RE: [flexcoders] [FLEX1.5] flex + fcs + cfc + oracle realtime question

There is a Java SDK in FlashComm 2, I think you could
use it in coldfusion to update FlashCom Shared Objects that
would synchronize with your Flex app.

[flexcoders] flex 2 [feature request]: Image complete event - need init event

2005-11-08 Thread Muzak

When loading a swf in an Image (or Loader) control and using the "complete"
event handler, the properties (width, height, etc..) of
the loaded swf are not yet available.
This seems to be the same problem as with the "MovieClipLoader" class in Flash,
where when the "onLoadComplete" event is triggered,
properties (width, height) of the loaded content are not yet available.
With the MovieClipLoader in Flash one can use the "onLoadInit" event instead of
the "onLoadComplete" event.
This does not seem to be the case for the Image control in Flex.
However, the flash.display.Loader class (which is the new MovieClipLoader
class) does have an init event.

So it would be nice to have an init event for the Image control so we don't
have to jump through hoops when we need to retrieve
width, height, etc.. of loaded content.

In fact, (IMO) dump the complete event and replace with init ;-)

Muzak

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Problem with type casting a TreedataProvider back to array...

2005-11-08 Thread Matt Chotin

You need to make sure that the dataProvider
you assign to the Tree is single Object, not an array.  So where you have treeDetails
that should not be an Array but perhaps just the object.  I would then also wait
to assign the Tree.dataProvider until the result has come back.  That way you
can set up the whole structure, assign the dataProvider, and the nodes should
be constructed correctly.

Good luck!

install correctly, go to http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_15507

I spent
the weekend re-installing my system for a RAID0 setup (blazing).

Now that
I'm back up, I've noticed that none of the Flex2 Alpha 1 Welcome Screen setups
work.

My builds
work from the IDE but I was just wondering what the guidelines are for deploying
the samples on IIS6 local server.

Forgive
me if this is trivial; maybe I'm just too tired from 3 days of setting back up,
but I'm missing something -- it installs the Flash 8 Player (says it's 8 but
I'm sure it's 8.5; returns 0 for version) but every example is a blank screen
(well blank for the flash movie anyway).

I'd also
like to know, if anyone can just shout it out to me, what is recommended for
POJO's until Flex2 Enterprise Server is out -- JRun?  Guess I'm headed to
the eval page for that.

I love
Flex2; and I love Macromedia!

I have a page that displays a

there a way to draw
lines from one to another in Flex
1.5?

I tried abusing HRule and VRule, but that didn't
work...

Internet searches revealed some drawLines methods:

function drawLines(lines,x1, y1, x2, y2, size,
sharpness) {
lines.lineStyle(2,0x00,100);
lines.moveTo(x1,y1);
lines.lineTo(x2, y2);
}

But nothing more descriptive than that...

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Image.percentLoaded always returns '0' for remote images

Some more information on this issue and
possibly a bug or undocumented restriction in the Flash player…

Investigating this further, I have traced
the source of my problem to inaccurate reporting of Image.percentLoaded. It appears
that images loaded from a remote server always report ‘0’ for
percentLoaded. The following example illustrates this issue:

    var localPath =
"http://localhost:8080/images/sample.jpg";

    var remotePath =
"http://192.168.1.115:8080/images/sample.jpg";

    function
handleComplete(event)

    {

trace("loading complete: (" + event.target.percentLoaded + "%)
" + event.target.source);

    }

complete="handleComplete(event)"/>

complete="handleComplete(event)"/>

In the above example, localhost and
192.168.1.115 are my local machine. My debug log traces:

loading complete: (100%)
http://localhost:8080/images/sample.jpg

loading complete: (0%)
http://192.168.1.115:8080/images/sample.jpg

It appears that you can not rely on
Image.percentLoaded in your Flex app if you are loading external images. Is
this a known issue? Google didn’t turn up anything obvious.

Has anyone learned any more about this
issue or come up with a solution?

I am experiencing a very similar problem:
images loaded from another domain are generating Security Sandbox Violations of
the form:

*** Security Sandbox Violation ***

SecurityDomain 'http://host1/foo' tried to
access incompatible context
'http://host2/bar/thumbnail?width=40&height=52&id=pap'

It does not appear to be the mere loading
of these images that causes this warning. It is applying effects and accessing
properties. This is true even if I wrap the Image in another component like a Canvas
that I then act on.

Usually, the behavior of the app does not
work when this error is produced but sporadically, in the same application
instance with the same images, the behavior does work while still generating
these errors.

Very puzzling.

Subject: [flexcoders] Security
Sandbox Violation when loading image

I'm trying to load some images from a different domain than
the one my Flex app lives on. When I do, the debugger prints out a bunch of
errors like this:

*** Security Sandbox Violation ***

SecurityDomain 'http://myserver.com/index.mxml?debug=true'
tried to access incompatible context 'http://otherserver.com/someImage?wid=30'

(Note, the image is dynamically generated and the URL
should not include ".jpg")

Despite the errors, my images still seem to load in
successfully, both through the Flex Builder IDE and when viewed directly in IE.
Or so I thought.

The weird thing I've discovered is that if my image paths
are brought into my Flex app via an XML file, then I do get the errors above,
but the images do load successfully. However, if my image paths come in as a
result of a remote object call, I get the same errors and my images DON'T load
successfully. I've double checked the exact path's that are being used in both
situations by tracing out the path immediately before it is used as the value
for the "source" property of the tag and it is
EXACTLY the same in both cases.

So I have questions. First, why do I get those error
messages? Secondly, if there really is a security sandbox violation, why do the
images load successfully under the conditions I mentioned above? And finally,
how do I prevent these violations from occurring in the first place?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

RE: [flexcoders] Dyanamic MXML Loading

2005-11-08 Thread Matt Chotin

That seems pretty odd.  Are you sure that
nothing is getting escaped accidentally, like the <> turning into
< > deeper in?

Subject: [flexcoders] Dyanamic
MXML Loading

Hi,

I have a requirement to dynamically load mxml at
runtime.

We use a custom tool to generate MXML code for
various screens. The
MXML sources thus generated are stored as an XML
Objects
in the database associated with a screen ID.

For. eg.

Screen Code | MXML source stored as XML object
---
  S001 | (XML Object)
MXML source code for Screen 1
  S002 | (XML Object)
MXML source code for Screen 2

The screens will be accessed calling a common
servlet and passing
the screen ID to it.

The servlet is responsible
for
a) fetching the XML object corresponding to the
screen id from the
database
b) dispatching the request to a JSP with the XML
String thus fetched.

The called JSP should render the XML String using
Flex Tag Libs as
shown below,

  <%@ taglib
uri="FlexTagLib" prefix="mm" %>
  <%

String mxmlString=request.getParameter
("mxml"); // "mxml" is the
name of the attribute that holds the XML
String
  %>

  <%=mxmlString%>

The problem we are facing is that the MXML does
not get rendered
properly. Supposing the MXML source is as shown
below,

http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml'>

The MXML embedded in the JSP only displays the
direct children of
the Application. In the above examples, the Panel1
and TextInput3
are displayed while TextInput2 and DataGrid3 are
node displayed.
(Please note that the mxmlString contains the
source code correctly).

It will a great help if you can give any
suggestion/solution to this
problem. Please let me know if there is any
alternate way to
dynamically display mxml.

RE: [flexcoders] remote object without mx:RemoteObject, is it possible?

2005-11-08 Thread Matt Chotin

It’s not very easy to do right now
in 1.5 because of the amount of code-generation that goes into RemoteObject.
But 2.0 allows everything to be created in ActionScript which will make this
easier.

Subject: [flexcoders] remote
object without mx:RemoteObject, is it possible?

Hi guys
I'm quite new to Flex and have a qusetion.
Is it possible to perform server call without
declaring RemoteObject
in MXML. The reason why I need it is following:
I'm trying to fix some things that I do not like
in cairnrogm
framework. One of them is that all remote objects
must be declared in
single place.
We have a tens of applications that share the same
services and I do
not want to create the single Service.mxml for
them also I do not like
to create tens of them and duplicate services
declarations.
Another thing I do not like is code duplications

  id="memberManagerService"

  source="memberManager"

  result="event.call.resultHandler(event)"

fault="event.call.faultHandler(event)">

id="authenticationManagerService"

source="authenticationManager"

result="event.call.resultHandler(event)"

fault="event.call.faultHandler(event)">

result and fault attributes are the same. I think
this can be fixed if
i could initialize RemoteObject from ActionScript
programmatically.

I was trying to find the solution in docs but they
sucks. They declare
mx.servicetags.RemoteObject as tag and since the
source of that tag is
not availiable I do not know how to initialize it
programmatically.
Can anyone help?
Thanx in advance
Mykola

[flexcoders] AsUnit XULUI alpha released!

2005-11-08 Thread Luke Bayes

As it turns out, I got a spare 1/2 hour this evening which was combined
with a miraculously simple fix for a problem that I thought would take
hours... With that - we're ready to announce the public alpha for the
AsUnit XUL UI!

This is a completely tool-agnostic desktop application built on top of
the Mozilla XUL platform. The primary purpose of this tool set is to
make it much easier to automatically create a wide variety of class
types, TestCases, and automatically manage Test Suites for both
ActionScript 2.0 AND ActionScript 3.0 applications!.

This tool is a much more robust replacement for what used to be our
.mxp-based Flash IDE extension. It works beautifully alongside any and
all ActionScript development tools including, Sepy, X-Code, Textpad,
ASDT, FDT, Flex Builder 2.0 alpha, Flex Builder 1.0/1.5, Flash MX 2004,
Flash 8 and MTASC!

You can download the build here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=108947&package_id=168969

If you run into any issues or have any questions, please subscribe to our mailing list at:

Hey Robert,

Thanks for the kind words! We don't actually have a beta "program" per
se - this is open source software! We are running a couple of
alpha/betas right now trying to get confirmation from the community on
our next major release.

You can alway go to www.asunit.org to get our latest releases and
please subscribe to the Asunit-users mailing list if you have questions
or run into issues. There are quite a few people there that are usually
happy to help out.

Thanks,

[flexcoders] Samples from Welcome Page

2005-11-08 Thread Robert Thompson

I spent the weekend re-installing my system for a RAID0 setup (blazing).

Now that I'm back up, I've noticed that none of the Flex2 Alpha 1 Welcome Screen setups work.

My builds work from the IDE but I was just wondering what the guidelines are for deploying the samples on IIS6 local server.

Forgive me if this is trivial; maybe I'm just too tired from 3 days of setting back up, but I'm missing something -- it installs the Flash 8 Player (says it's 8 but I'm sure it's 8.5; returns 0 for version) but every example is a blank screen (well blank for the flash movie anyway).

I'd also like to know, if anyone can just shout it out to me, what is recommended for POJO's until Flex2 Enterprise Server is out -- JRun?  Guess I'm headed to the eval page for that.

I love Flex2; and I love Macromedia!

[flexcoders] how do you change the x-axis at runtime?

2005-11-08 Thread Jonathan Hirschi

Hey guys,

I'm trying to change the x-axis of a line chart at
runtime and I was wondering if anybody out there has
any information on how you would go about doing it. So
what I'm doing is that I have a pop up window that
shows a graph. The numbers are pretty much the same
across all of the graphs, but in one, the dataset over
a much smaller data sample. So for example most
graphs numbers range from 0-100 but on one, the
numbers are between 99.90 and 100. I'd like to change
the min and maximum on the vertical axis at run time
depending on what chart was selected. does anyone know
of an easy way to do this?

thanks!

my code below

// the following code doesn't work...

if (String(trendType) == "ACHIEVE")  {
mychart.verticalAxis.LinearAxis.minimum = 99.90;
mychart.verticalAxis.LinearAxis.maximum = 100;
mychart.verticalAxis.LinearAxis.baseAtZero = false;
} else {
mychart.verticalAxis.LinearAxis.baseAtZero = true;
}   }

// below is the line chart...

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Repeater endIndex ?

2005-11-08 Thread Tracy Spratt
In the repeater tag, set count="4". This will cause only the first 4
items to be displayed.

This is a goods technique for large datasets, for you would then allow
for page-up and page down navigation. It is much more performant than
rendering say 100 items.

we did this recently.  Didn't like the setProperties() approach

Fwd: [flexcoders] AsUnit 3.0 alpha released!

2005-11-08 Thread Luke Bayes

Hey Robert,

Here's a great article on Test-Driven Development:
http://junit.sourceforge.net/doc/testinfected/testing.htm

Essentially, AsUnit 3.x is built directly from the JUnit source code.
It is a pure ActionScript framework that allows you to construct test
fixtures for your applications. It lets you build each encapsulated
element of an application, test it, gaurantee it's functionality and
then through continuous integration, grow your application over time
with confidence. If at any point, you break some long-forgotten entity,
your test fixture will notify you immediately with exactly what is
broken and why it broke. If you later expose issues (bugs) that went
originally untested, you can develop a new test that exposes the
behavior, then fix it and be assured that it won't be reintroduced.

This is an alternative approach to what's known as "Waterfall"
development, and without a clean unit test framework, it's very
difficult to implement...

Thanks for asking!

Re: [flexcoders] AsUnit 3.0 alpha released!

This should probably be added the to FAQ as it gets asked a lot:

// Use "setPropertiesAt" to set the background color of an individual row:
theListOrGrid.setPropertiesAt( rowIndex, { backgroundColor: 0xFF } );

[flexcoders] [Flex 1.5] Drawing Lines

2005-11-08 Thread fowleryj
I have a page that displays a genealogy tree, with an
component representing each node of the tree. Is there a way to draw
lines from one to another in Flex 1.5?

I tried abusing HRule and VRule, but that didn't work...

Internet searches revealed some drawLines methods:

function drawLines(lines,x1, y1, x2, y2, size, sharpness) {
lines.lineStyle(2,0x00,100);
lines.moveTo(x1,y1);
lines.lineTo(x2, y2);
}

But nothing more descriptive than that...

Any ideas would be appreciated.

[flexcoders] Changing the background color of row in datagrid

2005-11-08 Thread Parekh, Shweta - BLS CTR
Title: Changing the background color of row in datagrid

Hi,

I would like to be able to change the background color of a row in the datagrid after I click on a row and then enter the letter : n in the input box called print_txt and hit enter.  I use the setPropertiesAt method, employee_dg.setPropertiesAt(rowInd, {backgroundColor:0xFFF00}); the row changes its color ONLY after I click on another row or anywhere in the datagrid.  However, I don't need to click on another row for it to work if I have the row index as a number i.e. if my code looks like this: employee_dg.setPropertiesAt(1, {backgroundColor:0xFFF00}); where I hard code the row index instead of passing a parameter.  Why is this?  I don't have a problem with this when changing the color of a cell.

I also tried using employee_dg.rows[rowInd].backgroundColor = "0xfff00"; for changing the background color for a row but this does not work.

Any ideas why?

Thank you.

Shweta

[flexcoders] HTTPService and Flex 2.0

2005-11-08 Thread Michel Bertrand
Title: HTTPService and Flex 2.0

Hello !

Have somebody used HTTPService in Flex 2.0 Alpha ?

I got the error "Access of undefined property document" for the tag below:

1

2           id="testDataSrv"

3           method="POST"

4           resultFormat="xml"

5       url="">http://localhost:8080/Teste/servlet/TestDataService"

6           useProxy="false"/>

The editor marks line 3 (method="POST") as error reason, any idea ?

Thanks in advance !

[flexcoders] Re: HTTP Post

2005-11-08 Thread Dave Wolf

You can't post to an MXML file directly because the mxml compiling
filter doesnt implement the post method.

Create a JSP page that dynamically builds the object embed tag based
on the posted parameters. Place the posted parameters as parameters
in the embed tag which the swf (yes precompile the mxml into swf) can
then read.

Re: [flexcoders] Custom components in Flex 2

Roger,

thanks for your feedback on using custom Flash components in Flex 2.
But this doesn't explain why the custom swc example didn't work in Flex
1.5 either.

Has anyone else had problems using custom swc that couldn't be "Parse"
in Flex?

I agree; wrapping my head around Repeater has been
very tough; it's so much easier to create either a cellRenderer that does what
you want in a List, or just use createChild/destroyChild with a
VBox.

A high level comment
that may help you to put your problem and solution in a different
light…

In our work with Flex I
have found using a repeater to be a “bad smell” worth looking in to. Usually,
replacing a repeater with a List and CellRenderer cleans things up immensely and
enables componentization of your solution including easier event handling and
data binding. Remember that a List is not necessarily a ComboBox or a DataGrid.
We have found that many UI programming tasks decompose well into a List and
CellRenderer.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: will we have access to makeplayerglobal script ?

2005-11-08 Thread Matt Chotin

Response from someone on the player team
includes:

* AS3 does support the ability to extend
builtin objects by adding prototype methods.  Yes, you give up something
(strong type checking) but it's no worse than in AS1 when it worked.
Actually AS1, AS2, and AS3 all support this.

* I suppose if you recompiled
playerglobal.as with new methods in it, and took pains to add those methods as
prototype methods, you could get back some of the lost compile-time
checking.  The bytecode you generated would still be compatible with prototype
methods added on the fly at runtime.

I have no idea if we’re looking at
providing the playerglobal source (maybe we are since we’re hoping to
provide the framework source) but I can’t imagine it will be a
well-documented feature as to how to adjust it and re-compile…  I’ll
forward this to PM though and they can take it under consideration.

Really I don't try to mess with anything :).

My point is only look at the core system class
from .NET and Java
compare them to AS3, there are really things
missing.

I don't particulary want to add myself such
methods as
endswith/startswith,
I would rather prefer to have them native, just
for the speed.

And I'm almost sure I would not be the only one
wanting suhc methods
added to the coe objects.

Anyway thanks for forwarding that request.

[flexcoders] Image.percentLoaded always returns '0' for remote images

2005-11-08 Thread Alon J Salant

Some more information on this issue and
possibly a bug or undocumented restriction in the Flash player…

Investigating this further, I have traced
the source of my problem to inaccurate reporting of Image.percentLoaded. It
appears that images loaded from a remote server always report ‘0’
for percentLoaded. The following example illustrates this issue:

    var localPath =
"http://localhost:8080/images/sample.jpg";

    var remotePath =
"http://192.168.1.115:8080/images/sample.jpg";

    function
handleComplete(event)

    {

trace("loading complete: (" + event.target.percentLoaded + "%)
" + event.target.source);

    }

complete="handleComplete(event)"/>

complete="handleComplete(event)"/>

In the above example, localhost and
192.168.1.115 are my local machine. My debug log traces:

loading complete: (100%)
http://localhost:8080/images/sample.jpg

loading complete: (0%)
http://192.168.1.115:8080/images/sample.jpg

It appears that you can not rely on
Image.percentLoaded in your Flex app if you are loading external images. Is
this a known issue? Google didn’t turn up anything obvious.

Sandbox Violation when loading image

Has anyone learned any more about this
issue or come up with a solution?

I am experiencing a very similar problem: images
loaded from another domain are generating Security Sandbox Violations of the
form:

*** Security Sandbox Violation ***

SecurityDomain 'http://host1/foo' tried to
access incompatible context
'http://host2/bar/thumbnail?width=40&height=52&id=pap'

It does not appear to be the mere loading
of these images that causes this warning. It is applying effects and accessing
properties. This is true even if I wrap the Image in another component like a
Canvas that I then act on.

Usually, the behavior of the app does not
work when this error is produced but sporadically, in the same application
instance with the same images, the behavior does work while still generating
these errors.

Very puzzling.

Subject: [flexcoders] Security
Sandbox Violation when loading image

I'm trying to load some images from a different domain
than the one my Flex app lives on. When I do, the debugger prints out a bunch
of errors like this:

RE: [flexcoders] (Sho in msg post) Flash Player - Desktop integration... SDK?

In that thread you mentioned below, I noticed it's Sho, from this list etc. that's describing Apollo.

I'm *very* interested in Apollo.

I've done variations of a Visual C++ hosted ActiveX control for different needs, including one for GM (general motors); but there was always difficulting "getting inside" and had to result to a lot of crap code to do it.

I'd be very interested in testing Apollo; I was thinking of getting Zinc but would rather go to the source; especially if Flex AS3 is better supported.

[flexcoders] Comparing two Tree nodes.

2005-11-08 Thread Oscar . Cortes
I am doing some Drag&Drop between trees and I need to validate that an
existing node does not exist more than once in a Tree branch. I am able to
loop in the branch where I am dropping the node and then compare with the
dropped node. However the statement

  if ( NodeinBranch == receiveNode)
do something

does not work. Both, NodeinBranch and receiveNode, are declared as
Objects.

How can I compare two Tree nodes to find out if they are the same? I know
that I could compare some properties of the nodes but I want to have a
generic way of doing it, without depending in specific properties names.

Thanks,

2005-11-08 Thread Tracy Spratt
This should be no problem. In my experience, assigning a dataProvider
always causes the control to refresh.
Lets see a bit of the code.

[flexcoders] Flex 2 - CF Adapter in a WAR install error

2005-11-08 Thread kaibabsowats
I have CF MX 7.0.1 installed in Tomcat (using JRE 1.4.2) using the WAR
installation. The it will server CF pages just fine. Then I start
the process of trying to install the CF Adapter from the installation
instructions here:
http://labs.macromedia.com/wiki/index.php/CF_Adapter#Installation

When I restart after making the changes in the /WEB-INF/web.xml I get
an error in the Tomcat log (see the error at the bottom of the post).

I successfully installed the CF Adapter on the standalone instance of
CF on my machine, but can't get the WAR installation to work.

Has anybody installed the CF Adapter on a WAR installation of ColdFusion?

Label's are basically "multiline = false"; at least
in 1.5, so I'd assume the same in 2.

Really I don't try to mess with anything :).

My point is only look at the core system class from .NET and Java
compare them to AS3, there are really things missing.

I don't particulary want to add myself such methods as
endswith/startswith,
I would rather prefer to have them native, just for the speed.

And I'm almost sure I would not be the only one wanting suhc methods
added to the coe objects.

Anyway thanks for forwarding that request.

Assunto: Spam:[flexcoders] Problem with Flex Samples Web services.

Hi,

I loaded the flex samples on JRUN4 on my home machine recently and
everything worked fine.

Today I followed exactly? the same procedure and loaded the Flex Samples on
a Server in my office and I get an error when executing most of the sample
applications. The error message says: Could not load WSDL: 404 Not Found.

I checked the xml files and noticed that the web services all point to
somthing like

{context.root}/services/CatalogWS?wsdl

But I can't see any directory called services which could have the CatalogWS
in it. Is this a real directory or somthing else?

Anyone idea what went wrong here?

How are web services supported for these applications are them some jrun
files missing.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex2: pricing info

2005-11-08 Thread Scott Barnes

Few points i'd like to weigh in on :)

  Its software, not a religion. I personally don't care what
Microsoft do or how they do it, its business and in truth their is no
room for product loyalty in terms of clients. If XAML prooves to be the
next wave in terms of innovative "No touch Deployment" strategy, all
the better for the world, as lets face it, the "Browser-ware" has been
ear marked for upgrade - as to be blunt, its crap and needs a major
overhaul. Products like FLEX allow one to flirt with the notion of
having a thickware client delivered over the web, and not just in a
browser either - better yet, its here, now and available and its
platform is well seeded. I'm actually going to enjoy the two worlds,
Microsoft and Adobe and to simply place Microsoft on this mantle of
"Evil" is umm, well sorry, ignorant. Let the concepts they have on the
table swirl around a while before you make rash decisions and choices
over which is the better of the two as - i see them both working in a
cohesive manner?

  AJAX is a freakin one trick poney, and all are correct in saying
that its got a dirty little secret. When people ask me to benchmark the
two, i always say this "Remove XmlHttpRequest, Remove XML, come back to
these parts late, now build your UI?" - this is were the blind
disciples suddenly have an awareness of "oh gee, yeah, the UI,
umm..Bindows.NET? or the prev mention product". I've done copious
amount of apps in DHTML and it was my "thing" back in the day, that is
until [EMAIL PROTECTED] showed me a nifty little product called Royale
back in the day - i immediately retired my DOM boots and went flash
100% as it was and still is the better choice. Nothing gets my propella
head going better then seeing an app i wrote work on all platforms
equally and with no fuss? thats gotta be worth the price no?

  Google are already mucking around with SWF compatability and
Google is one of these darling products where if there's a majority say
in how content is stored, they'll find a way to mine it. Its what they
do, index copious amounts of data to allow us the folk online to access
and scrap. You can easily setup deep linking in FLEX along with
submiting pre-built sitemaps to Google so the whole weight about
"indexing won't work with my swf" is umm, bluntly, load of crap. Its
more, about adjusting development mode(s). That being said, who the
hell wants an Application indexed in google anyway? FLEX is for Rich
Internet Applications, the fact you want to use it for a "cool website"
to me just doesn't hold water and if you do, well... its XML? write an
XLST style translation to seperate the content from swf (using DHTML
you can overlay an iframe or some slight of hand trickery to get well
seeded and what not). Seperate your content from the swf, i mean
"think" about how FLEX works and stop treating it like a web-centric
situation.

  Browsers are here to stay? or are they being used less? - lets
face it when you have situations like XBOX 360 hitting the shelves and
various other non-pc specific platforms suddenly becoming "Internet"
aware, where does one see the browser market sitting? Do you think
Macromedia folks are attacking the mobile space because its fun? Anyone
can see that if Macromedia were to dominate the mobile space in terms
of delivery channel(s) and does so that its easy to develop to? who
wouldn't want it in their next-gen hardware?

Personally, my believe is that IE7 was graciously giving an upgrade /
update soley for the purpose of getting the online folk hooked on this
darn tootin cool concept called WebFX. Once that gets some traction,
then we can revisit the "browser is dead" argument.(imagine a world
where you could load an XAML based application and then tab go to a
seperate website and load a FLEX application, or better yet, one XAML
app with FLEX swf inside it???)

  Office 12 is to be feared alongside openoffice, as you have to
sort of take a step back in many ways and see how they will play a roll
in our "future", saving as XML? woah, major leap forward in thinking is
not?

If you take a sobering step back and think more on why XAML or MXML was
"conjured" up from various inspirations and what not, its easy from my
perspective to settle on one thought - it was made to make our lives
the developers easier. Products like FLEX, AJAX, UAX, XUL, AXML etc etc
will all be ranted and raved about but it soley comes down to internal
politics within a company and which brochure a manager read on a flight
(heh i've heard that a lot of

I recently heard that PS3 had the better performance overall then XBOX
360 (personally couldn't care), yet that argument was followed up by
the fact that sure XBOX 360 may have 10 fps slower then PS3, but
Microsoft made it a concious effort to provide SDK for the bloody thing
(counter-act moding) and did their upmost best to make it easier for
developers to write stuff for it. Point?

It would be great to have a 'cellRenderer' attribute

[flexcoders] Dyanamic MXML Loading

2005-11-08 Thread varalakshmi_palani
Hi,

I have a requirement to dynamically load mxml at runtime.

We use a custom tool to generate MXML code for various screens. The
MXML sources thus generated are stored as an XML Objects
in the database associated with a screen ID.

For. eg.

 Screen Code | MXML source stored as XML object
 ---
S001 | (XML Object) MXML source code for Screen 1
S002 | (XML Object) MXML source code for Screen 2

The screens will be accessed calling a common servlet and passing
the screen ID to it.

The servlet is responsible for
a) fetching the XML object corresponding to the screen id from the
database
b) dispatching the request to a JSP with the XML String thus fetched.

The called JSP should render the XML String using Flex Tag Libs as
shown below,

<%@ taglib uri="FlexTagLib" prefix="mm" %>
<%
String mxmlString=request.getParameter
("mxml"); // "mxml" is the name of the attribute that holds the XML
String
%>

<%=mxmlString%>

The problem we are facing is that the MXML does not get rendered
properly. Supposing the MXML source is as shown below,

The MXML embedded in the JSP only displays the direct children of
the Application. In the above examples, the Panel1 and TextInput3
are displayed while TextInput2 and DataGrid3 are node displayed.
(Please note that the mxmlString contains the source code correctly).

It will a great help if you can give any suggestion/solution to this
problem. Please let me know if there is any alternate way to
dynamically display mxml.

We ususally give in - change java.sql.Timestamp to java.util.Date and
slightly change get/set methods in Java. On the bright site, timestamps have
never been intended to be used on the client anyway, so Date precision
suffice for all applications I do.

[flexcoders] Problem with Flex Samples Web services.

2005-11-08 Thread Kevin Roche

Kevin Roche

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex2: pricing info

2005-11-08 Thread Anatole Tartakovsky
One extra comment that I think Dave is trying to get across - MSFT goes it's
own way most of the time - till it seas the real threat to their products.
They can have superior products built in "catch up" process. Do not
underestimate their ability to quickly build competitive products or even
superior ones - given permission from the management.
As an example in Flash category they had IE 5.5/6 since 2000 - very
capable platform with integrated XMLParser/HTTPRequests/WebServices, custom
tags with multiple inheritance (DHTML behaviors - superior to any XML tags
at this point in any respect but performance), ability to integrate compiled
JavaScript or any other scripting languages - in short much more then needed
for regular Flex application.
They did not see competition or money in that market and they basically
advised people not to use it by removing documentation/libraries/materials.
They moved all remaining developers of the original team to Avalon and such
till Firefox came out. Even at that time they were not going to make
superior product but were going for "biggest bang for a buck" to give them
comparable functionality to Firefox. The people at MSFT do not see Firefox
as a threat - and rather would play with their own toys like Avalon they
have been erfecting for number of years now. They know that they can build
superior Internet product by just integrating their existing technologies -
but naturally have as much desire of getting into 6 years old codebase as
anyone would.

Flash/Flex would not have such easy time as Firefox. It is new
Platform - goes right in the heart of Microsoft business . It makes easy to
create very interactive collaboration corporate products - actually
Macromedia should start making small promotions like "copy of Flex to the
best open source Excel written in Flex/Flash". And Macromedia needs to move
very fast - getting the best resources not taken by Google and Microsoft in
order to deliver much more robust product.

It is doable. Powersoft was successful on fighting VB for 6 years - with
Microsoft using it over VB for internal systems. Macromedia needs superior
product and better marketing program - and a LOT OF 3RD PARTY SUPPORT to
sell high-end products. They have time advantage that was built over years
and will not last to long - I do not think we have more then a year to make
it widespread.

I wonder how many people in here would like to be interested in 3rd
party product similar to MyEclipse (MyFlex?) - essentially set of objects
and tools that automate development of Flex application by the means of code
generators and pre-made objects. Huge areas like form creations/management,
reporting, SQL generation/mapping, etc need to be streamlined as the product
goes from early adopters to corporate mainstream. I would gladly be a part
of such project and contribute the products I developed in the last few
years and I am sure most of the people in the community have piles of stuff
that begs to be reused.
That can accelerate adoption and give Macromedia much needed support in
the unavoidable clash.

Thank you,
Anatole Tartakovsky

RE: [flexcoders] Brocade Case Study

2005-11-08 Thread Dekayd Media Inc.
That would cost you a lot.

The going rate for Flex developers is around $80/hr.

That is a pretty complex app.

It would take a team of people to build and test.

Can anyone give me an idea how long it would take and what budget you
would need to have an app like the Brocade link below developed?

http://flexapps.macromedia.com/flex/brocade/app.mxml

I realise that its a difficult question but I just want to get a gut
feeling for the size of cash you would guys think it would need.

Thanks

[flexcoders] remote object without mx:RemoteObject, is it possible?

2005-11-08 Thread mpaliyenko
Hi guys
I'm quite new to Flex and have a qusetion.
Is it possible to perform server call without declaring RemoteObject
in MXML. The reason why I need it is following:
I'm trying to fix some things that I do not like in cairnrogm
framework. One of them is that all remote objects must be declared in
single place.
We have a tens of applications that share the same services and I do
not want to create the single Service.mxml for them also I do not like
to create tens of them and duplicate services declarations.
Another thing I do not like is code duplications

result and fault attributes are the same. I think this can be fixed if
i could initialize RemoteObject from ActionScript programmatically.

I was trying to find the solution in docs but they sucks. They declare
mx.servicetags.RemoteObject as tag and since the source of that tag is
not availiable I do not know how to initialize it programmatically.
Can anyone help?
Thanx in advance
Mykola
