Re: [Flexradio] Question about powered speakers SDR1000

2007-07-14 Thread Paul Giusti
Hi All

Thanks for all the replies..suggestions have been great..I
can confirm that using the Altec Lansing VS2220 certainly in my
circumstances did the trick..I am successfully using them with not a hint of
RFI so again for the guys who suggested the VS2220. iI'm sure if i had Bose
speakers (cost an absolute fortune here in VK) the audio quality would be
considerably better but certainly the quality of recovered audio the VS2220
is certainly more then acceptable.

Thanks again everyone for steering me in the right
direction..now one step closer to the SDR1000 becoming my primary radio.

Thanks

Paul - VK3FPG

[Flexradio] KMØT Record Breaking Rainscatter QSO s with the SDR-1000!!!

2007-07-14 Thread Tim Ellison
We have just learned that Mike, KM0T has just set two new microwave distance
records for 5.7 and 10 GHz using his SDR-1000! This is a great accomplishment
for Mike and the SDR-1000! This isn't the first time Mike has used the
SDR-1000 to provide him a significant advantage in VHF+ contesting. In
addition to slaying microwave distance records, he also dominates the ARRL UHF
contest by taking 1st place for the past three years using a SDR-1000
(coincidence? I think not!)

For more details on Mike's award winning accomplishments see the Flex-Radio web
page http://www.flex-radio.com/

It is also worthwhile to visit Mike's SDR-1000 web page where he details many
of his extensive modifications to his VHF+ software defined operating position.
 http://www.km0t.com/pages/sdr.htm

Congratulations Mike!

[Flexradio] Problems with system software.

2007-07-14 Thread Charles Greene
Hi,

When I run PowerSDR with the SDR-1000, it first sounds like a chu chu
train for about two min, then calms down. CPU 25 to 40%, XP. When I
change bands, I get an unhandled exception message which usually
takes a reboot to fix, then it will change bands for awhile then
repeat the problem.

Suggestions (other than reformat and reload)?

[Flexradio] Home-brew computer for FLEX-5000

2007-07-14 Thread Alan NV8A
Except for notebook computers and one ancient desktop that I bought
used, I haven't bought an off-the-shelf computer for 20 years, and I'm
not about to change my habits to enjoy my FLEX-5000 when it arrives.

My current shack computer is a 1GHz PIII on an Asus motherboard (the
only brand I've bought for the last 15 years). It already has a
P4-compatible power supply of adequate capacity, a PCI-bus Firewire card
(Adaptec, IIRC -- for capturing video from a digital camcorder), and a
PCI-bus multi-serial card. I have a spare ATI X300 PCI-Express video
card that I could use.

If I replace the mobo and CPU by an Asus M2N-E or M2N-SLI Deluxe (the
latter has Firewire on board but only one IDE connection) and an AMD AM2
dual-core CPU rated at 5000 or more, and install 2GB of RAM, does
anybody know of any problems I might face with PowerSDR and the rig? OK,
I know already that I'll have to reinstall WinXP from scratch and
convince some person in India that I'm not trying to cheat Micro$oft,
but other than that...?

Re: [Flexradio] Problems with system software.

2007-07-14 Thread Tim Ellison
A reformat and a reload is a bit radical.

Try building a new database first. If that doesn't resolve your
problems, the a little less radical approach can be taken.

Uninstall all instances PowerSDR using the Add or Remove Program feature
in the Control Panel. Delete the PowerSDR directories. Install 1.8.0
and do the initial soundcard configuration. Then load Beta 1.9.1 and
let it build a *new* database (do not import). The TX and RX threading
has been greatly changed in the new 1.9.1 version so a complete
reconfiguration of your hardware buffers (sound card buffer size or
latency depending on the card) and the PowerSDR audio buffers is in
order.

Also make sure you have the latest version of your video driver, all of
the .NET updates and the latest DirectX installed before starting the
PowerSDR reload.

If you have a lot of custom TX profiles, memories or a modified band
plan, copy your current database to a safe location before starting and
after you get things working, then use Ray's PowerSDR Data Import
Utility to integrate just those tables into the new database.

[Flexradio] Contesting practices?

2007-07-14 Thread Neal Campbell K3NC
Hi all

Thankfully, after 6 years of very bad back health, I am becoming
able to sit for hours at a time and am starting to enjoy SP action
in cw and rtty contests. I played a few hours last weekend in the DL
RTTY contest (a real treat btw) and did some this weekend in the IARU.

Last weekend I started using the SDR1K and just didn't feel very
comfortable so switched over to my Orion2. After a while I figured I
might as well figure out how to use the SDR1K in contests so switched
back over.

I decided to use the amplifier this weekend and had the usual
experiments to get RF out of the chain. The most success I had was to
use the radioshack isolators and more than a few ferrites.

The question to the list is: What hints and tips do you have on
contesting with the SDR? I have been playing some with the Shuttlepro
but ultimately think the mouse is just as good (if not better since
you already have it in your hand). I never got the hotwheel program
to send the mouse wheel commands to PowerSDR, does anyone have any
tips on how to make it work. Its not less disruptive to make the
powersdr window active versus the old manual action of turning the
tuning knob of the radio, but if hotwheels could work, it would be
very very nice.

For SP action, do you point and shoot or do you mouse wheel your
way thru the bands. Do you use narrow (e.g., 250hz) filters or keep
them wide?

How does the SDR act when you are running? Anything to watch out for?

I am getting more comfortable every hour but it is definitely
different than with using an old-style rig!

Re: [Flexradio] [SPAM] Contesting practices?

2007-07-14 Thread FireBrick
Neal, I'm taking a break fro IARU and I'll give you my 'style'
I contest two handed.
One on the mouse, and left hand with a Griffin placed just left of the
keyboard.
and I use both
Griffin and mouse.

Normally, if SP, I just just mouse/right hand to scroll down the band map
in Writelog, either clicking on a cluster spot or actually scrolling via the
mouse.
Major excursion across the band are done with the Griffin.
Push Down on Griffin and you can speed up your scroll.

Left hand hits the Buffer Fkeys on the keyboard.
In both rtty or cw contesting, I keep the bandpass NARROW.

And if the programmers are reading this.
250hz wide is too large for crowded cw and 100 is too narrow.
So I use a VAR1 of about 150hZ, as that gives me the the station I want, and
also lets me know if he tends to listen off freq.
In rtty, I use the 250hz filter.

Note for programmers, I find it difficult to adjust the width with the mouse
slider.
I end up bumping the Low/High numbers witht he up/down arrows.
Also find that the Tune steps need a 5Hz step and should have buttons in
addition to the -/+
Maybe a 'user set 3 buttons.

Writelog works well with PWSDR, the only gotcha ...is the 'focus' issue.
But I've gotten pretty good at realizing where the mouse is and what has
focus.
(griffin needs focus on PWSDR to function)
Wish there was a way to lock the Griffin on PWSDR.

This cw contest, I played with using the equalizer to tighten the cw
pitch/background noise to my moderate employment loss of hearing.

Give that a try, it really helps the fatique level.
It's not just your fathers pig farmer equalizer
It really helps with cw also.

As the Marin County Sundancers said...I'm not interested in sounding good.
I'm interested in sounding LOUD.

(I may have dated myself with that last paragraph.)

Did you figure out *why* the AMD machine didn't work? My main machine --

[Flexradio] Frequency for CW and SSB

2007-07-14 Thread Bernhard Hailer, DL4MHK/AE6YN
Hello,

question regarding PowerSDR: when you switch from USB to CWU, PowerSDR adds
the side tone frequency to the currently used frequency; e.g. you operate USB
at 21.4000 MHz and your side tone is 600 Hz, your new frequency is 21.4006
once you switch to CW.

This may be logical, but it is a nuisance if you operate mixed mode: I'm
practicing CW with some local hams here, and I have always to correct the
frequency when we have a final SSB chat after our practicing.

Is there a purpose behind this scheme? Is it configurable anywhere? I haven't
seen this with other radios...

Thanks!

Re: [Flexradio] Frequency for CW and SSB

My Yaesu radios do this, sort of...the idea being that you can switch back
and forth between modes on the same nominal frequency and be tuned properly
for each mode. It's a semi-convenience. I only ever use LSB-side insertion
on CW so the Yaesus are always wrong. (It seems downright counterintuitive
for the audio frequency of a CW signal to go *down* as you tune *up*, which
is what you get with USB-side insertion.)

What there really needs to be is a configurable table of offsets from the
nominal frequency for each mode.
