No, sorry if I implied that. I don't think the upgrade will
be hard in anyway. I am sure a lot of users will do it as soon as the player is
available.

Not a resistance on the user's part, my point is just that,
like any browser upgrade or web control/addin upgrade, the casual internet users
are not very quick to update. If adobe has plans of "pushing" the upgrade to all
existing player users, then I am sure that will increase the adoption rate very
rapidly. I must say I have not read anything about the upgrade plans, so I can't
speak to that.

But delivering an application that requires brand new
software in order to be used is just always a risk - hopefully Adobe does enough
to mitigate it that all of the early flex 2 adopters will not face problems with
potential users not having the required player for the first few months after
it's release.

This seems to contradict what Adobe has said about the
"seamless" upgrading to

the consumer market user
to not upgrade?

If so, why? Will theupgrading not be as easy as
we think?

I definitely agree with your points regarding licensing,
but the problem with adoption of flex 2.0 as the platform for consumer apps is
the need for the adoption of the new player. I personally would not want to
release a production flex 2.0 app to the world, on a public site, until the
player has saturated the market (50% + or more). Now if you can somewhat control
your target audience (i.e. intranet apps, or niche userbase, etc) then it is not
a problem.

But it will be a while before the yahoo's and amazon's
would adopt flex 2.

Just my opinion.

IMHO, only existing
clients with large applications will stay with 1.5/as2. The licence cost
of 1.5 prevented all but large enterprise clients from adopting Flex. 2.0
breaks that barrier, and any shop can now build Flex apps of any size for the
cost of development. The third party market for 1.5/AS2 will shrink.
The market for 2.0/AS3 will grow. How fast? Sorry, I cant really even guess,
but fast.

If a client is seeking a set of custom
components and plans to use them for building applications for other clients in
the future what would you advise them about building these components in AS2
versus AS3. Flex components are obviously more convenient for me to build
but what is the honest answer if asked "How long will it be before my clients
are using these?" in regards to their own clients and ActionScript 3
components? Mani

[flexcoders] Re: How can i disable/trap f5 when a flash movie has focus?

2006-06-02 Thread Tim Hoff

Unfortunately, when a Flash player application has focus in IE, you
can not trap and disable the F5 keyboard event before the browser
window is refreshed. Flex applications do have the abitity to trap
keyboard events. However, if the event's key, or key combination,
is recognized by the browser, the browser will react to the event
before the Flash player application is notified. To my knowledge,
many people have addressed this exact same issue, with no solution.
There are some javacript functions available that solve this problem
at the browser level, but fail when the Flash Player's ActiveX
control has focus.

Sorry for the bad news,
Tim Hoff

refreshes.

 I've tried removing the keyListener inside the onKeyDown handler
but
 that doesn't stop the event from bubbling out to the browser.

[flexcoders] ExternalInterface | How to get called from flash inxml flavor?

2006-06-02 Thread drome.dario

Hi guys,
I have seen that ActiveX version of Flash Player issues an event
(FlashCall) that describes using xml the function call that the
programmer has called with ExternalInterface.call method.
That xml has the form : invoke
name=thenameofthefunctionarguments.../arguments/invoke
However, regarding the NPPlugin version, when you make
a ExternalInterface.call flash always ask to its container
to evaluate a chunk of _javascript_ code.
Also, both flash player versions (ActiveX and NPPlugin) provide
the CallFunction method that allows you to pass, in a single
parameter, an xml (in the same form as the one from FlashCall
event) describing the actionscript function (and its arguments) to be
called.

I would need to use the xml flavor in both directions (flash to
container and container to flash) independently of the version of
Plash Player being used (ActiveX or NPPlugin). The reason: I do not
have any problem parsing and consuming xml and, however, I do not
want to write a _javascript_ interpreter at all.

Does anyone know if there is any possibility to instruct flash
npplugin, in any way, to describe the function calls using xml
instead of _javascript_?

Any suggestion will be welcome.

Best regards.

[flexcoders] OpenAMF, Tomcat and Flex2B3

2006-06-02 Thread Andrea Varga

Hi

I have been trying to set up a project using Java, OpenAMF, Tomcat,
Flex2B2 and Cairngorm.
I'm kinda new to OpenAMF andTomcat (and usually to application servers)
and I have found the docs confusing.
Finally i managed to get the remoting working.
I can call my services, and get back the result, but I am having
problems with my VO class mappings in both directions (if I send
Strings, everything works fine)
I have read in previous posts, that mapping from Java to AS was not
working in Flash Player 8.5 (but should work from AS to Java), but I
couldn't find anything about Flash Player 9.
Actually, I have found this in Carlos Rovira's blog: El problema de
mapeo de clases de Java hacia ActionScript está resuelto en el nuevo
*Flash Player 9 Beta*. Unfortunatelly, I don't understand spanish, but
it's close to romanian, does that mean that the problem has been solved
in Flash Player 9 or the opposite ? :)

I have a LoginVO class:
Java code:
---
package com.spindevelopment.model.vo;

public class LoginVO {
 public String username;
 public String password;

 public LoginVO() {
 }
}

AS code:
-
package com.spindevelopment.model.vo {

 import org.nevis.cairngorm.vo.ValueObject;
 [RemoteClass(alias=com.spindevelopment.model.vo.LoginVO)]
 [Bindable]
 public class LoginVO implements ValueObject {
 public var username:String;
 public var password:String;
 }
}

In openamf-congid.xml I added this:
custom-class-mapping
 java-classcom.spindevelopment.model.vo.LoginVO/java-class
 custom-classcom.spindevelopment.model.vo.LoginVO/custom-class
/custom-class-mapping

In my java service class, I have a simple test method, where I return a
String with the 2 properties of LoginVO:

public String doLogin(LoginVO pLogin ) {
 return new String(un:  + pLogin.username + , pass:
+pLogin.password);
}

The returned string is: un: null, pass: null;

Here is my Tomcat log:

02.06.2006 15:54:45 org.openamf.io.AMFDeserializer init

[flexcoders] Re: No FontManager provided after migrating to Beta 3

2006-06-02 Thread bronzemug

Fixed --- flash.fonts should replace macromedia.fonts in the
config

swfkit.jar contains the font manager classes
They are BatikFontManager and JREFontManager
*BUT* they are now contained in the package flash.fonts.

The flex-config.xml file should be changed to read

 managers
 manager-classflash.fonts.JREFontManager/manager-class
 manager-classflash.fonts.BatikFontManager/manager-class
 /managers

using flash.fonts instead of macromedia.fonts.

[I am suprised no one has come across this before]

 Yes, that's a bug in the default flex-config.xml. Change

 managers
 manager-
classmacromedia.fonts.JREFontManager/manager-class
 manager-
classmacromedia.fonts.BatikFontManager/manager-class

 manager-

 In compilerfonts and it should work.

 I am using the standard flex-config.xml that comes with Beta3

[flexcoders] Re: Remoting configuration in flex-services.xml

2006-06-02 Thread bronzemug

flex-service.xml no longer exists in FDS. It is no named flex-
enterprise-services.xml. This file imports a number of other files via
this:
 services
 service-include file-path=flex-remoting-service.xml /
 service-include file-path=flex-proxy-service.xml /
 service-include file-path=flex-message-service.xml /
 service-include file-path=flex-data-service.xml /
 /services

You will want to modify the flex-remoting-service.xml file

RE: [flexcoders] Re: How can i disable/trap f5 when a flash movie has focus?

2006-06-02 Thread Ben Lucyk

Hi Steven,

If we cant stop the F5 key press
event from bubbling to IE and refreshing the browser, we can at least warn the
user before it happens.  This old trick
still works for me when the Flash Player has focus.

html

head

script

!--

            function warnUser() {

            event.returnValue
= Waning message that appears in between the default text;

            }

// --

/script

/head

body
class=GramE>warnUser();

When the user tries to navigate away from
the current page (including pressing F5), they get an OK / Cancel prompt with
your message sandwiched in between IEs hard coded text.  Pressing OK moves ahead with their
actions.  Pressing Cancel keeps them
right where they are

Hope that might be of some help,

Unfortunately, when a
Flash player application has focus in IE, you
can not trap and disable the F5 keyboard event before the browser
window is refreshed.

Sorry for the bad news,
Tim Hoff

 I have the _javascript_ in place to prevent this on the rest of the

refreshes.

 I've tried removing the keyListener inside the onKeyDown handler
but
 that doesn't stop the event from bubbling out to the browser.

So just run fdb on the same host as the web browser and user 'localhost' :-)

OK
It seems there a little misunderstanding from me.
I just want to debug from the Flex Builder (fdb don't run when its open

[flexcoders] Re: Apparent bug with static variable access in bindings (f2b3)

2006-06-02 Thread n51red

I was aware that changes to static variables no longer trigger
binding to execute, but including static variables in a binding
shouldn't cause compilation errors.
Considering the fact that the compiler fails to identify the line
that contains the error, and the fact that the error messages make no
sense in that context, lead me to the conclusion this must be a
compiler bug.

[flexcoders] Instantiation and setting problems

2006-06-02 Thread Suzy Lawson

I anyone else having issues trying to set values on objects for newly
instantiated objects in an object graph with 3 or more layers?

I have the following:

ClassA {
 public var classB : ClassB;
 public var classC : ClassC;
}

ClassB {
 public var classD : ClassD;
}

ClassC {
 public var textVal : String='';
}

and i have a value sets in the ModelLocator (cairngorm) class like so:
public var allClassAs : ArrayCollection;
public var selectedClassA : ClassA;

The problem is if I retrieve a single 'ClassA' from the collection of
allClassAs using the ID of the selectedClassA, then try to make a call
like this:
classA.classC.text=Whatever;

The mxml field I have bound to that value never displays and I get the
following debug error.

error during evaluation
no such variable: classA.classC.textVal

This kind of makes sense since classC wasn't initialized yet, so even
if I change ClassA to be:
ClassA {
 public var classB : ClassB = new ClassB();
 public var classC : ClassC = new ClassC();
}

I still get the same error. In the UI, if I click back, it appears
correctly, but the first time it always fails. It seems like the set
(classA.classC.text=Whatever;) is getting called faster then the
object can be initialized (constructed).

I've had similar problems when calling:
var myXML = new XML(event.target.data);
[EMAIL PROTECTED]3232;

When I debug this, myXML is still null when the 2nd line is called. A
work around is to instantiate the XML on startup so the XML is there
before calling the set on @ID, but means more memory.

Anyone else hitting these issues?

Hi Andrea,The problem was solved in last beta (FP9 beta3), so you can pass VOs from AS to Java and from Java to AS.Your code looks ok, for me but the logs says something is happen, maybe...are you using AMF0?, remember that in FP9 default is AMF3.
On 6/2/06, Andrea Varga [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Finally i managed to get the remoting working.
I can call my services, and get back the result, but I am having

I have read in previous posts, that mapping from Java to AS was not

it's close to romanian, does that mean that the problem has been solved

I have a LoginVO class:

 import org.nevis.cairngorm.vo.ValueObject;
 [RemoteClass(alias=com.spindevelopment.model.vo.LoginVO)]
 [Bindable]
 public class LoginVO implements ValueObject {
 public var username:String;
 public var password:String;
 }
}

In openamf-congid.xml I added this:
custom-class-mapping
 java-classcom.spindevelopment.model.vo.LoginVO/java-class
 custom-classcom.spindevelopment.model.vo.LoginVO/custom-class
/custom-class-mapping

In my java service class, I have a simple test method, where I return a
String with the 2 properties of LoginVO:

public String doLogin(LoginVO pLogin ) {
 return new String(un:  + pLogin.username + , pass:
+pLogin.password);
}

The returned string is: un: null, pass: null;

Here is my Tomcat log:

[flexcoders] f2b3 custom ToolTip troubles

I've been replacing tool tips with arbitrary IUComonents by

oscillation of mouseOut, mouseOver events, with the tooltip flashing on
and off.

Does anyone have any tips on getting this functionallity without
breaking the tooltip mechanism?

[flexcoders] Column Chart Help

2006-06-02 Thread Ethan Miller

Greetings -

Having a hard time getting a very simple column chart working, code
below. Category labels on the x axis render, as do numeric labels on
the y axis. But none of the data, ie columns renders. If I change
LinearAxis to CategoryAxis with dataProvider={dashboardAC}, the
data does render, but the values (against the y axis), are not
sorted numerically, rather they follwo the order in the array, ie
5000, 1, 2000, 17000.

Thoughts?

Also, is there a way to prevent a row in the array (Total in this
case) from dispalying, ie I only want columsn for the indvidual
cateogory values, not the total.

thanks, ethan

[flexcoders] Re: dynamic colors for pieseries wedges

2006-06-02 Thread Jason

No ideas?

--- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Jason [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 I'm having a bit of a time figuring this one out. I have a PieChart
 that I'm using to map data that fits into certain categories. I want
 to always have each category given a fixed color. So, for example, I
 might have categories Normal (green), Warning (yellow) and Error
 (red). I'm throwing different data sets at the chart, sorted by total
 (so the slices will be arranged in order of size). Sometimes this
may be:

 Normal: 1
 Warning: 5
 Error: 10

 Or

 Warning: 1
 Normal: 5
 Error: 2

 Or

 Error: 1
 Normal: 3
 Warning: 10

 Or

 Error: 5
 Normal: 10

 (note that Warning is missing because it didn't show up)

 Now, in all these cases, I always want Normal to be green, etc. As
 far as I can tell, you can use a array of solidcolor fills. But it
 only cares about the ordinal position. So say I give it green, yellow
 and red. It will work fine in the first case. But in all the other
 cases, it won't be right because the order is different or some
 elements might be missing.

 I'm pretty new to flex so maybe I'm totally missing something.

RE: [flexcoders] F2B3: Javascript security

2006-06-02 Thread Lisa Nelson

Tim,

Did Rost's suggestion help your situation? I have a
similar issue. This works:

ExternalInterface.call("alert","Hey this is an external
interface call.");

But when I try to call one of our own _javascript_
functions, it just doesn't seem to find the function and does absolutely
nothing. I even tried getting rid of all the parameters, and just sticking
an alert call as the first thing in the _javascript_ function. It is just
not reaching the function. In my case, neither the
param name="AllowScriptAccess" value="always" nor the cross-domain-policy made any
difference.

I am
super-new to Flex. I am trying to migrate a 1.5 application to 2.0 and am
going through major teething pains. So it is very possible I have some
"dumb" problem that more experienced Flexers would not
have.

flexcoders@yahoogroups.comSubject: [flexcoders] F2B3: _javascript_
security

Im trying to develop a Flex app
that calls a _javascript_ function in the container page. I did a simple test app
using the call() method of the ExternalInterface API, and it worked fine with
the HTML page and the SWF file in the original compile folder. But when I moved
both files, the attempt to run the _javascript_ produces the following
ActionScript error box:

SecurityError: Error #2060: Security
sandbox violation: ExternalInterface caller file://C:\ExternalTest.swf may not
access file://C:\Container.htm.

at flash.external::ExternalInterface$/call()

at SimpleNETComp/::btn1_click()

at SimpleNETComp/__btn1_click()

So, I tried switching it to call the
_javascript_ using the navigateToUrl() method of ActionScript. Again, it worked
when the files were in the original compile folder, but when I move them to
another folder, I get the error:

SecurityError: Error #2051: Security
sandbox violation: file://C:\ExternalTest.swf may not evaluate scripting URLs
within file://C:\Container.htm (allowScriptAccess is 'always'). Attempted URL
was _javascript_:test('called with navigateToUrl')

at ExternalTest/::btn1_click()

at ExternalTest/__btn1_click()

By the way, the HTML file contains
only the basic object wrapper, none of the history or version checking stuff,
and I changed the SWF parameter to try and open the security up, as
follows:

param name="AllowScriptAccess" value="always"

Any ideas how to get the calls to
work? How does the compile location get stored into the SWF (if thats whats
happening)?

Cheers, Tim

[flexcoders] flex 1.5 : how to lock Application during popup creation process ?

2006-06-02 Thread Antoine Malpel

I use a lot of PopUpManager.createPopUp( ) in order to avoid
background interface's buttons etc.. this works well ! the use can
only interact with the PopUp-ed object...

But I noticed that when a user click a second time on the same button
well... the popup is created two times ...
I tried to use, like shown on Flex Explorer Example :

this is called just because calling createPopUp :

 function setBlockingCursor() {
 // Create an empty UIObject popup that blocks user input
 inputBlocker = popupWindow(UIObject);
 CursorManager.setBusyCursor();
 }

then with the popup-ed creationcomplete event :

 function removeBlockingCursor() {
 // Remove our blocking popup
 inputBlocker.deletePopUp();
 CursorManager.removeBusyCursor();
 }

so I got the cursor but the user still can double click on the button ...

Any go way to avoid this ?

I also do not understand how I can 'place' the popUp as my application
is centered on the window browser ... so using .x = 0 from the popup it
will appear at left when someOtherCanvasInApplication.x = 0 but it
rights (relative to its parent)

[flexcoders] Problem with drawn lines appearing outside the bounds of container on resize.

2006-06-02 Thread Steven Toth

I have a Canvas that I'm drawing on using the graphics.lineTo() method
of the Canvas. When I resize the browser window so the the Canvas gets
smaller the lines that were in the Canvas now extend outside the bounds
of the Canvas and show on other containers. The only thing I have been
able to do to remove them is to call the graphics.clear() of the
Canvas. The clipContent property of the Canvas is set to true and it
still shows the lines outside of the bounds of the Canvas. Is this
expected behavior? What needs to be done to have the lines drawn on
the Canvas resize with the Canvas to stay contained within the bounds
of the Canvas? I expected that to happen by default. I'm using Flex 2
Beta 3.

Thanks.

[flexcoders] Re: flex 1.5 : how to lock Application during popup creation process ?

2006-06-02 Thread Suzy Lawson

You can create a global public variable Boolean that you set to true
when the window is open and set to false when it closeed.

var public isPoppedOpen : Boolean = false;

Then when a user clicks the button, set it to true.
Have logic in your window pop method that checks if this value is
true, if so, then do nothing.

Then in the close button of the PopUp Window, set the variable back to
false;

[flexcoders] Re: flex 1.5 : how to lock Application during popup creation process ?

2006-06-02 Thread Doug Lowder

You can set the 3rd parameter of createPopUp() to true to create a
modal popup, which will block input in everything in your app other
than the popup window:

 var myPopUp = PopUpManager.createPopUp(parent, class, true, ...);

You can then center that popup with respect to any component with
centerPopUp(). For example, to center the popup in the application:

 myPopup.centerPopUp(parentApplication);

Also, you can get a nice dimming effect for the app when a modal
popup is displayed by using the following:

 new Color(myPopup.modalWindow).setRGB(0x33);

RE: [flexcoders] Instantiation and setting problems

2006-06-02 Thread Peter Farland

Where are you declaring these classes?

-Original Message-
From: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Suzy Lawson

To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com
Subject: [flexcoders] Instantiation and setting problems

I anyone else having issues trying to set values on objects for newly instantiated objects in an object graph with 3 or more layers?

I have the following:

ClassA {
 public var classB : ClassB;
 public var classC : ClassC;
}

ClassB {
 public var classD : ClassD;
}

ClassC {
 public var textVal : String='';
}

and i have a value sets in the ModelLocator (cairngorm) class like so:
public var allClassAs : ArrayCollection; public var selectedClassA : ClassA;

The problem is if I retrieve a single 'ClassA' from the collection of allClassAs using the ID of the selectedClassA, then try to make a call like this:
classA.classC.text=Whatever;

The mxml field I have bound to that value never displays and I get the following debug error.

error during evaluation
no such variable: classA.classC.textVal

This kind of makes sense since classC wasn't initialized yet, so even if I change ClassA to be:
ClassA {
 public var classB : ClassB = new ClassB(); public var classC : ClassC = new ClassC(); }

I still get the same error. In the UI, if I click back, it appears correctly, but the first time it always fails. It seems like the set
(classA.classC.text=Whatever;) is getting called faster then the object can be initialized (constructed).

I've had similar problems when calling:
var myXML = new XML(event.target.data);
[EMAIL PROTECTED]3232;

When I debug this, myXML is still null when the 2nd line is called. A work around is to instantiate the XML on startup so the XML is there before calling the set on @ID, but means more memory.

Anyone else hitting these issues?

[flexcoders] roll-over-color CSS property

2006-06-02 Thread klumikaze

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm skinning my application, and when
trying to use default buttons, I can't change the text color on a roll

other options but haven't found anything.

Anybody else having issues with this?

[flexcoders] Flex 1.5 Custom AssetRenderer

2006-06-02 Thread Battershall, Jeff

I'm trying to create a custom AssetRenderer class for a line chart's
point renderer that will import a swf which has the capability to fire
events handled by other elements in the movie.

The first problem is that if I use the super.draw(target,rc) method, the
aspect ratio of the .swf is skewed like the DiamondRenderer does.

It would help tremendously if I could see how the AssetRenderer class
does its work precisely, but I cannot find the source code on my system.
For example, I don't know what the target UI Object is. I basically
need to be able to assign data to this particular point on the chart and
pass that data back to an event handler. I've already managed to only
have my assets appear at intervals, now I need to have those points be
really smart. One thing I need to be able to do is have these data
points act like radio buttons - only one selected at a time.

I'm open to suggestions on how to achieve what I want:

1) Data points that act like buttons with on off states and support
radio-button style interaction. If I knew what var in the AssetRenderer
class refers to the symbol instance for the point in question, I could
probably accomplish this pretty easily given that there's only only one
pointRenderer for each line series.

2) Data point instances that can be containers for data and fire events
with that data to some event handler in the movie.

I've been replacing tool tips with arbitrary IUComonents by
intersepting the toolTipCreate method and changing the toolTip property
to my component. This works quite well except for when the tooltip is
does not have room to appear to the bottom left of the cursor. In this

oscillation of mouseOut, mouseOver events, with the tooltip flashing on

Does anyone have any tips on getting this functionallity without
breaking the tooltip mechanism?

RE: [flexcoders] E4X, SOAP and namespaces, oh my!

2006-06-02 Thread Peter Farland

Ben, if a parent type declares the default namespace (as it does on
GetDocumentResponse) then child elements that do not redeclare the
default namespace nor use a prefix to another namespace will inherit
that parent namespace.

Subject: [flexcoders] E4X, SOAP and namespaces, oh my!

There seems to be a significant shortage of information regarding the
use of these 3 things together. For the life of me I cannot solve this
seemingly simple problem. I have a SOAP call whose returned xml starts
out like this:

soap:Envelope xmlns:soap=http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/
xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance
xmlns:xsd=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema
 soap:Header
 wsu:Timestamp
xmlns:wsu=http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2002/07/utility
 wsu:Created2006-06-02T19:48:15Z/wsu:Created
 wsu:Expires2006-06-02T19:53:15Z/wsu:Expires
 /wsu:Timestamp
 /soap:Header
 soap:Body
 GetDocumentResponse
xmlns=http://mysite.com/BackOffice/DocumentMetadata

But when I use the following code to retrieve content from it

namespace dm = http://mysite.com/BackOffice/DocumentMetadata;
use namespace dm;
var x:XML;
x = new XML(event.message.body);
wtf = new XMLListCollection(x..RPRDocumentHistory.Entry);

I get a list of Entry nodes that have all 4 namespace declarations
attached to them even though the original nodes didn't have any.
Additionally, my DataGrid that uses wtf as its dataProvider gets
populated with blank entries (I can roll over them but no text is
displayed), which I have experienced before and is somehow related to
namespace issues.

How can I fix this? Are there any articles/tutorials that address these
topics in depth?

Thanks,
Ben

[flexcoders] Constants in a separate .as file?

2006-06-02 Thread Charles

Hi everyone,
This seems like a very simple thing to do, but I can't figure out why it won't work. Basically, what I am aiming for is to have a separate .as file that contains only constants (no classes or functions...just constants). I have this ActionScript class, say "ClassOne.as"that uses a lot of constants. I have another ActionScript class, say "ClassTwo.as"that also uses the same constants. Right now, all of the same constantsare declared twice, once in each class. But what I want is to makea seperate file to just hold those constants and then "import" them from both classes, but I can't figure it out.

I know that to "import" external .as files in an .mxml file, you can just use Script source="file_name.as"/. But, to "import" an external .as file from within another .as file, I don't know how. I've tried using import files.*, but since the file is just a list of constants, and not a class, it doesn't work. I've also tried include "files/file_name.as", but I get an error for having "more than one externally visible definition"...?

Any help would be great...my code is too bloated to stand right now, with all this redundant code...haha

Thanks in advance.

Charles

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Instantiation and setting problems

2006-06-02 Thread Peter Farland

I'd have to see the code to really understand what is going on, but can you avoid doing anything in a constructor and use a button or something to trigger the work to see if that's the issue?

I'm using the Cairngorm framework, so in the implented Command classes...

For the XML problem, it's in a class that the Command class calls. The constructor load the XML file stored locally, then the completeHandler calls XML(event.target.data) and assigns the XML to a local variable.

However, when I instantiate this object, then call a method on it, the XML is still null. If I put a timer on it to stall for a second, it's there

 Subject: [flexcoders] Instantiation and setting problems

 I anyone else having issues trying to set values on objects for
newly instantiated objects in an object graph with 3 or more layers?

 I have the following:

 ClassA {
 public var classB : ClassB;
 public var classC : ClassC;
 }

 ClassB {
 public var classD : ClassD;
 }

 ClassC {
 public var textVal : String='';
 }

 and i have a value sets in the ModelLocator (cairngorm) class like so:
 public var allClassAs : ArrayCollection; public var selectedClassA :
ClassA;

 The problem is if I retrieve a single 'ClassA' from the collection
of allClassAs using the ID of the selectedClassA, then try to make a call like this:
 classA.classC.text=Whatever;

 The mxml field I have bound to that value never displays and I get
the following debug error.

 error during evaluation
 no such variable: classA.classC.textVal

 This kind of makes sense since classC wasn't initialized yet, so
even if I change ClassA to be:
 ClassA {
 public var classB : ClassB = new ClassB(); public var classC :
ClassC = new ClassC(); }

 I still get the same error. In the UI, if I click back, it appears
correctly, but the first time it always fails. It seems like the set
 (classA.classC.text=Whatever;) is getting called faster then the
object can be initialized (constructed).

 I've had similar problems when calling:
 var myXML = new XML(event.target.data); [EMAIL PROTECTED]3232;

 When I debug this, myXML is still null when the 2nd line is called.
A work around is to instantiate the XML on startup so the XML is there before calling the set on @ID, but means more memory.

 Anyone else hitting these issues?

Re: [flexcoders] Constants in a separate .as file?

2006-06-02 Thread Clint Modien

Hi Charles... you may find it helpful to break your general constants up into there own classes with their own packages to avoid variable naming issues.To answer your question though...If you make the consts you have static as in
public final class com.company.printing.PrintJobOrientation {public static const LANDSCAPE:String = landscape;public static const PORTRAIT:String = portrait;}you can then use those constants like so...
imports com.company.printing.PrintJobOrientationpublic class com.company.printing.PrintJob {public layout:String;public function print() {if(this.layout =
PrintJobOrientation.LANDSCAPE) { //DO SOMETHING}}}
Hope that helps.On 6/2/06, Charles [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Thanks, Peter, good to know.Any idea how to solve my DataGrid dataProvider problem? Its columns use child nodes as their dataField attribute but it seems like they are not accessible because of the namespace being there. Do I need to somehow strip out the namespaces or include the namespace in the dataField attribute? I know this is doable, and probably simple, but I can't figure it out or find it documented anywhere.

[flexcoders] Why is this happening? Blank screen On Firefox - urls provided

2006-06-02 Thread josulliv101

Hi everyone,

I just got my feet wet with flex 2 beta 3 (really enjoying it by the
way). I cannot figure out why I can only view my flex apps on IE - on
firefox/any mozilla based browser, I just see a blank green screen.

Here's a test I did with a very simple example that just loads some
xml into a textarea:
http://www.myjavaserver.com/~josulliv101/testing/testing.html

You can see that all the supporting files are present at:
http://www.myjavaserver.com/~josulliv101/testing/

The weird thing is that when I am viewing the app locally with
firefox, it's fine. When I upload it with the supporting files to the
server, no luck. I have no problem viewing other people's flex2 apps
on firefox.

Any help is appreciated.
Joe

[flexcoders] Re: Constants in a separate .as file?

2006-06-02 Thread Charles

Hi Clint,

Yes, I actually did think about putting these constants in their own
class, but I was trying to avoid it...not only for simplicity, but
also to compact the references I would have to make - i.e. just
refer to it as LANDSCAPE instead of ClassName.LANDSCAPE...mainly
because there are a lot of constants that I want to store, and I
reference them a lot in the other classes.

BUT, I didn't think about variable naming issues, so I think I will
actually go with dropping them in a class.

Thanks!

Charles

constants up
 into there own classes with their own packages to avoid variable
naming
 issues.

 To answer your question though...

 If you make the consts you have static as in

 public final class com.company.printing.PrintJobOrientation {
 public static const LANDSCAPE:String = landscape;
 public static const PORTRAIT:String = portrait;
 }

 you can then use those constants like so...

 imports com.company.printing.PrintJobOrientation
 public class com.company.printing.PrintJob {
 public layout:String;
 public function print() {
 if(this.layout = PrintJobOrientation.LANDSCAPE) {
 //DO SOMETHING
 }
 }
 }

 Hope that helps.

  Hi everyone,

  This seems like a very simple thing to do, but I can't figure
out why it
  won't work. Basically, what I am aiming for is to have a
separate .as file
  that contains only constants (no classes or functions...just
constants). I
  have this ActionScript class, say ClassOne.as that uses a lot
of
  constants. I have another ActionScript class, say ClassTwo.as
that also
  uses the same constants. Right now, all of the same constants
are declared
  twice, once in each class. But what I want is to make a
seperate file to
  just hold those constants and then import them from both
classes, but I
  can't figure it out.

  I know that to import external .as files in an .mxml file, you
can just
  use Script source=file_name.as/. But, to import an
external .as
  file from within another .as file, I don't know how. I've tried
using import
  files.*, but since the file is just a list of constants, and not
a class,
  it doesn't work. I've also tried include files/file_name.as,
but I get
  an error for having more than one externally visible
definition...?

  Any help would be great...my code is too bloated to stand right
now, with
  all this redundant code...haha

  Thanks in advance.
