maybe it's just one of those days, but I can't seem to get dynamic text to
show aliased. I've included the font, than tried embedding the font outlines
as well as toggling on the "Alias Text" button in the properties panel to no
avail.

In fact, when I try to include font outlines, nothing shows up.

Can anyone club me on the head with the solution?

RE: [Flashcoders] How do real developers do key handling?

2006-06-06 Thread Kevin Aebig
Well the code that your friend is suggesting is pretty straightforward and
you could port it over to AS2 if you wanted. Instead of a hashMap, why not
just use an associative array? I'm pretty sure that I've seen a hash class
ripping around from either Brandan Hall or Samuel Wan based off of an
associative array.

All in all, the code could be ported over with minimal effort... but there
would be some area's that you would need to be creative with.

Cheers,

Kevin

I have 10 apps that will controlled with a TV remote control (no mouse).
There are only 12 keys on the remote, so the app that has focus will will
have to do very different things with a given key press, depending on
context.

A java dev. friend suggested an approach using a hashMap, but we don't have
hashMap in AS 2.0. And I'm a bit confused by his sample code:

public class ChannelInputTest {
  public static void main(String argv[]) {

// Create a new ChannelInput object and add a few keys to its map
ChannelInput ci1 = new ChannelInput();
ci1.addKey("1", new SimpleKeyHandler());
ci1.addKey("2", new AnotherSimpleKeyHandler());

// Now handle some keys with this puppy
ci1.processKey("1");
ci1.processKey("2");

// Create a SECOND ChannelInput object, and add some different
keys/handlers
ChannelInput ci2 = new ChannelInput();
ci2.addKey("3", new AnotherSimpleKeyHandler());
ci2.addKey("4", new SimpleKeyHandler());

ci2.processKey("3");
ci2.processKey("4");

// Finally - should get an error if a ChannelInput gets unmapped key
ci2.processKey("1");
  }
}

import java.util.HashMap;

public class ChannelInput {
  private HashMap handlerMap = null;

  ChannelInput() {
handlerMap = new HashMap();
  }

  public void addKey(String key, KeyHandler handler) {
handlerMap.put(key, handler);
  }

  public void processKey(String key) {
KeyHandler handler = (KeyHandler) handlerMap.get(key);

if (handler == null) {
  System.out.println("ERROR: null handler for key \"" + key + "\"");
} else {
  handler.handleKey(key);
}
  }

public class SimpleKeyHandler implements KeyHandler {
  public void handleKey(String key) {
System.out.println("SimpleKeyHandler Key " + key + " was pressed");
// Action for this key goes here
  }
}

interface KeyHandler {
  public void handleKey(String key);
}

Tom,

Hey, it's Mustard Lab--that's us. I actually work with Sean Christmann,
the author of the page that you referred to, and would refer you to him,
but he's out until Monday so I'll take a stab at elaborating on this.

The very short answer to your question is that that the data: URI scheme
(RFC 2397) is not supported by Internet Explorer. It does, however,
work with most other browsers on the market, including Firefox, Opera
and Safari. As such, it is not helpful in terms of working around the
recent change in IE to bring it into compliance with the Eolas patent.

To answer your second question, yes it is possible to use this technique
to encode a SWF file within a containing HTML page. A while back, I
actually managed to write out a second SWF to a HTML page from another
SWF with a bit of Javascript. You can see a working example with source
code here:  http://dev.psalterego.com/datauri/.

Originally, I was experimenting with using the data URI scheme as a
possible means to obfuscate SWFs encoded within an outer wrapper SWF to
make it slightly more difficult for relatively unskilled "script
kiddies" to quickly recover and decompile the bytecodes for the inner
SWF via a simple attack with a decompiler. However, as such a scheme
would result in the inner "protected" SWF being completely inaccessible
to Internet Explorer users, I never pursued this idea further.

Keep in mind that this technique is not particularly efficient in terms
of file size, particularly if the base 64 encoded data is stored in
HTML. There are also limitations on the maximum possible length of a
URL supported by each browser that effectively limit the size of the
data that you can include via a data URI scheme.

Jim

[Flashcoders] Flash ActiveX Wrapper

2006-06-02 Thread Kevin Aebig
Hey all,

I've got a project that involves an application that contains a browser
control in it (IE) and has specific ActiveX access to allow local file
system access in a secure way. I'm looking to use Flash as my front-end, but
still have access to the file system.

Is there any tools / examples / tutorials / advice anyone can provide in how
to wrap the Flash ActiveX with more functionality as a new ActiveX? I'd
prefer to not to use 2 and deal with inter-process communication.

Thanks,

RE: [Flashcoders] WSE securing Web services

I took a crack at it, but it wasn't a good implementation. We ended up just
using HTTPS based calls instead and using webservice authentication. If you
find anything, please let me know.

Anybody have any success structuring WebServices to support WSE?

Maybe the algorithm that creates the token and injecting it into the

Does anyone know if Flash supports pressure sensitive feedback from
Wacom tablets? This would allow for really smooth drawing tools to
be made that better represent the artists intentions.

Hello,

I am currently working on a school project, whereby we use a keyboard as
the main input. Now we use the keys of the keyboard as buttons. Currently,
I am staring blind on a problem with this input device, I really hope
someone of you guys can share some great ideas.

The thing is that the buttons are used as sensors, meaning that we use the
buttons to detect if some block is available (i.e. item isn't removed from
his stationary) now we want to be able to reorder this four block
elements. Only I am not sure how I can detect if the order, is a expected.
Because of the continous key events.

Does anyone happen to have a solution, it would be greatly apperciated.
Probably really simple to solve... Probably to tired :(

Subject: [Flashcoders] tabIndex problems

Hey there,
I have been having some problems using the tabIndex feature with Flash 8
Pro. You can view the file here: http://132.162.36.103/albert/MUTH/ The
problem is that, though I am confident that I have properly indexed all of
the objects, the tabbing does not follow the index I provided. For instance,
on the first page of the actual exam (this is a placement exam for a Music
Theory course) the first question follows the index properly. The second
question, however, insists on going across rather than down first. The
similar problems occur on question 4 where the second part of the answer is
selected, then the first. All of the objects that I have placed in the index
are editable objects, and they all seem to get selected, just not according
to the index I layed out. The only oddity is the "Submit" button which is a
single object which exists across all of the frames. I dealt with this by
just giving it the highest index on any frame in the hope that it would just
work. I didn't see anything in the documentation which would suggest that
this won't work, though I'm not really holding my breath. All other objects
are in their frame alone and do not last across frames (or layers for that
matter). Any suggestions would be appreciated... I'm wondering if there is
some global setting I don't have on to use the tabIndex?? Didn't see
anything in the documentation suggesting that, but thought it was possible.

RE: [Flashcoders] percent loaded?

2006-03-16 Thread Kevin Aebig
There used to be an old problem that might be the cause of your troubles.
When a movie starts, sometimes the getBytesLoaded returns a value before
getBytesTotal has finished. So your condition of bLoaded < tBytes is
rendered inadequate. You could add "&& tBytes > 8" to make sure that
totalBytes has actually loaded something...

Subject: RE: [Flashcoders] Flex2 Project Conversion

Hi,

I am from Adobe, let me give some perspective.

A) It is always risky to build on a beta. I feel quite confident in
where we are and hitting our schedule, but I have to be realistic that
there is always some risk. You need to judge your tolerence for risk.

B) There has been an API scrub between beta 1 and beta 2. The results
are I think great--clarity and consistancy--but it will mean some
migration from Beta 1 to beta 2. Most beta 1 apps will require some
changes to run in beta 2. That said, we don't expect to need to do this
again. Beta 3 and final could require some changes in your code, but if
they do, it should be minor. Again, we can't make guarantees and you
might have to make changes again before we ship.

C) The advantages of Flex 2 are (IMO) enourmous and very valuable
(performance, productivity, maintainability). We aren't going to be
reachitecting the Player, framework, language, again for a long long
time. If you can go straight to Flex 2/Player 8.5 that will save you
the effort at some point of migrating, but it does carry risk until we
ship.

I know this isn't a absolute answer, but I hope it helps,

David

RE: [Flashcoders] Loading several images with one progressbar?

2006-03-14 Thread Kevin Aebig
Instead of showing the progression of how many bytes loaded, you should just
show how many images are loaded.

So if you have 13 images loading, each time a image is loaded, increment the
progress bar 7.69 percent:

var nPercent:Number = (numberOfImagesLoaded / totalNumberOfImages)*100;

Hi Adrian,

thanks for the idea but this approach will not work in my case because the
images are loaded sequencially. If one image is finished loading, my class
starts loading the next and so on, one after one. And the amount of images
varies (the image filenames are fetched from a XML file).
I'm now defining a segmentWidth by dividing the full progressbar width by
the amount of images that are going to be loaded. That gives me the 100% for

one image on the whol bar. I just haven't figured out yet how to make it
work so that the bar doesn't start from 0 at every image. Any other idea?

Sascha

Say you have 3 images loading, use something like this:

var bytesLoaded:Number = 0;
var bytesTotal:Number = 0;

bytesLoaded += image1.getBytesLoaded();
bytesTotal += image1.getBytesTotal();
bytesLoaded += image2.getBytesLoaded();
bytesTotal += image2.getBytesTotal();
bytesLoaded += image3.getBytesLoaded();
bytesTotal += image3.getBytesTotal();

var percentageLoaded:Number = (bytesLoaded/bytesTotal) * 100;

There may be ways to optimise this code depending on your circumstances
(e.g.
just calculate bytesTotal once and reuse it) but this shows the basic idea.

[Flashcoders] Flex2 Project Conversion

2006-03-14 Thread Kevin Aebig
Hey all,

The company I work for is interested in moving one of our large applications
over to Flex when the new version comes out. Is it worthwhile or even
feasible to begin porting it over with the Beta release or are we wasting
our time considering that quite a bit of it could change beforehand.

I'd hate to put in a lot of time into this only to find out that my source
files are rendered obsolete when the new version is finally released.

Thanks for your input,

RE: [Flashcoders] Math, Maps and problems...

2006-03-10 Thread Kevin Aebig
It's all about conversion of units. If the map represents from the left to
right 7.65 to 9.34 and the width of the map is 200, than each pixel is
0.00845 units. Of course with Flash's poor floating point math, you might
want to convert it to whole numbers before you perform your calculations.

Subject: [Flashcoders] Math, Maps and problems...

Hi,
I have to make an app that, given a bitmap of a Map (a photo of a city),
and given the georeferences of the upper-left corner and lower-right
corner of that photo, take any group of latitudes/longitudes and draw on
the map that coordinates.

I´ve tried using the Mercator projection formula, but for some reason it
doesn´t work. Probably because i need to "interpolate" the whole world
size from the given map.

Ideas? Formulas?

Thanks in advance!,

Hello everybody,

Here's a non-technical question: what is your job title?

For a long time I've been telling people "Flash Developer", although
that shortchanges the consultation and on-the-fly design I do.
Also, people outside the industry have no freaking idea what it means.

Typically, if I'm not the designer, I work to help make the design more
feasible for Flash.
When it comes time to build I'm often making up the behaviors and
adding special touches here and there.

Anyone have any suggestions for a title that encompasses these ideas?

thanks,
Kirk

+=e.d=+ you bugger...

Ok.. for some odd reason, that works.

This doesn't:
newClip.intervalid = setInterval( newClip, "doSomething", 1000 );

But this does:
var intID =setInterval( newClip, "doSomething", 1000 );

Really friggin' weird. Thanks for all the suggestions guys...

RE: [Flashcoders] setInterval inside created Clip

2006-02-24 Thread Kevin Aebig
I'm finishing off a XML to diagram component. It uses recursion and
unfortunately, I can't post anymore than I already have. I tried keeping
references, but in the end that would be worse than using onEnterFrame so I
axed that idea pretty quick.

Give me more of the code, what exactly are you trying to do? Can you
keep all of the crated mc's in an array & have a function that loops
through them & changes what you need?

Nope... still won't go.

I actually decided to do a little test and when I set the function to be
onEnterFrame instead of doSomething, it performs well. The only problem
is
that I'm unsure how many clips could be running at the same time and I
don't
want a performance hit...

[Flashcoders] setInterval inside created Clip

2006-02-24 Thread Kevin Aebig
Hey All,

I'm looping through a structure adding movieclips along the way for each
element. I need to setup a separate interval inside each new clip. If I call
the function directly, I need this to be constantly updating without an
onEnterFrame.

_root.work.createEmptyMovieClip( newName, vItemCount );

//

var newClip = _root.work[newName];

//

// this function redraws the line

newClip.doSomething = function()

{

// {.}

}

// I've tried all of the following

// newClip.intervalid = setInterval(this, doSomething, 200);

// newClip.intervalid = newClip.setInterval(doSomething, 200);

// newClip.intervalid = setInterval(newClip, doSomething, 200);

Any insight or help is appreciated.

Cheers,

hi Kevin,

  Try poking around  http://www.2GoTo.com

  It's an experimental data visualization system based on an infinitely
large, non-distorting hyperbolic plane that imports .swf files as content.

  It zooms from 2% to 28000% and can display hundreds of different .swf
files at the same time, from many different servers at the same time.

and MVP patterns before in other projects.

I also have a very good understanding of the inner workings of the Tree
component, but am looking for something more "experimental". The yugop tree
is a good example of something I'd be interested in seeing. I already have
this "bounce" style tree menu's source from a different party, but it seems
bulky and the implementation isn't clean enough.

Basically I'm trying to re-think how data can be viewed intelligently, but
artistically. I assume I'm not the first... =]

Cheers and thanks for suggesting the ARP framework. I'd heard about it, but
maybe it's time I play around for a bit...

I see what you mean, but it seems like the the examples you've given utilize
a Model View Controller ( commonly referred to as MVC ) design pattern. This
pattern is designed for different views of the same data model, however, it
can be used in many different applications. The MVC pattern is built on
other other design patterns, I would suggest learning these first.

I would also recommend checking out the ARP
Framework<http://osflash.org/arp>,
which is a framework designed to streamline and facilitate pattern
implementation.

As for your request for an example that renders XML type data, the version
2.0 Tree component that comes in Flash MX Professional 2004 ( and later
versions ) would suit well. This type of view best represents heirarchical
data models in my opinion. The source code can be viewed where Flash is
installed, relatively: en\First Run\Classes\mx\controls\Tree.as

I hope this helps,

M.

- Loader component works in Flash 8 IDE.
- Loader component works loading Flash 8 SWF in Flash 7 Player.
- Loader component works in Flash 8 projector (EXE).
- Loader component does not work in Flash 8.

If you've ever run a Loader component in Flash 6 or 5, it'll do the same
thing; it'll show the black box with green outline; this basically means
the

component doesn't work in the version of Flash you are playing in.

What I don't get is why the hell is it doing this in 8? I thought it was
local file security, but choosing both, remote and local, as well as for
the

SWF it's loading, does squat.

LoadMovie works just fine. Anyone know what the heck is wrong with the
Loader component when used in a Flash 8 SWF running in the Flash
Player.exe?

Well I think there's a lot of guys here who started using Flash before it
was really that complicated. I personally started with Flash 3 and just kept
learning new techniques as the versions progressed...

My suggestion to anyone is to learn the basics, than patiently progress up.
I think a lot of new folks believe if they jump into more advanced
Actionscript that they can learn it through sheer willpower and
unfortunately they end up quitting before they even get started.

It also helps that there are a lot of resources available to help you along
the way too...

Hi All. I'm an advanced beginner, i know the basics, how the application

Did you use a book(s) or just a lot of tutorials and experimenting? (What

Another big question is when to use actionscript and when not to? Are sites
like: www.ricksdesign.com
www.notrics.nl

www.clusta.comheavily based on actionscript?
I'm still so confused how to achieve certain
effects etc and apply them in a site. My goal is to create these kind of
sites, hopefully in the future as a job.

Can anyone give advice?

Admittingly, something needs to be done. Hopefully either Blaze (Flash 9)
can be made to have integration extensions with FlexBuilder2, made to be
basically a glorified library asset manager, or somethihng.

The current alternatives really suck. A Singleton classe that holds all
linkageID's, an images folder that contains both production graphics and
source graphics... while I love having all of this open and accessible
instead of buried deep in a binary FLA, at least Flash was damn good at
managing it.

That's the reason I was soothsaying about FlexBuilder 2 becoming the defacto
development environment and the Flash IDE evolving into a tool for design.
Eclipse will "eclipse" the Flash IDE (rim shot).

I wonder if one could be written to manage the Library. Then I'd never have
to open the Flash IDE.

I'm sorry I'm not addressing your question, but I have one of my
own. On the t8design web site there is an article entitled "Flash
Player 7" dated 5.12.05 that says:

For years Macromedia's Flash has been the only other industry
standard in website development next to HTML. With over 98% of
the world's computers having the Flash 4 player and below, many of
our clients ask why we require that users have the Flash 7 player to
view our websites.

98% have the Flash player 4 and below? Does this not contradict
Macromedia's claims a bit? Is it true?

announcements about Flex and Flash Player 8.5 and the ensuing reactions.

The valid assertion that "Flex is a tool for building RIAs (Rich Internet
Applications)" is gradually becoming widely interpreted as "If you want to
do 'rich' (fantastic, impressive or professional?) things with Flash you
need to buy Flex." Many of the people who have been fortunate enough to be
able to play with Flex since it was released are now self-declared RIA
experts, most of whom are extremely pleasant, incredibly easy to reach and
deal with others with the utmost humility and modesty. (I am really going to

miss our Iteration 2 friends in this respect...)

We could begin by debating the concept of RIA and the fact that it is the
new Grail of the present-day Internet. By no means am I sufficiently
familiar with the subtleties of the English language to fully understand the

nuances of the adjective 'rich'. By 'rich' I understand 'souped up',
'brimming over' (with functions and information), 'complex' in terms of
interactions, and I would imagine that it quite expensive, etc.

Personally, I prefer 'sexy', 'shrewd', 'fluid', 'educational' or
'intelligent' to 'rich'.

Actually, most Flex applications have this characteristic compartmentalized
appearance, like a 1970s living room bookcase, with cabinets, drawers,
framed photographs, multitudes of lists and datagrids which provide a
talking point. On the subject of sobriety, are you familiar with Google
Maps?

I started using Flash quite a long time (almost eight years) ago because it
was fast, powerful, visually appealing and there was no need to buy server
software for 15,000 dollars to produce dynamic maps. All you had to do was
connect to a good old database. At the time it performed miracles. These
days we have to fight through a myriad of increasingly large and unwieldy
component libraries. I have never been able to start using V2 components
because my Internet clients do not want any files larger than 100 KB for a
public-access website.

When Flash MX2004 was released in its basic and professional versions, I
immediately bought the professional version because I really wanted to feel
like a true professional. When someone pointed out that a really serious
Flash development was being made in OOP and integrally in external classes,
without putting any objects or drawings at all on the scene, I gritted my
teeth and continued regardless. I fiddled around a bit: mycb._y=8? too
high. mycb._y=15: oops, too low! I used the Event Dispatcher function like
there was no tomorrow and put Delegate.create everywhere in my code. It
looked fantastic and I felt really free!

Of course, I bought Flash 8 Pro, which I use mainly as a compiler and
debugger. I have now learned that using Flash 8 IDE for compiling purposes
is rather old-fashioned. I was told I should use MTASC and, of course, Flex
builder. I will soon be able to throw my Flash 8 Pro away. Do I need Flash
9?

Lastly, the story of the Flash Player 8.5 has completely worn me out. You
fight for major tenders, explaining that Flash is now a mature, stable
product that works with all browsers and operating systems, and that we are
waiting until the latest version has spread everywhere before switching to
the new one. And one month after Flash 8 is released, there are more and
more announcements and no one understands anything any more. Yesterday, a
smart aleck computer specialist who is always abreast of new developments
said to me "So, that's it. If we take your Macromedia Flash, will we need to

buy the Flex for 15,000 dollars in a year's time?"

- The first demo that I assemble for a client using Flash 8 makes all his
browsers crash, although I had vigorously assured him that Flash never
crashes. I had made the mistake of trying to impress him with contextual
menus.
- I was not immediately aware that Windows NT4 and a few other environments
were not supported.
- I shouted it from the rooftops that the Flash/JavaScript communication was

now reinforced; yet unfortunately it only works with really up-to-date
browsers. I congratulate Mike Chambers and Christian Cantrell for their kit.

It is a great initiative but what is the status of this investment with
Macromedia? What is Macromedia's obligation to truly consolidate this Flash
integration in the browser, also for Flash 7 and IE 5.5, etc.?
- It is a good idea to have bitmap functions, but Flash's original
contribution is vectors and there is still not the slightest function for
editing a shape after Actionscript has been used. If you wan

I think you'll be uinlikely to find such a thing, largely due to the
fact that those sort of calculations are a) imprecise in client-side
languages, and b) usually involve information that requires security. Due to

both of those, these sort of calculations are much more likely to be done on

the server side. I'll bet you can find libraries of those kinds of
calculation in ASP/VBScript, VB/C#.NET, C++, Java, and all kinds of other
languages that are more precise and more common in application development.
Converting an existing class from Java or C# wouldn't be difficult, but it
would require some tweaking to maintain precision (mostly multiplying
numbers by 1000 before doing arithmatic on them and then dividing again
before returning results, to avoid imprecise floating point calculations).

Re: [Flashcoders] I.E. Security Alert When Playing Flash Locally

2005-10-08 Thread Kevin Aebig
This is because of IE's internal security saying "You're running an activeX
plugin locally, which could be dangerous, watch out!"... It'll scream the
same thing with any other plugins, if run locally.

Subject: [Flashcoders] I.E. Security Alert When Playing Flash Locally

This alert pops up when I use I.E. to locally play the html and .swf that
Flash publishes:

"! Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on
this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly. OK"

If I put this on a web server, it plays fine. It also works locally in
Netscape 4.71.

Is this a result of security restrictions in Flash 8? If so, how do I
override them?

thanks,

Marc
