RE: [flexcoders] Experience with the Adobe Developer Support Program

Ok, will send money tomorrow ;-)

Seriously, I think Flex is a winner, just requires hard work from you
guys on an ongoing basis. Quite frankly, Flex is the only truly integrated RIA
platform – everything else pieced together and it shows.

Thanks for your answer. One of the reasons why I am considering the
dev support program is that I have been on the flexcoder list for a while now
and many of my posts remained unanswered. I am not blaming the list –
it’s just the nature of the biest: some problems are complex and require
work to reproduce – you cannot expect your peers to invest that kind of
time. Unless someone has already been there and experienced the same issue or
challenge, chances you get an answer are slim...understandably. Speaking
of “shareholder” – I was considering investing into your
company’s stock. I think that Flex has all the right ingredients for a
disruptive technology (=revolution) and I like the grassroots approach –
that’s how good things are made – but I am wondering how important
a share this has in the overall Adobe portfolio. If “Flex Inc.” was
traded on NASDAQ I would bet on it big time. ;-)

I believe that the enterprise developer support is not going to
provide coaching. It should provide bug support though (the turnaround is
approximately 1 business day). I think it could be a good thing, but you
may want to keep an eye on flexcoders and the Adobe forums for a while and see
how you’re doing after a week or two and if this might be
sufficient. Of course as an Adobe shareholder/employee I of course
recommend you buying support J

about 1500$ per year, if I remember correctly. Before I do spend that kind of

I have a

[flexcoders] Adding rows to dataGrid programatically

2006-11-01 Thread iko_knyphausen

Trying to add rows to a datagrid programmatically. Works ok using the dataProvider.addItem function, however it requires a named "row-node" - see below. I would like to make this more generic. Is there a way to do this without knowing each rows element name?
    private function addRow() : void    {     this.dg.dataProvider.addItem(XML(""));    }
Thanks.

We have not put out a code coverage tool

So, long
ago, I heard a rumor that there was an internal Code Coverage tool for Flex 1.5
that never got ported to 2.0 Is that still the case or is there something out
there that can do Code Coverage Testing? ( Matt C? anyone? )

Is anyone using a tool that they can point me at for Flex 2.0 / 2.01?
Here are the wishlist items:

Statement Coverage
- Has each line of the source code been executed and tested?
Condition Coverage
- Has each evaluation point (such as a true/false decision) been executed
and tested?
Path Coverage
DeadWood
Copy/Pasted Code

[flexcoders] Re: Skinning woes

2006-11-01 Thread zzwi89
nj,

Thank you for the response! This is what I'd been leaning towards
believing but was holding out hope that because in Flash, the Panel
skin, for example, is broken into 3 parts, that Flex would be able to
resize them. Oh well!

Now, does anyone know how to reskin a component during execution? I
would like to call a function that does Panel.styleName = "newStyle",
but this has no effect.

Thank you!

RE: [flexcoders] Total rows in a DataGrid

2006-11-01 Thread Iko Knyphausen

Try dataProvider.length

-Iko

Hi, this
is a newbie question:

I have a data grid that base data from a HTTPService (RSS feed), which loaded
OK.

How do I find out how many total rows are in
the DataGrid? (ie. something like newsFeed.items.length
etc.)

"{externalNewsRSS.lastResult.rss.channel.item}"
visible="false">

  "true"/>

I searched documentation and forums but don't seem to find an answer. Thanks
for your help!

RE: [flexcoders] flex2ant

2006-11-01 Thread Luke Schreur
Hi Tom,

I will have a look at it ASAP (means when time allows me to).

I haven't used repeatable arguments yet myself but the way I understood
the repeatable parameters were supposed to be used was something like:

--library-path=/some/path /some/other/path

So, in the ANT build file the parameter for the externalLibraryPath
attribute becomes something like:

externalLibraryPath="/some/path /some/other/path"

Hope this fixes it, it not let me know.

-Luke

PS: It would be great if you could report any inconsistencies off list
by mailing me directly on info {at} flex2ant {dot} org, thanks!

Oh, and libraryPath doesn't seem to work how I expect - it functions
like the
command lien argument --library-path=, not --library-path+= i.e. it
nukes the
main library path.
libraryPath isn't repeatable (gives "Attribute already specified").
Tyring to enter both the SDK lib path and the local lib. dir. doesn't
seem to
work as I can't guess the right deliminter.

Hopefully these few hickups can easily be sorted out for v0.2, as it'd
be a
lot easier and more standard than writing a build shell script for each
project.

Hi,

The intent of graphical skinning (which is what the templates in that
article provide) is that it allows you to replace the default
component skin with specific custom artwork. Because this is custom
artwork, Flex doesn't know anything about its internal structure, so
it doesn't know what part of the artwork is the "border" that you want
to make thicker.

The default component skins (HaloAeon) can respond to styles set on
the component (border thickness, background color, etc.) because
they're implemented programmatically--in other words, they draw
themselves at runtime based on those style values. When you replace
the default programmatic skin with a graphical skin, most of these
styles no longer apply; the assumption is that you've "baked" the
exact appearance you want into the graphical skin.

If you need to create custom Panel skins that have different border
thicknesses, you have a couple of options:

-- Draw multiple graphical skins that have the different border
thicknesses you want, and create CSS rules for the various skins using
"." names (e.g. ".thinPanel", ".thickPanel"). You can then attach
them to different Panels using the "styleName" property (e.g.
, ).

(Note that if you do this, you will still need to set the
borderThickness styles as well for each skin. Even though the
borderThickness styles don't change the appearance of the graphical
artwork you provide, they do tell Flex how much padding to put around
the content so it doesn't overlap the borders you drew into the
artwork. See "Setting the Panel content area" on this page:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/articles/flex_skins_08.html
)

-- Create a programmatic skin that draws the artwork at runtime using
ActionScript based on the styles you set on the component.

Thanks,

nj

[flexcoders] Re: unable to load wsdl?? flex, you're pissing me off...

2006-11-01 Thread Jason
Can anyone out there can confirm that the example here:
http://blog.wrench.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Flex/converter2/Converter.html
actually works in Firefox (I'm using 1.5.0.7 and the 9.0.16.0 debug
version of the flash player) ???

This has been unresolved for over two months now... and would love
some more community feedback.

The example works in IE, and not firefox - so much for cross browser
compatible flash!

[flexcoders] local SWF files cannot use the LoaderContext.securityDomain property

2006-11-01 Thread twgonzalez01
Use Case:
Debugging Flex app locally which uses the SWFLoader to load child
applications that reside on a remote server (in our data center).

Need to allow both the parent app (running locally in debug) and the
child app (resides on remote server) to play nicely together.

Expected Result: I can have both apps (parent & child) share the same
ApplicationDomain and SecurityDomain.

What Happens: I get the error message "local SWF files cannot use the
LoaderContext.securityDomain property" when trying to set the
LoaderContext.securityDomain of the SWFLoader object. If I omit this
setting the SWFLoader then barfs when it trys to load the remote resource.

I have both parent and child applications using
Security.allowDomain(["*"]); and I also have a cross-domain policy
file on the remote server to allow ALL domains access.

Anyone have any suggestions?

[flexcoders] Is it possible to setup polling amf over HTTPS?

2006-11-01 Thread Steven Toth
I'm using a SecureAMFChannel for Remoting, but also need to use a
DataService. I have a RTMPChannel that I'm going to switch over to
SecureRTMPChannel, but have some users behind proxies. I want to
setup a polling amf channel over HTTPS as a secondary channel. I
haven't been able to find any documentation on whather it can be done,
and if so, hwo to do it? I know the polling amf over HTTP uses the
AMFChannel with the amfpolling endpoint. What's the channel type and
endpoint for a HTTPS polling amf channel??? Thanks.

[flexcoders] ATTN: Adobe Re: Does FDS project have to compile on the server?

2006-11-01 Thread Steven Toth
Here is the command line for the compiler (taken from FlexBuilder):

-services "C:\dev\flex\fds2\jrun4\servers\default\flex\WEB-
INF\flex\services-config.xml" -locale en_US  -context-root=/flex

Here's the channel definition:

20
100K
100K

The local URL is:

http://127.0.0.1:8700/flex/MyApp/MyApp.html

When I hardcode the server name it works (although intermittenly).

Yes, the logging is set up to monitor the traffic. However, when I
was getting the error, it was showing up on the client indicating
the RTMP connection cold not be established, not on the server. As
I mentioned, hardcoding the server name somewhat corrects the
issue.  Thanks.

specified at compile time either in the manner Dirk describes, or in
the flex-config.xml file under the settings as a entry.

  Flex tried to connect

[flexcoders] Secondary DataProvider for Custom Component - Best Approach

2006-11-01 Thread iko_knyphausen

I am working on a custom DataGridColumn which has a secondary dataProvider to feed a dropdown combobox. The DataGridColumn has the combobox as itemEditor and a label as itemRenderer. The reason for the itemRenderer is that I want to distinguish between Labels and Values. For example, the data in the grid may contain "true" or "false", but the display could be "Enabled" and "Disabled", or something localized. Same for the Combo...
The challenge I am having is the format of the secondary dataProvider. Right now I am using a general Object to pass the second dataProvider. It becomes the dataProvider (via binding) of the dropDown combo which is used as itemEditor. This works well, and upon creationComplete, I select the current grid value in the combobox. The code below is part of the itemEditor...
private function selectThis():void{ var index:int = -1;  for(var i:int=0;i {  if(this.dataProvider[i][outerDocument.returnField].toString() == this.data [outerDocument.dataField].toString())   {   index = i;   break;  } } this.selectedIndex = (index == -1) ? 0 : index;}
Now, for the itemRenderer I want to use the same dataProvider (passed to the DataGridColumn and passed thru to the combo control) so that I can 'translate' the data values into a display labels. The itemRenderer is a label control which does not have a dataProvider property on its own. I can still access the dataProvider passed to the DataGridColumn, however, because of the general Object type, the length property is not accessible. Ok, so then I went ahead and converted the incoming Object into an XMLListCollection, and this all works nicely, but it requires I know the incoming object type of the dataProvider, which is what I would like to avoid...
It seems that for list based controls like the combo or grid controls you can pass pretty much any type of dataprovider and it will automatically convert it to some kind of collection (xml or array). I would like to do the same with the incoming object to feed controls that have no built-in dataProvider property.
Is there a generic dataProvider object I could use (one that accepts any type of incoming data), or if not, what would be the best way to do a manual conversion to, say XMLListCollection no matter what the input is?
Hopefully someone has done this before and can provide some ideas... Thanks very much.

RE: [flexcoders] XML charting troubles

2006-11-01 Thread Tracy Spratt

I advise setting resultFormat=”e4x”,
doing away with binding into the mx:Model, and instead using a result handler handler
to assign the result directly to an instance/global XML variable.

This way, you can trace the contents of
event.result.toXMLString(), and see exactly what you have in Flex.

Mx:Model converts the xml into a nested
mx:Object structure. Dumping its content is harder than toXMLString().

If you need a collection for a list-based
control dataProvider, use an e4x selection _expression_ to return an XMLList, and
wrap that in an XMLListCollection.

All, I'm a Flex Newbie - coming from the Java world
(nice to not have
to use JSP's any more!).. I'm having a problem with of a basic XML to

The XML output from my server looks like this:

10-25-2006 12:0012.110

The MXML looks like this:

When I run the MXML, it complains about a missing element lag...

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Tree not updating with correct XML

2006-11-01 Thread Tracy Spratt

I advise setting resultFormat=”e4x”
and using result and fault handlers, instead of binding directly to
lastResult. That way is easier to debug.

I have an example on CFLEX that uses
HTTPService, aspx or jsp to retrieve and save an xml file.

You pretty much answered my question when you stated
that the XML
tag gets set during compiled time. I was thinking I might have to
use an HTTPService tag since the XML.aspx file will have different
results depending on the time of day per user. Bummer we can't just
reset the XML tag. Thanks for the prompt reply. Off to go learn
how to send in data to a tree via HTTPService.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Linear Gradient with AreaChart bug?

2006-11-01 Thread Ely Greenfield

You could write a custom area renderer to do it. If you
look at the code for the default area renderer, you'll see that it's computing
the bounding box of the values of the series, and using that as the rectangle
for the IFill.begin() call. I believe area renderers are actually sized to
fill the entire data area of the chart, so if instead you passed
Rectangle(0,0,unscaledWidth,unscaledHeight) as the rectangle for the
IFill.begin() call, you should get the effect you want.

I Went to create a test case (as the source code is part of a muchlarger

is only creating a Matrixtransformation between the Min and Max values
within that Series, notthe min/max for the overal Y Axis. So if there is a
small deltabetween the min/max within the series, but the overall values are
highup on the Y axis you only have a very small area that the

RE: [flexcoders] FDS-Hibernate Error: Error instantiating ... 'flex.data.assemblers.HibernateAssembler'

2006-11-01 Thread Jeff Vroom

Do you have the JOTM configured as part of
tomcat? FDMS requires a JTA based transaction manager. See the Tomcat
install instructions on this page:

http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/flex/2/install.html

It looks like there is an exception occurring
when the hibernate assembler is being initialized. One possibility is that JOTM
is missing, but it could be also be a hibernate specific problem . Are you
getting any other stack traces logged? That stack trace is a chained exception…
the “root cause” is what we need to more fully diagnose this case. I
checked on jrun and I am getting all of the exceptions logged but this could be
dependent on some jrun specific code logs all of the stack traces when a
servlet throws an exception during startup.

We do ship the source to the hibernate
assembler so if necessary you could use that to help debug the problem.

Jeff

[flexcoders] Re: DataGrid.selectedItem assignment sometimes does nothing

More miscellaneous info: After this code runs, grid.selectedItems IS set. It's a Array of length 1 with (surprise) the appropriate data element in it. But grid.selectedItem is still null.

grid.SelectedItemIndex is set properly. But grid.selectedItem always equals null. I've tried tracing through the DataGrid code for this but it's fairly complex.Any idea on why this doesn't work?

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Structuring a collection of Flex apps in a tomcat webapps folder

2006-11-01 Thread hank williams
On further investigation, our initial understanding was correct and
the WEB-INF folder must be inside the application directory. I thought
things worked because tomcat will point to the app, but the FDS remote
access does not work.

So I guess the simple question is this. Do all FDS applications
require a sub folder to be specified? In other words must all FDS apps
be www.somedomain.com/flexapp ?

I dont see how you avoid this since servlet containers require that
the WEB-INF folder be in the root directory of the application, but
this is not how flex structures things. With Flex/FDS there is the
your webapp directory which is inside webapps, and then a sub
directory, for the flex application.

How do you get FDS apps to use a simple url?

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Date Bug?

2006-11-01 Thread Battershall, Jeff
Doug,

I did think of that - but the date issue was demonstrated at 11:00 AM
PST/1:00 DST. I'm thinking that this behavior could be replicated pretty
easily - we worked around it by passing simple strings as I said.

I'm doubtful this is a bug because of the fact that you are dealing
with two timezones. The Date class converts times to client-local
values based on the OS's timezone setting, so if the time in
question is between 12:00 and 2:59 AM Eastern you will see a date of
one day earlier when viewed in Pacific timezone. You can do some
testing with date.toUTCString() to make sure dates/times are the
same no matter what the client timezone is.

Something weird I just noticed. Even though grid.selectedItem gets changed to null, the selection DOES change to the new item. It's very strange.On 11/1/06,

RE: [flexcoders] What's the best place to report Flex framework bugs?

2006-11-01 Thread Joan Lafferty

I’m glad you asked. The best place
is to file bugs or enhancement requests is through the Adobe support site at:

http://www.adobe.com/support/flex/

Close to the bottom, there is a link to “Feature
requests” under the ‘Feedback’ heading. This will lead you to
a form for bugs and feature requests. These requests get distributed within our
qa team and logged as bugs internally. I would say this is the best way to get
a request in.

Thanks,

Joan

Hi,

I have several bug requests and 2 patches for Flex framework. What's the
best place to this? Is it Adobe's general bug request form?

[flexcoders] Re: Linear Gradient with AreaChart bug?

2006-11-01 Thread twgonzalez01
I Went to create a test case (as the source code is part of a much
larger app) and realized what is happening.

In an area chart the linearGradient is only creating a Matrix
transformation between the Min and Max values within that Series, not
the min/max for the overal Y Axis. So if there is a small delta
between the min/max within the series, but the overall values are high
up on the Y axis you only have a very small area that the gradient
gets applied to.

Is there any way around this?

Re: [flexcoders] Anyone have any problems using "Clean..." in FlexBuilder 2 Mac Beta?

2006-11-01 Thread Greg Newman

I had a similar problem yesterday adding a class path to the project (mac beta). It kept telling me that the project file was not in the src directory. I ended up creating a new project and dropping the files into the new project, restarting flex builder and that took care of the problem.
On 11/1/06, DJ Lift <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I just tried to "Clean..." my project, and now I can't build any more because it says that the

I've even tried to create new projects and i get the same issue. I'm going to reinstall flex
builder to see if I still get the same issue.

[flexcoders] setting my application pageTitle

2006-11-01 Thread hank williams
I am setting my applications pageTitle parameter in my
tag. Nevertheless, the page title displays as the
name of the apps main .mxml file (which is named index.mxml so that I
dont have to list the actual app name in my url).

Thinking that it might be a cache issue, I have restart tomcat, I have
cleared my browser cache, etc. But I cant get the proper page title to
stick. Any ideas?

[flexcoders] Anyone have any problems using "Clean..." in FlexBuilder 2 Mac Beta?

2006-11-01 Thread DJ Lift
I just tried to "Clean..." my project, and now I can't build any more because
it says that the
bin/.html file is missing. In fact, there is nothing in the bin
directory any
more.

I've even tried to create new projects and i get the same issue. I'm going to
reinstall flex
builder to see if I still get the same issue.

Thanks,
mark

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Structuring a collection of Flex apps in a tomcat webapps folder

2006-11-01 Thread hank williams
Thanks. But I did figure it out. I just needed to configure a new host
in my server.xml file with an appBase parameter that points to the
necessary directory.

The concern that my admin had was that he believed that the directory
pointed to by appBase had to have a WEB-INF directory. This does make
sense, but it appears not to be the case. The WEB-INF folder may
indeed be one level up as it is in the case of where the flex app is
vs the root of the webapp. Honestly, I'm not sure why we are able to
get away with this, but it does work.

RE: [flexcoders] Is this bad coding practice in ActionScript?

2006-11-01 Thread Gordon Smith
> I guess the compiler has a good reason for moaning otherwise.

It does. The warning is intended to make developers aware that AS
doesn't has function-scoped, not block-scoped. variables. When you
declare a var anywhere inside a function, it's scope is the entire
function, not just the { ... } block it's in. So multiple declarations
are redundant; they don't declare separate vars with their own initial
values. For example, if you write this code inside a function

if (condition)
{
var i:int;
...
i = 3;
...
}
else
{
var i:int;
trace(i);
}

it should trace out 3, not 0. You may not like this feature of AS (I
don't) but it's required for ECMAScript compatibility.

I don't believe this is an Apollo goal. If we do graphics hardware

[flexcoders] Re: Date Bug?

2006-11-01 Thread Doug Lowder
I'm doubtful this is a bug because of the fact that you are dealing
with two timezones. The Date class converts times to client-local
values based on the OS's timezone setting, so if the time in
question is between 12:00 and 2:59 AM Eastern you will see a date of
one day earlier when viewed in Pacific timezone. You can do some
testing with date.toUTCString() to make sure dates/times are the
same no matter what the client timezone is.

[flexcoders] Re: Structuring a collection of Flex apps in a tomcat webapps folder

2006-11-01 Thread Doug Lowder
Sounds like this is beyond the scope of Tomcat configuration, since
the hostname will be resolved by DNS at the client regardless of
what webserver is actually running on that host.

Assuming you have DNS issues already worked out though, you could
easily just redirect to the desired url by using some JavaScript in
a default HTML page on your host. Something like:

  var loc = window.location.toString();
  if (loc.indexOf("www.somedomain.com") != -1)
  window.location = "http://www.somedomain.com/flexapp1";;
  else if (loc.indexOf("ww2.somedomain.com") != -1)
  window.location = "http://www.somedomain.com/flexapp2";;
  else if (loc.indexOf("ww3.somedomain.com") != -1)
  window.location = "http://www.somedomain.com/flexapp3";;

You'll have other issues even with this approach, though; domain
names might be entered by the user in mixed case, or the IP address
might be used instead of the hostname, and probably many others.

[flexcoders] Date Bug?

2006-11-01 Thread Battershall, Jeff
Some interesting behavior turned up by populating a combox box with some
dates pulled from a CFQUERY-driven dataprovider and passing the selected
date back via post to a CF page. Certain users would consistently get
the date back one day earlier than was intended. Has anyone seen
anything like this? I'm on the East Coast and the user in question was
on the West Coast if that matters (and I don't think it should).

What I've had to do is 'dumb it down' by passing a simple string
ddmm and then parsing it on the CF side of things after the post
operation - something about date handling within Player 9 seems a little
quirky. In other words I eliminated all date parsing from remote object
back to Flex and Flex back to CF.

Note that the user had the same exact behavior on IE or Firefox. Any
insight appreciated!

[flexcoders] Linear Gradient with AreaChart bug?

2006-11-01 Thread twgonzalez01
I am trying to create an area chart and use a LinearGradient at 90
degrees (top-bottom) fill for the areaFill.

The problem is that the matrix transformation appears to not be taking
into account the full range of Y values, and all transitions are
occuring in the very top of the chart. Maybe I am misunderstanding
something?

Here is sample code for a fill:

RE: [flexcoders] Linechart with dynamic series?

2006-11-01 Thread Samuel R. Neff

The
series property is a plain array so LineChart won't detect changes to it
directly. You need to force series invalidation by assigning the series
array itself.  Here's an example:

xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
layout="absolute" creationComplete="addMoreSeries();">

flexcoders@yahoogroups.comSubject: [flexcoders] Linechart with
dynamic series?
I was wondering if it is possible to dynamically add LineSeries to a
LineChart component at run-time?I'd like to create something like a stock
chart where the user can select multiple stocks to display on the stock chart.
How would I format the arrayCollection being used as a dataProvider for
the LineChart? My initial guess would be something like this, except it would be
coming from a web service:private var stocksAC:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection( [
{ Date: "2006-10-25", Stock1: 2000, Stock2: 150, Stock3: 450 },{ Date: "2006-10-26", Stock1: 1000, Stock2: 200, Stock3: 600 },{ Date: "2006-10-27", Stock1: 1500, Stock2: 500, Stock3: 300 },
{ Date: "2006-10-28", Stock1: 1800, Stock2: 120, Stock3: 900 },{ Date: "2006-10-29", Stock1: 2400, Stock2: 575, Stock3: 500 } ]);]]>One
issue I am having is how to dynamically add properties to the objects in the
stocksAC arrayCollection. What do I do if I want to add a forth stock or fifth
stock at runtime? Another issue is how to add LineSeries at runtime?

Again,
how do I add a forth or fifth stock at runtime? I hope this is clear
enough.Cheers,BB

[flexcoders] Re: Tree not updating with correct XML

2006-11-01 Thread meathead
You pretty much answered my question when you stated that the XML
tag gets set during compiled time. I was thinking I might have to
use an HTTPService tag since the XML.aspx file will have different
results depending on the time of day per user. Bummer we can't just
reset the XML tag. Thanks for the prompt reply. Off to go learn
how to send in data to a tree via HTTPService.

You can set styles on the LinkButton to
control its appearance. So in your case, you would add a color (and perhaps an
underline) style to the mx:LinkButton tag.

[flexcoders] Changing color in datagrid URL

2006-11-01 Thread Mike Crowe
Hi folks,

I'm trying to put a clickable URL in a datagrid. So far, here is
what I have for my column:

I want to make the email address blue (#ff). However, nothing I
do seems to change this. Whether I put in DataGridColumn or
LinkButton, neither works.

What am I missing?

TIA
Mike

[flexcoders] Re: Loop with call to Flex Data Services

2006-11-01 Thread jason_williams_mm
Okay, well that is a bit more complex. To simplify the client code
and the number of network round trips, I would suggest building up a
list of the project ids and pass that as an argument to the fill
request. This way you only make one call to the remote destination
and remove the complexity you will require in the client code which
will be exacerbated if you decide to use paging later on.

Doing this on the client might look something like this:

// ...
private var totalTasks:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection();
// ...
taskDataService.addEventListener(DataServiceResultEvent.RESULT,
resultHandler)
var token:AsyncToken = taskDataService.fill(...);
token.collection = tmpArray;
token.isLastFill = i == projectsArray.length;

function resultHandler(event:DataServiceResultEvent):void
{
   var collection:ArrayCollection = ArrayCollection
(event.token.collection);
   if (collection != null)
   {
   var cursor:IViewCursor = collection.createCursor();
   while (!cursor.afterLast)
   {
  totalTasks.addItem(cursor.current);
  cursor.moveNext();
   }

   if (event.token.isLastFill)
   {
   // do something with the final results
   }
   }
}

Hope that helps.

[flexcoders] Structuring a collection of Flex apps in a tomcat webapps folder

2006-11-01 Thread hank williams
I have a three flex applications that live under one FDS web app.

Imagine a directory structure as follows

webapps
mainFDSAppName
flexapp1
flexapp2
flexapp3

I want to be able to say

www.somedomain.com points to flexapp1
ww2.somedomain.com points to flexapp2
ww3.somedomain.com points to flexapp3

My system administrator is telling me that tomcat will not allow an
app to be at a deeper level than at the top of the webapps directory
without additional path information. This means that I could make an
app inside mainFDSAppName be www.somdomain.com but flexapp1 has to be
www.somedomain.com/flexapp1.

I know that the www, ww1 and ww2 require additional CNAMEs. That is
not the issue. The issue is whether I can using some combination of
CNAME and other tomcat configurations to make the nice url's described
above. I also want to do something that will allow me to not do extra
work every time I want to build and/or deploy my app.

RE: [flexcoders] using a linkbar with a viewstack... how can you indicate current selection

2006-11-01 Thread Joan Lafferty

There is no specific style on LinkBar that
you can use. Instead, since the LinkBar is just a parent for a bunch of
LinkButton’s, you can use getChildAt on your LinkBar to control the
styles on the individual LinkButtons.

Here is some code you can use to change
the color of text of your selected item:

private function changeColor() : void {

    var n:int =
mylb.numChildren;

    var lb1:*;

    ta.text = 'hello';

    for(var i:int=0; i <
n; i++)

    {

lb1 = mylb.getChildAt(i);

lb1.setStyle('color', 0x00);

    }

    lb1 =
mylb.getChildAt(mylb.selectedIndex);

    lb1.setStyle('color',
0xFF);

}

Yes

No

  Maybe

a linkbar
is a recommended way to control a viewstack. But I want to
be able to show the user the currently selected view. I am not clear
whether the linkbar is supposed to allow this. When I try to initially
set the selectedIndex to 0 I get an error indicating that it is out of
range.

I know I could use a tabBar, but I like the simple blocks of text
without the "tabby" look and feel.

So I guess my question is, is it possible to use the linkbar where one
item is, for example, a different color than the others, indicating
that that is the currently selected item?

This also lets me paste into a text doc and view/mail the data as html.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: using a linkbar with a viewstack... how can you indicate current selection

2006-11-01 Thread hank williams
I guess the problem is that I am not using the viewStack as the
dataProvider. I am just using an arrayCollection. Ideally I would like
to leave it this way and not actually have to connect my linkBar to my
viewStack. What I want is to press a button which calls a function and
changes the underlying state, which may then change the selected item
by changing the selectedIndex.

Is this possible?

[flexcoders] Using CDATA in XML objects in Flex 2

2006-11-01 Thread landrew65
All,

I am building an app in Flex 2, and I need to send complex XML data from
my Flex client to my server-side application. I need to encapsulate
some of the data in tags, but I cannot use the CDATA tag
inside a Flex script block. To solve this problem, I created a simple
function that adds CDATA tags to the appropriate XML nodes in real time
by using this function:

private function addCDATA(node:String) :String {
return "";
}

Is this the best solution? I'd love to hear ways that other people have
solved it.

[flexcoders] Re: using a linkbar with a viewstack... how can you indicate current selection

2006-11-01 Thread Michael Labriola

Hank,

If you are setting the dataProvider of the linkBar to the viewStack,
the LinkBar will indicate the selectedChild of the viewStack as a
disabled button on the bar.

The linkbar responds to the viewStack. When you say you are setting
the selectedIndex to 0, do you mean you are setting it on the
viewStack and the linkbar is not responding?

As far as the styles, the linkbar has a fair amount of style
customization all defined in the LinkBar help docs.

[flexcoders] Re: Tree not updating with correct XML

2006-11-01 Thread Michael Labriola

Aaron,

Need to clarify something:

When you say : The XML is changes, do you mean that the XML data
retrieved from http://Path/To/XML.aspx changes or that you change the
XMl after loading at the client?

I don't want to answer the wrong question, but the
mx:XML tag includes data at compile time, not runtime. So, the
application is going to grab a copy of this data when it compiles and
build it in.

If you are looking to grab data at runtime, you need to look at
something like an HTTP service tag to go and grab the data on command.

Let me know if this answers your question,

Hank,

What I have done for this is to set the
disabledColor on the linkbar. The selected view’s link is disabled on
the linkbar, and it will be the color you specified for the disabledColor. If you
are looking for something more advanced (I.E. underlined text…), you may
have to subclass the link bar and do some voodoo on the updateDisplayList
method.

a linkbar
is a recommended way to control a viewstack.

RE: [flexcoders] rotation and scrollbar generation in canvas and rotation and drag and drop

2006-11-01 Thread Joan Lafferty

Containers don't know how to account for the rotation of its children
when determining things like clipping and scrollbars. There is a bug in our
bugbase regarding this, but, it got pushed back on because of resources. I will
put another note in the bug that a customer has requested the feature. This
usually gives it more weight for future releases.

As for the other drag and drop issue, we know about this bug and it has
been fixed in our next release of Flex. Sit tight and hopefully, you can get
around this for a short bit. This problem actually occurs on other elements
even when they aren’t rotated.

We are currently working on an advanced Flex 2.0
project. What we
discovered working on it is that the Flex framework has some lacks
regarding rotation of elements.

- For example placing a rotated element in a canvas doesnt generate
the scrollbars as you would expect, but only takes the width and
height starting from the upper left corner to define the size of the
element.

- Another problem is using the implemented drag n drop with rotated
elements. It seems like there is a "non dropping area" created that
resembles the size of the used canvas (or other element) at the top of
the application. While this area is out of screen for unrotated
objects it comes into stage when rotation is applied. For example a
180 degrees rotated object can be invisibly found in the top left
corner of your application. This might be a bug in our application or
a flex feature, lets see...

can anyone recreate these problems? do you already have a solution?
we are working on it...

[flexcoders] Tree not updating with correct XML

2006-11-01 Thread meathead
Hi all,

I'm at a loss here. I've got a tree set up to retrieve XML data.
It works fine until the data in the XML changes. Then the tree
won't reflect the new data until my flex application is recompiled.
I believe when the application is being recomplied it's grabbing the
XML and setting it somehow. Here is some code.

CODE***

http://Path/To/XML.aspx"; id="TreeXML"/>

END OF CODE***
I've also tried the above without the XMLListCollection and just
putting the TreeXML straight into the Tree object dataProvider. The
afterComp function is called in the application createCompletion
event. I've also tried with and without invalidateList.

Basically, How can I get the Tree control to grab the latest and
greatest from the XML?

Thanks,
Aaron

2006-11-01 Thread Evan Gifford

Exactly, that’s my concern.

We’ll  be using the Sandy
3D API (http://www.flashsandy.org/ ) in Apollo, but without true 3D support. (Example:
Animated 3D kitten with texture mapping and camera control http://www.flashsandy.org/sources/1_1/demos/kitty/)
which is not a bad thing, but is suffering from lack of hardware support to
achieve high frame rates with complex models and textures.

BTW, In my opinion this is a worthy cause
and should inspire the support of the community with what they have been able
to achieve within flashplayer already.

There is also papervision which has gone
opensource recently. (http://blog.noventaynueve.com/2006/10/08/if-you-love-something/)

(Example: Static, texture-mapped Rhino
with camera control http://www.noventaynueve.com/lab/rhino/)

These are both exciting but lack the hardware
support required to get over about 15FPS on decent hardware.

(Dual Core P4 3.0 w/2GB Ram and ATI900)

This is where Apollo could really come in for
true 3D support :^)

I don't know why you would be confident of this at all. It has not
been listed as part of any Apollo API, and, according to the FAQ, they
are still deciding whether there will be a way to extend the platform
with native code. In fact, it seems unlikely to me given their strong
desire for write once run anywhere. But in any case, there is, as far
as I can tell, no reason for condience in 3D access.

[flexcoders] Re: Loop with call to Flex Data Services

2006-11-01 Thread jason_williams_mm
Each fill operation is asynchronous and so are the calls to Alert.show
(). This means that code doesn't stop when these lines of code are
executed it continues to run the very next line.

With the fill operation you will not get a valid length until the
server responds to the request, however, during that time you will
continue to execute more fill requests until all projects within the
projectsArray have been iterated.

It is not clear what you are after here, if you want to display the
length of the filled collection after the server has responded then
you could do something like the following:

tmpArray.addEventListener(CollectionEvent.COLLECTION_CHANGE,
collectionChangeHandler);
taskDataService.fill(...);

function collectionChangeHandler(event:CollectionEvent):void
{
   if (event.kind == CollectionEventKind.RESET)
   {
  // display the length using the event.target.length
   }
}

The RESET kind is only dispatched when the collection has been
initially filled when managed by DataService.

There are more sophisticated approaches to this problem as well like
using a responder with the AsyncToken returned from the fill()
method, but, it is unclear if you are only after debugging
information or not. If you really only want debugg information then
use the in your application MXML and a debug
player then inspect the flashlog.txt or the console when using
FlexBuilder in debug mode.

RE: [flexcoders] When the assembler classes are instantiated and destroyed?

2006-11-01 Thread Cathy Reilly

> So my
questions are: the assembler class is instantiated when theweb-app is loaded
in server? Or when the client opens the application inhis browser? Or when
the client tries to call a method from theassembler (e.g. fill)? And when
it's destroyed? After method returns? Orit will remain until the web-app is
loaded??

The create/destroy on the Assembler is related to the
'scope' property in the destination. The default scope is
request-level.

With request
scope, a new Assembler is created on each request.
With session scope, a new
Assembler is created for each new session.
With application scope, a new Assembler is created when
the MessageBrokerServlet starts up at application startup.

There is no explicit
destroy method for the Assembler.

Hi,I'm creating an application that uses Flex Data Management
andeverything is working fine. I want to add something like a listener
init that will push external changes in the underlying database to
theclients. In my searches I found some information
aboutDataServiceTransaction API and believe it's my solution, but I
think theassembler class must exist during the entire application
life.So my questions are: the assembler class is instantiated when
theweb-app is loaded in server? Or when the client opens the application
inhis browser? Or when the client tries to call a method from
theassembler (e.g. fill)? And when it's destroyed? After method returns?
Orit will remain until the web-app is loaded??

[flexcoders] Re: three and a half FlexBuilder bugs that drive me buggy

2006-11-01 Thread tobiaspatton
Here are my favorite FlexBuilder bugs.

1. Place the mouse pointer over a class name, or something else that
you can control-click to jump to the definition. Click and hold the
mouse button. Now hit the control key. The definition for the word
under the pointer is immediately opened. This happens to me all the
time when I'm pasting text into place. I'll click to the location I
want to paste into, then hit control-v. If I time it wrong, the
mouse button is still down and when I hit the control key, my editor
window changes.

2. Drag and drop text. This is the 21st century, right? Why can't I
select some text and drag it to a new location. I can do this in
wordpad, why not Eclipse?

RE: [flexcoders] Re: how to explode a wedge on mouse over?

2006-11-01 Thread Ely Greenfield

The way you did it...changing the styles array on the pie
series...is the easiest way. That's where individual wedges get their data
from. You might be able to reach in and muck with internal values in individual
wedges, but that's a risky proposition. Those values aren't
'truth...' Truth is what the series wants the wedges to be, and other
things that invalidate the series (like resizing the chart) would end up blowing
away your change.

An alternative would be to write a custom renderer for the
pie wedges, which has a concept of 'selected.' When a wedge is selected,
it ignores the color being passed in by the series, and draws itself in a
different color. But I think your approach is probably the
easiest.

Ely.

OK, i got it!!i made the chart explode on mouse over a wedge, working
great !next step: on click on a wedge the wedge will change color (or
alphaor ratio), click on another wedge will revert the previous wedge
toits original color and will change color of current wedge.i got the
start of it, but i m stuck!!i used setStyle to change the color but there
must be a better way -like accessing the wedge directly and changing its own
style.HOW ???here is the code:?>http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"initialize="init()">te

You know what I’d love
to see …..

After taking Alex
Uhlmann’s “Creating cinematic experiences .. “ at MAX last week, I have to say
that I am worried that flex will never compete with Windows vista XAML unless
there is some integration with OpenGL, DirectX or something like that to allow
for true 3D Experiences (instead of Sandy, the great but limited 3D API for
AS3)

I realize that one can
create a lot of these effects using Pseudo 3D Distortion maps, etc. but Apollo
puts us on the client with access to the hardware which is not possible with
ActiveX. I believe that even if Sandy gets the support it
needs and performance issues are addressed, we will be stuck in pseudo 3D world
and the experiences we create will fall to the wayside of
XAML.

In the mean time,
Sandy needs all the support it can get from the community
so that we will not be pushed aside by XAML until we can get these true 3D
abilities.

Where is Flash/Flex
3D!!?

In general i could see us being able to

recommended alternative?

Thanks,

RE: [flexcoders] Isn´t there any release of Adobe Apollo yet? Alpha maybe....

2006-11-01 Thread Evan Gifford

You know what I’d love to see …..

After taking Alex Uhlmann’s “Creating
cinematic experiences .. “ at MAX last week, I have to say that I am
worried that flex will never compete with Windows vista XAML unless there is
some integration with OpenGL, DirectX or something like that to allow for true
3D Experiences (instead of Sandy, the great but limited 3D API for AS3)

I realize that one can create a lot of
these effects using Pseudo 3D Distortion maps, etc. but Apollo puts us on the
client with access to the hardware which is not possible with ActiveX. I
believe that even if Sandy
gets the support it needs and performance issues are addressed, we will be
stuck in pseudo 3D world and the experiences we create will fall to the wayside
of XAML.

In the mean time, Sandy needs all the support it can get from
the community so that we will not be pushed aside by XAML until we can get
these true 3D abilities.

Where is Flash/Flex 3D!!?

What features? Quite simple

The power to haxor and destroy all base!!! Hehe

Just kidding ;)

In general i could see us being able to possibly create Apollo
apps that further facilitate the workflow between existing separate desktop
applications, Without getting in to too much detail on this list we would like
to be able to build “web apps” that have a certain amount of
control over desktop or server apps.

I can get in too more detail in private correspondence.

Just wondering, since I'm working on it... what features of Apollo
are people most excited about?

Yep, I
know how you feel. The suspense is brutal. I could have already built and sold
like 8 products built on it.

There are probably too many holes in it still, or at least that's what I keep
telling myself. :o)

[flexcoders] Re: Text editor

2006-11-01 Thread Branko
Thank You Dan

I have figure out some staff.
I'm using repeater component with textArea component to get new
pages and also texthight property was very useful, but however now
I'm facing more difficult problem like choosing dataprovider for
repeat component

It will be perfect if I could use some text source which will spread
trough the textArea components in Repeater section.
I'm not sure if that is possible.And if You have any smarter idea
please send me I'm opened for every suggestion.
