[Flexradio] Noise Blankers
I posted this before and only received one responce, so I'll throw it out again: I have a particular type of noise that just occurs on 40 meters with my dipole antenna. I don't hear it when I switch to another antenna, so I don't think one of these phase/amplitude noise canceling devices made by MFJ or Timewave would work. Would it be possible to add some code to the SDR-1000 that would take the signals received on the sub receiver and subtract them from the main receiver? Assuming that the sub receiver is tuned to just the noise, would the phase and amplitude of the noise in the main and sub receivers be identical enough to make this a noise canceling device? It was so bad in my hometown (population 100k+) that it caused a bunch of us teens to form our own club and Field Day operation. With the critical need to help youngsters into our ranks today, I find that the very same prejudice and/or disinterest prevail today as it did over 50 years ago. Here are the results of one HamCom (Texas) survey question responded to by 396 hams last June: 16. It echoes exactly what I have found in two local area ham clubs within the past five years. In fact in one club meeting where I brought up the topic of trying to interest youth in ham radio and the club, I was abruptly cut off and my ham-licensed wife even was threatened by another member. In the other club, I had several of the old influential members actively working against all my efforts to involve youth. It seems this is an old man's game, where they are contented with the status quo -- don't rock the ship -- we're enjoying ourselves -- who cares about ham radio when we die? Selfish? I'm in the old man category by age, but I certainly do not subscribe to the attitudes of my generation! Yes, we all need to make positive effort at supporting anything which would draw youth into our hobby/service: kids radio day, JOTA, scout merit badges, public demonstrations, etc. But more importantly, the attitude of a majority of hams needs some adjustment -- and I don't know how to do this or if it is even possible. 73, Don AE5K (Flex SDR-1000 owner, HPSDR list admin/webmaster/wikisysop, 4SQRP list admin, etc etc) ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com

It was so bad in my hometown (population 100k+) that it caused a bunch of us teens to form our own club and Field Day operation. Twas ever thus... But here's an interesting question.. was there at least one or two older hams helping out in your ops? I imagine there was someone out there. About a year or so ago, I got an interesting email from a ham who, as a youth, had dragged his radio over to my grandfather's house in a wagon for he and my father to work on. I think my dad actually drove him down to the FCC to take the test. My father was one of a group of 4 or 5 hams who had gone to school together, and I suspect (but do not know) that they weren't tied in with any sort of club, per se (and in fact, one of them built a 10m beam which was so effective that the other hams in the area accused him of having an amp concealed in the garage). Likewise, my officemate (WB6CIA) hung out with a bunch of friends in school who all had licenses (now WB6VRN, W6GL, etc) and I'll bet they weren't necessarily being encouraged by the local club. Clubs (of any kind) tend to be somewhat insular and self reliant, unless they work real hard not to. They have their particular way of doing things, often as the result of many, many years of shared experience. And, in fact, their way *may* be more efficient, but they just can't articulate why, especially in response to that whippersnapper asking the questions. Or, it might be based on some underlying assumptions which have been lost to the mists of history, but the tradition carries on (Sort of like why you get on a horse from the left side. But, relatively few of us still wear a sword.) So, someone forms a new club or organization, and either they are both successful, or one withers and dies, or they merge. There will be people using old tube rigs for the next hundred years or more. The tube afficionados will form clubs and grouse about that newfangled solid state stuff (with varying degrees of humor). There will be comparisons between analog and digital signal processing for the next 100 years too. The same way you were encouraged by others. Peer pressure is a powerful thing too. My daughter really only showed interest in doing the ham thing when a friend of hers happened to mention that she had a license. (Her friend's father happens to be a ham, and my daughter recognized the antenna on her father's car). But I can't imagine her wanting to hang out with a bunch of us old guys while she does it (except to humor me, for a short time, but pretty soon it would be Oh Dad.. ). Get em started and turn em loose in a pack by themselves. Let them figure out the mistakes for themselves. Maybe give them their own repeater or echolink or irlp. Let them administer it. There's a raft of 8th graders my daughter knows who are more than smart enough to do it. In a year, one or two could easily be Extra and trustee for it (although, maybe a trustee has to be an adult?) Maybe some of them will get interested in DSP and write code for SDR1000s. When I was that age, I would have done so, had the capability existed, but back in the 70s DSP meant mag tapes and punched cards, for the most part. After all, you don't need ALL youths to be interested, just a few, and in a typical highschool of 1000 or so students, if you can get a half dozen or so to do it, and just one of those gets excited about the coding, you're in great shape. You need the half dozen, so they don't feel like total geek outcasts. Jim, W6RMK ___ FlexRadio mailing list

Re: [Flexradio] AGC and Other Optomized Receiver Settings
Here is an article by Sinisa YT1NT which describes how the Orion AGC works and how to set it up. The Orion is close to the SDR in the way the RX works. The Orion uses a single conversion RX through a roofing filter before demodulation to 11 khz and then sending that signal to a DSP unit. The SDR is direct conversion through a Tayloe detector and then IQ signals at 11 khz to a DSP unit (sound card). As such they share a good deal of homogeneity in their design philosophy, so reading some of the theory Sinisa discusses should give a good conceptual overview of how to adjust the SDR for a given band and a given set of band conditions. Importing the Region 1 BandText table into your current PowerSDR database using my utility will result in data corruption. 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com
Re: [Flexradio] Attitude is killing us!
Dear Don-AE5K, You're absolutely right about the Old Fart mentality as concerns our MUCH NEEDED youth/new-blood in the hobby. It's a real dis-favor that these guys are doing not only to the TRADITION OF OUR HOBBY but also to the many kids who only need some motivation and a friendly mentor to push them into our great HBBY/SERVICE!!! I've tried to do my part but it's NOT ENOUGH!!! Regards to ALL! 3.872 MHz reads 75M SSB here, as it should. 73, Ray, K9DUR -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [Flexradio] bandtext
There was indeed a hole in the frequencies in any databases created with the SVN version from Sat. There is a new SVN rev. that corrects this that was posted this afternoon. Our apologies for creating any more confusion than necessary. Re: [Flexradio] bandtext
Jerry, Disregard my previous post about 3.872 MHz displaying correctly here. It does, but I had forgotten about the hole in the 80m frequencies that I had corrected here manually. 73, Ray, K9DUR -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 20, Issue 18
Hello Bob You are right about recruting newcomers via SDR. I did it the following way. I bought quit a few of Tony's Softrock Kits and gave them away as Xmas gift to potential SDR youngsters. The echo, like Whooo I receiveed after their first trail on a SDR reception, payed back for the cost I had in purchasing the kits. 73 Chris hb9bdm -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [Flexradio] New band freq changes
The URL doesn't work on my computer. Why does this have to be so hard? Who cares if the message box says the wrong thing? Being a brand new owner of a used Flex Radio, which is back in Texas for repair, I assume that the errors in the band info will NOT restrict me from operating on the new frequencies that my license allows.
