Re: [Flexradio] Mac Mini

2007-12-31 Thread Jim Rogers, W4ATK
Hi Neal,

When I am using MixW, the shift key swaps the macro buttons, so all the
buttons go blank. Sometimes they stay that way. Otherwise releasing the
shift key puts everything back again. Just a little bothersome when you are
typing to see the macros flipping on and off.

Re: [Flexradio] shuttle pro 2 Help

2007-12-31 Thread Dale Boresz
Mike,

I think the best way to achieve what you're trying to do is to 'export'
your settings to a file. Then, others can 'import' them.

Try this:

-- Open the Contour Shuttle Device Configuration menu by clicking the
icon in the tray, and then selecting 'Open Control Panel'

-- Make sure that your PowerSDR application setting is the one currently
selected in the 'Application setting' dropdown list.

-- Click the 'Options' button beneath this dropdown list, and select
'Export Settings'

-- In the pop-up dialog box, name the file whatever you want (without an
extension) and select the directory into which you'd like it saved, and
click 'Save'

When you check the file, it'll probably be around 10K to 15K in length,
and will have the extension: ".pref". You can provide this file to
others who can then 'import' the file.

[Flexradio] Mac Book Pro/Bootcamp/Flex-5000A

2007-12-31 Thread Jim Rogers, W4ATK
The setup procedure is now on my website in the Amateur Radio Blog,
http://web.mac.com/jimrogers_w4atk
. I have also included some observations below that are from that blog.

My purpose in installing the Flex-5000A on the MacBook Pro was
two fold. 1) Get back on the air. 2) Determine whether to fix the old
XP box or go totally Mac here at W4ATK.
 1) On my XP machine, I had dual monitors. Once you have them, you
are certainly reluctant to give them up. Mac allows the attachment of
a second monitor, but I wasn’t all that impressed with the result. I
need to do more research in this area to be sure I am giving the mac
its due.
 2) My Mac Book Pro is a 2.2GHz 15” dual core machine. Performance
it would seem should be equivalent to that of my XP machine. Not so.
If I set the audio sample rate to 96000 and buffer to 512 I get
serious audio dropouts, pops, in the audio along with frequent hangs
of the PowerSDR software (requiring a Stop/Start operation of
PowerSDR). Processor utilization is not that much different, so at
present I do not fully understand.
I must run the system at 48000 sample rate, 512 buffer, and VAC
at 12000 to get any degree of stability. Again, I need to do
additional testing and research. Hopefully there will be some input
from other mac users that will show me the error of my ways.

I am a bit disappointed at this moment. I expected better.
Repairing the old XP box is looking more and more inviting. Not the
result I was expecting.

Have you done the XP tuning described in websites like
www.tweakhound.com? You might get some of that sampling speed back if
you do. I never set up a windows machine without doing those steps.

As you know computer speed is a lot more than the processor's internal
clock rate. What was the memory speed on your XP vs the Mac? How much
L1 and/or L2 cache? All those sorts of things.

And, then, there's always the OS overheads to service interrupts,
etc., which could be very different in different hardware
configurations (Check out the old postings on the Beowulf list to hear
the complaints about the older RealTek Ethernet chips which were
popular as the first on-motherboard-net interfaces.)

Someone at work had done a bunch of testing on relative performances
of new macs vs older PCs with Windows.. I'll see if I can track it down.

[Flexradio] Flex 5000 = "SO2R in a box"?

2007-12-31 Thread William Hein
I am looking to communicate/network/liase with other contestors
interesed in using the Flex 5000 as a 'SO2R in a box" rig for
contesting (SO2R = Single Operator 2 Radio). My email is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I took delivery of my Flex 5000 a month ago and have been evaluating
it since as a serious contest rig. Thus far, I am very impressed with
the performance. Simply the best weak signal low band RX I've ever
used, in particular being able to fine-tune the AGC-Threshold control
to peak weak 160m signals against the noise is magical (Orion could do
this but required a lot of fiddling with controls nested under soft
menus and was a hassle). The filters are incredible even down to 25-
Hz and the panadapter is stunning. The sound of received CW is just
beautiful in contrast to the harsh sounding CW audio on many modern
rigs (a big pet peeve of mine(. I've been A/Bing the Flex against an
Orion II and a 7800. The 7800 is sold as of today as I couldn't see
any reason to keep it with the 5000 in the shack (I will keep the
Orion, as a backup or guest op rig -- some people will just not like
using a mouse instead of turning panel full of 'real' knobs).

Only real problem I've encountered so far is the ShuttlePro knob stops
controlling the Flex VFO if another program, such as a contesting
logging program, has computer focus. Is there a work-around to keep
the ShuttlePro lcoked to PowerSDR regardless of what other software is
running?

Here are some of my Flex SO2R thoughts:

** The 5000 will have the essential hardware components to achieve
SO2R capability when the second RX ships in 2008. The 5000 is already
full-duplex capable so genuine SO2R capability may come down to a
method to switch the TX between the two RXs and their assigned
antennas <--> keying lines <--> PAs (I am assuming good isolation
within the Flex box when RXing on one band and TXing on another
simultaneously). According to a FlexRadio person I spoke to last
summer at CSVHF a small mod may be needed to the 5000's antenna
switching matrix to allow the RX1 and RX2 channels to stay assigned to
the same antennas and PA keying lines while the TX toggles between the
two frequencies (which will typically be on different bands).

** Given the amount of gear that a typical SO2R ham station employs
(see http://www.k8nd.com/Radio/SO2R/K8ND_SO2R.htm for a gallery of
SO2R ham station photos) putting two rigs, SO2R control box
(implemented in software and married to a contest logging program)
plus most of the other SO2R accessories into a single rig and single
computer will be a radical and dramatic step forward

** How cool would dual panadapters (one for RX1 and one for RX2) with
packet spots and logged station calls overlaid at the appropriate
frequency be?

** Integrating Win-Test (contesting software with integrated SO2R
capability) with PowerSDR could blur the line between logging software
and the rig

** A special contest 'skin' for PowerSDR which would hide all non-
essential controls (such as WARC band buttons) and make the remaining
buttons and controls much bigger (easier to see @ 3 am on the second
night of CQ WW) and arranged on the screen in locations to optimize
typical contest operating patterns

[Flexradio] just to start the year off right about SO2R

2007-12-31 Thread FireBrick
I now contest with a Flex5Ka.
It has the capability of full multiband duplex. (second receiver option on
the way).

So I will be able to hear two bands simultaneously, even when transmitting.
And consequently, I would be able to cq, alternately on both bands (note: I
said alternately).
And which ever band I receive a reply, stop all cqing to make the qso.

All of this in one neat little box, containing all the antenna switching
etc.

So to get the year off with a bang..

what contest class would this be?

PS: I will give this a try but fear I'm way too old, slow, forgetful,
arthritic, and dependent on massive doses of FloMax and Aricept to be able
to keep up such a pace.

The hardware is probably ready to go, but unless I missed something,
the software is not duplex. I am guessing it probably won't be until
the recently discussed PowerSDR 2.x is pretty far along.

Software duplex capability is probably also required to provide real CW QSK.

[Flexradio] RadCom arrived

2007-12-31 Thread Neal Campbell K3NC
I just got my copy of the latest RadCom magazine with Peter Hart's
review of the 5000a. The review is overall excellent, the only flaw is
the phase noise limited dynamic bandwidth "further out" from 500Hz
bandwidth. He also says that the wideband noise plateau on 160 was
clearly visible on the spectrum analyzer at -108dbC/Hz which he called
"a worrying result". He ends the review saying that the 5000a is a
significant advance on the SDR1000 and in many ways the receiver ranks
with the very best although image rejection is the limiting issue.

A great review from him, I really like his reviews they are less
biased than our national organization's magazine.

I believe the software has been full duplex for a while now. Last
time the whole CW thing came up, Bob and Eric thrashed it out
(probably before last year's Dayton). There was a lot of band aiding
and fiddling with buffer sizes for many months before, but they bit
the bullet and did it, as I recall.

Re: [Flexradio] Mac Book Pro/Bootcamp/Flex-5000A

2007-12-31 Thread Jim Rogers, W4ATK
Guys, I suspect you are right. I wanted to compare the two before doing
anything else. I really never did any optimization on the old confuser, it
just ran like a deer. I probably should consider some additional latency
with mac, since bootcamp has to "scaffold" around XP. I did turn off
automatic updates just to see if that would help and it seems to have done
some good. I wanted to turn off McAfee but have not figured out how to
disable that yet and I would hate to have to re-install it. You used to be
able to just click on it, but now . With the tower down, this is the
only computer in the shack, the tower was dedicated to the Flex-5000 and an
email account. Thanks to both of you for all the information. It will not
go unused I assure you.

2007-12-31 Thread K3PZ
Sherman,

Congrats on the 5000C. I heard you on 20M this morning working Europe. Your
external audio chains needs a little tweaking though (as you heard from a few
dx contacts) but overall you sounded good for your first day. John, W5GI,
should be able to get you sounding better as he is also using the 5000C and
external audio gear. I remember you and the old Kachinas when we used to be
neighbors back when you lived down here in South Florida years ago. But you are
right, the SDR 5K is a Kachina on "rocket fuel" :)

[Flexradio] Memories won't save

2007-12-31 Thread vtnn43e
Recently I entered a bunch of frequenices into memory and they saved ok. Today
I went to add more
and they looked like they saved. However when I exited PowerSDR SVN 1853 and
restarted it they
were gone. This happened two times. Does anyone have any idea as to what is
wrong there?

Thanks

FYI, the software is already full duplex but we need to do some tweaking
from an operational perspective. We use full duplex operation for the built
in test.

The hardware is probably ready to go, but unless I missed something,
the software is not duplex. I am guessing it probably won't be until
the recently discussed PowerSDR 2.x is pretty far along.

Software duplex capability is probably also required to provide real CW QSK.

Just a note that image rejection is about to get a lot better. Bob McGwier

Subject: [Flexradio] RadCom arrived

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000 = "SO2R in a box"?

2007-12-31 Thread Lee A Crocker
Its my understanding the "new architecture" will allow for a lot if not all of
what you ask for including the ability to skin the radio. When the radio was
designed it was designed with SO2R as one of its features and since when the
new RX comes online the radio will not be full duplex but full triplex (all
three processes will be on all the time), your wish should be fully realizable.
As far as isolation I can run my SDR-1000 on 75M at 1500 W SSB in a rag chew
and run my F5K on 40M or 160M and work DX on CW all night long without knowing
the SDR-1k is transmitting. I have measured 2V of 80M rf on my 40M antenna and
the radio doesn't blink. The antennas are full size verticals (1/4 wave on 80
and 1/2 wave on 40) 100Ft apart. It is my understanding that the shuttle
driver can be made focus independent and program dependent also. Eventually I
wound up selling my Orion so that's in your future as well. You will never
turn it on. You won't be able to
stand using the knob without having the panadapter available.

That happens on the PC, also. And, with the CTL key in addition.

If you don't like it, you can always make the shifted and unshifted
buttons agree, I suppose.

Anyway, it's not Mac- specific behavior. You press CTL or Shift and you
get another "set" of keys.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR with Logger32 and VCOM

2007-12-31 Thread Greg - ZL3IX
I have a set up a VCOM CAT link between Logger32 and PowerSDR. The link works,
except that, if Logger32 is booted up before PowerSDR,
either manually or under automatic startup, it sends a CAT request to
the radio for frequency before it can reply. Seeing no reply, Logger
assumes that no radio is connected, or will be connected, and doesn't
try again. (In contrast N1MM warns the user, and tries again. N1MM
doesn't have some of the other features of Logger though)

I could decide to start Logger manually after PowerSDR is up and
running, but that really should not be necessary.

Has anyone found a way around this in the Logger32 setup? I'm sure there must
be something I've missed.

73, Greg, ZL3IX
