I will see if I can find the recommended contact cleaner
"DetoxIT/Progold" locally, or perhaps something similar
I'm of the opinion that the poor contact may be as a result of
oxidization as the SDR and audio cables are not ever moved, and the
cables therefore are not tampered with
Hopefully I'll find the "DetoxIT/Progold" out here, and if so will give
that a try, before resorting to more drastic measured

You are referring to DetoxIT/ProGold for the contact cleaner. It works
very well.

Dave,

Had the same problem when I got my SDR1k almost 4 years ago. I replaced
all male plugs on the cables between soundcard and SDR1k with goldplated
ones.
Also, the female connectors of my SDR1k were not flush with the
backplate of the cabinet and I drilled larger holes to make sure the
plugs are well sea-ted. Neither received nor transmitted DSSB
acci-dently since then.
Other
users reported earlier that they sprayed some type of liquid on the male
and /or female connectors to maintain a low contact resistance.

[Flexradio] No more one watt units

2007-01-10 Thread N9VC
Thanks for the quick reply, John. Oh well, I'll have to wait and see what
new goodies you guys come up with. Flexradio is the cutting edge of
technology as far as I am concerned. In fact, mine is playing in the
background on 160 as I type this. Can't wait to see what you roll out at
Dayton. Thanks again and you guys keep up the good work.

I have to agree with Tim. After typing in the Flex URL into my browser,
I was reading the pdf file with 4 clicks and typing "keyboard
commands". That is pretty easy.

Re: [Flexradio] Keyboard Commands for the PowerSDR

2007-01-10 Thread Tim Ellison
Ken,

No offense taken, but I don't see where you can make an assessment such
as usability is quite poor. You enter a search criteria, click on Go
and if the content you are looking for is there, it will return a hit.
If it is not, it won't. Granted you have to select logical search
criteria, but that skill is becoming ubiquitous with all of the search
engines on the Internet.

One other point, this tool is a Knowledge Base, not a collaboration
tool. It was never intended to be one. And like any tool it has to be
used in the intended manner it was designed for. It isn't very fun to
drive nails with a hoe.

Also we keep statistics on the KB. It averages over 3000 hits a day
where 90% are repeat visitors. Since there are only several thousand
SDR-1000 owners, obviously a lot of others do not share your opinion.

I would welcome any constructive recommendations you might have to
share. Feel free to contact me offline with them.

In my first post (attached below) I gave the impression the receiver dropout

Power SDR versions since I purchased the SDR-1000 in 2005. It is not a
regular event. It happens when you least expect it. I do notice a burst of
audio like feedback when I unkey often. I don't know if the feedback is
related, just an observation.

Mike

I have been experiencing a glitch recently. I'm hoping some of you have
cured it and will help.

Using version 1.6.3 or 1.8.0 when transitioning from transmit to receive the
receiver is gone. I have to put Power SDR in standby and turn it back on.
The receiver comes right back.

I am using the Delta 44 card. The SDR-1000 connects to the 3 GHz windows
machine via USB adaptor. I am running AM at 25 watts. I key with a relay
from my audio mixing console. Nothing else on that relay. Good RF practices

[Flexradio] Price Increase and 1 watt SDR discontinued

2007-01-10 Thread N9VC
Hi John,

Rather then post this on the reflector and have Gerald Capodieci call me
a crybaby again. I will ask you direct. I have a 1 watt version and thought
seriously about getting another one. I see you stated all remaining units
are sold, but you had stated earlier that they would be discontinued on Feb
1st. Will you still accept orders for the 1 watt version. I still disagree
with it being discontinued, but did not cry as was stated. I guess the
internet gives some people the courage that they would not have if they were
face to face with the people they direct their comments at. I really love
this radio and it has put the fun back in ham radio for me. Thanks for
listening, John.

[Flexradio] legacy support Re: Price Increase and 1 watt SDR discontinued

No surprise that hardware will be supported in some fashion into the
future. After all it is a physical instance.

However, "same software" might be stretching it a bit, support
wise. I suspect that someone trying to get support for SDRConsole
V0.5.8 from 2003 might run into some problems, as well as SDRConsole
v.1.4.2. Might even have trouble getting "real support" for V1.6 of
PowerSDR (the support might consist of the "why don't you just
upgrade to V1.8 now" approach)

Likewise, if PowerSDR evolves to support newer hardware
implementations, is there a commitment on the part of Flex-Radio to
ensure backwards compatibility with older hardware? Will Version 2.0
of PowerSDR support the original "3-board-stack"? What about Version 3.0? etc.

Does Flex have a set of "archival hardware" upon which to verify
backwards compatibility? (I suspect so, although perhaps not for that
purpose.. more just they have old junk cluttering up their shack,
just like I do). I'm pretty sure that Flex (nor the volunteer
software developers) have any sort of formalized regression testing
process, so backwards support might just happen to work.

I would think it reasonable that at some point, there would be a
declared end of life for both a particular software rev or a hardware
rev. I certainly wouldn't think it reasonable to ask for support
for the VB software.

[Flexradio] 1 watt radio

2007-01-10 Thread John
As of today, all remaining 1 watt radios have been sold.

The feedback and comments regarding the discontinuance of the 1 watt radio
have been enlightening and will be carefully considered as we move forward.

Please keep your suggestions coming; our goal is to be the worlds best
amateur radio manaufacturer.

[Flexradio] One more (last) question

2007-01-10 Thread FireBrick
While I found the program to download.

Is there more of a 'demo' program that will go through some of the features
of the flex radion and PowerSDR v180.0 program?

I thought there were some sound files I could run that would give me a feel
for what the filtering etc. would do.

Couldn't seem to find that in the Download section.

2007-01-10 Thread John Basilotto
Paul, the 1 watt version, ATU and Amp will be supported well into the future
because the SDR-1000 uses the same software that our future generation
products will use albeit there may be new features only available on the new
products. We plan to unveil new products during the Hamvention if everything
goes as plan. So you see things don't suck after all!

In my case it took less than one year from purchase for the model to be
discontinued. Are the accessories going to be discontinued also? Or is the
power amp/ant tuner going to be available for years, but at a higher price?
This all basically sucks. How is your new military version going?

Dave,

Had the same problem when I got my SDR1k almost 4 years ago. I replaced
all
male plugs on the cables between soundcard and SDR1k with goldplated
ones.
Also, the female connectors of my SDR1k were not flush with the
backplate of
the cabinet and I drilled larger holes to make sure the plugs are well
sea-ted. Neither received nor transmitted DSSB acci-dently since then.
Other
users reported earlier that they sprayed some type of liquid on the male
and
/or female connectors to maintain a low contact resistance.

[Flexradio] Transmit To Receive Glitch 2

2007-01-10 Thread Jim, W4ATK
I have only seen this since going to 1.9.0 of Power SDR. I knew I had
seen
previous posts on this subject. I too experienced the burst of tone on
returning to rx. Going back to version 1.8.0 cured it for me, but apparently
this is a long term problem that is going to bite us sooner or later.

Tim, the noise floor on the panadapter drops well below the normal line.

I have not looked at the bug reports to sse if this is registered
there. if
not then we should register it for resolution.

Re: [Flexradio] Poor Audio Connections producing DSSB

2007-01-10 Thread Willi Reppel
Dave,

Had the same problem when I got my SDR1k almost 4 years ago. I replaced all
male plugs on the cables between soundcard and SDR1k with goldplated ones.
Also, the female connectors of my SDR1k were not flush with the backplate of
the cabinet and I drilled larger holes to make sure the plugs are well
sea-ted. Neither received nor transmitted DSSB acci-dently since then. Other
users reported earlier that they sprayed some type of liquid on the male and
/or female connectors to maintain a low contact resistance.

You really need to think in terms of energy, not power. Same size
FFT, sampled 4 times faster means the "energy collection time" is 1/4
as long. If the input noise is truly flat and white, then the
sampling bandwidth is 4 times wider, so the total noise energy is
exactly the same.

That is, the sum of the magnitude of all the bins should be
constant. The bins are 4 times wider, so pick up 4 times the
instantaneous power, but accumulate that power over 1/4 the time.

You can also look at it in terms of the variance of the input samples
(noise power == noise variance), where the input samples have a
notional gaussian distribution.

Sorry about that. The soft way to key the SDR is to click the MOX button
twice then leave its pointer over the MOX button. Then the SPACE bar
becomes the PTT. This also works on most other buttons. I use it over
the VOX button. When using my H-5 headset and do not intend to talk for
awhile I uncheck the VOX button, then to reactivate it I just press the
SPACE bar. The trouble occurs when you need to use the mouse for
something else or just bump it off the button. I wish some KEYs on the
keyboard could be fixed regardless of the mouse position. (Now watch,
this feature is already implemented. All it will take is for some guru
to tell us how to do it!)

List Members,

In my first post (attached below) I gave the impression the receiver
dropout
when transitioning from transmit to receive only happened in Power SDR
versions 1.6.3 and 1.8.0. Not so, this has been an ongoing glitch
noticed in
Power SDR versions since I purchased the SDR-1000 in 2005. It is not a
regular event. It happens when you least expect it. I do notice a burst
of
audio like feedback when I unkey often. I don't know if the feedback is
related, just an observation.

Mike

I have been experiencing a glitch recently. I'm hoping some of you have
cured it and will help.

Using version 1.6.3 or 1.8.0 when transitioning from transmit to receive
the
receiver is gone. I have to put Power SDR in standby and turn it back
on.
The receiver comes right back.

I am using the Delta 44 card. The SDR-1000 connects to the 3 GHz windows
machine via USB adaptor. I am running AM at 25 watts. I key with a relay
from my audio mixing console. Nothing else on that relay. Good RF
practices
no RF in the shack. Thanks in advance.

Hi all

In versions after 1.8 (ie 1.9 betas)I get a strange
behaviour of the NR and Notch filters, they behave
like the old filters and not LMS although LMS is
checked in the setup.

(I verify it by going to BIN and hearing the tone
and/or noise come back up)

If I DEselect the LMS and REselect it, everything runs
ok until I close the program and restart it!!

Can you verify it?

[Eric] Yes. We can emulate several of the Kenwood models such as the
TS-2000.

> Does SDR accept virtual comports such as the microHAM keyer provides.

[Eric] The PowerSDR software has no concept of whether a COM port is virtual
or actual hardware. We recommend using N8VB's vCOM software (available on
our knowledge base) which allows easy configuration of virtual COM ports
that can talk to each other via software.

[Eric] I'm not familiar with that particular amp. But you should be able to
figure out fairly quickly whether it will work with our radio by taking a
look at the Ch. 4 in our Operating Manual (also available on our knowledge
base).

> So what issues would I run into???

[Eric] You would likely want to get one of our supported soundcards and
either our USB Adapter or a PCI LPT port to control the radio. I can't
imagine not being able to at least duplicate if not exceed the automation
that you have presently for digital modes.

Re: [Flexradio] OpenOffice "base" for PowerSDR mdb file?

2007-01-10 Thread Mike Naruta
Make a copy of your PowerSDR.mdb file in
another folder for experimentation

start OpenOffice.Org Base (mine is 2.0.3)

select Connect to an Existing Database

pulldown Microsoft Access (I had to scroll up)

Next

Browse to your testing copy of PowerSDR.mdb

Open

Next

you can choose whether to register the db or not,
and Open the database for editing

click Finish to create your "new" database.

Now you can click on the Tables icon and then
click on the PowerSDR table that you want to see.

Have fun.

Re: [Flexradio] Poor Audio Connections producing DSSB

2007-01-10 Thread Joe - AB1DO
Dave,

Some people tie wrap the audio connections to the parallel connector cable
comming from the SDR-1000 to avoid them being pulled loose. If you're a
little more adventurous, you might want to check out Mike King's website <
www.km0t.com >. He moved the modified Delta-44 break-out board inside the
SDR-1000, making the 15-pin d-sub connector the audio connector. As the
break-out board does nothing more than filter and pass on all the audio
connections (as well as add flexibility on grounding), the 15-pin connector
can also be used to hook up to other sound cards.

Ahem...it was Dan Tayloe who pointed it out, I'm just the simple lab rat

BTW, I'm a little confused about the need for a generator - I used nothing
more than a PC running PowerSDR with the appropriate sound card selected (in
my case a Delta-44) - no generator here.

Re: [Flexradio] Higher sampling rates yeilds improved sensitivity?

2007-01-10 Thread Tayloe Dan-P26412
Ok. So when the sampling rate is increased 4x, the FFT uses the same
number of points, so we just end up doing FFTs four times more often,
with each bin being 4x wider than they were before. 4x wider ought to
mean a 6 db increase in noise power. However, the fact that this is
being produced 4x more often should mean that we get some of this back
(all of it back?) due to the now larger sampling rate.

A generator is not needed to measure this. Just turn off the receiver
so that the sound card is connected to nothing by quiet, powered-down
electronics, and use PowerSDR to look at the resulting noise from the
sound card input. You ought to be able to look at the change in the
apparent noise floor in a fixed bandwidth such as 500 Hz as the sampling
rate is changed.

But in this case, we always use the exact same FFT. It is not even
rebuilt as we change sample rates. The number of bins do not go up so
the amount of bins do not they remain constant, so the noise power per
bin should go UP. We always use a 4096 point FFT for the panadapter,

correct, it is interesting. Again, I am just swamped so though the

Care to share? I haven't figured out how to key the rig from the keyboard

SDR1001 Wish List

On/Off switch that disconnects the red P/S cable from the radio
internals.
SO239 connectors: One for TX/RX and One for receive only (switchable
usage).
One only 120mm quite fan on bottom of case.
Linear amp relay RCA jack on back of case.
Sound card inside of case requiring NO outside case cables or at least,
attached to the case with SHORT connect cables.
An ACL connector if power output is increased over 100 Watts.
Permanent PTT key programmed onto the keyboard.

   SDR1001 Wish Not List
  1. Custom imbedded computer inside the case with no option to use one's
own.
  2. Custom imbedded sound card inside the case with no option to use one's
own.
  3. Rice Box style self-contained radio with few options or modularly.
  4. No generically upgradeable or owner replaceable components (soundcards,
video, speakers, keyboard, internet, internal storage, or custom OS
options).
  5. Lots of delicate little buttons, switches, knobs and puny cluttered
display with a useless panadapter.
  6.

Re: [Flexradio] success with PSK31 on my SDR-1000

2007-01-10 Thread Charles Greene
Larry and All,

I keep all my setups in memory including a default frequency, filters
and anything else memory will store, and instead of clicking on a
band and mode, I do a memory recall in which case there is no added
setup. If you start MixW first, this over-rides MixW's selection of
USB. I noted DIGL has some differences such as the default centering
frequency, so I use DIGU for everything and use "inverted" in MixW if needed.
