[Flexradio] Controlling PowerSDR when console window doesn't have focus

2005-11-16 Thread Sami Aintila
Something like this was discussed a couple of days ago. I remembered
that I have some very simple code that might be useful. I quickly
wrote a demonstration to show how it could work with PowerSDR:
http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/ahti/sdr-1000/mwheelhk.zip

The ZIP file contains mwheelhk.exe that will enable you to use mouse
wheel tuning even when the PowerSDR window doesn't have focus.
PowerSDR needs to be running before you start mwheelhk. Now, mwheelhk
will capture all mouse wheel events and send them to PowerSDR even if
the PowerSDR window is minimized or some other window has focus. You
can temporarily disable mwheelhk by holding down the Alt key on the
keyboard while you roll the mouse wheel.

Capturing only the mouse wheel events is probably not very useful.
However, selected keyboard events could be handled in a similar
fashion. This would enable users to work with other applications, but
still be able to control the radio without having to activate the
PowerSDR window.

It would probably be better to have this integrated into PowerSDR
rather than use a separate program. Of course, it has to be an
optional feature that users can disable.

Hey-ho a nice idea. I was thinking of something similar for my own software
and decided to have a small window - maybe system tray icon - where keyboard
/ mouse input is routed through to the main program. The code from
www.codejock.com has some nice ideas in the system tray area.

The glory of programming is that you could write something similar to
Windows Media Player's mini toolbar (optionally shown when minimised). I
haven't found out how to do this myself but were you to do this you would
have a fine solution!

True, but the fan in the SDR1k needs an 80mm X 15mm format (very thin) and I
could not find one in that format that had the temp sensors that were not
10-20 dBA louder than the fan currently installed.

A number of 12VDC computer fans (I'm looking at one right now branded
"ThermalTake") come with speed control capabilities built in -- either
from a pot or a thermistor that they supply with the fans. I use the
pot variety on my PC and "tune" the speed for minimum noise.

Bill, you are correct, pink noise is better than white. But back in the
"good ol' daze" white was all I had. It was a more black & white world (and
little digital sound processing that we could afford) back then :-)

BTW, I tried the white noise generator in the 1.5.5 preview releases as
referred to by Bob, but I can not find a way to have the mic pick up the
white noise, display it on the spectrum analyzer and using the RX EQ,
flatten the response. Anyone have a trick or hint for doing this?

EQ

OK I've actually slept simce my rock and roll days, but IF I remember
correctly, white noise has equal energy per hertz which means that it has a
rising frequency responce plot as frequency rises. Sound systems are more
properly equalized with "pink" noise which is white noise filtered to yield
equal energy per octive or a flat frequency response.

If you set up EQ with white noise you will have a "hotter" high end than you
might want. Does the internal generator create pink or white noise?

I was setting the receive EQ this morning and had an idea that I wanted
to share with the Flex-Radio virtual neighborhood.

Back many moons ago when I was much younger, I played in a rock band
(for all the reasons you would join a rock band) and one of my jobs was
to help the sound man set the final EQ specific to the speakers we were
using and the geometry of the venue we were playing. We did this with a
white noise generator and an audio spectrum analyzer.

My thought was we have most of those components already in the PowerSDR
application. If you added a white noise generator you could direct the
output to your speakers and while using your microphone to measure the
output, you manually (or with an automatic software routine) adjust the
receive EQ until you flat line the response. This would allow you to
compensate for room acoustics and non-linear speaker response.

Wadda ya think?

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR Ver 1.4.5.P5 - Strange TX pulsing

2005-11-16 Thread SERGE BERTUZZO
Hello to the list. I hope someone can shed some light on a problem that I am experiencing.  The setup here is a Pentium 4 3GHz - 512 BM - Delta 44 , VAC and VCOM. I am using MixW for my digital modes.

I am finding that while I am able to control the MixW software and decode digital transmissions, I seem to experience a pulsing action (approx 1 sec intervals) on the transmitted signal. On PSK or RTTY you can also clearly notice the pulsing action on the panadapter display of the PowerSDR console.

I thought that this problem could be related to the VAC settings. I adjusted the buffer size in the SDR VAC setup from 512 - 2048. With the lower setting the pulsing (still occurs but not as frequent) however it is much more pronounced (almost seems stronger as well) when I have the buffer set to the 2048 setting.
I thought that perhaps I had a SWR problem with the antenna so I tested the SDR with a dummy load and experienced the same problem. I have monitored my signals on another receiver and am able to hear the pulsing action.

Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Tim,

I'm not clear on what you're asking. When the signal generator is
turned on, it completely replaces the typical input or output, depending
on which mode is selected. You can use this on TX to drive the input in
order to adjust the TXEQ (same thing on RX).

Re: [Flexradio] A simple fan noise abatement modification

2005-11-16 Thread Tim Ellison

I am going to experiment with a temp controlled fan controller along
with opening the fan intake to reduce back pressure.

Paul, W1GHZ has a nice little fan controller project that I am going to
incorporate into the mod.  It is well thought out and documented. It has a
remote temp sensor that can be mounted on the heat sink and a high temp indicator
LED (150 F) that I am going to put on the front panel (I really like this
feature).  At ambient temperatures, it does slow the fan down and raises the
speed (no on/off switching) as the temperature increases.

You can check out his projects here:

If the main problem is cause by volume restrictions, the solution is

not to slow the fan and deprive the unit of cooling. The proper

solution is to increase airflow, by reducing restrictions and back

pressure on the air flow of the system. You did the right thing.

A fan running with reduce speed is more prone to stalling and causing

a catastrophic failure of the RF amplifier later on when it gets a

little gummed up.

2005-11-16 Thread Jerry
Hi All

Each time we get a new version of the SDR I change the CWPitch.Maximum
from 1200 to 2250. This allows enough room for centering both RTTY and PSK
signals to the "high tones" region.

For Beta 6 this is line 4791 of setup.cs. Line 4790 is"...
udDSPPitch.Maximum=

That should be enough info to find it and to modify it.

A question! How do you turn on the line numbers in the VCExpress.exe?
Using MS help to look in "TOOLS>OPTIONS etc" did not show the line number
box. It is in MS Visual Studio.NET 2003! Is there something wrong with my
installation of the new "EXPRESS"? Only downloaded .NET 2.0, VC# and MSDN.
Should I download any of the other packages.

Thanks in advance --73 de Jerry NO2T
