[flexcoders] Re: FDS port in biggest disadvantage in Flex?
I belive there was a post from Adobe asking if anyone wanted to try a new FDS/SDK that would tunnel over port 80. You could then use a reverse web proxy to send the requests to the correct back end. Tunneling FDS over port 80 would be nice, any idea where to look? What do you mean with reverse web proxy.. if you have 3 webapplications in 1 webcontainer on 1 server, then those 3 backends need 3 different ports to start FDS on, otherwise Flex will fail to load. (bindexception port already in use)

[flexcoders] Re: CF/Flex OOP Question - based on Matt Boles' Tutorial
Of course, I'm moving on now. My solution as of now has been to do a bit of both. I'm passing the all of needed objects (four of them) through a custom event, and then building them as necessary in the view. I'm still not quite sure if this is correct or not. My example differs quite a bit from flexGrocer, so its a bit tought to compare. Sorry for the length. - Chris --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, qnotemedia [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all, I've developed a number of Flex projects in the past few months, but as I started to make bigger ones, I've run into a lot of problems. I went back through a hands-on tutorial I had taken that was hosted by Matt Boles at MAX, and I think its time to move up to the advanced table. But there's something fundamental I'm still missing. Some background first - Matt basically ended the tutorial with showing us how to send a custom event up from a component to the main application, and passed to another component. It wasn't until I put this in my own application that I finally understood the point behind needing to create loosely-coupled components. I just did a google, and strangely enough, the PDF for this hands-on is found here: http://www.ammug.org/drupal/system/files/Building+a+Rich+Internet+Appl ication+with+Flex+2+and+ColdFusion.pdf The example he gave was a rather simple one. Make your CFC using the Flex wizard, and base your custom event off sending the wizard's object - i.e. in reality, only a single table's fields, because in the wizard, that's all you can create! But typically, us developers need much more than that in order to view our data. On to my question... Lets say I have a contact list - this would require names (names tables) and a list of departments (dpts table), likely something like: where names.dptID = departments.dptID. Using Matt's tutorial, I would create my CFCs by running the wizard on the Names table, make a list all names component and a view selected name component. I would create a custom event object that would dispatch the name object, i.e. the selected name and fields from the names table - to the view selected component, which would display the detailed data. But what about the non-name tables that are directly related, like my list of departments (again: where name.dptID = departments.dptID)? My question is, since ALL names will have ONE department, should this SQL join be formed by editing the name object CFCs, and the name object then includes things like Department Name and Department Description every time its used - OR, should I have a completely separate department object that is dispatched additionaly when the selected name object is dispatched, which is in essence, forming the join inside Flex? Considering that at some point the departments will be a separately edited item, with their own add/remove/edit, I'm assuming the latter? And IF that's the case, what would the dispatch function look like on page 76 of the tutorial? A long question - but typing it out helps me understand it, and I need to get over this small bump in order to move on. Thanks for reading ;)

Having the flash player consume a big blog of XML and then you do what you want with it (like turn it in to AS XML Objects and use it for a grid's dataprovider, etc) is WAY faster than letting flex try to deserialize it all and put it all into memory as strongly typed objects. One perf test we did in 1.5 was to return three hundred items as nested, strongly typed objects took about 45 seconds for the FP to handle the result set and render. When using straight xml, it took about 2 seconds. Of course it all depends on how large your result set as well as how deep and nested your objects are. As coming from java land the java compiler won't tolerate this error if it is an error. When I get the target from the event it's not even a UIComponent, it's as been said an Object type. Anyway I'm still learning Flex. Java Swing id too slow, but I must say it wasn't a wast of time. It is a very elegant architecture but the problem is too slow. All the concept reading the Develp. The setStyle() method is defined on UIComponent, a subclass of DisplayObject. Therefore, you must cast currentTarget to UIComponent before calling the setStyle() method for example: mx:Script ![CDATA[ import mx.core.UIComponent; private function myEventHandler(e:Event):void { UIComponent(e.currentTarget).setStyle(color, red); } ]] /mx:Script and e.currentTarget is of type Button. But Button extends UIComponent, so we don't have to upcast the reference because setStyle method is public and is available to Button object reference0. I tried the code without upcasting and it works. Is the writer wrong or Am I missing something on the concept. Thanks Jairo __ Food fight? Enjoy some healthy debate in the Yahoo! RE: [flexcoders] JEE5 web application glassfish EJB Hibernate....how use it by fds and flex?
ActionScript (like javascript) is an asynchronous programming language so each RPC call you make does not block while the code fetches the results. Because of this, pretty much every asynchronous call does not return the result directly... instead it returns a token which you can use to register a callback function which gets the result. So this line of your code below isn't going to return a Year - it returns an AsyncToken. year = Year(ro.retrieveYear(1)); With that token you can register a callback function that is given the year. The other thing Java programmers get tripped up by is the fact that the flash player will not actually initiate any RPC ops until your current code completes. Thus it is safe to assign to the returned token after the call is made as long as you do so before the current frame completes. RE: [flexcoders] FDS port in biggest disadvantage in Flex?
I have a couple of comments on this. First off, there is nothing to say you can't run RTMP on port 80 so if it is just a port number issue, you can get around that problem. Of course most servers will need to be listening for both RTMP and HTTP traffic so that would require more than one IP address to allow both to listen to port 80 at the same time. I think that some folks have constraints so that they need to be running their app server behind the firewall so it is not directly exposed to clients. In many J2EE architectures, the web server sits on the DMZ and serves up static files and proxies dynamic requests to the app server tier. We do not yet have a multi-tier solution for RTMP but this is something we're looking at. As Tom mentions, we are working on support for RTMPT - the HTTP based tunneling version of the RTMP protocol. This uses the same actual server socket as RTMP but wraps RTMP traffic in HTTP requests. We detect which protocol is being used by looking at the first few bytes the client writes. You could theoretically proxy these requests using an HTTP based proxy server to keep the RTMP server behind the DMZ. RTMPT does require polling the server though so this is not as scalable as using plain old RTMP. We implemented it primarily so that clients can get real time data delivery even when their only internet connectivity is through an HTTP proxy server. Re: [flexcoders] crossdomain? image dragging
I'd imagine its throwing a SecurityError that the DragManager is handling on your behalf. When you begin the drag, you are probably creating a proxy image to use for dragging. Since the image was loaded from a different domain (that probably doesn't have a crossdomain.xml policy) you can only have the player display the image, you can't read from it or copy it. As a result, it can't create the proxy image. Now, how you fix that... I'm not sure. I personally think Flash Player should have identical security policies to the browser when it comes to image formats, etc., i.e. if the browser allows me to load an image (through a standard http request) I should be able to do anything I want with the image data. Sorry didn't mean to slash Adobe or FlexBuilder. I was extremely frustrated atm :-). We do really enjoy AS3 and the Flex API. This project is a Google Code hosted project, released under the MIT license. I've been working with Darron Schall, Mike Chambers and Ted Patrick to get the project up and running. We're hoping to build a concentrated community effort for custom Flex component development. Have you been looking for a community project to contribute to? Do you have custom components you've been releasing on your blog? Want to brainstorm about new and improved components? The project currently contains a handful of components that have been developed by me or Darron (including some new ones I haven't blogged about yet). We want to get the Flex developer community involved and have a central resource that will help us all build off each other's work. To get involved take a look at the project page on google code (link below) and read the HowToContribute wiki page. For more information read through the project website, join the discussion group, and email me if you have more questions. [flexcoders] Flex Builder Design mode problem
I'm coding a test app to learn Flex and I'm running into a custom component problem. If I make a custom component and save it in a swc file and then import it into the main app, the design mode should show the component. This works sometimes, but sometimes I get a 'Design Mode: Error creating item LoginPanel in parent Canvas'. It seems that if I add a RemoteObject to the custom component then this error appears, but if I remove the RemoteObject then it works ok. I'm assuming that the Flex Builder is having a problem rendering the custom component because of the RemoteObject. Does anyone know a way around this problem? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks Andrew Prime
Re: [flexcoders] Finding out when an arraycollection in my model is set
Even though you have a solution to your problem, I would strongly suggest looking at how the listBase sets its dataProvider. After it has gone through the process of setting its protected collection property, it creates a new CollectionEvent with the kind set to CollectionEventKind.RESET. It then passes the event to its internal collectionChange_eventHandler method and also dispatches it as well. So if all the other suggestions above don't seem to work, then maybe this can provide some insight. Hope that helps someone. But when I deployed a new version on the server recently, the running speed is much slower than before. For this version, there are some changes on my local developing. 1. I updated Flex builder from 2 to 2.0.1 2. I adopted caringorm 2.1 framework into the Flex project. 3. I updated tomcat server from 5.5.17 to 5.5.20. I'm also using MySQL 5.0 database. And when I do development and testing, all these are installed in my local machine. The following is the basic setting for the remote server: - Ubuntu Linux running on VMWare server. - Tomcat 5.5.17 (didn't update to 5.5.20) And also there is a change on the server. MySQL database was on the same machine under VMWare server, but now we moved it to another windows 2003 server. The reason we did this is try to improve the running performance. But we didn't know whether this could be the reason for decreasing the running speed. Does anyone have any idea? Please help. Sally

[flexcoders] Two ArrayCollections, one source array: should changing one affect the other?
In my tests, changing an element of one AC definitely does affect the other (which is what I hoped), but looking at the documentation I can't tell if that should be the case. From the docs: The ArrayCollection object does not represent any changes that you make directly to the source array. Always use the ICollectionView or IList methods to modify the collection. I am using the ICollectionView methods, but only on one of the ArrayCollections, and the only way the second ArrayCollection is being affected is that its source array is being modified. If you run this simple example, you'll see that arr, ac1 and ac2 are all updated with the new value: arr = new Array({fn: David, ln: Bowie}, {fn: Jimi, ln: Hendrix}); ac1 = new ArrayCollection(arr); ac2 = new ArrayCollection(arr); ac2.getItemAt(1).fn = Bozo; If anyone can provide any clarification it would be greatly appreciated. Re: [flexcoders] Re: how do you call the super's super?
Though this will probably cause some gasps and 'shame on you' responses from the OOP hardcores, you might try copying the parent class from the SDK, make it local to your class structure, and then modifying it as your new class, basically porting over your new features into the parent class. That way then you can have access to the grandparent class's methods, you retain the parents methods, and you can override whatever you wish. I had a similar issue, and believe it or not, this was recommended to me by an Adobe support person. Of course my issue was a very minor. It dealt with the fact that alot of their methods were tagged as private rather than protected, leaving alot of headaches for those wanted to extend their controls. [flexcoders] Re: Two ArrayCollections, one source array: should changing one affect the other
I guess the behavior is consistent with the docs after all. In my test I was just tracing out the collections after the update, which makes sense that it would be shown. Moving back into my application, I discovered that to see the updated value(s) in a DataGrid bound to the second collection you need to call itemUpdated() on it, which is consistent with the docs. So my apologies, nothing to see here, move along... :) --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, ben.clinkinbeard [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In my tests, changing an element of one AC definitely does affect the other (which is what I hoped), but looking at the documentation I can't tell if that should be the case.
I've often run into wanting to call grandParent.super() instead of parent.super(), even when parent.super() will do a call to grandParent.super() anyway. The reason for this is to override parent.super while preserving the functionality of grandParent.super. For example, if you're overriding updateDisplayList or createChildren, you've got to call super.updateDisplayList or super.createChildren, but maybe I want to override (and by that I mean NOT run the code in) parent.updateDisplayList(which seems to make since seeing as I am using the word 'override'...). But if I override updateDisplayList, then at some point in my method I've got to call super.updateDisplayList to get anything to work. But that means I'm going to run all the code in super.updateDisplayList, when in reality I just want to run the code in grandParent.updateDisplayList. So just my two cents, I think there are very good reasons to want to make a call straight to grandParent.super(). I've wanted to do it a few times myself and I don't think it should just be chalked up to no, that's bad OOP. Doug On 3/1/07, Paul DeCoursey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Why? [flexcoders] Re: Storing / retrieving rich text
What I have done in the past is store my HTML text as valid XHTML (which is really XML) and send that via remoting. When I retrieve this from the server, I place the text in an TextArea and set condenseWhite=true, this takes care of the white spaces. I then have buttons to spawn the RTE control and pass along the condensed text. Another trick is to have a hidden regular text box, use that to store the XHTML text with no whites space and have another box to display the HTML value of the first box: // display text mx:TextArea htmlText={hintCode.text} editable=false top=37 left=10 right=10 condenseWhite=true bottom=10/ //hidden text field mx:TextArea visible=false x=10 y=210 width=576 id=hintCode condenseWhite=true height=17/ Pass the hintCode.text value to the RTE.htmlText value. [flexcoders] DB access in Apollo
I noticed a while back that there wasn't any kind of local database access in Apollos feature list. Is this something that will/has changed, or are the devs thinking this will be a community contribution? It seems to me that DB access is a big part of desktop apps, I have built a couple using Flash, Zinc, and MySQL. It would be a shame to not be able to use Apollo for some projects because of this issue. Hopefully someone can tell me that I just missed it when Adobe added this to the feature list. Russ

Raz, There's a built in mechanism to prevent this problem in circular bindings. Re: [flexcoders] Apollo Book: Apollo for Adobe Flex Developers Pocket Guide
Just taking a quick look and this concerns me: Apollo provides a file I/O API that lets applications read and write files and directories on the user’s computer... The Flex framework for Apollo includes components for working with files and directories, but these are graphical components for navigating the file system and selecting files and directories. They do not pro- vide direct access to the more fundamental file I/O operations Apollo will eventually provide a complete security model for managing access to local resources, such as the file system... So am I to take this that Apollo will not let me deal with a remote filesystem? If I cannot read/write files from a workstation to a server, or deal with a remote data connection, Apollo suddenly seems really useless for my app :( Yahoo! Re: [flexcoders] Re: Announcing FlexLib - open source flex component library
In my mind, the main reason to shoot for pure AS3 is for consistency. You can accomplish everything in AS3 that you can do in MXML. I know sometimes it's easier to hack together something quickly by using a combination of MXML with AS3 script blocks, but the exact same component can be built with pure AS3 only. One goal of FlexLib is to have some level of consistent coding standards. The easiest standard that I can think of is to shoot for the level of quality of the Flex SDK framework classes themselves. That means solid AS3 classes with well-documented code. One reason the Flex SDK is so useful for learning from and figuring out is that all the code follows the same coding guidelines. Now, that said, we're not going to exclude good components if they use MXML. The AS3 versus MXML distinction is supposed to be more of a guideline. If you've got something you want to contribute and it's MXML classes, we can roll that into FlexLib. We may try to convert MXML stuff to pure AS3, hopefully project members will step up and help each other out when it comes to this. But if it makes the most sense for the component to remain in MXML then it will stay in MXML. So that's just my personal opinion, I'm sure Darron has his own reasons for preferring AS3-only classes. It seems not to be an optimal solution, do you have any solution ? For a cross-browser solution that you can immediately deploy today, you'll need to round-trip them to your server since there isn't a out-of-the-box solution for saving arbitrary bytes from within the player to their local filesystem. However, the soon-to-be-released Apollo is slated to support local filesystem access, so if you can wait for that and can deploy your application as a desktop application, that might suit you. Alternatively, for those browsers that support the data URI, you could use Javascript as a bridge and pass the bytes to your JPEG over to it in Base64-encoded format, and then create a data URI link from which the user can download the file off of the HTML page. Before you get overly excited about going down this route though, keep in mind that data URIs aren't supported by Internet Explorer, among other browsers. Re: [flexcoders] Re: Announcing FlexLib - open source flex component library
Wait, are you saying that making the components in MXML is the only way to use the components in the Design View? I haven't confirmd it, but I find that highly suspect... AS3 == MXML, i.e. MXML becomes AS3 code before its actually compiled. All of the Flex native components are AS3... Making them in MXML doesn't add them to the component list. I believe (and I may be wrong) that FB puts anything that inherits from UIComponent in the list of Custom Components for the Design View (or at least, it should if it doesn't already). Troy. [flexcoders] Reloading search results in list control with custom itemrenderer.
I'm struggling with a list control that uses a custom itemrenderer. It is used to display search results. The first search works fine, but subsequent searches don't re-draw the child controls based on the list control's new dataProvider (an ArrayCollection). For example, search A has three results and search B has four. Search A's results will simply be appended with the fourth result from search B, rather than re-drawing the entire search result. Following is the list control code: mx:List id=lUserArtists height=0 x=0 visible={userArtists.length0} variableRowHeight=true width=100% itemRenderer=pa.components.ontour.event.Default dataProvider={userArtists} / The custom component is a Canvas control with an HBox, LinkButton, Button, etc. I hope this is enough detail. I'm desperate for an answer! I'm new to Flex, and am used to .Net where I can just set the datasource and bind it to the control. I've tried removing the controls individually, emptying the dataProvider ArrayCollection before re-binding... nothing works as I'm expecting. Thanks in advance

[flexcoders] Flex 2/AS3 Garbage Collection - Looking for additional information
We have had issues with garbage collection in the past and have read and re-read the Grant Skinner articles but was wondering if anyone else had some additional input and/or examples of GC in Flex 2/AS3? The reason for the query: we are/have been working with applications that are constrained to machines with limited RAM (=512) and apps that need to run for a while (6-8 hours). TIA John
[flexcoders] about the search engine issue
yesterday; Stig Bakken (Software Engineer - Google Norway) was at METU and he had a tech-talk on search engines. During the talk i asked the problem of RIA (swf) indexing ; whether google has studies to index swf files or not and his answer was almost negative. (he just said maybe video search team has studies). but he said that they left such things to developers, and suggested the usage of tricks like noscript tagging. after the talk i had a chance to talk personal and he said that they pay great attention on site maps. info about site maps can be found in google web developer tools page. i made a quick research and it seems so easy to add a sitemap. (also they provde a phyton script to automatically create sitemap if you have access to run phyton scripts on server) so; i thought this info may be useful for those who wants to create RIA using flex which can be understood by search engines... yigit Now that's room service! RE: [flexcoders] Re: Dynamically creating item IDs
What do you mean? That statement very vague. Can you create variables dynamically... yes. Can you use reflection and introspection into classes... yes. Can you create UI components at runtime... yes. Can flex compete with ajax... absolutely. _ Andrew Trice Cynergy Systems, Inc. http://www.cynergysystems.com Blog: http://www.cynergysystems.com/blogs/page/andrewtrice Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Office: 866-CYNERGY From: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Clint Tredway Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2007 4:19 PM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [flexcoders] Re: Dynamically creating item IDs what do you mean by 'id' On 3/1/07, thetexaspsycho2003 [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com mailto:flexcoders%40yahoogroups.com , thetexaspsycho2003 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Is there a way to dynamically create an item's ID?
